Romans 7:2-10 in English

² For the woman that hath a husband is bound by law to the husband while he liveth; but if the husband die, she is discharged from the law of the husband.

³ So then if, while the husband liveth, she be joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if the husband die, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she be joined to another man.

⁴ Wherefore, my brethren, ye also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ; that ye should be joined to another, even to him who was raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit unto God.

⁵ For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were through the law, wrought in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

⁶ But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that wherein we were held; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter.

⁷ What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Howbeit, I had not known sin, except through the law: for I had not known coveting, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet:

⁸ but sin, finding occasion, wrought in me through the commandment all manner of coveting: for apart from the law sin is dead.

⁹ And I was alive apart from the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died;

¹⁰ and the commandment, which was unto life, this I found to be unto death:

⁵ For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

⁶ But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

⁷ What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

⁸ But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.

⁹ For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

¹⁰ And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.

² For example, a woman is required by the law {the law requires a woman} to obey and be faithful to her husband as long as he is alive. But if her husband dies, she is freed from having to { no longer has to} obey the law about remaining married to her husband.

³ Therefore, a woman will be called {people will call a woman} an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she no longer has to obey that law. Then she will not be an adulteress if she marries another man.

⁴ Likewise, my fellow believers, just like people are free from having to obey any law after they die MET, you and I have been freed { God has freed you and me} from having to obey all the Jewish rituals and laws MET. That is because it is as though we died with Christ when he was crucified. Now you and I belong to someone else MET, like a woman who marries again after her husband dies belongs to another man. Specifically, you and I belong to Christ, who has come back to life {whom God has caused to live again after he died}, in order that we may live righteously IDM to honor God.

⁵ When our self-directed nature controlled us, desires that led us to sin were acting in our bodies. Those desires were increased because of our knowing God's laws PRS. As a result we did evil things IDM that caused us to be separated from God.

⁶ But now we are freed {free} from having to obey all the Jewish rituals— it is as though we have died. The result is that now we are not controlled by those rituals {those rituals do not control us now}. So we serve God, not by having to obey those rituals, which is the old way, but in the new way, as God's Spirit helps us to serve him.

⁷ Someone might object, saying, “◄The laws that God gave Moses must be evil if our sinful desires are increased because of our knowing those laws. MTY/Are not the laws that God gave Moses evil if they stir up our sinful desires?►” MTY, RHQ I would reply that they certainly are not evil, even though our sinful desires are increased. What I would reply is that I, for example, realized that what I was doing was sinful only because of what is written { Moses wrote} in those laws. For example, I realized that coveting is sinful only because he wrote in those laws PRS, “You must not covet.”

⁸ And because of what that commandment stated, my sinful desire to have things that belong to others PRS caused me to covet in many ways. Our desire to sin is not stimulated MET when there is no law that prohibits our doing sinful things.

⁹ Formerly, when I did not know what God's laws required, I used to live without worrying about what I was doing. But when I became aware that God commanded, “You must not covet,” I suddenly realized PRS that I was sinning,

¹⁰ and I realized that I was separated from God. The laws that I thought would enable me to live eternally as a result of my obeying them caused me to realize that I was separated from God!

² For the woman who has a husband is placed by the law under the power of her husband as long as he is living; but if her husband is dead, she is free from the law of the husband.

³ So if, while the husband is living, she is joined to another man, she will get the name of one who is untrue to her husband: but if the husband is dead, she is free from the law, so that she is not untrue, even if she takes another man.

⁴ In the same way, my brothers, you were made dead to the law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, even to him who came again from the dead, so that we might give fruit to God.

⁵ For when we were in the flesh, the evil passions which came into being through the law were working in our bodies to give the fruit of death.

⁶ But now we are free from the law, having been made dead to that which had power over us; so that we are servants in the new way of the spirit, not in the old way of the letter.

⁷ What then is to be said? is the law sin? in no way. But I would not have had knowledge of sin but for the law: for I would not have been conscious of desire if the law had not said, You may not have a desire for what is another's.

⁸ But sin, taking its chance through that which was ordered by the law, was working in me every form of desire: because without the law sin is dead.

⁹ And there was a time when I was living without the law: but when the law gave its orders, sin came to life and put me to death;

¹⁰ And I made the discovery that the law whose purpose was to give life had become a cause of death:

² For the married woman is bound by law to her husband so long as he is alive; but if the husband should die, she is clear from the law of the husband:

³ so then, the husband being alive, she shall be called an adulteress if she be to another man; but if the husband should die, she is free from the law, so as not to be an adulteress, though she be to another man.

⁴ So that, my brethren, ye also have been made dead to the law by the body of the Christ, to be to another, who has been raised up from among the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God.

⁵ For when we were in the flesh the passions of sins, which were by the law, wrought in our members to bring forth fruit to death;

⁶ but now we are clear from the law, having died in that in which we were held, so that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in oldness of letter.

⁷ What shall we say then? is the law sin? Far be the thought. But I had not known sin, unless by law: for I had not had conscience also of lust unless the law had said, Thou shalt not lust;

⁸ but sin, getting a point of attack by the commandment, wrought in me every lust; for without law sin was dead.

⁹ But I was alive without law once; but the commandment having come, sin revived, but I died.

¹⁰ And the commandment, which was for life, was found, as to me, itself to be unto death:

² For the woman that hath an husband, whilst her husband liveth is bound to the law. But if her husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.

³ Therefore, whilst her husband liveth, she shall be called an adulteress, if she be with another man: but if her husband be dead, she is delivered from the law of her husband; so that she is not an adulteress, if she be with another man.

⁴ Therefore, my brethren, you also are become dead to the law, by the body of Christ; that you may belong to another, who is risen again from the dead, that we may bring forth fruit to God.

⁵ For when we were in the flesh, the passions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members, to bring forth fruit unto death.

⁶ But now we are loosed from the law of death, wherein we were detained; so that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

⁷ What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? God forbid. But I do not know sin, but by the law; for I had not known concupiscence, if the law did not say: Thou shalt not covet.

⁸ But sin taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.

⁹ And I lived some time without the law. But when the commandment came, sin revived,

¹⁰ And I died. And the commandment that was ordained to life, the same was found to be unto death to me.

² For the woman who is under a man has been bound by law to the living husband. But if the husband should die, she is released from the law of the husband.

³ So then, while the husband is living, she will be called an adulteress if she becomes married to a different husband; but if her husband should die, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress, having become married to a different husband.

⁴ Therefore, my brothers, you also were put to death to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, so that we might bear fruit to God.

⁵ For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions aroused through the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death.

⁶ But now we were released from the law, having died in that to which we were held fast, so that we should serve as slaves in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

⁷ What shall we say then? Is the law sin? By no means! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known lust unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.”

⁸ But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me every kind of lust. For apart from the law sin was dead.

⁹ For I was alive apart from the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived, but I died.

¹⁰ And the commandment, which was to bring life, I found to bring death.

² For example, a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if the man should die, she is released from the law about the husband.

³ So then, if she should ‘marry’ another man while her husband is living, she will be labeled an adulteress; but if the husband should die, she is free from that law, not being an adulteress if she marries another man.

⁴ Therefore, my brothers, you also were put to death to the law through the body of the Christ so as to belong to another—to Him who was raised from the dead—so that we should produce fruit to God.

⁵ Because when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our body parts to produce fruit to death.

⁶ But now we have been released from the law, having died to what was gripping us, so as to slave in newness of spirit and not in oldness of letter.

⁷ So what shall we say then? Is the law sin? Of course not! Indeed, I would not have come to know the sin except through the law: I would not have recognized covetousness if the law had not said, “You must not covet.”

⁸ But the sin, grasping an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of coveting. Now without the law sin is dead.

⁹ Once upon a time, without law, I was actually ‘alive’; but when the commandment came, the sin came to life and I died.

¹⁰ Yes, the commandment that was to bring me life turned out to bring death.

² For example, a married woman is bound by the law to her husband while he's alive, but if he dies, she's released from this legal obligation to him.

³ So if she lives with another man while her husband is alive, she would be committing adultery. However, if her husband dies and then she marries another man, she wouldn't be guilty of adultery.

⁴ In the same way, my friends, you've become dead to the law through the body of Christ, and so now you belong to someone else—Christ, who was raised from the dead so that we could live a productive life for God.

⁵ While we were controlled by old nature, our sinful desires (as revealed by the law) were at work within us and resulted in death.

⁶ But now we've been set free from the law, and have died to what kept us in chains, so that we can serve in the newness of the spirit and not the old letter of the law.

⁷ So what do we conclude? That the law is sin? Of course not! I wouldn't have known what sin was unless the law defined it. I wouldn't have realized that wanting to have other people's things for myself was wrong without the law that says, “Don't desire for yourself what belongs to someone else.”

⁸ But through this commandment sin found a way to stir up in me all kinds of selfish desires—for without law, sin is dead.

⁹ I used to live without realizing what the law really meant, but when I understood the implications of that commandment, then sin came back to life, and I died.

¹⁰ I discovered that the very commandment that was meant to bring life brought death instead,

² For the woman which is in subiection to a man, is bound by the Lawe to the man, while he liueth: but if the man bee dead, shee is deliuered from the lawe of the man.

³ So then, if while the man liueth, she taketh another man, she shalbe called an adulteresse: but if the man be dead, she is free from the Law, so that shee is not an adulteresse, though shee take another man.

⁴ So yee, my brethren, are dead also to the Law by ye body of Christ, that ye should be vnto an other, euen vnto him that is raised vp from the dead, that we should bring foorth fruite vnto God.

⁵ For when we were in ye flesh, the affections of sinnes, which were by the Law, had force in our members, to bring foorth fruit vnto death.

⁶ But now we are deliuered from the Lawe, he being dead in whom we were holden, that we should serue in newnesse of Spirite, and not in the oldnesse of the letter.

⁷ What shall we say then? Is the Lawe sinne? God forbid. Nay, I knewe not sinne, but by the Lawe: for I had not knowen lust, except the Lawe had sayd, Thou shalt not lust.

⁸ But sinne tooke an occasion by ye commandement, and wrought in me all maner of concupiscence: for without the Lawe sinne is dead.

⁹ For I once was aliue, without the Law: but when the commandement came, sinne reuiued,

¹⁰ But I died: and the same commandement which was ordeined vnto life, was found to be vnto me vnto death.

⁹ And I, apart from the Law, was once alive; but when the commandment came, sin came to life again, and I died;

¹⁰ and the very commandment whose design was life, I found to issue in death.

² For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband while he is living; but, if her husband dies, she is set free from the law that bound her to him.

³ If, then, during her husband's lifetime, she unites herself to another man, she will be called an adulteress; but, if her husband dies, the law has no further hold on her, nor, if she unites herself to another man, is she an adulteress.

⁴ And so with you, my friends; as far as the Law was concerned, you underwent death in the crucified body of the Christ, so that you might be united to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that our lives might bear fruit for God.

⁵ When we were living merely earthly lives, our sinful passions, aroused by the Law, were active in every part of our bodies, with the result that our lives bore fruit for death.

⁶ But now we are set free from the Law, because we are dead to that which once kept us under restraint; and so we serve under new, spiritual conditions, and not under old, written regulations.

⁷ What are we to say, then? That Law and sin are the same thing? Heaven forbid! On the contrary, I should not have learnt what sin is, had not it been for Law. If the Law did not say ‘You must not covet,’ I should not know what it is to covet.

⁸ But sin took advantage of the Commandment to arouse in me every form of covetousness, for where there is no consciousness of Law sin shows no sign of life.

⁹ There was a time when I myself, unconscious of Law, was alive; but when the Commandment was brought home to me, sin sprang into life, while I died!

¹⁰ The Commandment that should have meant life I found to result in death!

² For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband while he is living; but, if her husband dies, she is set free from the law that bound her to him.

³ If, then, during her husband's lifetime, she unites herself to another man, she will be called an adulteress; but, if her husband dies, the law has no further hold on her, nor, if she unites herself to another man, is she an adulteress.

⁴ And so with you, my friends; as far as the Law was concerned, you underwent death in the crucified body of the Christ, so that you might be united to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that our lives might bear fruit for God.

⁹ There was a time when I myself, unconscious of Law, was alive; but when the Commandment was brought home to me, sin sprang into life, while I died!

¹⁰ The Commandment that should have meant life I found to result in death!

² I’ll talk about one part of the law to show you what I mean. That law says that a woman is only allowed to marry one man. If a married woman sleeps with a man that is not her husband, she breaks that law and she is guilty. We call it adultery. But if her husband dies, there is no law for her about adultery any more, so she can marry another man and sleep with him.

⁴ You know that Jesus died for us. His body was dead on the cross. And you believe in Jesus, so it is like you died too. That old law is not for you any more. You belong to Jesus now. He came alive again, and you are alive again too. You have a new life now, so you can do a lot of good things for God.

⁵ At first we didn’t believe in Jesus, and our boss was that bad part of us that makes us go wrong. That law told us not to do bad things, but this made us think about those bad things, and we did them anyway. So we had to die.

⁶ But now it is like we are dead with Jesus and we don’t have to do anything that old law says any more. And we are alive again too, with the Holy Spirit in us. We live to do whatever God tells us to do.

⁷ Some people might reckon the old law is no good because it made us go wrong, but that’s not true. It is like this. The law shows me the things that are wrong. For example, one part of that law says, “Don’t think about getting something for yourself if it belongs to somebody else.” Before I ever knew that law I didn’t ever think like that.

⁸ But after I heard that law, then I started to think that bad way. You see, if I don’t ever hear that law I will not go wrong like that.

⁹ Before I ever heard the law I was alive, but then that law woke that bad part of me up and now it makes me go wrong,

¹⁰ so I have to die. That law’s job was to show me how I can live, but all it did was this, it told me, “You will die.”

² For the woman which is in subieccion to a man is bounde by the lawe to the man as longe as he liveth. Yf the man be deed she is lowsed from the lawe of the man.

³ So then yf whill the man liveth she couple her selfe with another man she shalbe counted a wedlocke breaker. But yf the man be deed she is fre from the lawe: so that she is no wedlocke breaker though she couple her selfe with another man.

⁴ Even so ye my brethren are deed concerninge the lawe by the body of Christ that ye shuld be coupled to another (I meane to him that is rysen agayne from deeth) that we shuld bringe forth frute vnto God.

⁵ For when we were in the flesshe the lustes of synne which were stered vppe by the lawe raygned in oure membres to bringe forth frute vnto deeth.

⁶ But now are we delivered from the lawe and deed from that whervnto we werein bondage that we shuld serve in a newe conversacion of the sprete and not in the olde conversacion of the letter.

⁷ What shall we saye then? is the lawe synne? God forbid: but I knewe not what synne meant but by the lawe. For I had not knowne what lust had meant excepte the lawe had sayde thou shalt not lust.

⁸ But synne toke an occasion by the meanes of the commaundement and wrought in me all manner of concupiscece. For with out the lawe synne was deed.

⁹ I once lived with out lawe. But when the commaundement came synne revyved and I was deed.

¹⁰ And the very same comaundement which was ordeyned vnto lyfe was founde to be vnto me an occasion of deeth.

² For the married woman is bound by law to the husband while he lives, but if the husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage.

³ So then, while her husband is living, if she lives with another man, she will be called an adulteress. But if the husband dies, she is free from the law, so she is not an adulteress if she lives with another man.

⁴ Therefore, my brothers, you were also made dead to the law through the body of Christ. This is so that you could be joined to another, that is, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might produce fruit for God.

⁵ For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death.

⁶ But now we have been released from the law. We have died to that by which we were held. This is so that we might serve in newness of the Spirit, and not in oldness of the letter.

⁷ What will we say then? Is the law itself sin? May it never be. However, I would never have known sin, if it were not through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law said, “You must not covet.”

⁸ But sin took the opportunity through the commandment and brought about every lust in me. For without the law, sin is dead.

⁹ At one time I was alive without the law, but when the commandment came, sin regained life, and I died.

¹⁰ The commandment that was to bring life turned out to be death for me.

² For the woman that has a husband is bound by law to the husband while he lives, but if the husband dies, she is discharged from the law of the husband.

³ So then if, while the husband lives, she is joined to another man, she would be called an adulteress. But if the husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she is joined to another man.

⁴ Therefore, my brothers, you also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you would be joined to another, to him who was raised from the dead, that we might produce fruit to God.

⁴ Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit to God.

⁶ But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead by which we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

⁷ What shall we say then? Is the law sin? By no means. No, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

⁸ But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.

⁹ For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

¹⁰ And the commandment which was ordained to life, I found to be to death.

⁹ And I lived without the law sometime; but when the commandment was come or had come, sin lived again. But I was dead,

¹⁰ and this commandment that was to life, was found to me, to be to death.

³ Therefore she shall be called (an) adulteress, if she be with another man, while the husband liveth; but if her husband is dead, she is delivered from the law of the husband, (or but if her husband dieth, she is released from the marriage law), (so) that she be not (an) adulteress, if she be with another man.

⁴ And so, my brethren, ye be made dead to the law by the body of Christ, (so) that ye be of another, that rose again from death (or who rose again from the dead), (so) that ye bear fruit to God. Truly, brethren, and ye be made dead to the law through the body of Christ, that ye be another’s, that rose again from (the) dead, (so) that we bear fruit to God.

⁷ What therefore shall we say? The law is sin? God forbid. But I knew not sin, no but by the law, (or But I did not know sin, except for the Law); for I knew not that coveting was sin, no but for the law said, Thou shalt not covet.

² for the married woman to the living husband hath been bound by law, and if the husband may die, she hath been free from the law of the husband;

³ so, then, the husband being alive, an adulteress she shall be called if she may become another man's; and if the husband may die, she is free from the law, so as not to be an adulteress, having become another man's.

⁴ So that, my brethren, ye also were made dead to the law through the body of the Christ, for your becoming another's, who out of the dead was raised up, that we might bear fruit to God;

⁵ for when we were in the flesh, the passions of the sins, that are through the law, were working in our members, to bear fruit to the death;

⁶ and now we have ceased from the law, that being dead in which we were held, so that we may serve in newness of spirit, and not in oldness of letter.

⁷ What, then, shall we say? the law is sin? let it not be! but the sin I did not know except through law, for also the covetousness I had not known if the law had not said:

⁸ 'Thou shalt not covet;' and the sin having received an opportunity, through the command, did work in me all covetousness — for apart from law sin is dead.

⁹ And I was alive apart from law once, and the command having come, the sin revived, and I died;

¹⁰ and the command that is for life, this was found by me for death;
