¹⁶ But if what I would not, that I do, I consent unto the law that it is good.

¹⁷ So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me.

¹⁸ For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me, but to do that which is good is not.

¹⁹ For the good which I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I practise.

²⁰ But if what I would not, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me.

²¹ I find then the law, that, to me who would do good, evil is present.

²² For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

¹⁶ If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.

¹⁶ Since I do the evil things that I do not want to do, I agree that the laws of God are good.

¹⁷ So, it is not that I do evil things because I wish to do them. Instead, what happens is that I do sinful things because the desire to sin causes me to do them. The desire to sin ◄is within/permeates► me PRS.

¹⁸ I know that my self-directed nature will not let me PRS do anything that is good. I know this because I want to do what is good, but I do not do what is good.

¹⁹ I do not do the good things that I want to do. Instead, it is evil things that I do not want to do that I do.

²⁰ Because I do evil things that I do not want to do, it is not that I do evil things because I want to. Instead, I do them because my self-directed nature, which permeates me PRS, causes me to do them.

²¹ I find, then, that what always happens is that when I want to do what is good, there is an evil desire present within me that PRS prevents me from doing good.

²² With my new inner nature I like the laws of God very much.

¹⁶ But if what I don’t desire, that I do, I consent to the law that it is good.

¹⁷ So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me.

¹⁸ For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing. For desire is present with me, but I don’t find it doing that which is good.

¹⁹ For the good which I desire, I don’t do; but the evil which I don’t desire, that I practice.

²⁰ But if what I don’t desire, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me.

¹⁸ For I am conscious that in me, that is, in my flesh, there is nothing good: I have the mind but not the power to do what is right.

¹⁹ For the good which I have a mind to do, I do not: but the evil which I have no mind to do, that I do.

²⁰ But if I do what I have no mind to do, it is no longer I who do it, but the sin living in me.

²¹ So I see a law that, though I have a mind to do good, evil is present in me.

²² In my heart I take pleasure in the law of God,

¹⁶ But if what I do not will, this I practise, I consent to the law that it is right.

¹⁷ Now then it is no longer I that do it, but the sin that dwells in me.

¹⁸ For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, good does not dwell: for to will is there with me, but to do right I find not.

¹⁹ For I do not practise the good that I will; but the evil I do not will, that I do.

²⁰ But if what I do not will, this I practise, it is no longer I that do it, but the sin that dwells in me.

²¹ I find then the law upon me who will to practise what is right, that with me evil is there.

²² For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man:

¹⁶ If then I do that which I will not, I consent to the law, that it is good.

¹⁷ Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

¹⁸ For I know that there dwelleth not in me, that is to say, in my flesh, that which is good. For to will, is present with me; but to accomplish that which is good, I find not.

²¹ Therefore I find this law, that when I wish to do the right thing, evil is right there with me.

²² For I delight in the law of God in my inner being.

¹⁷ So now it is no longer I who am doing it, but the sin dwelling in me.

¹⁸ Further, I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; because to will is present with me, but I do not find how to perform the good.

¹⁹ Because I do not do the good that I want to do; rather I practice the evil that I do not want to do.

²⁰ Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but the sin dwelling in me.

²¹ So I find this ‘law’: when I want to do good, evil is right there with me.

²² I joyfully agree with God's law according to the inner man,

¹⁶ But if I'm saying that I do what I don't want to, this shows that I admit the law is good and right.

¹⁷ So it's no longer me who does this, but sin living in me—

¹⁸ for I know that there's nothing good in me as far as my sinful human nature is concerned. Even though I want to do good, I'm just not able to do it.

¹⁹ The good I want to do, I don't do; while the evil I don't want to do, that's what I end up doing!

²⁰ However, if I'm doing what I don't want to, then it's no longer me doing it, but sin living in me.

²¹ This is the principle I've discovered: if I want to do what's good, evil is always there too.

²² My inner self is delighted with God's law,

¹⁶ If I doe then that which I woulde not, I consent to the Lawe, that it is good.

¹⁷ Nowe then, it is no more I, that doe it, but sinne that dwelleth in me.

¹⁸ For I know, that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing: for to wil is preset with me: but I find no meanes to perform that which is good.

¹⁹ For I doe not the good thing, which I would, but the euil, which I would not, that do I.

²⁰ Nowe if I do that I would not, it is no more I that doe it, but the sinne that dwelleth in me.

²¹ I finde then that when I would doe good, I am thus yoked, that euill is present with me.

²² For I delite in the Law of God, concerning the inner man:

¹⁷ This being so, the action is no longer my own, but is done by the sin which is within me.

¹⁸ I know that there is nothing good in me — I mean in my earthly nature. For, although it is easy for me to want to do right, to act rightly is not easy.

¹⁹ I fail to do the good thing that I want to do, but the bad thing that I want not to do — that I habitually do.

²⁰ But, when I do the thing that I want not to do, the action is no longer my own, but is done by the sin which is within me.

²¹ This, then, is the law that I find — when I want to do right, wrong presents itself!

²² At heart I delight in the Law of God;

¹⁶ But when I do what I want not to do, I am admitting that the Law is right.

¹⁶ I know that I want to be better, and this shows that, really, I reckon the law is good.

¹⁷ So, really, it’s not me that does those bad things. It’s that bad part of me that is inside me.

¹⁸ I know that I can’t do anything good by myself. I want to do the right thing but I can’t.

¹⁹ I keep trying to do good things, but I can’t. No, I keep doing the bad things I don’t want to do.

²⁰ That proves it. It’s not me that does those bad things. It’s that bad part inside me that does those bad things.

²¹ This is what happens. It is like another law. Every time I try to do something good, that bad part of me wants to take control and make me go wrong.

²² Really, I myself want to live the right way,

¹⁶ Yf I do now that which I wolde not I graute to the lawe that it is good.

¹⁷ So then nowe it is not I that do it but synne that dwelleth in me.

¹⁸ For I knowe that in me (that is to saye in my flesshe) dwelleth no good thinge. To will is present with me: but I fynde no meanes to performe that which is good.

¹⁹ For I doo not that good thinge which I wold: but that evill do I which I wolde not.

²⁰ Finally yf I do that I wolde not then is it not I that doo it but synne that dwelleth in me doeth it.

²¹ I fynde then by the lawe that when I wolde do good evyll is present with me.

²² I delite in the lawe of God concerninge the inner man.

¹⁶ But if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law that the law is good.

¹⁷ But now it is no longer I who do it, but the sin that lives in me.

¹⁸ For I know that in me, that is in my flesh, lives no good thing. For the desire for good is with me, but I cannot do it.

¹⁶ And if I do that thing that I will not, (then) I consent to the law, that it is good. (And if I do that which I do not desire to do, then I agree with the Law, that it is good, or that it is right.)

¹⁷ But now I work not it now, but the sin that dwelleth in me. Now soothly I work not it now/Now soothly I work not that thing now, but that sin that dwelleth in me.

¹⁸ But I know, that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwelleth no good; for will lieth to me, (or for the will, or the desire, to do good, lieth before me), but I find not (how) to perform (any) good thing.

¹⁹ For I do not that good thing that I will, but I do that evil thing that I will not. (For I do not do that good thing that I desire to do, but I do that evil thing that I do not desire to do.)

²⁰ And if I do that evil thing that I will not (or And if I do that evil thing that I do not desire to do), (then) I work not it, but the sin that dwelleth in me.

²¹ Therefore I find the law to me willing to do good thing or Therefore I find a law to me willing (or desiring) to do (the) good thing, for evil thing lieth to me. (And so I find this law in me; I desire to do the good thing, but only the evil thing lieth before me.)

²² For I delight (al)together to the law of God, after the inner man. (For I greatly delight in the Law of God, in my inner man.)
