Help us?

Romans 6:15-23 in American Standard Version (1901)

15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under law, but under grace? God forbid.
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye present yourselves as servants unto obedience, his servants ye are whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
17 But thanks be to God, that, whereas ye were servants of sin, ye became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching whereunto ye were delivered;
18 and being made free from sin, ye became servants of righteousness.
19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye presented your members as servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity, even so now present your members as servants to righteousness unto sanctification.
20 For when ye were servants of sin, ye were free in regard of righteousness.
21 What fruit then had ye at that time in the things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
22 But now being made free from sin and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto sanctification, and the end eternal life.
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:15-23 in King James (Authorized) Version

15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

Romans 6:15-23 in Translation for Translators

15 I suppose that certain people might think about what I have just said and they might say RHQ, “ You say that the laws God gave Moses did not enable us to stop sinning, but that God is now treating us kindly in ways we do not deserve. ◄ That seems to mean that God permits us to continue sinning./ Does that mean that God permits us to continue sinning?► RHQ” My reply to that is no, we should certainly not continue sinning
16 Slaves have to obey what their masters command MET them to do. ◄I want you to remember this./Do you not know this?► RHQ Similarly, if you present yourselves to someone in order to obey him, you will be the slaves MET of the person you obey. Similarly, if you have yielded yourselves to do the sinful things you desire, you are slaves of your sinful desires PRS, and you will be eternally separated from God. If you have yielded yourselves to obey God, you are slaves of God and you need to live righteously.
17 You were once slaves to your sinful desires. But you began to sincerely obey the new teaching MET that you were taught {that people taught you}. I thank God for that.
18 I also thank God that you have been freed { that he has freed you} from being controlled by a desire to sin, and that you have become as though you were slaves MET to living righteously MET.
19 I am illustrating what I say by talking about slavery because your human nature prevents you from understanding spiritual truth easily. In the past you willingly did the immoral and unlawful things that your minds compelled your bodies to do MET, just like slaves do what their masters compel them to do. As a result, you did even more unlawful things. Now, you need to willingly allow your minds to compel your bodies to act righteously MET, in order that you will behave in a holy/pure way.
20 When you were like slaves because your sinful desires compelled you to do sinful things MET, you were not concerned about behaving righteously MET.
21 Nevertheless, doing those things resulted in your being separated from God, so you did not benefit at all from doing the sinful things that you are now ashamed of. RHQ
22 But you have been freed { God has freed you} from letting the desire to sin control you. You have become as though you are MET the slaves of God. So now the result is that God has caused you to completely belong to him and, as a result, you will live eternally.
23 What people receive for sinning is that they are eternally separated from God. That is like wages that people receive MET. But what God gives us is a gift. What he gives us is that we live eternally because of our relationship with (OR, because we are united to) Christ Jesus our Lord.

15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be!
16 Don’t you know that when you present yourselves as servants and obey someone, you are the servants of whomever you obey, whether of sin to death, or of obedience to righteousness?

Romans 6:15-23 in Bible in Basic English

15 What then? are we to go on in sin because we are not under law but under grace? Let it not be so.
16 Are you not conscious that you are the servants of him to whom you give yourselves to do his desire? if to sin, the end being death, or if to do the desire of God, the end being righteousness.
17 But praise be to God that though you were the servants of sin, you have now given yourselves freely to that form of teaching under which you were placed;
18 And being made free from sin you have been made the servants of righteousness.
19 I am using words in the way of men, because your flesh is feeble: as you gave your bodies as servants to what is unclean, and to evil to do evil, so now give them as servants to righteousness to do what is holy.
20 When you were servants of sin you were free from righteousness.
21 What fruit had you at that time in the things which are now a shame to you? for the end of such things is death.
22 But now, being free from sin, and having been made servants to God, you have your fruit in that which is holy, and the end is eternal life.
23 For the reward of sin is death; but what God freely gives is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:15-23 in Darby Translation

15 What then? should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Far be the thought.
16 Know ye not that to whom ye yield yourselves bondmen for obedience, ye are bondmen to him whom ye obey, whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
17 But thanks be to God, that ye were bondmen of sin, but have obeyed from the heart the form of teaching into which ye were instructed.
18 Now, having got your freedom from sin, ye have become bondmen to righteousness.
19 I speak humanly on account of the weakness of your flesh. For even as ye have yielded your members in bondage to uncleanness and to lawlessness unto lawlessness, so now yield your members in bondage to righteousness unto holiness.
20 For when ye were bondmen of sin ye were free from righteousness.
21 What fruit therefore had ye then in the things of which ye are now ashamed? for the end of them is death.
22 But now, having got your freedom from sin, and having become bondmen to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end eternal life.
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the act of favour of God, eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:15-23 in Douay-Rheims 1899

15 What then? Shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
16 Know you not, that to whom you yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants you are whom you obey, whether it be of sin unto death, or of obedience unto justice.
17 But thanks be to God, that you were the servants of sin, but have obeyed from the heart, unto that form of doctrine, into which you have been delivered.
18 Being then freed from sin, we have been made servants of justice.
19 I speak an human thing, because of the infirmity of your flesh. For as you have yielded your members to serve uncleanness and iniquity, unto iniquity; so now yield your members to serve justice, unto sanctification.
20 For when you were the servants of sin, you were free men to justice.
21 What fruit therefore had you then in those things, of which you are now ashamed? For the end of them is death.
22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, you have your fruit unto sanctification, and the end life everlasting.
23 For the wages of sin is death. But the grace of God, life everlasting, in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:15-23 in English Majority Text Version

15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!
16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves as obedient slaves, you are slaves to whom you obey, whether of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?
17 But thanks be to God, that though you used to be slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from your heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.
18 And having been freed from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness.
19 I speak in human terms on account of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves to uncleanness, and to lawlessness resulting in more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness resulting in sanctification.
20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.
21 So what fruit did you have then of which things you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.
22 But now having been freed from sin, and having become enslaved to God, you have your fruit resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:15-23 in The New Testament with Commentary

15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Of course not!
16 Do you not know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey them as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey—whether of sin into death, or of obedience into righteousness?
17 But thanks be to God that although you used to be the slaves of the sin you wholeheartedly obeyed that pattern of doctrine into which you were delivered.
18 So having been emancipated from the sin, you became enslaved to the righteousness.
19 I continue to speak on a human level because of the weakness of your flesh. Now just as you used to present your body parts as slaves to uncleanness, and to ever increasing lawlessness, so now present your body parts as slaves to righteousness with a view to sanctification.
20 For when you were slaves to the sin, you were ‘free’ from the righteousness.
21 So what ‘fruit’ did you have at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? The end of those things is death!
22 But now, having been emancipated from the sin, and having become enslaved to God, you have your ‘fruit’ into sanctification—and the end is eternal life!
23 Because the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:15-23 in Free Bible Version

15 So then, should we sin because we're not under law, but under grace? Of course not!
16 Don't you realize that if you make yourselves someone's slaves, obeying their orders, then you are slaves to the one you obey? If you are slaves of sin, the result is death; if you obey God, the result is you are made right with him.
17 Thank God that though you once were slaves to sin, you whole-heartedly chose to follow the truth about God that you learned.
18 Now that you've been freed from sin, you've become slaves of doing what is morally right.
19 I'm using this everyday example because your human thinking is limited. Just as you once enslaved yourselves to immorality, piling up sin upon sin, now you must enslave yourselves to what is pure and right.
20 When you were slaves to sin you were not required to do what's right.
21 But what were the results back then? Aren't you ashamed of the things you did? Such things that lead to death!
22 But now that you're set free from sin, and have become God's slaves, the results will be a pure life—and in the end, eternal life.
23 The wage sin pays is death, but God's free gift is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

20 For when ye were the seruants of sinne, ye were freed from righteousnesse.
21 What fruit had ye then in those things, whereof ye are nowe ashamed? For the ende of those things is death.

15 What then? Are we to sin, because we are not under the Law, but under grace? God forbid!
16 Know ye not, that whomever ye choose to obey as a master, his bondmen ye are, whether of sin whose fruit is death, or of obedience whose fruit is righteousness?

15 What follows, then? Are we to sin because we are living under the reign of love and not of Law? Heaven forbid!
16 Surely you know that, when you offer yourselves as servants, to obey anyone, you are the servants of the person whom you obey, whether the service be a service sin which leads to death, or a service Duty which leads to righteousness.
17 God be thanked that, though you were once servants of sin, yet you learnt to give hearty obedience to that form of doctrine under which you were placed.
18 Set free from the control of sin, you became servants to righteousness.
19 I can but speak as people do because of the weakness of your earthly nature. Once you offered every part of your bodies to the service of impurity, and of wickedness, which leads to further wickedness. Now, in the same way, offer them to the service of righteousness, which leads to holiness.
20 While you were still servants of sin, you were free as regards righteousness.
21 But what were the fruits that you reaped from those things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of such things is death.

Romans 6:15-23 in Plain English Version

15 But maybe you think like this, “We can do whatever bad things we want to do, because that law is not our boss any more and God will be good to us anyway.” No way. Don’t think like that.
16 You know that if you always do whatever another person wants, you make him your boss. So if you do bad things all the time, you make those bad things your boss, and in the end you will die. But if you do whatever God wants all the time you make him your boss, and in the end he will say that you are really good.
17 Actually you used to do bad things all the time but now you have made God your boss and you really want to do whatever he wants. I thank God for this.
18 You are free now. You don’t have to do those bad things any more but you have got a new good boss now and you have to do good things all the time.
19 (I’m trying to say this in a way that you will really understand.) In the past you used your body for wrong things, like you worked for a boss that made you do bad things. But now you have to use your bodies for good things. You work for God and he gets you to do good things so that you will be his special people.
20 In those days you worked for the wrong boss. You worked for that old part of you that made you want to do bad things. So you did bad things and you never wanted to do good things.
21 And what did you get after you did bad things? You got shame, that’s all. And you know that people that do those things have to die.
22 So now you can’t think any more about doing bad things, but you can work for God instead. From there you will do good things, and then you will be God’s special people and you will live with him for ever.
23 That’s the way it is. If we work doing bad things we will get our pay for that work. We will die. That’s all the pay we will get. But if we join up to our leader, Jesus Christ, God will give us properly good life that goes on for ever.

22 But now, being made free from sin and having become servants of God, you have your fruit of sanctification and the result of eternal life.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6 in World English Bible British Edition

Romans 6:15-23 in Noah Webster Bible

15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? By no means.
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants in obedience, his servants ye are whom ye obey; whether of sin to death, or of obedience to righteousness?
17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin; but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
19 I speak after the manner of men, because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity, to (work ) iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness, to (work ) holiness.
20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
21 What fruit had ye then in those things of which ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
22 But now being made free from sin, and having become servants to God, ye have your fruit to holiness, and the end everlasting life.
23 For the wages of sin is death: but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:15-23 in World Messianic Bible

15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be!
16 Don’t you know that when you present yourselves as servants and obey someone, you are the servants of whomever you obey, whether of sin to death, or of obedience to righteousness?
17 But thanks be to God that, whereas you were bondservants of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were delivered.
18 Being made free from sin, you became bondservants of righteousness.
19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh; for as you presented your members as servants to uncleanness and to wickedness upon wickedness, even so now present your members as servants to righteousness for sanctification.
20 For when you were servants of sin, you were free from righteousness.
21 What fruit then did you have at that time in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.
22 But now, being made free from sin and having become servants of God, you have your fruit of sanctification and the result of eternal life.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Messiah Yeshua our Lord.

Romans 6:15-23 in Wycliffe's Bible with Modern Spelling

15 What therefore? Shall we do sin, for we be not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye give you servants to obey to, ye be servants of that thing, to which ye have obeyed, either of sin to death, either of obedience to rightwiseness?
17 But I thank God, that ye were servants of sin; but ye have obeyed of heart into that form of teaching, in which ye be betaken.
18 And ye delivered from sin, be made servants of rightwiseness.
19 I say that thing that is of man, for the unsteadfastness, or the infirmity, or unstableness, of your flesh. But as ye have given your members to serve to uncleanness, and to wickedness into wickedness, so now give ye your members to serve to rightwiseness into holiness.
20 For when ye were servants of sin, ye were free of rightwiseness.
21 Therefore what fruit had ye then in those things, in which ye shame now? For the end of them is death.
22 But now ye delivered from sin, and made servants to God, have your fruit into holiness, and the end everlasting life.
23 For the wages of sin is death; the grace of God is everlasting life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:15-23 in Wycliffe's Bible with Modern Spelling (Enhanced)

15 What therefore? Shall we do sin, for we be not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye give yourselves (as) servants to obey to, ye be (the) servants of that thing, to which ye have obeyed, either of sin to death, either of obedience to rightwiseness?
17 But I thank God, that (once) ye were servants of sin; but ye have obeyed of heart into that form of teaching, in which ye be betaken. (But I thank God, that before ye were servants of sin; but now ye have obeyed with your heart that form of teaching, which was delivered unto you, or unto which ye be delivered.)
18 And ye delivered from sin, be made (the) servants of rightwiseness.
19 I say that thing that is of man, for the unsteadfastness, or the infirmity, or unstableness, of your flesh, (or for the frailty, or the weakness, of your flesh). But as ye have given your members to serve to uncleanness, and to wickedness into wickedness, so now give ye your members to serve to rightwiseness into holiness.
20 For when ye were servants of sin, ye were free of rightwiseness. (For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from the control of righteousness.)
21 Therefore what fruit had ye then in those things, in which ye shame now? For the end of them is death. (And so what fruit had ye then in those things, of which ye now be ashamed? For their end is death.)
22 But now ye delivered from sin, and made servants to God, have your fruit into holiness, and the end everlasting life (or and the end is eternal life).
23 For the wages of sin is death; the grace of God is everlasting life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (For the wages of sin (be) death; but the gift of God (is) eternal life in the Messiah Jesus.)

Romans 6:15-23 in Young's Literal Translation

15 What then? shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? let it not be!
16 have ye not known that to whom ye present yourselves servants for obedience, servants ye are to him to whom ye obey, whether of sin to death, or of obedience to righteousness?
17 and thanks to God, that ye were servants of the sin, and — were obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which ye were delivered up;
18 and having been freed from the sin, ye became servants to the righteousness.
19 In the manner of men I speak, because of the weakness of your flesh, for even as ye did present your members servants to the uncleanness and to the lawlessness — to the lawlessness, so now present your members servants to the righteousness — to sanctification,
20 for when ye were servants of the sin, ye were free from the righteousness,
21 what fruit, therefore, were ye having then, in the things of which ye are now ashamed? for the end of those is death.
22 And now, having been freed from the sin, and having become servants to God, ye have your fruit — to sanctification, and the end life age-during;
23 for the wages of the sin is death, and the gift of God is life age-during in Christ Jesus our Lord.
