Romans 6:10-21 in English

¹⁰ For the death that he died, he died unto sin once: but the life that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

¹¹ Even so reckon ye also yourselves to be dead unto sin, but alive unto God in Christ Jesus.

¹² Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey the lusts thereof:

¹³ neither present your members unto sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves unto God, as alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

¹⁴ For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under law, but under grace.

¹⁵ What then? shall we sin, because we are not under law, but under grace? God forbid.

¹⁶ Know ye not, that to whom ye present yourselves as servants unto obedience, his servants ye are whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

¹⁷ But thanks be to God, that, whereas ye were servants of sin, ye became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching whereunto ye were delivered;

¹⁸ and being made free from sin, ye became servants of righteousness.

¹⁹ I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye presented your members as servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity, even so now present your members as servants to righteousness unto sanctification.

²⁰ For when ye were servants of sin, ye were free in regard of righteousness.

²¹ What fruit then had ye at that time in the things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

¹⁰ For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

¹¹ Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

¹² Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

¹³ Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

²¹ What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

¹⁰ When he died, he died once for people who had sinned, and he will never die again; but in regard to his living again now, he lives in order to serve/honor God.

¹¹ Similarly, you must consider that it is as though you have become unable to do what your sinful desires MET want, as a corpse is not able to do what anyone wants it to do. You must also consider that because of your relationship to Christ Jesus you are living in a new way in order to serve/honor God.

¹² So, do not let the desire to sin PRS control your bodies MET with the result that you do the sinful things that you desire to do. Remember that your bodies will surely die, but your spirits will never die.

¹³ Do not let any of your body parts do wicked things, as you did MET when you were spiritually dead. Instead, present yourselves to God as people who are alive spiritually. Present all your body parts to God, to allow him to use them to do righteous things.

¹⁴ Do not let a desire to sin control you PRS. The laws that God gave Moses did not enable you to stop sinning. But now God controls you and kindly helps you not to sin.

¹⁵ I suppose that certain people might think about what I have just said and they might say RHQ, “ You say that the laws God gave Moses did not enable us to stop sinning, but that God is now treating us kindly in ways we do not deserve. ◄ That seems to mean that God permits us to continue sinning./ Does that mean that God permits us to continue sinning?► RHQ” My reply to that is no, we should certainly not continue sinning

¹⁶ Slaves have to obey what their masters command MET them to do. ◄I want you to remember this./Do you not know this?► RHQ Similarly, if you present yourselves to someone in order to obey him, you will be the slaves MET of the person you obey. Similarly, if you have yielded yourselves to do the sinful things you desire, you are slaves of your sinful desires PRS, and you will be eternally separated from God. If you have yielded yourselves to obey God, you are slaves of God and you need to live righteously.

¹⁷ You were once slaves to your sinful desires. But you began to sincerely obey the new teaching MET that you were taught {that people taught you}. I thank God for that.

¹⁸ I also thank God that you have been freed { that he has freed you} from being controlled by a desire to sin, and that you have become as though you were slaves MET to living righteously MET.

¹⁹ I am illustrating what I say by talking about slavery because your human nature prevents you from understanding spiritual truth easily. In the past you willingly did the immoral and unlawful things that your minds compelled your bodies to do MET, just like slaves do what their masters compel them to do. As a result, you did even more unlawful things. Now, you need to willingly allow your minds to compel your bodies to act righteously MET, in order that you will behave in a holy/pure way.

²⁰ When you were like slaves because your sinful desires compelled you to do sinful things MET, you were not concerned about behaving righteously MET.

²¹ Nevertheless, doing those things resulted in your being separated from God, so you did not benefit at all from doing the sinful things that you are now ashamed of. RHQ

¹⁴ For sin may not have rule over you: because you are not under law, but under grace.

¹⁵ What then? are we to go on in sin because we are not under law but under grace? Let it not be so.

¹⁶ Are you not conscious that you are the servants of him to whom you give yourselves to do his desire? if to sin, the end being death, or if to do the desire of God, the end being righteousness.

¹⁷ But praise be to God that though you were the servants of sin, you have now given yourselves freely to that form of teaching under which you were placed;

¹⁸ And being made free from sin you have been made the servants of righteousness.

¹⁹ I am using words in the way of men, because your flesh is feeble: as you gave your bodies as servants to what is unclean, and to evil to do evil, so now give them as servants to righteousness to do what is holy.

²⁰ When you were servants of sin you were free from righteousness.

²¹ What fruit had you at that time in the things which are now a shame to you? for the end of such things is death.

¹⁰ For in that he has died, he has died to sin once for all; but in that he lives, he lives to God.

¹⁶ Know ye not that to whom ye yield yourselves bondmen for obedience, ye are bondmen to him whom ye obey, whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

¹⁷ But thanks be to God, that ye were bondmen of sin, but have obeyed from the heart the form of teaching into which ye were instructed.

¹⁸ Now, having got your freedom from sin, ye have become bondmen to righteousness.

¹⁹ I speak humanly on account of the weakness of your flesh. For even as ye have yielded your members in bondage to uncleanness and to lawlessness unto lawlessness, so now yield your members in bondage to righteousness unto holiness.

²⁰ For when ye were bondmen of sin ye were free from righteousness.

²¹ What fruit therefore had ye then in the things of which ye are now ashamed? for the end of them is death.

¹⁰ For in that he died to sin, he died once; but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God:

¹¹ So do you also reckon, that you are dead to sin, but alive unto God, in Christ Jesus our Lord.

²¹ What fruit therefore had you then in those things, of which you are now ashamed? For the end of them is death.

¹⁰ For what death He died, He died to sin once for all; but what life He lives, He lives to God.

¹¹ Likewise you also, consider yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

¹⁹ I speak in human terms on account of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves to uncleanness, and to lawlessness resulting in more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness resulting in sanctification.

²⁰ For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.

²¹ So what fruit did you have then of which things you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.

¹⁰ —the death He died He died to sin once for all, while the life He lives He lives to God.

¹² Therefore do not let the sin reign in your mortal body, so that you obey it with the body's evil desires

¹³ —do not present any part of your body to sin as an implement for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead, and your body parts to God as implements for righteousness.

¹⁴ Really, sin must not rule over you, because you are not under law but under grace.

¹⁵ What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Of course not!

¹⁶ Do you not know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey them as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey—whether of sin into death, or of obedience into righteousness?

¹⁷ But thanks be to God that although you used to be the slaves of the sin you wholeheartedly obeyed that pattern of doctrine into which you were delivered.

¹⁸ So having been emancipated from the sin, you became enslaved to the righteousness.

¹⁹ I continue to speak on a human level because of the weakness of your flesh. Now just as you used to present your body parts as slaves to uncleanness, and to ever increasing lawlessness, so now present your body parts as slaves to righteousness with a view to sanctification.

²⁰ For when you were slaves to the sin, you were ‘free’ from the righteousness.

²¹ So what ‘fruit’ did you have at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? The end of those things is death!

¹⁰ In dying, he died to sin once and for all, but now he lives, and he lives for God!

¹¹ In just the same way you should consider yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God through Christ Jesus.

¹² Don't let sin have control over your mortal body, don't give in to its temptations,

¹³ and don't use any parts of your body as evil tools of sin. Instead dedicate yourselves to God as those who have been brought back from death to life, and use all parts of your body as tools to do something good for God.

¹⁴ Sin won't rule over you, because you're not under law but under grace.

¹⁵ So then, should we sin because we're not under law, but under grace? Of course not!

¹⁶ Don't you realize that if you make yourselves someone's slaves, obeying their orders, then you are slaves to the one you obey? If you are slaves of sin, the result is death; if you obey God, the result is you are made right with him.

¹⁷ Thank God that though you once were slaves to sin, you whole-heartedly chose to follow the truth about God that you learned.

¹⁸ Now that you've been freed from sin, you've become slaves of doing what is morally right.

¹⁹ I'm using this everyday example because your human thinking is limited. Just as you once enslaved yourselves to immorality, piling up sin upon sin, now you must enslave yourselves to what is pure and right.

²⁰ When you were slaves to sin you were not required to do what's right.

²¹ But what were the results back then? Aren't you ashamed of the things you did? Such things that lead to death!

¹⁰ For in that hee died, hee died once to sinne but in that he liueth, he liueth to God.

¹¹ Likewise thinke ye also, that ye are dead to sin, but are aliue to God in Iesus Christ our Lord.

¹² Let not sinne reigne therefore in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in ye lusts therof:

¹³ Neither giue ye your members, as weapons of vnrighteousnes vnto sinne: but giue your selues vnto God, as they that are aliue from the dead, and giue your members as weapons of righteousnesse vnto God.

¹⁴ For sinne shall not haue dominion ouer you: for ye are not vnder ye Lawe, but vnder grace.

¹⁵ What then? shall we sinne, because we are not vnder the Law, but vnder grace? God forbid.

¹⁶ Knowe ye not, that to whomsoeuer yee giue your selues as seruats to obey, his seruants ye are to whom ye obey, whether it be of sinne vnto death, or of obedience vnto righteousnesse?

¹⁷ But God be thanked, that ye haue beene the seruants of sinne, but yee haue obeyed from the heart vnto the forme of the doctrine, wherunto ye were deliuered.

¹⁸ Being then made free from sinne, yee are made the seruants of righteousnesse.

¹⁹ I speake after the maner of man, because of the infirmitie of your flesh: for as yee haue giuen your members seruants to vncleannes and to iniquitie, to commit iniquitie, so now giue your mebers seruants vnto righteousnesse in holinesse.

¹⁷ But thanks be to God that, though ye were the bondmen of sin, ye became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching which was delivered to you;

¹⁸ and being made free from sin, ye became the bondmen of righteousness.

¹⁹ I speak in a way common among men on account of the weakness of your flesh. For as ye once yielded your members as slaves to impurity and to iniquity, in order to commit iniquity, so now yield your members as bondmen to righteousness in order to become holy.

²⁰ For when ye were the slaves of sin, ye were not the bondmen of righteousness.

²¹ What fruit then had ye at that time from those things of which ye are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.

¹⁰ For the death that he died was a death to sin, once and for all. But the life that he now lives, he lives for God.

¹¹ So let it be with you — regard yourselves as dead to sin, but as living for God, through union with Christ Jesus.

¹⁵ What follows, then? Are we to sin because we are living under the reign of love and not of Law? Heaven forbid!

¹⁶ Surely you know that, when you offer yourselves as servants, to obey anyone, you are the servants of the person whom you obey, whether the service be a service sin which leads to death, or a service Duty which leads to righteousness.

¹⁷ God be thanked that, though you were once servants of sin, yet you learnt to give hearty obedience to that form of doctrine under which you were placed.

¹⁸ Set free from the control of sin, you became servants to righteousness.

¹⁹ I can but speak as people do because of the weakness of your earthly nature. Once you offered every part of your bodies to the service of impurity, and of wickedness, which leads to further wickedness. Now, in the same way, offer them to the service of righteousness, which leads to holiness.

²⁰ While you were still servants of sin, you were free as regards righteousness.

²¹ But what were the fruits that you reaped from those things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of such things is death.

¹⁹ I can but speak as people do because of the weakness of your earthly nature. Once you offered every part of your bodies to the service of impurity, and of wickedness, which leads to further wickedness. Now, in the same way, offer them to the service of righteousness, which leads to holiness.

²⁰ While you were still servants of sin, you were free as regards righteousness.

²¹ But what were the fruits that you reaped from those things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of such things is death.

¹⁰ He did die once, for people that did bad things, but now he stays alive all the time with God.

¹¹ Well, we have to think about ourselves in that same way. We joined up with Jesus Christ, so now, if we start to think we want to do something bad we have to tell ourselves that we died, just like Jesus died, so we can’t do anything bad. We have to think about living God’s way and then we will be really alive, just like Jesus Christ is alive.

¹² So don’t just think about the law that comes from Moses. It talks about the bad things people do. If you just think about this you will want to do those same bad things yourself. In that way that law will be your boss and your bodies too will make you want to do bad. Don’t be like that. Don’t let any part of your body be your boss. Don’t do whatever it wants. Instead you have to give your bodies to God and let him use you to do good things. You have to think about him all the time and remember that he is very good to you, and that he made you alive again in a new way. If you think like this you will not want to do anything bad. God is really good to you. That law is not your boss any more.

¹⁵ But maybe you think like this, “We can do whatever bad things we want to do, because that law is not our boss any more and God will be good to us anyway.” No way. Don’t think like that.

¹⁶ You know that if you always do whatever another person wants, you make him your boss. So if you do bad things all the time, you make those bad things your boss, and in the end you will die. But if you do whatever God wants all the time you make him your boss, and in the end he will say that you are really good.

¹⁷ Actually you used to do bad things all the time but now you have made God your boss and you really want to do whatever he wants. I thank God for this.

¹⁸ You are free now. You don’t have to do those bad things any more but you have got a new good boss now and you have to do good things all the time.

¹⁹ (I’m trying to say this in a way that you will really understand.) In the past you used your body for wrong things, like you worked for a boss that made you do bad things. But now you have to use your bodies for good things. You work for God and he gets you to do good things so that you will be his special people.

²⁰ In those days you worked for the wrong boss. You worked for that old part of you that made you want to do bad things. So you did bad things and you never wanted to do good things.

²¹ And what did you get after you did bad things? You got shame, that’s all. And you know that people that do those things have to die.

¹⁰ For as touchynge that he dyed he dyed concernynge synne once. And as touchinge that he liveth he liveth vnto God.

¹¹ Lykewyse ymagen ye also that ye are deed concernynge synne: but are alive vnto God thorow Iesus Christ oure Lorde.

¹² Let not synne raygne therfore in youre mortall bodyes that ye shuld thervnto obey in the lustes of it.

¹³ Nether geve ye youre members as instrumentes of vnrightewesnes vnto synne: but geve youre selves vnto God as they that are alive from deeth. And geve youre membres as iustrumetes of rightewesnes vnto God.

¹⁴ Let not synne have power over you. For ye are not vnder the lawe but vnder grace.

¹⁵ What then? Shall we synne because we are not vnder the lawe: but vnder grace? God forbyd.

¹⁶ Remember ye not how that to whom soever ye comit youre selves as servautes to obey his servauntes ye are to whom ye obey: whether it be of synne vnto deeth or of obedience vnto rightewesnes?

¹⁷ God be thanked that though ye were once the servauntes of synne ye have yet obeyed with herte vnto the forme of doctryne wher vnto ye were delyvered.

¹⁸ Ye are then made fre from synne and are be come the servauntes of rightewesnes.

¹⁹ I will speake grossly because of the infirmitie of youre flesshe. As ye have geve youre membres servauntes to vnclennes and to iniquitie from iniquitie vnto iniquitie: even so nowe geve youre membres servantes vnto rightewesnes that ye maye be sanctified.

¹⁶ Do you not know that the one to whom you present yourselves as slaves is the one to which you are obedient, the one you must obey? This is true whether you are slaves to sin which leads to death, or slaves to obedience which leads to righteousness.

¹⁰ for in that he died, to the sin he died once, and in that he liveth, he liveth to God;

¹¹ so also ye, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to the sin, and living to God in Jesus Christ our Lord.

¹² Let not then the sin reign in your mortal body, to obey it in its desires;

¹³ neither present ye your members instruments of unrighteousness to the sin, but present yourselves to God as living out of the dead, and your members instruments of righteousness to God;

¹⁴ for sin over you shall not have lordship, for ye are not under law, but under grace.

¹⁵ What then? shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? let it not be!
