Romans 3:13-27 in English

¹³ Their throat is an open sepulchre; With their tongues they have used deceit: The poison of asps is under their lips:

¹⁴ Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:

¹⁵ Their feet are swift to shed blood;

¹⁶ Destruction and misery are in their ways;

¹⁷ And the way of peace have they not known:

¹⁸ There is no fear of God before their eyes.

¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it speaketh to them that are under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God:

²⁰ because by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified in his sight; for through the law cometh the knowledge of sin.

²¹ But now apart from the law a righteousness of God hath been manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

²² even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ unto all them that believe; for there is no distinction;

²³ for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;

²⁴ being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

²⁵ whom God set forth to be a propitiation, through faith, in his blood, to show his righteousness because of the passing over of the sins done aforetime, in the forbearance of God;

²⁶ for the showing, I say, of his righteousness at this present season: that he might himself be just, and the justifier of him that hath faith in Jesus.

²⁷ Where then is the glorying? It is excluded. By what manner of law? of works? Nay: but by a law of faith.

²⁰ Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

²¹ But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

²² Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

²³ For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

²⁴ Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

²⁵ Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

²⁶ To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

²⁷ Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.

¹³ What people say MTY is foul/bad, like the smell that comes from a grave that has been {that people have} opened MET. By what people say MTY, they deceive people. By what they say MTY they injure people, just like the poison of snakes injures people MET.

¹⁴ They are continually ◄cursing/asking God to do harmful things to► others and saying ◄cruel/harsh/hateful► things MTY.

¹⁵ They ◄go quickly/are eager► to murder people MTY.

¹⁶ Wherever they go, they ruin everything and make people miserable MTY.

¹⁷ They have not/never known how to live peacefully with other people.

¹⁸ They absolutely refuse to fear/reverence God SYN!

¹⁹ Furthermore, we know that it is to Jewish people, who are required to obey God's laws, that Moses wrote those laws PRS. We can infer from this that there are no Jews or non-Jews SYN who are able to say anything in reply to God's saying that he will punish them for having sinned. God has declared everyone in the world MTY guilty!

²⁰ It is not because people have done the things that God's laws require that God will ◄erase the record of their sins/declare them no longer guilty for sin►, because no one has done those things completely. In fact, the result of our knowing God's laws is that we know clearly that we have sinned (OR, are sinful).

²¹ But God's ◄erasing the record of our sins/declaring us no longer guilty► does not depend on our obeying the laws that he gave Moses. It has now been { God has now} revealed to us how he erases the record of our sins by a different way. It was written about by Moses { Moses wrote about it} in the laws PRS God gave him, and it was also written about by the prophets {the prophets also wrote about it}.

²² God erases the record of our sins because we trust in what Jesus Christ has done for us. God does this for every person who trusts in Christ, because he considers that there is no difference between Jews and non-Jews.

²³ All people have done evil, and all people have failed to accomplish the glorious goals that God set for them.

²⁴ Our record of sins has been erased {God erased the record of our sins} by God acting kindly to forgive our sins, without our doing anything to earn it. Christ Jesus accomplished this by dying for us.

²⁵ God showed that Christ was the one who would atone for (OR, forgive) our sins with the blood that flowed from his body when he died. God redeems/forgives us because of our trusting in Christ's having died for us. God wanted to show that he acts justly. He wanted to do that because, before Jesus came, God did not punish everyone who sinned. So it seemed as though he was not being just. But he was overlooking people's sins during that time,

²⁶ because he is patient. God arranged for Jesus to die for us. By doing that, God now shows that he is just, and he shows that he is justly able to erase the record of sins for everyone who trusts/believes in Jesus.

²⁷ It is not at all RHQ because of our obeying the laws of Moses that God erases the record of our sins. So, ◄there is no way that we can boast that God does that because of our obeying those laws./how can we boast about God erasing the record of our sins because of our obeying those laws?► RHQ Instead, it is because of our believing/trusting in Christ that God erases the record of our sins.

¹³ Their throat is like an open place of death; with their tongues they have said what is not true: the poison of snakes is under their lips:

¹⁴ Whose mouth is full of curses and bitter words:

¹⁵ Their feet are quick in running after blood;

¹⁶ Destruction and trouble are in their ways;

¹⁷ And of the way of peace they have no knowledge:

¹⁸ There is no fear of God before their eyes.

¹⁹ Now, we have knowledge that what the law says is for those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and all men may be judged by God:

²⁰ Because by the works of the law no man is able to have righteousness in his eyes, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

²¹ But now without the law there is a revelation of the righteousness of God, to which witness is given by the law and the prophets;

²² That is, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ, to all those who have faith; and one man is not different from another,

²³ For all have done wrong and are far from the glory of God;

²⁴ And they may have righteousness put to their credit, freely, by his grace, through the salvation which is in Christ Jesus:

²⁵ Whom God has put forward as the sign of his mercy, through faith, by his blood, to make clear his righteousness when, in his pity, God let the sins of earlier times go without punishment;

²⁶ And to make clear his righteousness now, so that he might himself be upright, and give righteousness to him who has faith in Jesus.

²⁷ What reason, then, is there for pride? It is shut out. By what sort of law? of works? No, but by a law of faith.

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the things the law says, it speaks to those under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world be under judgment to God.

²⁰ Wherefore by works of law no flesh shall be justified before him; for by law is knowledge of sin.

²¹ But now without law righteousness of God is manifested, borne witness to by the law and the prophets;

²² righteousness of God by faith of Jesus Christ towards all, and upon all those who believe: for there is no difference;

²³ for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

²⁴ being justified freely by his grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;

²⁵ whom God has set forth a mercy-seat, through faith in his blood, for the shewing forth of his righteousness, in respect of the passing by the sins that had taken place before, through the forbearance of God;

²⁶ for the shewing forth of his righteousness in the present time, so that he should be just, and justify him that is of the faith of Jesus.

²⁷ Where then is boasting? It has been excluded. By what law? of works? Nay, but by law of faith;

²⁰ Because by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified before him. For by the law is the knowledge of sin.

²¹ But now without the law the justice of God is made manifest, being witnessed by the law and the prophets.

²² Even the justice of God, by faith of Jesus Christ, unto all and upon all them that believe in him: for there is no distinction:

²³ For all have sinned, and do need the glory of God.

²⁴ Being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption, that is in Christ Jesus,

²⁵ Whom God hath proposed to be a propitiation, through faith in his blood, to the shewing of his justice, for the remission of former sins,

²⁶ Through the forbearance of God, for the shewing of his justice in this time; that he himself may be just, and the justifier of him, who is of the faith of Jesus Christ.

²⁷ Where is then thy boasting? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith.

¹³ Their throat is an opened grave; with their tongues they deceived; the poison of asps is under their lips;

¹⁴ Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.

¹⁵ Their feet are swift to shed blood;

¹⁶ Ruin and misery are in their ways;

¹⁷ and the way of peace they did not know.

¹⁸ There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

¹⁹ Now we know that as many things as the law says, it speaks to those under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may be held accountable to God.

²⁰ Therefore by works of the law no flesh shall be justified in His sight, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

²¹ But now the righteousness of God apart from the law has been revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,

²² even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and upon all those that believe. For there is no distinction;

²³ for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God,

²⁴ being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

²⁵ whom God set forth as a propitiation through faith in His blood, for a demonstration of His righteousness through the passing over of the sins having previously committed, in the forbearance of God,

²⁶ for a demonstration of His righteousness in the present time, that He might be just and the justifier of he who has faith in Jesus.

²⁷ Where then is boasting? It is excluded. Through what law? Of works? No, but through the law of faith.

¹³ “Their throat is an opened grave; they habitually deceive with their tongues.” “Viper's venom is under their lips”;

¹⁴ “whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”

¹⁵ “Their feet are swift to shed blood;

¹⁶ ruin and wretchedness are in their paths,

¹⁷ and the way of peace they have not known.”

¹⁸ “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be shut and the whole world become accountable to God.

²⁰ It follows that no flesh will be justified in His sight by the works of the law, because through the law comes the real knowledge of sin.

²¹ But now, apart from law, a righteousness from God has been revealed, being attested by the Law and the Prophets,

²² namely, a righteousness from God through faith in Jesus Christ, into all and upon all those who believe. There is no difference:

²³ all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

²⁴ being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus;

²⁵ whom God has openly made available as a propitiation through the faith in His blood, to demonstrate His righteousness because of the passing over, in God's forbearance, of the previously committed sins;

²⁶ to demonstrate His righteousness at this present time, so as to be just, Himself, and the justifier of him who is of the Faith of Jesus.

²⁷ Where then is the boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law, that of works? No, but by a law of faith.

¹³ Their throats are like an open grave; their tongues spread deceit; their lips ooze with the venom of snakes.

¹⁴ Their mouths are full of bitterness and curses,

¹⁵ and they are quick to cause pain and death.

¹⁶ Their way leads to disaster and misery;

¹⁷ they don't know how to live in peace.

¹⁸ They don't care about respecting God at all.”

¹⁹ It's clear that everything in the law applies to those who live under the law so that no one could have any excuses, and to make sure everyone in the whole world is answerable to God.

²⁰ For no one is made right before God by doing what the law requires. The law only helps us recognize what sin really is.

²¹ But now God's character of goodness and right has been demonstrated. It has nothing to do with law-keeping, even though it was spoken of by the law and the prophets.

²² This character of God that is good and right comes to everyone who trusts in Jesus Christ, those who place their confidence in him. It doesn't matter who we are:

²³ We have all sinned, and we fall far short of God's glorious ideal.

²⁴ Yet through the free gift of his grace God makes us right through Christ Jesus who sets us free.

²⁵ God openly presented Jesus as the gift that brings peace to those trusting in him, the one who shed his blood. God did this to demonstrate he is truly good and right, for previously he would hold back and pass over sins,

²⁶ but now at this present time God proves he is fair and does what is right, and that he makes right those who trust in Jesus.

²⁷ So do we have anything to boast about then? Absolutely not, there's no place for that! And why's that? Is it because we follow the law of observing requirements? No, we follow the law of trusting in God.

¹⁴ Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitternesse.

¹⁵ Their feete are swift to shead blood.

¹⁶ Destruction and calamity are in their waies,

¹⁷ And ye way of peace they haue not knowen.

¹⁸ The feare of God is not before their eies.

¹⁹ Now we know that whatsoeuer ye Lawe saieth, it saieth it to them which are vnder ye Law, that euery mouth may bee stopped, and all the world be subiect to the iudgement of God.

²⁰ Therefore by the woorkes of the Lawe shall no flesh be iustified in his sight: for by the Lawe commeth the knowledge of sinne.

²¹ But nowe is the righteousnesse, of God made manifest without the Lawe, hauing witnes of the Lawe and of the Prophets,

²² To wit, the righteousnesse of God by the faith of Iesus Christ, vnto all, and vpon all that beleeue.

²³ For there is no difference: for all haue sinned, and are depriued of the glorie of God,

²⁴ And are iustified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Christ Iesus,

²⁵ Whom God hath set forth to be a reconciliation through faith in his blood to declare his righteousnes, by the forgiuenesse of the sinnes that are passed,

²⁶ Through the patience of God, to shewe at this time his righteousnesse, that hee might be iust, and a iustifier of him which is of the faith of Iesus.

²⁷ Where is then the reioycing? It is excluded. By what Lawe? of woorkes? Nay: but by the Lawe of faith.

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the Law saith, it saith to those who are under the Law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world become subject to condemnation before God.

²⁰ Because by works of the Law no flesh shall be accepted as righteous: for by the Law is the knowledge of sin.

²¹ But now, apart from the Law, the righteousness which is of God, to which the Law and the Prophets bear testimony,

²² even the righteousness which is of God through faith in Jesus Christ, hath been made manifest to all and for all believers. For there is no distinction.

²³ For all have sinned, and fail of obtaining the glory which cometh from God;

²⁴ being accepted as righteous freely, by his grace, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

²⁵ whom, in his blood, through faith, God hath set forth as a propitiatory sacrifice, in order to manifest his righteousness, on account of his passing by, in his forbearance, the sins committed in former times;

²⁶ in order to manifest his righteousness at the present time, so that he may be righteous, and accept as righteous him who hath faith.

²⁷ Where then is the boasting? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay; but by the law of faith.

¹³ ‘Their throats are like opened graves; they deceive with their tongues.’ ‘The venom of snakes lies behind their lips,’

¹⁴ ‘And their mouths are full of bitter curses.’

¹⁹ Now we know that everything said in the Law is addressed to those who are under its authority, in order that every mouth may be closed, and to bring the whole world under God's judgement.

²⁰ For no human being will be pronounced righteous before God as the result of obedience to Law; for it is Law that shows what sin is.

²¹ But now, quite apart from Law, the divine righteousness stands revealed, and to it the Law and the prophets bear witness —

²² the divine righteousness which is bestowed, through faith in Jesus Christ, on all, without distinction, who believe in him.

²³ For all have sinned, and all fall short of God's glorious ideal,

²⁴ but, in his loving kindness, are being freely pronounced righteous through the deliverance found in Christ Jesus.

²⁵ For God set him before the world, to be, by the shedding of his blood, a means of reconciliation through faith. And this God did to prove his righteousness, and because, in his forbearance, he had passed over the sins that people had previously committed;

²⁶ as a proof, I repeat, at the present time, of his own righteousness, that he might be righteous in our eyes, and might pronounce righteous the person who takes their stand on faith in Jesus.

²⁷ What, then, becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what sort of Law? A Law requiring obedience? No, a Law requiring faith.

¹³ ‘Their throats are like opened graves; they deceive with their tongues.’ ‘The venom of snakes lies behind their lips,’

¹⁴ ‘And their mouths are full of bitter curses.’

¹⁵ ‘Swift are their feet to shed blood.

¹⁶ Distress and trouble dog their steps,

²² the divine righteousness which is bestowed, through faith in Jesus Christ, on all, without distinction, who believe in him.

²³ For all have sinned, and all fall short of God's glorious ideal,

²⁴ but, in his loving kindness, are being freely pronounced righteous through the deliverance found in Christ Jesus.

²⁵ For God set him before the world, to be, by the shedding of his blood, a means of reconciliation through faith. And this God did to prove his righteousness, and because, in his forbearance, he had passed over the sins that people had previously committed;

²⁶ as a proof, I repeat, at the present time, of his own righteousness, that he might be righteous in our eyes, and might pronounce righteous the person who takes their stand on faith in Jesus.

²⁷ What, then, becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what sort of Law? A Law requiring obedience? No, a Law requiring faith.

¹³ They say things that make big trouble for other people, Whenever they talk, they tell lies and trick people. Their mouths are like the mouths of a cheeky snakes.

¹⁴ They just swear at other people and say bad things about them.

¹⁵ They quickly get up and to kill other people,

¹⁶ Wherever they go they hurt people and make them really sad.

¹⁷ They can’t live without fighting.

¹⁸ They don’t respect God or take any notice of him.”

¹⁹ You know, it’s like this. God gave the law to the Jewish people and they have to do everything it says. And God is the judge of everybody in the whole world. We all have to answer to him. Nobody has kept all of that law, so nobody can argue with him. Nobody can tell God, “I have kept all those laws, so I’m all right. You can’t punish me.” We can’t say that because we all broke that law at some time. So why is the law there? It is there just to let us know that we always go wrong. That’s what it is there for.

²¹ But now God shows us a different way. If we follow this way he will be happy with us. It is not about that law, whether we follow it or not, but it is about Jesus Christ, whether we believe in him or not. God tells us about this in his book. (We can read it in the part that has his law as well as in the other part that he got his men to write.) God will save us if we trust in Jesus. It doesn’t matter who we are. God treats everybody the same.

²³ We all went wrong and did bad things. None of us is as good as God wants us to be.

²⁴ But Jesus Christ took the blame for us. He paid the cost for those bad things that we did, so now God is really good to us and says that we are all right now, he will not blame us any more. And this doesn’t cost us anything.

²⁵ God sent Jesus to die for us so that, if we believe that he died for us, God isn’t angry with us any more. Jesus let people kill him and spill out his blood, and now, if we trust him, God says we are all right. In this way God shows that he was right and fair in the past, at those times when he didn’t punish people for the bad things they did,

²⁶ and he shows that he is fair at this time now when he tells everyone that believes in Jesus that they are all right now.

²⁷ So none of us can talk up big about anything that we ever did. The only thing that matters is this, we believe in Jesus.

¹³ Their throte is an open sepulchre with their tounges they have disceaved: the poyson of Aspes is vnder their lippes.

¹⁴ Whose mouthes are full of coursynge and bitternes.

¹⁵ Their fete are swyfte to sheed bloud.

¹⁶ Destruccion and wretchednes are in their wayes.

¹⁷ And the waye of peace they have not knowen.

¹⁸ There is no feare of God before their eyes.

¹⁹ Ye and we knowe that whatsoever the lawe sayth he sayth it to them which are vnder the lawe. That all mouthes maye be stopped and all the worlde be subdued to god because that by the dedes of the lawe shall no flesshe be iustified in the sight of God.

²⁰ For by the lawe commeth the knowledge of synne.

²¹ Now verely is the rightewesnes that cometh of God declared without the fulfillinge of the lawe havinge witnes yet of the lawe and of the Prophetes.

²² The rightewesnes no dout which is good before God cometh by the fayth of Iesus Christ vnto all and vpon all that beleve. Ther is no difference:

²⁴ but are iustified frely by his grace through the redempcion that is in Christ Iesu

²⁵ whom God hath made a seate of mercy thorow faith in his bloud to shewe the rightewesnes which before him is of valoure in that he forgeveth the synnes that are passed which God dyd suffre

²⁶ to shewe at this tyme the rightewesnes that is alowed of him that he myght be counted iuste and a iustifiar of him which belevith on Iesus.

²⁷ Where is then thy reioysinge? It is excluded. By what lawe? by the lawe of workes? Naye: but by the lawe of fayth.

¹⁴ “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”

¹⁵ “Their feet are swift to pour out blood.

¹⁶ Destruction and suffering are in their paths.

¹⁷ These people have not known a way of peace.”

¹⁸ “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to the ones who are under the law. This is in order that every mouth may be shut, and the whole world held accountable to God.

²⁰ This is because no flesh will be justified by the works of the law in his sight. For through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

²¹ But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known. It was witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,

²² that is, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe. For there is no distinction.

²⁴ and they are freely justified by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

²⁵ For God provided Christ Jesus as a propitiation through faith in his blood. He offered Christ as proof of his justice, because of his disregard of previous sins

²⁶ in his patience. This all happened for the demonstration of his righteousness at this present time. This was so he could prove himself just, and to show that he justifies anyone because of faith in Jesus.

²⁴ and be justified freely by his grace, by the again-buying or the redemption that is in Christ.

²⁵ Whom God ordained forgiver or purposed an helper, by faith in his blood, to the showing of his right-wiseness, for the remission of before-going sins, in the bearing up of God,

²⁶ to the showing of his rightwise-ness in this time, that he be just, and justifying him that is of the faith of Jesus Christ.

²⁷ Where then is thy glorying? It is excluded. By what law? Of deeds doing? Nay, but by the law of faith.

¹⁹ And we know, that whatever things the law speaketh, it speaketh to them that be in the law, (so) that each mouth be stopped, and each world be made subject to God.

¹⁹ And we have known that as many things as the law saith, to those in the law it doth speak, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may come under judgment to God;

²⁰ wherefore by works of law shall no flesh be declared righteous before Him, for through law is a knowledge of sin.

²¹ And now apart from law hath the righteousness of God been manifested, testified to by the law and the prophets,

²² and the righteousness of God is through the faith of Jesus Christ to all, and upon all those believing, — for there is no difference,

²³ for all did sin, and are come short of the glory of God —

²⁴ being declared righteous freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

²⁵ whom God did set forth a mercy seat, through the faith in his blood, for the shewing forth of His righteousness, because of the passing over of the bygone sins in the forbearance of God —

²⁶ for the shewing forth of His righteousness in the present time, for His being righteous, and declaring him righteous who is of the faith of Jesus.
