¹⁵ in that they show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness therewith, and their thoughts one with another accusing or else excusing them);

¹⁶ in the day when God shall judge the secrets of men, according to my gospel, by Jesus Christ.

¹⁷ But if thou bearest the name of a Jew, and restest upon the law, and gloriest in God,

¹⁸ and knowest his will, and approvest the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law,

¹⁹ and art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them that are in darkness,

²⁰ a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of babes, having in the law the form of knowledge and of the truth;

²¹ thou therefore that teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?

²² thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou rob temples?

²³ thou who gloriest in the law, through thy transgression of the law dishonorest thou God?

²⁵ For circumcision indeed profiteth, if thou be a doer of the law: but if thou be a transgressor of the law, thy circumcision is become uncircumcision.

²⁶ If therefore the uncircumcision keep the ordinances of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be reckoned for circumcision?

²⁵ For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.

²⁶ Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?

¹⁵ They show that they know in their own minds what God commands in his laws MET, as each person in his very own conscience either accuses or excuses/defends himself concerning his own behavior.

¹⁶ God will punish people at the time when he will judge them according to what they have thought and done. He will judge them even for the things that they have done secretly. He will judge people by authorizing Christ Jesus to judge them. This is what I tell people when I preach the gospel to them.

¹⁷ Now I have something to say to any one of you Jews to whom I am writing: You (sg) boast about yourself saying, “I am a Jew.” You (sg) trust that God will save you because you possess the laws that he gave to Moses. You boast that you belong to God.

¹⁸ You know what God desires. Because you have been taught { people have taught you} God's laws, you are able to know which things are right and to choose to do them.

¹⁹ You are certain that you are able to show God's truth to non-Jews, as guides show the road to those who are blind MET. You are certain that by what you say you can show God's way to the non-Jews who do not understand it, as a light shows the way to those who walk in the darkness MET, DOU.

²⁰ You are certain that you can instruct/correct non-Jews, whom you consider foolish because of their not understanding God's message. Because you have in God's laws a written expression of true knowledge HEN, you are certain that you can teach people who, being like children, do not know God's truth MET.

²¹ Since you claim that you have all these advantages because you are a Jew, ◄it is disgusting that you who teach other people that they should obey the laws God gave Moses do not obey the laws that you yourself teach!/why is it that you who teach other people that they should obey the laws God gave Moses do not obey the laws that you yourself teach?► RHQ You who preach that people should not steal things, it is disgusting that you yourself steal things! RHQ

²² You who command people not to have sexual relations with someone to whom they are not married, it is disgusting that you commit adultery yourself! RHQ You who detest idols, it is disgusting that you rob temples where people worship idols! RHQ

²³ You who boast saying, “ I have God's laws,” it is disgusting that you disobey those same laws! RHQ As a result you are insulting God!

²⁴ You must not be like our ancestors, about whom were written these words in the Scriptures: “The non-Jews speak evil about God because of the evil actions of many of you Jews.” The non-Jews say God must be a hypocrite if he condones the behavior of people like you.

²⁵ Any one of you who is circumcised to show that he belongs to God can benefit from that if he obeys the laws God gave to Moses. But if you (sg), a circumcised person, disobey God's laws, God will consider that you who are circumcised are no better in God's sight than someone who is not circumcised.

²⁶ This means that God will certainly consider that even non-Jews who are not circumcised can become his people if they obey the things that he commanded in his laws. RHQ

¹⁵ Because the work of the law is seen in their hearts, their sense of right and wrong giving witness to it, while their minds are at one time judging them and at another giving them approval;

¹⁶ In the day when God will be a judge of the secrets of men, as it says in the good news of which I am a preacher, through Jesus Christ.

¹⁷ But as for you who have the name of Jew, and are resting on the law, and take pride in God,

¹⁸ And have knowledge of his desires, and are a judge of the things which are different, having the learning of the law,

¹⁹ In the belief that you are a guide to the blind, a light to those in the dark,

²⁰ A teacher of the foolish, having in the law the form of knowledge and of what is true;

²¹ You who give teaching to others, do you give it to yourself? you who say that a man may not take what is not his, do you take what is not yours?

²² You who say that a man may not be untrue to his wife, are you true to yours? you who are a hater of images, do you do wrong to the house of God?

²³ You who take pride in the law, are you doing wrong to the honour of God by behaviour which is against the law?

²⁴ For the name of God is shamed among the Gentiles because of you, as it is said in the holy Writings.

²⁵ It is true that circumcision is of use if you keep the law, but if you go against the law it is as if you had it not.

²⁶ If those who have not circumcision keep the rules of the law, will it not be credited to them as circumcision?

¹⁵ who shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts accusing or else excusing themselves between themselves;)

¹⁶ in the day when God shall judge the secrets of men, according to my glad tidings, by Jesus Christ.

¹⁷ But if thou art named a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast in God,

¹⁸ and knowest the will, and discerningly approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;

¹⁹ and hast confidence that thou thyself art a leader of the blind, a light of those who are in darkness,

²⁰ an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, having the form of knowledge and of truth in the law:

²¹ thou then that teachest another, dost thou not teach thyself? thou that preachest not to steal, dost thou steal?

²² thou that sayest man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?

²³ thou who boastest in law, dost thou by transgression of the law dishonour God?

²⁴ For the name of God is blasphemed on your account among the nations, according as it is written.

²⁵ For circumcision indeed profits if thou keep the law; but if thou be a law-transgressor, thy circumcision is become uncircumcision.

²⁶ If therefore the uncircumcision keep the requirements of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be reckoned for circumcision,

²¹ Thou therefore that teachest another, teachest not thyself: thou that preachest that men should not steal, stealest:

²² Thou that sayest, men should not commit adultery, committest adultery: thou that abhorrest idols, committest sacrilege:

²³ Thou that makest thy boast of the law, by transgression of the law dishonourest God.

²⁶ If, then, the uncircumcised keep the justices of the law, shall not this uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?

²¹ You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal?

²² You who say, “Do not commit adultery,” do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you commit sacrilege?

²³ You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God through the transgression of the law?

²⁴ For “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” just as it is written.

²⁵ For indeed circumcision profits if you keep the law; but if you are a transgressor of the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.

²⁶ Therefore, if an uncircumcised man keeps the righteous requirements of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision?

¹⁷ Look, you declare yourself a Jew, and rest on the Law, and boast in God,

¹⁸ and know the Will, and approve the superior things, being instructed out of the Law.

¹⁹ Further, you are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those in darkness,

²⁰ an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of the immature, having in the Law the embodiment of knowledge and truth.

²¹ You then, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach not to steal, do you steal?

²² You who say not to commit adultery, do you adulterate? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?

²³ You who boast in the Law, do you dishonor God through the transgression of the Law?

²⁴ For, just as it is written: “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”

²⁵ Now circumcision does have value if you keep the Law, but if you are a transgressor of the Law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.

²⁶ So if the uncircumcised keeps the righteous requirements of the Law, will not his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision?

¹⁵ In this way they show how the law works that's written in their minds. As they think about what they're doing, their conscience either accuses them for doing wrong or defends them for doing what is good and right.

¹⁶ The good news I share is that a day is coming when God will judge, through Jesus Christ, everyone's secret thoughts.

¹⁷ What about you who call yourself a Jew? You rely on the written law and boast about having a special relationship to God.

¹⁸ You know what he wants; you do what's right because you've been taught from the law.

¹⁹ You're absolutely sure that you can guide the blind, and that you are a light to those in the dark.

²⁰ You think you can set ignorant people straight, a teacher of “children,” because you know from the law all the truth there is to know.

²¹ So if you're busy teaching others, why don't you teach yourself? You tell people not to steal, but are you stealing?

²² You tell people not to commit adultery, but are you committing adultery? You tell people not to worship idols, but do you profane temples?

²³ You boast about having the law, but don't you misrepresent God by breaking it?

²⁴ As Scripture says, “God's character is defamed among the foreigners because of you.”

²⁵ Being circumcised has value only if you do what the law says. But if you break the law, your circumcision is as worthless as those who are not circumcised at all.

²⁶ If a man who is not circumcised keeps the law, he should be considered as being circumcised even though he's not.

¹⁶ At the day when God shall iudge the secretes of men by Iesus Christ, according to my Gospel.

¹⁷ Beholde, thou art called a Iewe, and restest in the Lawe, and gloriest in God,

¹⁸ And knowest his will, and triest the things that dissent from it, in that thou art instructed by the Lawe:

¹⁹ And persuadest thy selfe that thou art a guide of the blinde, a light of them which are in darkenesse,

²⁰ An instructer of them which lacke discretion, a teacher of the vnlearned, which hast the forme of knowledge, and of the truth in ye Law.

²¹ Thou therefore, which teachest another, teachest thou not thy selfe? thou that preachest, A man should not steale, doest thou steale?

²² Thou that saist, A man should not commit adulterie, doest thou commit adulterie? thou that abhorrest idoles, committest thou sacrilege?

²³ Thou that gloriest in the Lawe, through breaking the Lawe, dishonourest thou God?

²⁰ an instructor of those who lack wisdom, a teacher of babes, having the form of knowledge and of the truth in the Law,—

²¹ dost thou then who teachest another, not teach thyself? Thou who proclaimest that others should not steal, dost thou steal?

²² Dost thou who forbiddest to commit adultery, thyself commit adultery? Thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou rob temples?

²³ Dost thou who boastest of the Law, dishonor God by breaking the Law?

²⁴ For, as it is written, “the name of God is on your account blasphemed among the gentiles.”

²⁵ For circumcision is indeed a benefit to thee, if thou keep the Law; but if thou art a breaker of the Law, thy circumcision hath become uncircumcision.

²⁶ If then he who is uncircumcised keep the precepts of the Law, shall not he though uncircumcised be regarded as circumcised?

¹⁵ for they show the demands of the Law written on their hearts; their consciences corroborating it, while in their thoughts they argue either in self-accusation or, it may be, in self-defence —

¹⁶ on the day when God passes judgement on people's inmost lives, as the good news that I tell declares that he will do through Christ Jesus.

¹⁷ But, perhaps, you bear the name of ‘Jew,’ and are relying on Law, and boast of belonging to God, and understand his will,

¹⁸ and, having been carefully instructed from the Law, have learnt to appreciate the finer moral distinctions.

¹⁹ Perhaps you are confident that you are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in the dark, an instructor of the unintelligent,

²⁰ and a teacher of the childish, because in the Law you possess the outline of all knowledge and truth.

²¹ Why, then, you teacher of others, don't you teach yourself? Do you preach against stealing, and yet steal?

²² Do you forbid adultery, and yet commit adultery? Do you loathe idols, and yet plunder temples?

²³ Boasting, as you do, of your Law, do you dishonour God by breaking the Law?

¹⁵ They show that God wrote his law inside them. They feel bad whenever they do something that is wrong, but sometimes they do something that is right, and it makes them feel good.

¹⁶ God sees everything that everybody does and everything that everybody thinks. Nobody can hide anything from him. One day God will get Jesus Christ to judge everybody about these things. This is the message that I tell everybody.

¹⁸ and knowest his will and hast experience of good and bad in that thou arte informed by the lawe:

¹⁹ and belevest that thou thy silfe arte a gyde vnto the blynde a lyght to them which are in darcknes

²⁰ an informer of them which lacke discrecion a teacher of vnlearned which hast the ensample of that which ought to be knowen and of the truth in the lawe.

²¹ But thou which teachest another teachest not thy selfe. Thou preachest a man shuld not steale: and yet thou stealest.

²² Thou sayst a man shuld not commit advoutry: and thou breakest wedlocke. Thou abhorrest ymages and robbest God of his honoure.

²³ Thou reioysest in the lawe and thorow breakinge the lawe dishonourest God.

²⁴ For the name of god is evyll spoken of amonge the Gentyls thorowe you as it is written.

²⁵ Circumcision verely avayleth if thou kepe the lawe. But if thou breake the lawe thy circumcision is made vncircumcision.

²⁶ Therfore if the vncircumcised kepe the ryght thinges contayned in the lawe: shall not his vncircumcision be counted for circumcision?

¹⁵ By this they show that the actions required by the law are written in their hearts. Their conscience also bears witness to them, and their own thoughts either accuse or defend them to themselves

¹⁶ and also to God. That will happen on the day when God will judge the secrets of all people, according to my gospel, through Jesus Christ.

¹⁷ But if you call yourself a Jew and rest upon the law and boast in God,

¹⁸ and know his will and approve of what is excellent because you have been instructed from the law;

¹⁹ and if you are convinced that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness,

²⁰ a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of little children, and that you have in the law the form of knowledge and of the truth, then how does this affect the way you live your life?

²¹ You who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?

²² You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who hate idols, do you rob temples?

²³ You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?

²⁴ For “the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” just as it has been written.

²⁵ For circumcision indeed benefits you if you obey the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision.

²⁶ If, then, the uncircumcised person keeps the requirements of the law, will not his uncircumcision be considered as circumcision?

¹⁵ in that they show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience testifying with them, and their thoughts among themselves accusing or else excusing them)

¹⁶ in the day when God will judge the secrets of men, according to my Good News, by Jesus Christ.

¹⁹ and trustest thyself to be a leader of blind men, the light of them that be in darknesses,

²⁰ a teacher of unwise men, a master of young children, that hast the form of knowing or of science, and of truth in the law;

²¹ what then teachest thou another, and teachest not thyself? Thou that preachest that me/that men shall not steal, stealest? or Thou that preachest to not steal, stealest?

²² Thou that teachest that me/that men shall not do lechery, doest lechery? or Thou that sayest to not do lechery, doest lechery? Thou that loathest maumets or idols, doest sacrilege?

²³ Thou that hast glory in the law, unworshippest God by breaking of the law?

²⁵ For circumcision profiteth, if thou keep the law; but if thou be a trespasser against the law, thy circumcision is made prepuce.

²⁶ Therefore if prepuce keep the rightwiseness of the law, whether his prepuce shall not be areckoned into circumcision?

¹⁵ that show the work of the law written in their hearts (or who show the work of the Law written on their hearts). For the conscience of them yieldeth to them a witnessing (or a testimony) betwixt themselves of thoughts that be accusing or defending,

¹⁶ in the day when God shall deem the privy things of men after my gospel, by Jesus Christ. (on the day when God shall judge the private, or the secret, things of men, according to my Gospel or Good News, through Jesus Christ.)

¹⁷ But if thou art named a Jew, and restest in the law, and hast glory (or pride) in God, (But if thou art called a Jew, and leanest on the Law, and hast boasted about God,)

¹⁸ and hast known his will, and thou learned by the law (ap)provest or hast proved the more profitable things,

¹⁹ and trustest thyself to be a leader of blind men, the light of them that be in darknesses (or the light for those who be in darkness),

²⁰ a teacher of unwise men, a master of young children (or a teacher of young children), that hast the form of cunning, (or of knowing), or of science, (or of knowledge), and of (the) truth in the law;

²¹ what then teachest thou another, and teachest not thyself? (or why then teachest thou someone else, but teachest not thyself?) Thou that preachest that me/that men shall not steal, stealest? or Thou that preachest to not steal, stealest?

²² Thou that teachest that me/that men shall not do lechery, doest lechery? or Thou that sayest to not do lechery, doest lechery? Thou that loathest maumets or idols, doest sacrilege? (Thou who teachest that me or that men shall not do adultery, doest adultery? Thou who loathest idols, doest sacrilege?)

²³ Thou that hast glory in the law, unworshippest God by breaking of the law? (Thou who hast boasted about the Law, dishonourest God by breaking the Law?)

²⁴ For the name of God is blasphemed by you among (the) heathen men, as it is written.

²⁵ For circumcision profiteth, if thou keep the law; but if thou be a trespasser against the law, thy circumcision is made prepuce. (For circumcision profiteth, if thou keep the Law; but if thou be a trespasser against the Law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.)

²⁶ Therefore if (the) prepuce (or the heathen men) keep the rightwiseness of the law, whether his prepuce shall not be areckoned into circumcision? (And so if the uncircumcised, or the Gentiles, keep the righteousness of the Law, shall not his uncircumcision be reckoned as circumcision?)

²¹ Thou, then, who art teaching another, thyself dost thou not teach?

²² thou who art preaching not to steal, dost thou steal? thou who art saying not to commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou who art abhorring the idols, dost thou rob temples?

²³ thou who in the law dost boast, through the transgression of the law God dost thou dishonour?

²⁴ for the name of God because of you is evil spoken of among the nations, according as it hath been written.

²⁵ For circumcision, indeed, doth profit, if law thou mayest practise, but if a transgressor of law thou mayest be, thy circumcision hath become uncircumcision.

²⁶ If, therefore the uncircumcision the righteousness of the law may keep, shall not his uncircumcision for circumcision be reckoned?
