Romans 14:4-20 in English

⁴ Who art thou that judgest the servant of another? to his own lord he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be made to stand; for the Lord hath power to make him stand.

⁵ One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let each man be fully assured in his own mind.

⁶ He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord: and he that eateth, eateth unto the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, unto the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.

⁷ For none of us liveth to himself, and none dieth to himself.

⁸ For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; or whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s.

⁹ For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

¹⁰ But thou, why dost thou judge thy brother? or thou again, why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment-seat of God.

¹¹ For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, to me every knee shall bow, And every tongue shall confess to God.

¹² So then each one of us shall give account of himself to God.

¹³ Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge ye this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock in his brother’s way, or an occasion of falling.

¹⁴ I know, and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean of itself: save that to him who accounteth anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean.

¹⁵ For if because of meat thy brother is grieved, thou walkest no longer in love. Destroy not with thy meat him for whom Christ died.

¹⁶ Let not then your good be evil spoken of:

¹⁷ for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

¹⁸ For he that herein serveth Christ is well-pleasing to God, and approved of men.

¹⁹ So then let us follow after things which make for peace, and things whereby we may edify one another.

²⁰ Overthrow not for meat’s sake the work of God. All things indeed are clean; howbeit it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.

¹⁰ But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

¹¹ For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.

¹² So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

¹³ Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way.

¹⁴ I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean.

¹⁵ But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died.

¹⁶ Let not then your good be evil spoken of:

¹⁷ For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

¹⁸ For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.

¹⁹ Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.

²⁰ For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.

²⁰ Overthrow not for meat’s sake the work of God. All things indeed are clean; howbeit it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.

⁴ God is the master of us all, so ◄ he is the one who will decide whether those people have done wrong!/who are you to decide whether they have done wrong?► RHQ Therefore, you have no right RHQ to condemn those who eat everything, because they are also God's servants! And just like it is the servants' own master who accepts or condemns MTY his servants, it is God who accepts or condemns us. And believers will be accepted by the Lord { the Lord will accept believers} regardless of whether they eat meat or not, because he is able to keep them trusting in him.

⁵ Some people regard certain days as holy and think that the other days are not holy. Other people regard all days as equally suitable for worshipping God. Each person should be fully convinced about such matters, thinking and deciding for himself and not for others.

⁶ As for those who believe that they should worship on a certain day of the week, it is to honor the Lord that they worship on that day. And as for those who think that it is all right to eat all kinds of food, it is to honor the Lord that they eat those foods, as is clear from their thanking God for the food that they eat. As for those who abstain from eating certain kinds of food, it is to honor the Lord that they do not eat those foods, and they also thank God for the food that they do eat. So doing either of those things is not wrong in itself.

⁷ None of us should live merely to please ourselves, and none of us should choose when or how we will die, merely to please ourselves.

⁸ While we live, it is the Lord whom we belong to and should be trying to please, and not just ourselves. And when we die, it is the Lord whom we should be trying to please. So, while we live and also when we die, we should be trying to please the Lord to whom we belong, not just ourselves,

⁹ because the very purpose for which Christ died and became alive again is that he might be Lord whom all people should try to please, both of those who have already died and of those who are still living.

¹⁰ ◄It is disgraceful that you who practice certain religious regulations say that God will punish your fellow believers who do not practice those regulations!/Why do you who practice certain religious regulations say God will punish your fellow believers who do not practice such regulations?► RHQ I say this because the time will come when all of us will stand before God in order that he will say whether or not he approves MTY of what we have done. So you who do not practice such regulations, ◄should not despise your fellow believers who practice them!/why do you despise your fellow believers who practice them?► RHQ

¹¹ We know this because it is written { a prophet/Isaiah wrote} what God has said: Everyone will bow down before me! That is as certain as the fact that I live IDM! Everyone SYN will acknowledge that because I am God, I have the right to judge and punish people.

¹² So it is clear that it is God who will decide whether or not he approves of what each of us has done.

¹³ Since it is God who will judge everyone, we must stop saying that God should punish some of our fellow believers! Instead, you/we should decide that you/we will not do anything that would be an example that might cause fellow believers to stop trusting in God DOU.

¹⁴ I am absolutely certain DOU because of my close relationship with (OR, my belonging to) the Lord Jesus that there is nothing that by itself is wrong to eat. But if people think it is wrong to eat something, then to them it is wrong to eat it. So you should not encourage them to eat it.

¹⁵ If you eat food MET that anyone for whom Christ died thinks that it is wrong to eat, that person might be encouraged { you might be encouraging that person} to do something that he believes is wrong. As a result, you might cause that fellow believer to stop trusting in God. In that way he would be ruined spiritually just because you have stopped behaving as one who loves others should behave!

¹⁶ Similarly, do not do something that you think is good if, as a result, your fellow believer would sin and then others would speak evil of you who say that you are Christians.

¹⁷ Letting God rule our lives MET does not mean that we must obey regulations about eating or drinking something! Instead, it means we must live righteously, act peacefully towards others, and be joyful by the power of the Holy Spirit.

¹⁸ Those who serve Christ by acting in such ways please God, and others will also respect them.

¹⁹ So we should always eagerly try to live in a way that will cause peace among fellow Christians, and we should try to do what will help each other to mature spiritually.

²⁰ Do not destroy what God has done in the life of any believer just because of your eating certain kinds of food MET which that person considers wrong to eat! God permits us to eat every kind of food. But if, by your eating certain kinds of food, you encourage another person to sin by doing what he believes is wrong, you are doing wrong.

⁴ Who are you who judge another’s servant? To his own lord he stands or falls. Yes, he will be made to stand, for God has power to make him stand.

⁴ Who are you to make yourself a judge of another man's servant? it is to his master that he is responsible for good or bad. Yes, his place will be safe, because the Lord is able to keep him from falling.

⁵ This man puts one day before another: to that man they are the same. Let every man be certain in his mind.

⁶ He who keeps the day, keeps it to the Lord; and he who takes food, takes it as to the Lord, for he gives praise to God; and he who does not take food, to the Lord he takes it not, and gives praise to God.

⁷ For every man's life and every man's death has a relation to others as well as to himself.

⁸ As long as we have life we are living to the Lord; or if we give up our life it is to the Lord; so if we are living, or if our life comes to an end, we are the Lord's.

⁹ And for this purpose Christ went into death and came back again, that he might be the Lord of the dead and of the living.

¹⁰ But you, why do you make yourself your brother's judge? or again, why have you no respect for your brother? because we will all have to take our place before God as our judge.

¹¹ For it is said in the holy Writings, By my life, says the Lord, to me every knee will be bent, and every tongue will give worship to God.

¹² So every one of us will have to give an account of himself to God.

¹³ Then let us not be judges of one another any longer: but keep this in mind, that no man is to make it hard for his brother, or give him cause for doubting.

¹⁴ I am conscious of this, and am certain in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself; but for the man in whose opinion it is unclean, for him it is unclean.

¹⁵ And if because of food your brother is troubled, then you are no longer going on in the way of love. Do not let your food be destruction to him for whom Christ went into death.

¹⁶ Let it not be possible for men to say evil about your good:

¹⁷ For the kingdom of God is not food and drink, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

¹⁸ And he who in these things is Christ's servant, is pleasing to God and has the approval of men.

¹⁹ So then, let us go after the things which make peace, and the things by which we may be a help to one another.

²⁰ Do not let the work of God come to nothing on account of food. All things are certainly clean; but it is evil for that man who by taking food makes it hard for another.

¹⁴ I know, and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean of itself; except to him who reckons anything to be unclean, to that man it is unclean.

¹⁵ For if on account of meat thy brother is grieved, thou walkest no longer according to love. Destroy not him with thy meat for whom Christ has died.

¹² So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

¹³ Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another, but rather resolve this: not to put a stumbling block or pitfall in a brother's way.

¹⁴ I know and have been convinced by Sovereign Jesus that nothing is unclean of itself (still, to someone who considers a thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean),

¹⁵ but if your brother is offended because of food, you are no longer walking according to love. Do not, with your food, ruin someone for whom Christ died.

¹⁶ So do not let your good be slandered;

¹⁷ because the Kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in Holy Spirit.

¹⁸ For whoever serves the Christ in these things is satisfying to God and approved by men.

¹⁹ So then, let us pursue the things that promote peace and the things by which one may edify another.

²⁰ Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All things indeed are ‘clean’; however it is wrong for the man who gives offence by eating.

⁴ What right do you have to judge someone else's servant? It's their own master who decides whether they are right or wrong. With the Lord's help they will be able to take their stand for right.

⁵ Some people consider some days more important than others, while others consider each day the same. Everyone should be completely convinced in their own minds.

⁶ Those who respect a special day do so for the Lord; and those who eat without worrying do so for the Lord since they give thanks to God; while those who avoid eating certain things do so for the Lord, and they also give thanks to God.

⁷ None of us live for ourselves, or die for ourselves.

⁸ If we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord—so whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.

⁹ This was the reason Christ died and came back to life—so that he could be the Lord of both the dead and the living.

¹⁰ So why do you criticize your fellow-believer? Why do you despise your fellow-believer? For all of us will stand before God's throne of judgment.

¹¹ For the Scriptures say, “‘As surely as I am alive,’ the Lord says, ‘Every knee shall bow before me, and every tongue will declare that I am God.’”

¹² So every one of us will have to explain ourselves to God.

¹³ Therefore let's not judge each other anymore, but decide to do this instead—we won't put obstacles in the way of fellow-believers, or cause them to fall.

¹⁴ I'm certain—persuaded by the Lord Jesus—that nothing in itself is ceremonially unclean. But if someone considers it to be unclean, to them it is unclean.

¹⁵ If your fellow-believer is hurt by you over matters of food, then you're no longer behaving in a loving way. Don't destroy someone for whom Christ died by the food you choose to eat.

¹⁶ Don't let the good things you do be misrepresented—

¹⁷ for God's kingdom is not about eating and drinking, but about living right, having peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

¹⁸ Anyone who serves Christ in this way pleases God, and is appreciated by others.

¹⁹ So let's pursue the path of peace, and find ways to encourage each other.

²⁰ Don't destroy the work of God with arguments over food. Everything is clean—but it would be wrong to eat and offend others.

⁴ So you can’t tell anybody else they are wrong. God is their boss, not you. So only God can tell them if they do good or go wrong. And he can help them to keep on doing good.

⁵ Here is another thing. Some people think like this, “Some days are special for God and the rest are not.” Other people think, “Each day is the same as every other day.” Each of us has to make up his own mind about this.

⁶ Those that make one day special do so to give respect to God on that day. And those that eat all kinds of food do so to give respect to God. They say thank you to God for that food. And in the same way those that don’t eat some sorts of food do so to give respect to God. They say thank you to God too.

⁷ None of us is his own boss. We belong to God and he is our good boss all the time that we are alive, and he is still our good boss after we die.

⁹ Remember that Jesus died and then became alive again. So now he is the good boss of people that are alive and also the boss of people that are dead.

¹⁰ So then it is God, not you, that can tell other Christians that they are wrong. You can’t think that you are better than any other Christian. No. We’ve all got to stand in front of God one day. Then God will tell each of us the things that we did right and the things that we did wrong.

¹¹ Like we read in God book, “God says, ‘This is for sure. Everybody will get down on their knees in front of me to give respect to me. And everybody will say that I’m really good, the only great God.’”

¹² This means that one day every one of us will have to face God and tell him all about everything that we ever did.

¹³ So we have to stop being like judges. We have to stop telling each other, “You are wrong.” Instead of that we have to make sure that we help other Christians, and make sure we don’t do anything that makes them go wrong.

¹⁴ I know, and I’m really sure, that our leader, Jesus, taught like this, he said, “There is nothing wrong at all with any food.” But somebody might believe that it is wrong to eat some sort of food. Alright, it is wrong for that person to eat it, but not for anybody else.

¹⁵ But if you know something is all right, so you think you will eat it, and if you know that another Christian will get upset if you eat it, then leave it. Don’t eat it. If you love other Christians you will not do things that hurt them. Remember, Jesus Christ died for those people, so don’t eat that food. You know is good but leave it anyway. Then nobody will blame you.

¹⁷ We belong to God. He doesn’t give us rules about the things that we can’t eat or drink, but he wants us to have his spirit in us so that we do the things that are right, and we will always be calm and settled, and always be happy. If we live like this as we work for Jesus Christ, then we make God happy. And other people are happy with us too.

¹⁹ So we have to do everything we can to help each other. We have to try to agree with each other and to help each other get strong.

²⁰ God is getting all his people to come together into one mob, but if you eat something that upsets one of these new Christians so that they go away, you will mess up God’s work. So don’t do that. You know that there is nothing wrong with the food itself, but it is wrong for you to make another person to stop believing.

¹⁰ But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of Messiah.

¹¹ For it is written, “‘As I live,’ says the Lord, ‘to me every knee will bow. Every tongue will confess to God.’”

¹² So then each one of us will give account of himself to God.

¹³ Therefore let’s not judge one another any more, but judge this rather, that no man put a stumbling block in his brother’s way, or an occasion for falling.

¹⁴ I know and am persuaded in the Lord Yeshua that nothing is unclean of itself; except that to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean.

¹⁵ Yet if because of food your brother is grieved, you walk no longer in love. Don’t destroy with your food him for whom Messiah died.

¹⁶ Then don’t let your good be slandered,

¹⁷ for God’s Kingdom is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.

¹⁸ For he who serves Messiah in these things is acceptable to God and approved by men.

¹⁹ So then, let’s follow after things which make for peace, and things by which we may build one another up.

²⁰ Don’t overthrow God’s work for food’s sake. All things indeed are clean, however it is evil for that man who creates a stumbling block by eating.

⁴ Who are you who judge another’s servant? To his own lord he stands or falls. Yes, he will be made to stand, for God has power to make him stand.

⁵ One man esteems one day as more important. Another esteems every day alike. Let each man be fully assured in his own mind.

⁶ He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks. He who doesn’t eat, to the Lord he doesn’t eat, and gives God thanks.

⁷ For none of us lives to himself, and none dies to himself.

⁸ For if we live, we live to the Lord. Or if we die, we die to the Lord. If therefore we live or die, we are the Lord’s.

⁹ For to this end Messiah died, rose, and lived again, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

⁸ For whether we live, we live to the Lord; and whether we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore whether we live or die, we be of the Lord or we be Lord’s.

⁹ For why for this thing Christ was dead, and rose again, that he be Lord both of quick and of dead men or of quick and of dead.

¹⁰ But what deemest thou thy brother? or why despisest thou thy brother? for all we shall stand before the throne of Christ.

¹¹ For it is written, I live, saith the Lord, for to me each knee shall be bowed, and each tongue shall acknowledge to God.

¹² Therefore each of us shall yield reason to God for himself.

¹³ Therefore no more deem we each other; but more deem ye this thing, that ye put not hurting, or cause of stumbling, to a brother.

¹⁴ I know and trust in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean by him, no but to him that deemeth anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean.

¹⁵ And if thy brother be made sorry, or heavy, in conscience for meat, now thou walkest not after charity. Do not thou through thy meat lose him, for whom Christ died.

¹⁶ Therefore be not your good thing blasphemed or despised.

¹⁷ For why the realm of God is not meat and drink, but rightwiseness and peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.

¹⁸ And he that in this thing serveth Christ, pleaseth God, and is proved to men.

¹⁹ Therefore pursue we those things that be of peace, and keep we together those things that be of edification.

²⁰ Do not thou for meat lose the work of God. For all things be clean, but it is evil to the man that eateth by offending.

(And if thy brother be grieved in his conscience over food, now thou walkest not with love. Do not because of thy food, or by thy eating, destroy him for whom the Messiah died.)

¹⁸ And he that in this thing serveth Christ, pleaseth God, and is proved to men. (And he who doeth this serveth the Messiah, pleaseth God, and is approved by men.)

¹⁹ Therefore (pur)sue we those things that be of peace, and keep we together those things that be of edification. (And so follow those things that be about peace, and hold we together those things that be for our edification.)

²⁰ Do not thou for meat lose the work of God. For all things be clean, but it is evil to the man that eateth by offending. (Do not because of food, or by thy eating, destroy the work of God. For all things be clean, but it becometh evil to the man who, by his eating, causeth someone else to stumble.)

⁴ Thou — who art thou that art judging another's domestic? to his own master he doth stand or fall; and he shall be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand.

⁵ One doth judge one day above another, and another doth judge every day alike; let each in his own mind be fully assured.

⁶ He who is regarding the day, to the Lord he doth regard it, and he who is not regarding the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He who is eating, to the Lord he doth eat, for he doth give thanks to God; and he who is not eating, to the Lord he doth not eat, and doth give thanks to God.

⁷ For none of us to himself doth live, and none to himself doth die;

⁸ for both, if we may live, to the Lord we live; if also we may die, to the Lord we die; both then if we may live, also if we may die, we are the Lord's;

⁹ for because of this Christ both died and rose again, and lived again, that both of dead and of living he may be Lord.

¹⁰ And thou, why dost thou judge thy brother? or again, thou, why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand at the tribunal of the Christ;

¹¹ for it hath been written, 'I live! saith the Lord — to Me bow shall every knee, and every tongue shall confess to God;'

¹² so, then, each of us concerning himself shall give reckoning to God;

¹³ no longer, therefore, may we judge one another, but this judge ye rather, not to put a stumbling-stone before the brother, or an offence.

¹⁴ I have known, and am persuaded, in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean of itself, except to him who is reckoning anything to be unclean — to that one it is unclean;

¹⁵ and if through victuals thy brother is grieved, no more dost thou walk according to love; do not with thy victuals destroy that one for whom Christ died.

¹⁶ Let not, then, your good be evil spoken of,

¹⁷ for the reign of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit;

¹⁸ for he who in these things is serving the Christ, is acceptable to God and approved of men.

¹⁹ So, then, the things of peace may we pursue, and the things of building up one another;

²⁰ for the sake of victuals cast not down the work of God; all things, indeed, are pure, but evil is to the man who is eating through stumbling.
