Romans 11:2-20 in English

² God did not cast off his people which he foreknew. Or know ye not what the scripture saith of Elijah? how he pleadeth with God against Israel:

³ Lord, they have killed thy prophets, they have digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.

⁴ But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have left for myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to Baal.

⁵ Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

⁶ But if it is by grace, it is no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace.

⁷ What then? That which Israel seeketh for, that he obtained not; but the election obtained it, and the rest were hardened:

⁸ according as it is written, God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear, unto this very day.

⁹ And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, And a stumblingblock, and a recompense unto them:

¹⁰ Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, And bow thou down their back always.

¹¹ I say then, Did they stumble that they might fall? God forbid: but by their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, to provoke them to jealousy.

¹² Now if their fall is the riches of the world, and their loss the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness?

¹³ But I speak to you that are Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle of Gentiles, I glorify my ministry;

¹⁴ if by any means I may provoke to jealousy them that are my flesh, and may save some of them.

¹⁵ For if the casting away of them is the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?

¹⁶ And if the firstfruit is holy, so is the lump: and if the root is holy, so are the branches.

¹⁷ But if some of the branches were broken off, and thou, being a wild olive, wast grafted in among them, and didst become partaker with them of the root of the fatness of the olive tree;

¹⁸ glory not over the branches: but if thou gloriest, it is not thou that bearest the root, but the root thee.

¹⁹ Thou wilt say then, Branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in.

²⁰ Well; by their unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by thy faith. Be not highminded, but fear:

² God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying,

³ Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.

⁴ But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.

⁵ Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

⁶ And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

⁷ What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded

⁸ (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.

⁹ And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them:

¹⁰ Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway.

¹¹ I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.

¹² Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness?

¹³ For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:

¹⁴ If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them.

¹⁵ For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?

¹⁶ For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.

¹⁷ And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;

¹⁸ Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.

¹⁹ Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in.

²⁰ Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:

² No, God has not rejected his people, whom he chose long ago to be people whom he would bless in a special way. Remember RHQ what is written PRS in the Scriptures about Elijah when he mistakenly complained to God about the people of Israel, saying,

³ “Lord, they have killed the rest of your (sg) prophets, they have destroyed your altars. I am the only one who believes in you who remains alive, and now they are trying to kill me!”

⁴ God answered him like this: “ You(sg) are not the only one who believes in me! I have protected for myself not just you, but 7,000 other men who have not worshipped the false god Baal. ◄Remember that!/Do you not remember that?► RHQ”

⁵ So, similarly, there is also at this time a small group of us Jews who have become believers. God has chosen us to become believers (OR, his people) only because he acts kindly toward us, in ways that we do not deserve.

⁶ Since it is because he acts kindly toward those whom he chooses, it is not because they have done good things that he has chosen them. If God chose people because they did good deeds, then it would not be because he was acting toward them in a way that they did not deserve.

⁷ Since God chose only some people of Israel, this is what I conclude: RHQ Most of the people of Israel did not find the way for him to erase the record of their sins, even though some of them were earnestly looking for it. The people of Israel whom God had chosen found it, but the rest of them were { God} made spiritually insensitive/unresponsive.

⁸ Our fellow Jews are just like the ones about whom Isaiah wrote, God ◄caused their senses to be dull/made them unable to think clearly►. Up to this very day, they have eyes but they cannot see spiritually MET. They have ears, but they cannot understand spiritually what they hear.

⁹ And they remind me of what King David said, when he asked God to cause his enemies' senses to be dull MET, Make them stupid MTY, like animals that are caught in snares! May they feel secure because of the things that they enjoy but which will catch them like a trap DOU, MET, with the result that you will destroy them.

¹⁰ May their ability to perceive danger be dulled {Dull their ability to perceive spiritually} MET, with the result that they will not become alarmed MET when there is danger. May you cause them to carry heavy loads on their backs continually as slaves do MTY.

¹¹ Perhaps someone will ask, “ When the Jews sinned by not believing in Christ, did it result in their separating themselves from God permanently?” Then I would reply, No, they have certainly not separated themselves from God permanently!add*! What is happening is that because they sinned, God is saving non-Jews in order to cause the Jews to envy the way he blesses non-Jews and so ask Christ to save them.

¹² When the Jews sinned (OR, rejected Christ), the result was that God abundantly blessed other people in MTY the world by offering them the opportunity to believe. And when the Jews failed spiritually, the result was that God abundantly blessed the non-Jews. Since that is true, think how wonderful it will be when the complete number of the Jews whom God has chosen will believe in Christ RHQ!

¹³ Now it is to you non-Jews that I am saying what follows. I am the one who is the apostle to non-Jews, and I highly esteem this work that God appointed me to do.

¹⁴ But I also hope that by my labors I will make my fellow Jews ◄jealous/want what you non-Jews have►, with the result that some of them will believe and be saved.

¹⁵ God has rejected most of my fellow Jews because they refused to believe, with the result that he reconciled many other people in the world MTY to himself. But he will accept my fellow Jews again when they trust in Christ! And ◄this is what the result will be./do you know what the result will be?► RHQ It will be as though God is making them alive again after they have been dead!

¹⁶ Just like the whole lump of dough will belong to God if people offer to God MET the bread baked from the first part of it MET, so the Jews will belong to God because their ancestors belonged to God. And just like the branches of a tree will be good if the roots aregood MET, so the descendants of our great Jewish ancestors who belonged to God will also some day belong to God.

¹⁷ God has rejected many of the Jews MET, like branches of a tree are broken off { like people break off dead branches of a tree}. And each of you non-Jews whom God has accepted is like MET a branch of a wild/uncultivated olive tree that was { that someone} grafted among the branches (OR, onto one of the branches) that were left on a cultivated olive tree. God has caused you to benefit from how he blessed our(exc) first Jewish ancestors, as branches benefit from the nutritious sap from the roots of a cultivated olive tree MET.

¹⁸ However, you non-Jews must not despise the Jews whom God rejected MET, who are like the branches that were broken off from the tree If any of you wants to boast about having received blessings from God, remember this: Branches do not nourish the roots. Instead the roots nourish the branches MET. Similarly, you are blessed by God because of what you have received from the Jews! It is not what the Jews have received from you that blesses them MET!

¹⁹ If one of you then says, “ God rejected the Jews MET like branches MET that are broken {that people broke} off a tree and rejected, in order that he might accept us non-Jews, as branches MET of a tree are grafted in { as people graft in branches of a tree},”

²⁰ I would reply that this is true. However, it is because the Jews did not believe in Christ that they were rejected MET {that God rejected MET them}. As for you, it is only because you believe in Christ that God has accepted you! So do not any of you become proud, but instead beware of what could happen to you

² God has not put away the people of his selection. Or have you no knowledge of what is said about Elijah in the holy Writings? how he says words to God against Israel,

³ Lord, they have put your prophets to death, and made waste your altars, and now I am the last, and they are searching for me to take away my life.

⁴ But what answer does God make to him? I have still seven thousand men whose knees have not been bent to Baal.

⁵ In the same way, there are at this present time some who are marked out by the selection of grace.

⁶ But if it is of grace, then it is no longer of works: or grace would not be grace.

⁷ What then? That which Israel was searching for he did not get, but those of the selection got it and the rest were made hard.

⁸ As it was said in the holy Writings, God gave them a spirit of sleep, eyes which might not see, and ears which have no hearing, to this day.

⁹ And David says, Let their table be made a net for taking them, and a stone in their way, and a punishment:

¹⁰ Let their eyes be made dark so that they may not see, and let their back be bent down at all times.

¹¹ So I say, Were their steps made hard in order that they might have a fall? In no way: but by their fall salvation has come to the Gentiles, so that they might be moved to envy.

¹² Now, if their fall is the wealth of the world, and their loss the wealth of the Gentiles, how much greater will be the glory when they are made full?

¹³ But I say to you, Gentiles, in so far as I am the Apostle of the Gentiles, I make much of my position:

¹⁴ If in any way those who are of my flesh may be moved to envy, so that some of them may get salvation by me.

¹⁵ For, if by their putting away, the rest of men have been made friends with God, what will their coming back again be, but life from the dead?

¹⁶ And if the first-fruit is holy, so is the mass: and if the root is holy, so are the branches.

¹⁷ But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, an olive-tree of the fields, were put in among them, and were given a part with them in the root by which the olive-tree is made fertile,

¹⁸ Do not be uplifted in pride over the branches: because it is not you who are the support of the root, but it is by the root that you are supported.

¹⁹ You will say, Branches were broken off so that I might be put in.

²⁰ Truly, because they had no faith they were broken off, and you have your place by reason of your faith. Do not be lifted up in pride, but have fear;

² God has not cast away his people whom he foreknew. Know ye not what the scripture says in the history of Elias, how he pleads with God against Israel?

³ Lord, they have killed thy prophets, they have dug down thine altars; and I have been left alone, and they seek my life.

⁴ But what says the divine answer to him? I have left to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed knee to Baal.

⁵ Thus, then, in the present time also there has been a remnant according to election of grace.

⁶ But if by grace, no longer of works: since otherwise grace is no more grace.

⁷ What is it then? What Israel seeks for, that he has not obtained; but the election has obtained, and the rest have been blinded,

⁸ according as it is written, God has given to them a spirit of slumber, eyes not to see, and ears not to hear, unto this day.

⁹ And David says, Let their table be for a snare, and for a gin, and for a fall-trap, and for a recompense to them:

¹⁰ let their eyes be darkened not to see, and bow down their back alway.

¹¹ I say then, Have they stumbled in order that they might fall? Far be the thought: but by their fall there is salvation to the nations to provoke them to jealousy.

¹² But if their fall be the world's wealth, and their loss the wealth of the nations, how much rather their fulness?

¹³ For I speak to you, the nations, inasmuch as I am apostle of nations, I glorify my ministry;

¹⁴ if by any means I shall provoke to jealousy them which are my flesh, and shall save some from among them.

¹⁵ For if their casting away be the world's reconciliation, what their reception but life from among the dead?

¹⁶ Now if the first-fruit be holy, the lump also; and if the root be holy, the branches also.

¹⁷ Now if some of the branches have been broken out, and thou, being a wild olive tree, hast been grafted in amongst them, and hast become a fellow-partaker of the root and of the fatness of the olive tree,

¹⁸ boast not against the branches; but if thou boast, it is not thou bearest the root, but the root thee.

¹⁹ Thou wilt say then, The branches have been broken out in order that I might be grafted in.

²⁰ Right: they have been broken out through unbelief, and thou standest through faith. Be not high-minded, but fear:

² God hath not cast away his people, which he foreknew. Know you not what the scripture saith of Elias; how he calleth on God against Israel?

³ Lord, they have slain thy prophets, they have dug down thy altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.

⁴ But what saith the divine answer to him? I have left me seven thousand men, that have not bowed their knees to Baal.

¹⁴ If, by any means, I may provoke to emulation them who are my flesh, and may save some of them.

¹⁶ For if the firstfruit be holy, so is the lump also: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.

²⁰ Well: because of unbelief they were broken off. But thou standest by faith: be not highminded, but fear.

³ “Lord, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they are seeking my life”?

⁴ But what is God's reply to him? “I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”

⁵ So too then, at this present time, there is also a remnant according to the election of grace.

⁶ And if by grace, it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.

¹⁰ Let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever!”

¹¹ I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? By no means! But by their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles, to provoke them to jealousy.

¹² But if their transgression is riches for the world, and their defeat is riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their fullness be!

¹³ For I speak to you Gentiles; inasmuch as I am indeed an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry,

¹⁴ if somehow I may provoke to jealousy my fellow Jews, and thus save some of them.

¹⁵ For if their casting away means reconciliation for the world, what will their acceptance be, if not life from the dead?

¹⁶ For if the firstfruit is holy, so also the lump; and if the root is holy, so also the branches.

¹⁷ But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and became a partaker of the root and of the fatness of the olive tree,

¹⁸ do not be arrogant towards the branches. But if you are arrogant, remember that it is not you that supports the root, but the root supports you.

¹⁹ You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.”

²⁰ That is true. By unbelief they were broken off, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but fear.

² God has not rejected His people whom He foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says about Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel saying:

³ “Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to take my life!”

⁴ But what does the divine response say to him? “I have reserved for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”

⁵ Even so then at this present time, there is a remnant according to an election by grace.

⁶ Now if by grace, it is no longer from works; otherwise the grace is no longer grace. But if from works, it is no longer grace; otherwise the work is no longer work.

⁷ What then? What Israel is seeking, this it did not obtain; but the election did obtain it, while the rest were dulled.

⁸ Just as it is written: “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that were not to see and ears that were not to hear, to this very day.”

⁹ And David says: “Let their table be made into a snare and into a trap, into a stumbling block and into a retribution to them.

¹⁰ Let their eyes be darkened so as not to see, and their back always be bowed down.”

¹¹ So now I say, surely they have not stumbled so as to fall and stay fallen? Of course not! Rather, through their transgression the salvation has come to the Gentiles, to provoke them to jealousy.

¹² Now if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss riches for the nations, how much more their fulfillment!

¹³ So I am speaking to you Gentiles (inasmuch as I am ‘apostle to the Gentiles’, I magnify my ministry),

¹⁴ if somehow I can provoke my own people to jealousy and save some of them.

¹⁵ For if their being rejected means reconciliation for the world, what will their restoration be but life from the dead?

¹⁶ Now if the ‘firstfruit’ is holy, so is the whole batch; and if the root is holy, so are the branches.

¹⁷ Now if some of the branches were broken off, while you, being a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among them, and with them have become a partaker of the root and the rich sap of the cultivated olive,

¹⁸ do not boast against those branches (since if you do boast—it is not you who support the root but the root you).

¹⁹ You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.”

²⁰ Granted. Because of unbelief they were broken off, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but fear!

² God has not rejected his chosen people. Don't you recall what Scripture says about Elijah? How he complained about Israel to God, saying,

³ “Lord they've killed your prophets and destroyed your altars. I'm the only one left, and they're trying to kill me too!”

⁴ How did God answer him? “I still have seven thousand left who have not worshiped Baal.”

⁵ Today it's just the same: there are still some faithful people left, chosen by God's grace.

⁶ And since it's through grace, then clearly it's not based on what people do, otherwise grace wouldn't be grace!

⁷ So what do we conclude? That the people of Israel didn't achieve what they were striving for—only the chosen, while the rest became hard-hearted.

⁸ As Scripture says, “God dulled their minds so their eyes could not see and their ears could not hear, to this very day.”

⁹ David adds, “May their feasts become a trap for them, a net that catches them, a temptation that brings punishment.

¹⁰ May their eyes become blind so they cannot see, and may their backs always be bent low in dejection.”

¹¹ So am I saying that they stumbled and consequently failed completely? Not at all! But as a result of their mistakes, salvation came to other nations, to “make them jealous.”

¹² Now if even their failure benefits the world, and their loss profits the foreigners, how much more beneficial it would be if they were to completely fulfill what they were meant to be.

¹³ Now let me speak to you foreigners. Insofar as I'm a missionary to foreigners, I promote what I'm doing

¹⁴ that somehow I might make my people jealous and save some of them.

¹⁵ If the result of God's rejection of them is that the world becomes God's friends, the result of God's acceptance of them would be like the dead coming back to life!

¹⁶ If the first part of the bread dough given as an offering is holy, then so is all the rest; if the roots of a tree are holy, then so are the branches.

¹⁷ Now if some of the branches have been broken off, and you—a wild olive shoot—have been grafted in, and have shared with them the benefit of nourishment from the olive tree's roots,

¹⁸ then you shouldn't look down on the other branches. If you're tempted to boast, remember it's not you who are supporting the roots, but the roots that are supporting you.

¹⁹ You could make the claim, “Branches were broken off so I could be grafted in.”

²⁰ All well and good—but they were broken off because of their failure to trust in God, and you stay there because you trust in God. So don't think highly of yourselves, but be respectful,

² God hath not cast away his people which he knew before. Know ye not what the Scripture sayth of Elias, howe hee communeth with God against Israel, saying,

³ Lord, they haue killed thy Prophets, and digged downe thine altars: and I am left alone, and they seeke my life?

⁴ But what saith the answere of God to him? I haue reserued vnto my selfe seuen thousand men, which haue not bowed the knee to Baal.

¹⁹ Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be ingrafted.

²⁰ Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not high-minded, but fear:

² God didn’t reject his people, whom he foreknew. Or don’t you know what the Scripture says about Elijah? How he pleads with God against Israel:

³ “Lord, they have killed your prophets. They have broken down your altars. I am left alone, and they seek my life.”

⁴ But how does God answer him? “I have reserved for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”

⁵ Even so too at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

⁶ And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.

⁷ What then? That which Israel seeks for, that he didn’t obtain, but the chosen ones obtained it, and the rest were hardened.

⁸ According as it is written, “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear, to this very day.”

⁹ David says, “Let their table be made a snare, a trap, a stumbling block, and a retribution to them.

¹⁰ Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see. Always keep their backs bent.”

¹¹ I ask then, did they stumble that they might fall? May it never be! But by their fall salvation has come to the Gentiles, to provoke them to jealousy.

¹² Now if their fall is the riches of the world, and their loss the riches of the Gentiles, how much more their fullness!

¹³ For I speak to you who are Gentiles. Since then as I am an emissary to Gentiles, I glorify my ministry,

¹⁴ if by any means I may provoke to jealousy those who are my flesh, and may save some of them.

¹⁵ For if the rejection of them is the reconciling of the world, what would their acceptance be, but life from the dead?

¹⁶ If the first fruit is holy, so is the lump. If the root is holy, so are the branches.

¹⁷ But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them of the root and of the richness of the olive tree,

¹⁸ don’t boast over the branches. But if you boast, remember that it is not you who support the root, but the root supports you.

⁸ As it is written, God gave to them a spirit of compunction, eyes that they see not, and ears, that they hear not, into this day.

⁹ And David saith, Be the board of them made into a snare before them, and into catching, and into cause of stumbling, and into yielding again to them.

¹⁰ Be the eyes of them made dark, that they see not; and bow thou down always the back of them.

¹¹ Therefore I say, Whether they offended so, that they should fall down? God forbid. But by the guilt of them health is made to heathen men, that they pursue them.

¹² That if the guilt of them be riches of the world, and the making less or the diminishing of them be riches of heathen men, how much more the plenty of them?

¹³ But I say to you, heathen men, for as long as I am apostle of heathen men, I shall honour my ministry or my service,

¹⁴ if in any manner I stir my flesh for to follow, and that I make some of them safe.

¹⁵ For if the loss of them is the reconciling of the world, what is the taking up of them, but life of dead men? or but life to dead?

¹⁶ For if a little part of that that is tasted be holy, the whole gobbet is holy; and if the root is holy, also the branches.

¹⁷ What if any of the branches be broken, when thou were a wild olive tree, art grafted or art set in among them, and art made fellow of the root, and of the fatness of the olive tree,

¹⁸ do not thou have glory against the branches. For if thou gloriest, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.

¹⁹ Therefore thou sayest, The branches be broken, that I be grafted in or I be inset.

²⁰ Well, for unbelief the branches be broken; but thou standest by faith. Do not thou understand or savour high things, but dread thou,

² God hath not put away his people, which he before-knew. Whether ye know not, what the scripture saith in Elias? (or Do ye not know, what the Scripture saith in the story about Elijah?) How he prayeth God against Israel,

¹⁴ if in any manner I stir my flesh for to follow, and that I make some of them safe (or and that I save some of them).

¹⁵ For if the loss of them is the reconciling of the world, what is the taking up of them, but (the giving of) life of dead men? +or no but (the giving of) life to (the) dead? (or nothing less than the giving of life to the dead! or the giving of life from the dead!)

¹⁶ For if a little part of that that is tasted be holy, the whole gobbet is holy; and if the root is holy, also the branches.

¹⁷ What if any of the branches be broken, when thou were a wild olive tree, art grafted or art set in among them, and art made (a) fellow of the root, and of the fatness of the olive tree,

¹⁸ do not thou have glory (or boast) against the branches. For if thou gloriest (or For if thou boastest), thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.

¹⁹ Therefore thou sayest, The branches be broken, (so) that I be grafted in or so that I be inset.

²⁰ Well, for unbelief the branches be broken; but thou standest by faith. Do not thou understand or savour high things, but dread thou (them), (or fear them),

² God did not cast away His people whom He knew before; have ye not known — in Elijah — what the Writing saith? how he doth plead with God concerning Israel, saying,

³ 'Lord, Thy prophets they did kill, and Thy altars they dug down, and I was left alone, and they seek my life;'

⁴ but what saith the divine answer to him? 'I left to Myself seven thousand men, who did not bow a knee to Baal.'

⁵ So then also in the present time a remnant according to the choice of grace there hath been;

⁶ and if by grace, no more of works, otherwise the grace becometh no more grace; and if of works, it is no more grace, otherwise the work is no more work.

⁷ What then? What Israel doth seek after, this it did not obtain, and the chosen did obtain, and the rest were hardened,

⁸ according as it hath been written, 'God gave to them a spirit of deep sleep, eyes not to see, and ears not to hear,' — unto this very day,

⁹ and David saith, 'Let their table become for a snare, and for a trap, and for a stumbling-block, and for a recompense to them;

¹⁰ let their eyes be darkened — not to behold, and their back do Thou always bow down.'

¹¹ I say, then, Did they stumble that they might fall? let it not be! but by their fall the salvation is to the nations, to arouse them to jealousy;

¹² and if the fall of them is the riches of a world, and the diminution of them the riches of nations, how much more the fulness of them?

¹³ For to you I speak — to the nations — inasmuch as I am indeed an apostle of nations, my ministration I do glorify;

¹⁴ if by any means I shall arouse to jealousy mine own flesh, and shall save some of them,

¹⁵ for if the casting away of them is a reconciliation of the world, what the reception — if not life out of the dead?

¹⁶ and if the first-fruit is holy, the lump also; and if the root is holy, the branches also.

¹⁷ And if certain of the branches were broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wast graffed in among them, and a fellow-partaker of the root and of the fatness of the olive tree didst become —

¹⁸ do not boast against the branches; and if thou dost boast, thou dost not bear the root, but the root thee!

¹⁹ Thou wilt say, then, 'The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in;' right!

²⁰ by unbelief they were broken off, and thou hast stood by faith; be not high-minded, but be fearing;
