Romans 11:14-29 in English

¹⁴ if by any means I may provoke to jealousy them that are my flesh, and may save some of them.

¹⁵ For if the casting away of them is the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?

¹⁶ And if the firstfruit is holy, so is the lump: and if the root is holy, so are the branches.

¹⁷ But if some of the branches were broken off, and thou, being a wild olive, wast grafted in among them, and didst become partaker with them of the root of the fatness of the olive tree;

¹⁸ glory not over the branches: but if thou gloriest, it is not thou that bearest the root, but the root thee.

¹⁹ Thou wilt say then, Branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in.

²⁰ Well; by their unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by thy faith. Be not highminded, but fear:

²¹ for if God spared not the natural branches, neither will he spare thee.

²² Behold then the goodness and severity of God: toward them that fell, severity; but toward thee, God’s goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

²³ And they also, if they continue not in their unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again.

²⁴ For if thou wast cut out of that which is by nature a wild olive tree, and wast grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree; how much more shall these, which are the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?

²⁵ For I would not, brethren, have you ignorant of this mystery, lest ye be wise in your own conceits, that a hardening in part hath befallen Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in;

²⁶ and so all Israel shall be saved: even as it is written, There shall come out of Zion the Deliverer; He shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:

²⁷ And this is my covenant unto them, When I shall take away their sins.

²⁸ As touching the gospel, they are enemies for your sake: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sake.

²⁹ For the gifts and the calling of God are not repented of.

¹⁴ If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them.

¹⁵ For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?

²⁵ For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

²⁶ And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:

²⁷ For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.

²⁸ As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes.

¹⁴ But I also hope that by my labors I will make my fellow Jews ◄jealous/want what you non-Jews have►, with the result that some of them will believe and be saved.

¹⁵ God has rejected most of my fellow Jews because they refused to believe, with the result that he reconciled many other people in the world MTY to himself. But he will accept my fellow Jews again when they trust in Christ! And ◄this is what the result will be./do you know what the result will be?► RHQ It will be as though God is making them alive again after they have been dead!

¹⁶ Just like the whole lump of dough will belong to God if people offer to God MET the bread baked from the first part of it MET, so the Jews will belong to God because their ancestors belonged to God. And just like the branches of a tree will be good if the roots aregood MET, so the descendants of our great Jewish ancestors who belonged to God will also some day belong to God.

¹⁷ God has rejected many of the Jews MET, like branches of a tree are broken off { like people break off dead branches of a tree}. And each of you non-Jews whom God has accepted is like MET a branch of a wild/uncultivated olive tree that was { that someone} grafted among the branches (OR, onto one of the branches) that were left on a cultivated olive tree. God has caused you to benefit from how he blessed our(exc) first Jewish ancestors, as branches benefit from the nutritious sap from the roots of a cultivated olive tree MET.

¹⁸ However, you non-Jews must not despise the Jews whom God rejected MET, who are like the branches that were broken off from the tree If any of you wants to boast about having received blessings from God, remember this: Branches do not nourish the roots. Instead the roots nourish the branches MET. Similarly, you are blessed by God because of what you have received from the Jews! It is not what the Jews have received from you that blesses them MET!

¹⁹ If one of you then says, “ God rejected the Jews MET like branches MET that are broken {that people broke} off a tree and rejected, in order that he might accept us non-Jews, as branches MET of a tree are grafted in { as people graft in branches of a tree},”

²⁰ I would reply that this is true. However, it is because the Jews did not believe in Christ that they were rejected MET {that God rejected MET them}. As for you, it is only because you believe in Christ that God has accepted you! So do not any of you become proud, but instead beware of what could happen to you

²¹ Since God did not spare the unbelieving Jews MET who were like a tree's natural branches, he will not spare any of you if you do not keep trusting in him!

²² Note then, that God acts kindly, but he also acts severely. He has acted severely toward the Jews who have stopped trusting in him. On the other hand, he acts kindly toward each of you non-Jews only if you continue to appreciate his acting kindly toward you. However, you will be rejected { he will reject you} if you do not keep trusting in him.

²³ And if the Jews believe in Christ LIT, God also will reunite them to himself as branches are grafted { as people graft branches} into a tree again, because God is able to do that.

²⁴ Each of you non-Jews who were previously separated from God has benefited from the ways in which God blessed the Jews MET. That is like taking branches that have been cut {that someone has cut} from a wild olive tree that just grew without being planted { someone planting it} and, contrary to what people usually do, grafting them into a cultivated olive tree. So God will much more readily receive back the Jews because they belonged to him before MET! That will be like the original branches that had been cut off being grafted {like grafting the original branches that someone cut off,} back into the olive tree to which they originally belonged!

²⁵ My non-Jewish fellow believers, I certainly want you to understand LIT this truth that God has now revealed about my fellow Jews who are refusing to believe. You should not proudly think that God now favors you more than the Jews (OR, that you understand God's further plans for the Jews). Many people of Israel will continue to be stubborn until all the non-Jews whom God has chosen have believed in Jesus.

²⁶ And then all HYP the people of Israel will be saved { God will save all HYP the people of Israel}. Then these words that are written {that a prophet wrote} in the Scriptures will ◄ become true/be fulfilled►: The one who sets his people free will originate from the place where God dwells (OR, from the Jews) MTY. Then he will remove the guilt of the Israelite people (OR, descendants of Jacob) MTY.

²⁷ And as God says, The contract that I will make with them is that I will forgive their sins.

²⁸ With regard to the Jews rejecting the good message about Christ, God treats them as enemies, which has benefited you non-Jews. But in regard to their being the people whom God chose, God still loves them because of what he promised their ancestors.

²⁹ He still loves them, because he never changed his mind about the privileges/blessings he gave to them and about his choosing them to be his people.

¹⁴ if by any means I may provoke to jealousy those who are my flesh, and may save some of them.

¹⁵ For if the rejection of them is the reconciling of the world, what would their acceptance be, but life from the dead?

¹⁶ If the first fruit is holy, so is the lump. If the root is holy, so are the branches.

¹⁷ But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them of the root and of the richness of the olive tree,

¹⁸ don’t boast over the branches. But if you boast, remember that it is not you who support the root, but the root supports you.

¹⁹ You will say then, “Branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in.”

²⁰ True; by their unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by your faith. Don’t be conceited, but fear;

²¹ for if God didn’t spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you.

²² See then the goodness and severity of God. Toward those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in his goodness; otherwise you also will be cut off.

¹⁴ If in any way those who are of my flesh may be moved to envy, so that some of them may get salvation by me.

¹⁵ For, if by their putting away, the rest of men have been made friends with God, what will their coming back again be, but life from the dead?

¹⁶ And if the first-fruit is holy, so is the mass: and if the root is holy, so are the branches.

¹⁷ But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, an olive-tree of the fields, were put in among them, and were given a part with them in the root by which the olive-tree is made fertile,

¹⁸ Do not be uplifted in pride over the branches: because it is not you who are the support of the root, but it is by the root that you are supported.

¹⁹ You will say, Branches were broken off so that I might be put in.

²⁰ Truly, because they had no faith they were broken off, and you have your place by reason of your faith. Do not be lifted up in pride, but have fear;

²¹ For, if God did not have mercy on the natural branches, he will not have mercy on you.

²² See then that God is good but his rules are fixed: to those who were put away he was hard, but to you he has been good, on the condition that you keep in his mercy; if not, you will be cut off as they were.

²³ And they, if they do not go on without faith, will be united to the tree again, because God is able to put them in again.

²⁴ For if you were cut out of a field olive-tree, and against the natural use were united to a good olive-tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be united again with the olive-tree which was theirs?

²⁵ For it is my desire, brothers, that this secret may be clear to you, so that you may not have pride in your knowledge, that Israel has been made hard in part, till all the Gentiles have come in;

²⁶ And so all Israel will get salvation: as it is said in the holy Writings, There will come out of Zion the One who makes free; by him wrongdoing will be taken away from Jacob:

²⁷ And this is my agreement with them, when I will take away their sins.

²⁸ As far as the good news is in question, they are cut off from God on account of you, but as far as the selection is in question, they are loved on account of the fathers.

²⁹ Because God's selection and his mercies may not be changed.

¹⁴ if by any means I shall provoke to jealousy them which are my flesh, and shall save some from among them.

¹⁵ For if their casting away be the world's reconciliation, what their reception but life from among the dead?

¹⁶ Now if the first-fruit be holy, the lump also; and if the root be holy, the branches also.

¹⁷ Now if some of the branches have been broken out, and thou, being a wild olive tree, hast been grafted in amongst them, and hast become a fellow-partaker of the root and of the fatness of the olive tree,

¹⁸ boast not against the branches; but if thou boast, it is not thou bearest the root, but the root thee.

¹⁹ Thou wilt say then, The branches have been broken out in order that I might be grafted in.

²⁰ Right: they have been broken out through unbelief, and thou standest through faith. Be not high-minded, but fear:

²¹ if God indeed has not spared the natural branches; lest it might be he spare not thee either.

²² Behold then the goodness and severity of God: upon them who have fallen, severity; upon thee goodness of God, if thou shalt abide in goodness, since otherwise thou also wilt be cut away.

²³ And they too, if they abide not in unbelief, shall be grafted in; for God is able again to graft them in.

²⁴ For if thou hast been cut out of the olive tree wild by nature, and, contrary to nature, hast been grafted into the good olive tree, how much rather shall they, who are according to nature be grafted into their own olive tree?

²⁵ For I do not wish you to be ignorant, brethren, of this mystery, that ye may not be wise in your own conceits, that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the nations be come in;

²⁶ and so all Israel shall be saved. According as it is written, The deliverer shall come out of Zion; he shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob.

²⁷ And this is the covenant from me to them, when I shall have taken away their sins.

²⁸ As regards the glad tidings, they are enemies on your account; but as regards election, beloved on account of the fathers.

²⁹ For the gifts and the calling of God are not subject to repentance.

¹⁴ If, by any means, I may provoke to emulation them who are my flesh, and may save some of them.

¹⁵ For if the loss of them be the reconciliation of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?

²¹ For if God did not spare the natural branches, perhaps He may not spare you either.

²² Behold then the kindness and severity of God: upon those that fell, severity; but upon you, kindness, if you continue in His kindness. Otherwise you also shall be cut off.

²³ And they also, if they do not remain in unbelief, shall be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.

²⁴ For if you were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more shall these, the natural ones, be grafted into their own olive tree?

²⁵ For I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers, lest you be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.

²⁶ And so all Israel shall be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer shall come out of Zion, and He shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob;

²⁷ For this is My covenant with them, when I take away their sins.”

²⁸ As regards to the gospel, they are enemies for your sake; but as regards to election, they are beloved for the sake of the fathers.

¹⁴ if somehow I can provoke my own people to jealousy and save some of them.

¹⁵ For if their being rejected means reconciliation for the world, what will their restoration be but life from the dead?

¹⁶ Now if the ‘firstfruit’ is holy, so is the whole batch; and if the root is holy, so are the branches.

¹⁷ Now if some of the branches were broken off, while you, being a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among them, and with them have become a partaker of the root and the rich sap of the cultivated olive,

¹⁸ do not boast against those branches (since if you do boast—it is not you who support the root but the root you).

¹⁹ You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.”

²⁰ Granted. Because of unbelief they were broken off, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but fear!

²¹ Because if God did not spare the natural branches, perhaps He will not spare you either!

²² So consider the kindness and severity of God: upon those who fell, severity; but toward you, kindness, if you continue in that kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off.

²³ And even they, if they do not persist in the unbelief, will be grafted back in, because God has the power to graft them in again.

²⁴ For if you were cut out of a wild by nature olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?

²⁵ Brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant of this ‘mystery’ (so that you not be conceited): hardening has come upon Israel in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.

²⁶ And so all Israel will be saved, just as it is written: “The Deliverer will come out of Zion, and He will turn ungodliness away from Jacob;

²⁷ this is my covenant with them, when I take away their sins.”

²⁸ On the one hand, regarding the Gospel, they are enemies because of you; on the other, regarding the election, they are beloved on account of the forefathers.

²⁹ Because God's gracious gifts and calling are irrevocable.

¹⁴ that somehow I might make my people jealous and save some of them.

¹⁵ If the result of God's rejection of them is that the world becomes God's friends, the result of God's acceptance of them would be like the dead coming back to life!

¹⁶ If the first part of the bread dough given as an offering is holy, then so is all the rest; if the roots of a tree are holy, then so are the branches.

¹⁷ Now if some of the branches have been broken off, and you—a wild olive shoot—have been grafted in, and have shared with them the benefit of nourishment from the olive tree's roots,

¹⁸ then you shouldn't look down on the other branches. If you're tempted to boast, remember it's not you who are supporting the roots, but the roots that are supporting you.

¹⁹ You could make the claim, “Branches were broken off so I could be grafted in.”

²⁰ All well and good—but they were broken off because of their failure to trust in God, and you stay there because you trust in God. So don't think highly of yourselves, but be respectful,

²¹ because if God didn't spare the original branches, he won't spare you either.

²² You should recognize both God's kindness and toughness—he was tough on the fallen, but God is kind to you so long as you trust in his kindness—otherwise you'll be removed too.

²³ If they no longer refuse to trust in God, they can be grafted in as well, for God is able to graft them back in again.

²⁴ If you could be cut from a wild olive tree, and then be grafted artificially onto a cultivated olive tree, how much more easily they could be grafted back naturally to their own tree.

²⁵ I don't want you, my brothers and sisters to miss this previously-hidden truth, for otherwise you could become conceited. The people of Israel have become hard-hearted in part, until the process of the foreigners coming in is complete.

²⁶ This is how all Israel will be saved. As Scripture says, “The Savior will come from Zion, and he will turn Jacob away from his opposition to God.

²⁷ My promise to them is that I'll take away their sins.”

²⁸ Though they are enemies of the good news—and this is to your benefit—they are still the chosen people, and loved because of their forefathers.

²⁹ God's gifts and his calling can't be withdrawn.

¹⁴ To trie if by any meanes I might prouoke them of my flesh to follow them, and might saue some of them.

¹⁵ For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiuing be, but life from the dead?

¹⁶ For if the first fruites be holy, so is the whole lumpe: and if the roote be holy, so are the branches.

¹⁷ And though some of the branches be broken off, and thou being a wilde Oliue tree, wast graft in for them, and made partaker of the roote, and fatnesse of the Oliue tree.

¹⁸ Boast not thy selfe against the branches: and if thou boast thy selfe, thou bearest not the roote, but the roote thee.

¹⁹ Thou wilt say then, The branches are broken off, that I might be graft in.

²⁰ Well: through vnbeliefe they are broken off, and thou standest by faith: bee not hie minded, but feare.

²¹ For if God spared not the naturall branches, take heede, least he also spare not thee.

¹⁵ For, if their being cast aside has meant the reconciliation of the world, what will their reception mean, but life from the dead?

¹⁶ If the first handful of dough in holy, so is the whole mass; and if the root is holy, so are the branches.

¹⁷ Some, however, of the branches were broken off, and you, who were only a wild olive, were grafted in amongst them, and came to share with them the root which is the source of the richness of the cultivated olive.

²² Look at, then, the kind actions and the severity of God: severity came on the Jews who fell, but God's kindness comes on you, if you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.

²³ And even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in. For God is able to graft them in again.

²⁴ For if you were cut out of what is by nature a wild olive tree, and contrary to nature were grafted into a good olive tree, how much more will these Jews, who are the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree?

¹⁷ What if any of the branches be broken, when thou were a wild olive tree, art grafted or art set in among them, and art made fellow of the root, and of the fatness of the olive tree,

¹⁸ do not thou have glory against the branches. For if thou gloriest, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.

¹⁹ Therefore thou sayest, The branches be broken, that I be grafted in or I be inset.

²⁰ Well, for unbelief the branches be broken; but thou standest by faith. Do not thou understand or savour high things, but dread thou,

²¹ for if God spared not the kindly branches, see thou lest peradventure he spare not thee.

²² Therefore see the goodness, and the fierceness of God; yea, the fierceness into them that fell down, but the goodness of God into thee, if thou dwellest in goodness, else also thou shalt be cut down.

²³ Yea, and they shall be set in or shall be inset, if they dwell not in unbelief. For God is mighty, to set them in again.

²⁴ For if thou art cut down of the kindly wild olive tree, and against kind art set into a good olive tree, how much more they that be by kind, shall be set in their olive tree?

²⁵ But, brethren, I will not, that ye not know this mystery, that ye be not wise to yourselves; for blindness hath fallen a part in Israel, till that the plenty of heathen men entered,

²⁶ and so all Israel should be made safe. As it is written, He shall come of Zion, that shall deliver, and turn away the wickedness or unpiety of Jacob.

²⁷ And this testament to them of me, when I shall do away their sins.

²⁹ And the gifts and the calling of God be without repenting, or revoking.

¹⁶ For if a little part of that that is tasted be holy, the whole gobbet is holy; and if the root is holy, also the branches.

¹⁷ What if any of the branches be broken, when thou were a wild olive tree, art grafted or art set in among them, and art made (a) fellow of the root, and of the fatness of the olive tree,

¹⁸ do not thou have glory (or boast) against the branches. For if thou gloriest (or For if thou boastest), thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.

¹⁹ Therefore thou sayest, The branches be broken, (so) that I be grafted in or so that I be inset.

²⁰ Well, for unbelief the branches be broken; but thou standest by faith. Do not thou understand or savour high things, but dread thou (them), (or fear them),

²¹ for if God spared not the kindly branches (or for if God did not spare the natural branches), see thou lest peradventure he spare not thee.

²² Therefore see the goodness, and the fierceness of God; yea, the fierceness into them that fell down, but the goodness of God into thee, if thou dwellest in goodness, else also thou shalt be cut down.

²³ Yea, and they shall be set in or they shall be inset, if they dwell not in unbelief. For God is mighty, to set them in again.

²⁴ For if thou art cut down of the kindly wild olive tree, and against kind art set into a good olive tree, how much more they that be by kind, shall be set in their olive tree? (For if thou art cut down from the naturally wild olive tree, and against nature art grafted into a good or a cultivated olive tree, how much more then they who be of that very nature, shall be able to be grafted into their olive tree?)

²⁵ But, brethren, I will not, that ye not know this mystery, that ye be not wise to yourselves; for blindness hath fallen a part in Israel, till that the plenty of heathen men entered, (But, brothers, I do not desire, that ye do not know this mystery, so that ye do not think yourselves to be wise; for blindness hath fallen in part upon Israel, until the multitude of the Gentiles have entered,)

²⁶ and so all Israel should be made safe. As it is written, He shall come of Sion, that shall deliver, and turn away the wickedness or the unpiety of Jacob. (and so all Israel shall be saved. As it is written, He shall come from Zion, who shall deliver them, and shall take away wickedness or impiety from Jacob.)

²⁷ And this testament to them of me (or And this is my covenant with them), when I shall do away their sins.

²⁸ After the gospel they be enemies for you, but they be most dearworthy by the election or after the election for the fathers.

²⁹ And the gifts and the calling of God be without forthinking, (or repenting), or revoking.

¹⁴ if by any means I shall arouse to jealousy mine own flesh, and shall save some of them,

¹⁵ for if the casting away of them is a reconciliation of the world, what the reception — if not life out of the dead?

¹⁶ and if the first-fruit is holy, the lump also; and if the root is holy, the branches also.

¹⁷ And if certain of the branches were broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wast graffed in among them, and a fellow-partaker of the root and of the fatness of the olive tree didst become —

¹⁸ do not boast against the branches; and if thou dost boast, thou dost not bear the root, but the root thee!

¹⁹ Thou wilt say, then, 'The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in;' right!

²⁰ by unbelief they were broken off, and thou hast stood by faith; be not high-minded, but be fearing;

²¹ for if God the natural branches did not spare — lest perhaps He also shall not spare thee.

²² Lo, then, goodness and severity of God — upon those indeed who fell, severity; and upon thee, goodness, if thou mayest remain in the goodness, otherwise, thou also shalt be cut off.

²³ And those also, if they may not remain in unbelief, shall be graffed in, for God is able again to graff them in;

²⁴ for if thou, out of the olive tree, wild by nature, wast cut out, and, contrary to nature, wast graffed into a good olive tree, how much rather shall they, who are according to nature, be graffed into their own olive tree?

²⁵ For I do not wish you to be ignorant, brethren, of this secret — that ye may not be wise in your own conceits — that hardness in part to Israel hath happened till the fulness of the nations may come in;

²⁶ and so all Israel shall be saved, according as it hath been written, 'There shall come forth out of Sion he who is delivering, and he shall turn away impiety from Jacob,

²⁷ and this to them is the covenant from Me, when I may take away their sins.'

²⁸ As regards, indeed, the good tidings, they are enemies on your account; and as regards the choice — beloved on account of the fathers;

²⁹ for unrepented of are the gifts and the calling of God;
