¹⁵ If I had said, I will speak thus; Behold, I had dealt treacherously with the generation of thy children.

¹⁶ When I thought how I might know this, It was too painful for me;

¹⁷ Until I went into the sanctuary of God, And considered their latter end.

¹⁸ Surely thou settest them in slippery places: Thou castest them down to destruction.

¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors.

²⁰ As a dream when one awaketh, So, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou wilt despise their image.

²¹ For my soul was grieved, And I was pricked in my heart:

²² So brutish was I, and ignorant; I was as a beast before thee.

²³ Nevertheless I am continually with thee: Thou hast holden my right hand.

²⁴ Thou wilt guide me with thy counsel, And afterward receive me to glory.

²⁵ Whom have I in heaven but thee? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides thee.

²⁶ My flesh and my heart faileth; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever.

²⁷ For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: Thou hast destroyed all them that play the harlot, departing from thee.

¹⁵ Thou didst cleave fountains and torrents; thou driedst up mighty rivers.

¹⁶ The day is thine, and the night is thine; thou hast prepared the sun and the moon.

¹⁷ Thou hast made all the borders of the earth; thou hast made summer and spring.

¹⁸ Remember this thy creation: an enemy has reproached the Lord, and a foolish people has provoked thy name.

¹⁹ Deliver not to the wild beasts a soul that gives praise to thee: forget not for ever the souls of thy poor.

²⁰ Look upon thy covenant: for the dark places of the earth are filled with the habitations of iniquity.

²¹ Let not the afflicted and shamed one be rejected: the poor and needy shall praise thy name.

²² Arise, O God, plead thy cause: remember thy reproaches that come from the foolish one all the day.

²³ Forget not the voice of thy suppliants: let the pride of them that hate thee continually ascend before thee.

¹⁷ But when I went to your temple, you spoke to me, and I understood what will happen to the wicked people after they die.

¹⁸ Now I know that you will surely put them in slippery places, and they will fall down and die.

¹⁹ They will be destroyed instantly; they will die in terrible ways.

²⁰ They will disappear as quickly as a dream disappears when a person awakes in the morning; Lord, when you arise, you will ◄cause them to disappear/forget all about them►.

²¹ When I felt sad/bitter , and brokenhearted,

²² I was stupid and ignorant, and I behaved like an animal toward you.

²³ But I am always close to you, and you hold my hand.

²⁴ You guide me by teaching me, and ◄at the end of my life/when I die►, you will receive me and honor me.

²⁵ You are in heaven and I belong to you RHQ, and there is nothing on this earth that I desire more than that.

²⁶ My body and my mind may become very weak, but God, you continue to enable me to be strong; I belong to you forever.

²⁷ Those who remain far from you will be destroyed; you will get rid of those who abandon you.

¹⁸ You put their feet where there was danger of slipping, so that they go down into destruction.

¹⁹ How suddenly are they wasted! fears are the cause of their destruction.

²⁰ As a dream when one is awake, they are ended; they are like an image gone out of mind when sleep is over.

²¹ My heart was made bitter, and I was pained by the bite of grief:

²² As for me, I was foolish, and without knowledge; I was like a beast before you.

²³ But still I am ever with you; you have taken me by my right hand.

²⁴ Your wisdom will be my guide, and later you will put me in a place of honour.

²⁵ Whom have I in heaven but you? and having you I have no desire for anything on earth.

²⁶ My flesh and my heart are wasting away: but God is the Rock of my heart and my eternal heritage.

²⁷ For those who are far away from you will come to destruction: you will put an end to all those who have not kept faith with you.

¹⁶ When I thought to be able to know this, it was a grievous task in mine eyes;

¹⁷ Until I went into the sanctuaries of God; then understood I their end.

¹⁹ How are they suddenly made desolate! they pass away, consumed with terrors.

²⁰ As a dream, when one awaketh, wilt thou, Lord, on arising despise their image.

²¹ When my heart was in a ferment, and I was pricked in my reins,

²² Then I was brutish and knew nothing; I was as a beast with thee.

¹⁶ Thine is the day, and thine is the night: thou hast made the morning light and the sun.

¹⁷ Thou hast made all the borders of the earth: the summer and the spring were formed by thee.

¹⁸ Remember this, the enemy hath reproached the Lord: and a foolish people hath provoked thy name.

¹⁹ Deliver not up to beasts the souls that confess to thee: and forget not to the end the souls of thy poor.

²⁰ Have regard to thy covenant: for they that are the obscure of the earth have been filled with dwellings of iniquity.

²¹ Let not the humble be turned away with confusion: the poor and needy shall praise thy name.

²² Arise, O God, judge thy own cause: remember thy reproaches with which the foolish man hath reproached thee all the day.

²³ Forget not the voices of thy enemies: the pride of them that hate thee ascendeth continually.

¹⁵ If I'd talked like this to others, I would have betrayed your people.

¹⁶ So I thought about it and tried to understand, but it looked like a lot of hard work to me—

¹⁷ until I went into God's Temple. Then I understood what happens to the wicked in the end.

¹⁸ For you send them on a slippery path; you throw them down to destruction.

¹⁹ How quickly they're destroyed! They come to a terrifying end.

²⁰ Like waking up from a dream, Lord—when you get up you will forget all about them!

²¹ At that time my thoughts were bitter. I felt like I had been stabbed.

²² I was stupid and ignorant. I was like a brute beast to you.

²³ Yet I'm always with you; you hold me by the hand.

²⁴ You tell me what to do; and ultimately you will welcome me in glory.

²⁵ Who is there in heaven for me except you? And I want nothing on earth except you.

²⁶ My body and my mind may fail, but God is the foundation of my life. He is mine forever!

²⁷ Those people who are far from God will die. You destroy all those unfaithful to you.

¹⁵ If I say, I will iudge thus, beholde the generation of thy children: I haue trespassed.

¹⁶ Then thought I to know this, but it was too painefull for me,

¹⁷ Vntill I went into the Sanctuarie of God: then vnderstoode I their ende.

¹⁸ Surely thou hast set them in slipperie places, and castest them downe into desolation.

¹⁹ How suddenly are they destroyed, perished and horribly consumed,

²⁰ As a dreame when one awaketh! O Lord, when thou raisest vs vp, thou shalt make their image despised.

²² But I was indeed foolish, and I knew it not: I was as a thoughtless beast with thee.

²³ Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast seized hold of me by my right hand.

²⁴ With thy counsel wilt thou guide me, and afterward take me on to glory.

²⁵ Whom have I in heaven? and beside thee I desire nothing upon earth.

²⁵ Whom have I in heaven but thee, And whom on earth do I love in comparison with thee?

²⁷ For, lo! they who are far from thee perish; Thou destroyest all who estrange themselves from thee.

¹⁵ But to resolve to speak like they do would be treachery to your children.

¹⁸ Yes, you set them on slippery places; down to destruction you hurl them.

¹⁹ One moment and then what a horror of ruin! They are finished and ended in terrors.

²¹ So my bitterness of mind and the pain that stabbed my heart

²² show how dull I was and stupid just like a beast before you.

²³ But I am always with you, you have hold of my right hand.

¹⁹ How they are suddenly destroyed! They are completely swept away with terrors.

²⁰ As a dream when one wakes up, so, Lord, when you awake, you will despise their fantasies.

²¹ For my soul was grieved. I was embittered in my heart.

²² I was so senseless and ignorant. I was a brute beast before you.

²³ Nevertheless, I am continually with you. You have held my right hand.

²⁴ You will guide me with your counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.

²⁰ As the dream of men that rise; Lord, thou shalt drive their image to nought, in thy city.

²¹ For mine heart is enflamed, and my reins be changed;

²² and I am driven to nought, and I knew not. As a work beast I am made with thee;

²³ and I am ever with thee. Thou heldest my right hand,

²⁴ and in thy will thou leddest me forth; and with glory thou tookest me up.

²⁵ For why what is to me in heaven; and what would or desire I of thee on earth?

²⁷ For lo! they that draw away far themselves from thee shall perish; thou hast lost all men that do forni-cation from thee.

¹⁵ If I said, I shall tell thus; lo! I have reproved the nation of thy sons. (If I had said, I shall talk as they do; behold! I would have brought reproach upon the nation of thy children.)

¹⁶ I guessed, that I should know this; (but too much) travail is before me. (I tried to work through all of this; but it was too much for me.)

¹⁷ Till I enter into the saintuary of God; and understand in the last things of them. (Until I entered into the sanctuary of God; and there I understood their last things, that is, their end.)

¹⁸ Nevertheless for guiles thou hast put to them; thou castedest them down, while they were raised. (For thou shalt put them in slippery places; thou shalt throw them down, after they be raised up.)

¹⁹ How be they made into desolation; they failed suddenly, they perished for their wickedness/for their waywardness. (How they shall go into desolation! they shall suddenly fail, and they shall perish for all their wickedness or for all their wayward ways.)

²⁰ As the dream of men that (a)rise; Lord, thou shalt drive their image to nought, in thy city. (Like a dream when one awaketh, and it vanisheth; so, Lord, thou shalt drive them down into nothing or until they completely disappear.)

²¹ For mine heart is enflamed, and my reins be changed; (When my heart was enflamed, and my feelings were hurt;)

²² and I am driven to nought, and I knew not. As a work beast I am made with thee; (and I was driven down into nothing, and I knew nothing; yea, I was made like a work beast before thee;)

²³ and I am ever with thee. Thou heldest my right hand, (but still I am ever with thee. Thou holdest my right hand,)

²⁴ and in thy will thou leddest me forth; and with glory thou tookest me up. (and by thy counsel, or thy instruction, thou leadest me forth; and afterward thou shalt receive me with honour.)

²⁵ For why what is to me in heaven; and what would I of thee on earth? (For what is there for me in heaven, but thee? and what else do I desire here on earth, but thee?)

²⁶ My flesh and mine heart failed; God of mine heart, and my part is God into without end. (Though my flesh and my heart fail; but God is my strength, and my portion forever.)

²⁷ For lo! they that draw away far themselves from thee shall perish; thou hast lost all men that do fornication from thee. (For behold! they who take themselves far away from thee, shall perish; thou shalt destroy all those who wantonly abandon thee.)

¹⁵ If I have said, 'I recount thus,' Lo, a generation of Thy sons I have deceived.

¹⁶ And I think to know this, Perverseness it is in mine eyes,

¹⁷ Till I come in to the sanctuaries of God, I attend to their latter end.

¹⁸ Only, in slippery places Thou dost set them, Thou hast caused them to fall to desolations.

¹⁹ How have they become a desolation as in a moment, They have been ended — consumed from terrors.

²⁰ As a dream from awakening, O Lord, In awaking, their image Thou despisest.

²¹ For my heart doth show itself violent, And my reins prick themselves,

²² And I am brutish, and do not know. A beast I have been with Thee.

²³ And I am continually with Thee, Thou hast laid hold on my right hand.

²⁴ With Thy counsel Thou dost lead me, And after honour dost receive me.

²⁵ Whom have I in the heavens? And with Thee none I have desired in earth.

²⁶ Consumed hath been my flesh and my heart, The rock of my heart and my portion is God to the age.

²⁷ For, lo, those far from Thee do perish, Thou hast cut off every one, Who is going a whoring from Thee.
