¹⁷ He that passeth by, and vexeth himself with strife belonging not to him, Is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.

¹⁸ As a madman who casteth firebrands, Arrows, and death,

¹⁹ So is the man that deceiveth his neighbor, And saith, Am not I in sport?

²⁰ For lack of wood the fire goeth out; And where there is no whisperer, contention ceaseth.

²¹ As coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire, So is a contentious man to inflame strife.

²² The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, And they go down into the innermost parts.

²³ Fervent lips and a wicked heart Are like an earthen vessel overlaid with silver dross.

²⁴ He that hateth dissembleth with his lips; But he layeth up deceit within him:

¹⁷ As he that lays hold of a dog's tail, so is he that makes himself the champion of another's cause.

¹⁸ As those who need correction put forth fair words to men, and he that first falls in with the proposal will be overthrown;

¹⁹ so are all that lay wait for their own friends, and when they are discovered, say, I did it in jest.

²⁰ With much wood fire increases; but where there is not a double-minded man, strife ceases.

²¹ A hearth for coals, and wood for fire; and a railing man for the tumult of strife.

²² The words of cunning knaves are soft; but they smite even to the inmost parts of the bowels.

²³ Silver dishonestly given is to be considered as a potsherd: smooth lips cover a grievous heart.

²⁴ A weeping enemy promises all things with his lips, but in his heart he contrives deceit.

¹⁸ Crazy people who shoot burning arrows to kill people

¹⁹ are as foolish as those who deceive someone else and then say, “I was only joking.”

²⁰ If there is no more firewood to put on the fire, the fire will go out; similarly SIM, if there are no people who ◄gossip/tell people things that are not true►, quarreling will end.

²¹ Putting charcoal on burning coals or putting wood on a fire causes the fire to keep burning; similarly, people who like to quarrel cause people to keep arguing.

²² People enjoy listening to what gossips say about others just like SIM they enjoy tasty food; they enjoy listening to what gossips tell them like they enjoy swallowing tasty food.

²³ People who say nice things when they are thinking about doing evil things are like a nice glaze/covering on a cheap clay pot.

²⁴ Those who hate someone and are saying MTY something very different from what they are thinking are hypocrites; they are only planning to harm that person.

²² The words of one who says evil of his neighbour secretly are like sweet food, they go down into the inner parts of the stomach.

²³ Smooth lips and an evil heart are like a vessel of earth plated with silver waste.

²⁴ With his lips the hater makes things seem what they are not, but deceit is stored up inside him;

¹⁸ You're like a crazy person firing off blazing arrows and killing people

¹⁹ if you lie to your friend and then say, “I was only joking!”

²¹ An argumentative person fires up quarrels like putting charcoal on hot embers or wood on a fire.

²² Listening to gossip is like gulping down bites of your favorite food—they go deep down inside you.

²³ Smooth talking with evil intent is like a shiny lead glaze on an earthenware pot.

²⁴ People say nice things to you even though they hate you; deep down they're just lying to you.

¹⁸ As he that faineth himselfe mad, casteth fire brands, arrowes, and mortall things,

¹⁹ So dealeth the deceitfull man with his friend and sayth, Am not I in sport?

²⁰ Without wood the fire is quenched, and without a talebearer strife ceaseth.

²¹ As ye cole maketh burning coles, and wood a fire, so the contentious man is apt to kindle strife.

²² The wordes of a tale bearer are as flatterings, and they goe downe into the bowels of the belly.

²³ As siluer drosse ouerlayde vpon a potsheard, so are burning lips, and an euill heart.

²⁴ He that hateth, will counterfaite with his lips, but in his heart he layeth vp deceite.

¹⁹ so a man that annoyeth guilefully his friend, and when he is taken, he shall say, I did playing.

²⁰ When trees or woods shall fail, the fire shall be quenched; and when a privy backbiter is withdrawn, strives rest.

²¹ As dead coals at or to quick coals, and trees at the fire or wood to fire; so a wrathful man raiseth chidings.

²² The words of a privy backbiter be as simple; and those or they come till to the innerest things of the heart.

²³ As if thou wouldest adorn a vessel of earth with the dross of silver, so be swelling lips fellowshipped with a full wicked heart.

²⁴ An enemy is understood by his lips, when he treateth guiles in his heart.

¹⁷ As he that taketh a dog by the ears; so he that passeth, and is unpatient, and is meddled with the chiding of another man. (Like he who taketh a dog by the ears, is he who passeth by, and is impatient, and is mixed in, or mingled, with the argument of another man.)

¹⁸ As he is guilty, that sendeth spears and arrows into death, (Like he is guilty, who sendeth spears and arrows into uncertainty, causing death,)

¹⁹ so a man that harmeth guilefully his friend, and when he is taken, he shall say, I did playing. (is a person who deceitfully harmeth his friend, and when he is caught, he saith, I was just playing.)

²⁰ When trees fail or When woods shall fail, the fire shall be quenched; and when a privy backbiter is withdrawn, strives rest. (When there is no more wood, the fire shall be quenched; and when a gossip departeth, or stoppeth speaking, the argument shall be ended.)

²¹ As dead coals at quick coals, and trees at the fire, or As dead coals to quick coals, and wood to fire; so a wrathful man (that) raiseth chidings. (Like dead coals to burning coals, and wood to fire, is an angry person who raiseth up arguments, or strife.)

²² The words of a privy backbiter be as simple (or The words of a gossip be tasty); and those come till to the innerest things of the heart.

²³ As if thou wouldest adorn a vessel of earth, (that is, a cheap pot made out of clay), with the dross of silver, so be swelling lips fellowshipped with a full wicked heart.

²⁴ An enemy is understood by his lips, when he treateth guiles in his heart. (An enemy can be understood by his words, when he treateth deceitfulness in his heart.)
