²⁸ Yea, she lieth in wait as a robber, And increaseth the treacherous among men.

²⁹ Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? Who hath complaining? who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes?

³⁰ They that tarry long at the wine; They that go to seek out mixed wine.

³¹ Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, When it sparkleth in the cup, When it goeth down smoothly:

³² At the last it biteth like a serpent, And stingeth like an adder.

³³ Thine eyes shall behold strange things, And thy heart shall utter perverse things.

²⁸ For such a one shall perish suddenly; and every transgressor shall be cut off.

²⁹ Who has woe? who trouble? who has quarrels? and who vexations and disputes? who has bruises without a cause? whose eyes are livid?

³⁰ Are not those of them that stay long at wine? are not those of them that haunt the places where banquets are? Be not drunk with wine; but converse with just men, and converse with them openly.

³¹ For if thou shouldest set thine eyes on bowls and cups, thou shalt afterwards go more naked than a pestle.

³² But at last such a one stretches himself out as one smitten by a serpent, and venom is diffused through him as by a horned serpent.

³³ Whenever thine eyes shall behold a strange woman, then thy mouth shall speak perverse things.

³² In the ende thereof it will bite like a serpent, and hurt like a cockatrise.

When a poisonous snake bites you, you get really sick, it is very painful when a death adder bites you, in that same way after drinking wine you will get really sick. You will see frightening things that aren't there and you will talk in a stupid way. You all know about the sailing ships in the sea, the post that holds the sail is really tall. That post moves in the wind in every direction. In that same way that drunk person walks in a staggering way. And he will say, “They hit me but I didn't feel it. I didn't know

³⁰ Whether not to them, that dwell in wine, and study to drink up all of (the) cups? (Whether not to those, who live in wine, and endeavour to drink up every last drop from the cup?)

³¹ Behold thou not the wine (or Look thou not upon the wine), when it sparkleth, when the colour thereof shineth in a glass cup. It entereth sweetly,

³² but at the last it shall bite as an adder, and as a cockatrice it shall shed abroad venoms. (but in the end, it shall bite like a serpent, and it shall sting, with its venom, like a cockatrice.)

³³ Thine eyes shall see strange, (or unknown), women, and thy heart shall speak wayward things.

²⁸ She also, as catching prey, lieth in wait, And the treacherous among men she increaseth.

³² Its latter end — as a serpent it biteth, And as a basilisk it stingeth.
