² And put a knife to thy throat, If thou be a man given to appetite.

³ Be not desirous of his dainties; Seeing they are deceitful food.

⁴ Weary not thyself to be rich; Cease from thine own wisdom.

⁵ Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings, Like an eagle that flieth toward heaven.

⁶ Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, Neither desire thou his dainties:

⁷ For as he thinketh within himself, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; But his heart is not with thee.

⁸ The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, And lose thy sweet words.

⁹ Speak not in the hearing of a fool; For he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

¹⁰ Remove not the ancient landmark; And enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

¹¹ For their Redeemer is strong; He will plead their cause against thee.

¹² Apply thy heart unto instruction, And thine ears to the words of knowledge.

¹³ Withhold not correction from the child; For if thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.

¹⁴ Thou shalt beat him with the rod, And shalt deliver his soul from Sheol.

¹⁵ My son, if thy heart be wise, My heart will be glad, even mine:

¹⁶ Yea, my heart will rejoice, When thy lips speak right things.

¹⁷ Let not thy heart envy sinners; But be thou in the fear of Jehovah all the day long:

¹⁸ For surely there is a reward; And thy hope shall not be cut off.

¹⁹ Hear thou, my son, and be wise, And guide thy heart in the way.

²⁰ Be not among winebibbers, Among gluttonous eaters of flesh:

²¹ For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.

² and apply thine hand, knowing that it behoves thee to prepare such meats: but if thou art very insatiable,

³ desire not his provisions; for these belong to a false life.

⁴ If thou art poor, measure not thyself with a rich man; but refrain thyself in thy wisdom.

⁵ If thou shouldest fix thine eye upon him, he will disappear; for wings like an eagle's are prepared for him, and he returns to the house of his master.

⁶ Sup not with an envious man, neither desire thou his meats:

⁷ so he eats and drinks as if any one should swallow a hair, and do not bring him in to thyself, nor eat thy morsel with him:

⁸ for he will vomit it up, and spoil thy fair words.

⁹ Say nothing in the ears of a fool, lest at any time he sneer at thy wise words.

¹⁰ Remove not the ancient landmarks; and enter not upon the possession of the fatherless:

¹¹ for the Lord is their redeemer; he is mighty, and will plead their cause with thee.

² Even if you ◄have a big appetite/want to eat a lot of food►, restrain yourself.

³ Do not want to eat a lot of his fine food, because he may be trying to trick you.

⁴ Do not cause yourself to become very tired by working very hard to become rich; be wise and stop doing that,

⁵ because as soon as you look MTY at all the money that you have acquired, it will be gone; it will disappear as if it suddenly grew wings SIM and flew up into the sky like an eagle.

⁶ If someone who is stingy invites you to a meal, do not eat a lot of his fine food,

⁷ because he will be thinking about how much the food cost that you are eating. He will say to you, “Eat and drink all that you want!”, but that is not what he will really be thinking.

⁸ When you realize what he is really thinking, it will cause you to want to vomit what you have eaten; and your kind words telling him that you are enjoying the meal will be wasted.

⁹ ◄Do not waste time by/It is useless► talking to foolish people; they will only despise the wise things that you say.

¹⁰ Do not steal someone's property by removing a boundary marker that has been there for a long time, and do not take for yourself the land that belongs to orphans,

¹¹ because Yahweh is strong, and he is like a relative that has the responsibility to defend them, he will stand up in court and argue for them and against you.

¹² Pay attention to what your teachers teach you, and try to learn from the wise things that they say.

¹³ Do not refuse to discipline your children; if you punish/spank them, it will not cause them to die,

¹⁴ and it may save them from going to the place where dead people are.

¹⁵ My son/child, if you SYN become wise, I SYN will be very happy.

¹⁶ I SYN will rejoice when I hear you SYN say what is right/wise.

¹⁷ Do not envy sinful people; instead, revere Yahweh all of your life.

¹⁸ If you do that, you will be happy in the future, and God will certainly do for you what you are confidently expecting him to do.

¹⁹ My son/child, listen carefully to me and become wise, and think about ◄all that you do/your behavior►.

²⁰ Do not associate with those who drink a lot of ◄wine/strong drink► or with those who ◄are gluttons/eat more than they should►,

²¹ because drunkards and gluttons will become poor; and if all that you do is eat and sleep, you will soon ◄be wearing rags/not have any money to buy clothes►.

⁴ Take no care to get wealth; let there be an end to your desire for money.

⁵ Are your eyes lifted up to it? it is gone: for wealth takes to itself wings, like an eagle in flight up to heaven.

⁶ Do not take the food of him who has an evil eye, or have any desire for his delicate meat:

⁷ For as the thoughts of his heart are, so is he: Take food and drink, he says to you; but his heart is not with you.

⁸ The food which you have taken will come up again, and your pleasing words will be wasted.

⁹ Say nothing in the hearing of a foolish man, for he will put no value on the wisdom of your words.

¹⁰ Do not let the landmark of the widow be moved, and do not go into the fields of those who have no father;

¹¹ For their saviour is strong, and he will take up their cause against you.

¹² Give your heart to teaching, and your ears to the words of knowledge.

¹³ Do not keep back training from the child: for even if you give him blows with the rod, it will not be death to him.

¹⁴ Give him blows with the rod, and keep his soul safe from the underworld.

¹⁵ My son, if your heart becomes wise, I, even I, will be glad in heart;

¹⁶ And my thoughts in me will be full of joy when your lips say right things.

¹⁷ Have no envy of sinners in your heart, but keep in the fear of the Lord all through the day;

¹⁸ For without doubt there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.

¹⁹ Give ear, my son, and be wise, guiding your heart in the right way.

²⁰ Do not be among those who give themselves to wine-drinking, or among those who make themselves full with meat:

²¹ For those who take delight in drink and feasting will come to be in need; and through love of sleep a man will be poorly clothed.

⁹ Speak not in the ears of fools: because they will despise the instruction of thy speech.

¹⁰ Touch not the bounds of little ones: and enter not into the field of the fatherless:

¹¹ For their near kinsman is strong: and he will judge their cause against thee.

¹² Let thy heart apply itself to instruction: and thy ears to words of knowledge.

¹³ Withhold not correction from a child: for if thou strike him with the rod, he shall not die.

¹⁴ Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and deliver his soul from hell.

¹⁵ My son, if thy mind be wise, my heart shall rejoice with thee:

¹⁶ And my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips shall speak what is right.

¹⁷ Let not thy heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long:

¹⁸ Because thou shalt have hope in the latter end, and thy expectation shall not be taken away.

¹⁹ Hear thou, my son, and be wise: and guide thy mind in the way.

²⁰ Be not in the feasts of great drinkers, nor in their revellings, who contribute flesh to eat:

²¹ Because they that give themselves to drinking, and that club together shall be consumed; and drowsiness shall be clothed with rags.

² and cut down if you have a big appetite.

³ Don't be greedy for his fancy food, for it's offered with deceptive motives.

⁴ Don't wear yourself out trying to get rich—be wise enough not to bother!

⁵ It disappears in the blink of an eye, suddenly growing wings and flying off into the sky like an eagle.

⁶ Don't accept meal invitations from miserly people; don't be greedy for their fancy food,

⁷ for what they're thinking inside is what they really are. They say, “Come on, eat and drink!”—but in their minds they don't really care about you.

⁸ You'll vomit up the little pieces you've eaten, and your kind words of appreciation will be wasted.

⁹ Don't talk to stupid people because they'll ridicule your wise words.

¹⁰ Don't move ancient boundary markers, and don't encroach on fields belonging to orphans,

¹¹ for their Protector is powerful and he will plead their case against you.

¹² Focus your mind on instruction; listen intently to words of knowledge.

¹³ Don't keep from disciplining your children—a beating won't kill them.

¹⁴ If you use physical correction you can save them from death.

¹⁵ My son, if you think wisely then I'll be happy;

¹⁶ I'll be delighted when you say what's right.

¹⁷ Don't think enviously of sinners, but always remember to honor the Lord,

¹⁸ for there's definitely a future for you, and your hope will not be crushed.

¹⁹ Pay attention, my son, and be wise; make sure your mind concentrates on following the right way.

²⁰ Don't join in with people who drink too much wine or who stuff themselves with meat.

¹⁰ Touch thou not the terms, (or the boundary stones, of the property) of little children; and enter thou not into the field of fatherless and motherless children.

¹¹ For the neighbour of them is strong, and he shall deem their cause against thee. (For their Friend is strong, and he shall judge their case against thee.)

¹² Thine heart enter to teaching, and thine ears to the words of knowing. (Let thy heart draw close to instruction, and thy ears to words of knowledge.)

¹³ Do not thou withdraw chastising, (or discipline), from a child; for though thou smitest him with a rod, he shall not die.

¹⁴ Thou shalt smite him with a rod, and thou shalt deliver his soul from hell. (Thou shalt strike him with a rod, and so thou shalt rescue his soul from Sheol, or from the land of the dead, or from hell itself.)

¹⁵ My son, if thy soul is wise, mine heart shall have joy with thee; (My son, if thou be wise, my heart shall have joy over thee;)

¹⁶ and my reins shall make full out joy, when thy lips speak rightful thing(s).

¹⁷ (Let) Thine heart follow not sinners; but be thou in the dread of the Lord all day (or but be thou in the fear of the Lord or with reverence for the Lord all day long).

¹⁸ For thou shalt have hope at the last, and thine abiding shall not be done away.

¹⁹ My son, hear thou, and be wise, and (ad)dress thy soul in the way (or and direct thy soul to the right way).

²⁰ Do not thou be in the feasts of drinkers, neither in the oft eatings of them, that bring together fleshes to eat. (Do not thou be at the feasts of drinkers, nor at the oft eatings of those who bring much meat to eat.)

²¹ For men giving attention to drinks, and giving morsels together, shall be wasted, and napping shall be clothed with clothes rent. (For those giving attention to drinks, and giving morsels to each other, shall be wasted, or destroyed, and their napping shall eventually clothe them with torn clothes.)

² And thou hast put a knife to thy throat, If thou art a man of appetite.

³ Have no desire to his dainties, seeing it is lying food.

⁴ Labour not to make wealth, From thine own understanding cease, Dost thou cause thine eyes to fly upon it? Then it is not.

⁵ For wealth maketh to itself wings, As an eagle it flieth to the heavens.

⁶ Eat not the bread of an evil eye, And have no desire to his dainties,

⁷ For as he hath thought in his soul, so is he, 'Eat and drink,' saith he to thee, And his heart is not with thee.

⁸ Thy morsel thou hast eaten thou dost vomit up, And hast marred thy words that are sweet.

⁹ In the ears of a fool speak not, For he treadeth on the wisdom of thy words.

¹⁰ Remove not a border of olden times, And into fields of the fatherless enter not,

¹¹ For their Redeemer is strong, He doth plead their cause with thee.

¹² Bring in to instruction thy heart, And thine ear to sayings of knowledge.

¹³ Withhold not from a youth chastisement, When thou smitest him with a rod he dieth not.

¹⁴ Thou with a rod smitest him, And his soul from Sheol thou deliverest.

¹⁵ My son, if thy heart hath been wise, My heart rejoiceth, even mine,

¹⁶ And my reins exult when thy lips speak uprightly.

¹⁷ Let not thy heart be envious at sinners, But — in the fear of Jehovah all the day.

¹⁸ For, is there a posterity? Then thy hope is not cut off.

¹⁹ Hear thou, my son, and be wise, And make happy in the way thy heart,

²⁰ Be not thou among quaffers of wine, Among gluttonous ones of flesh,

²¹ For the quaffer and glutton become poor, And drowsiness clotheth with rags.
