¹⁹ Hear thou, my son, and be wise, And guide thy heart in the way.

²⁰ Be not among winebibbers, Among gluttonous eaters of flesh:

²¹ For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.

²² Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she is old.

²³ Buy the truth, and sell it not; Yea, wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

²⁴ The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; And he that begetteth a wise child will have joy of him.

²¹ because drunkards and gluttons will become poor; and if all that you do is eat and sleep, you will soon ◄be wearing rags/not have any money to buy clothes►.

²² Pay attention to what your father tells you, and ◄do not neglect/take care of► LIT your mother when she is old.

²³ Try to know/learn what is wise, and get good instruction and understanding; and do not throw those things away.

²⁴ Righteous children will cause their parents to be very happy; those whose children are wise are proud of them.

¹⁹ Pay attention, my son, and be wise; make sure your mind concentrates on following the right way.

²⁰ Don't join in with people who drink too much wine or who stuff themselves with meat.

²¹ For people who get drunk and overeat lose all they've got, and they spend so much time dozing that all they have left to wear is rags.

²² Pay attention to your father, and don't disregard your mother when she's old.

²³ Invest in truth—and don't sell it! Invest in wisdom, instruction, and understanding.

²⁴ Children who do right make their fathers very happy; a wise son brings joy to his father.

²³ Buy thou truth, and do not thou sell wisdom, and doctrine, and understanding.

²⁴ The father of a just or rightwise man joyeth full out with joy; he that begat a wise man, shall be glad in him.

¹⁹ My son, hear thou, and be wise, and (ad)dress thy soul in the way (or and direct thy soul to the right way).

²⁰ Do not thou be in the feasts of drinkers, neither in the oft eatings of them, that bring together fleshes to eat. (Do not thou be at the feasts of drinkers, nor at the oft eatings of those who bring much meat to eat.)

²¹ For men giving attention to drinks, and giving morsels together, shall be wasted, and napping shall be clothed with clothes rent. (For those giving attention to drinks, and giving morsels to each other, shall be wasted, or destroyed, and their napping shall eventually clothe them with torn clothes.)

²² Hear thy father, that begat thee, (or Listen to thy father, who begat thee); and despise not thy mother, when she is eld.

²³ Buy thou truth, and do not thou sell (off) wisdom, and doctrine, and understanding.

²⁴ The father of a just man joyeth full out with joy; he that begat a wise man, shall be glad in him. (The father of a righteous person rejoiceth with great joy; he who begat someone who is wise, shall take much pleasure, or pride, in him.)

²⁰ Be not thou among quaffers of wine, Among gluttonous ones of flesh,

²¹ For the quaffer and glutton become poor, And drowsiness clotheth with rags.

²² Hearken to thy father, who begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she hath become old.

²³ Truth buy, and sell not, Wisdom, and instruction, and understanding,

²⁴ The father of the righteous rejoiceth greatly, The begetter of the wise rejoiceth in him.
