¹³ Withhold not correction from the child; For if thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.

¹⁴ Thou shalt beat him with the rod, And shalt deliver his soul from Sheol.

¹⁵ My son, if thy heart be wise, My heart will be glad, even mine:

¹⁶ Yea, my heart will rejoice, When thy lips speak right things.

¹⁷ Let not thy heart envy sinners; But be thou in the fear of Jehovah all the day long:

¹⁸ For surely there is a reward; And thy hope shall not be cut off.

¹⁹ Hear thou, my son, and be wise, And guide thy heart in the way.

²⁰ Be not among winebibbers, Among gluttonous eaters of flesh:

²¹ For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.

¹³ Refrain not from chastening a child; for if thou beat him with the rod, he shall not die.

¹⁴ and it may save them from going to the place where dead people are.

¹⁵ My son/child, if you SYN become wise, I SYN will be very happy.

¹⁶ I SYN will rejoice when I hear you SYN say what is right/wise.

¹⁷ Do not envy sinful people; instead, revere Yahweh all of your life.

¹⁸ If you do that, you will be happy in the future, and God will certainly do for you what you are confidently expecting him to do.

¹⁹ My son/child, listen carefully to me and become wise, and think about ◄all that you do/your behavior►.

²⁰ Do not associate with those who drink a lot of ◄wine/strong drink► or with those who ◄are gluttons/eat more than they should►,

²¹ because drunkards and gluttons will become poor; and if all that you do is eat and sleep, you will soon ◄be wearing rags/not have any money to buy clothes►.

¹⁵ My son, if your heart becomes wise, I, even I, will be glad in heart;

¹⁶ And my thoughts in me will be full of joy when your lips say right things.

¹⁷ Have no envy of sinners in your heart, but keep in the fear of the Lord all through the day;

¹⁸ For without doubt there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.

¹⁹ Give ear, my son, and be wise, guiding your heart in the right way.

²⁰ Do not be among those who give themselves to wine-drinking, or among those who make themselves full with meat:

²¹ For those who take delight in drink and feasting will come to be in need; and through love of sleep a man will be poorly clothed.

²⁰ Be not in the feasts of great drinkers, nor in their revellings, who contribute flesh to eat:

²¹ Because they that give themselves to drinking, and that club together shall be consumed; and drowsiness shall be clothed with rags.

¹³ Don't keep from disciplining your children—a beating won't kill them.

¹⁴ If you use physical correction you can save them from death.

¹⁵ My son, if you think wisely then I'll be happy;

¹⁶ I'll be delighted when you say what's right.

¹⁷ Don't think enviously of sinners, but always remember to honor the Lord,

¹⁸ for there's definitely a future for you, and your hope will not be crushed.

¹⁹ Pay attention, my son, and be wise; make sure your mind concentrates on following the right way.

²⁰ Don't join in with people who drink too much wine or who stuff themselves with meat.

²¹ For people who get drunk and overeat lose all they've got, and they spend so much time dozing that all they have left to wear is rags.

¹³ Withhold not correction from the childe: if thou smite him with the rodde, he shall not die.

¹⁴ Thou shalt smite him with the rodde, and shalt deliuer his soule from hell.

¹⁵ My sonne, if thine heart be wise, mine heart shall reioyce, and I also.

¹⁶ And my reynes shall reioyce, when thy lips speake righteous things.

¹⁷ Let not thine heart bee enuious against sinners: but let it bee in the feare of the Lord continually.

¹⁸ For surely there is an ende, and thy hope shall not be cut off.

¹⁹ O thou my sonne, heare, and bee wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

²⁰ Keepe not company with drunkards, nor with gluttons.

²¹ For the drunkard and the glutton shall bee poore, and the sleeper shalbe clothed with ragges.

¹⁷ Let not thy heart be envious against sinners; but remain in the fear of the lord all the time.

²⁰ Do not thou be in the feasts of drinkers, neither in the oft eatings of them, that bring together fleshes to eat.

²¹ For men giving attention to drinks, and giving morsels together, shall be wasted, and napping shall be clothed with clothes rent.

¹³ Do not thou withdraw chastising, (or discipline), from a child; for though thou smitest him with a rod, he shall not die.

¹⁴ Thou shalt smite him with a rod, and thou shalt deliver his soul from hell. (Thou shalt strike him with a rod, and so thou shalt rescue his soul from Sheol, or from the land of the dead, or from hell itself.)

¹⁵ My son, if thy soul is wise, mine heart shall have joy with thee; (My son, if thou be wise, my heart shall have joy over thee;)

¹⁶ and my reins shall make full out joy, when thy lips speak rightful thing(s).

¹⁷ (Let) Thine heart follow not sinners; but be thou in the dread of the Lord all day (or but be thou in the fear of the Lord or with reverence for the Lord all day long).

¹⁸ For thou shalt have hope at the last, and thine abiding shall not be done away.

¹⁹ My son, hear thou, and be wise, and (ad)dress thy soul in the way (or and direct thy soul to the right way).

²⁰ Do not thou be in the feasts of drinkers, neither in the oft eatings of them, that bring together fleshes to eat. (Do not thou be at the feasts of drinkers, nor at the oft eatings of those who bring much meat to eat.)

²¹ For men giving attention to drinks, and giving morsels together, shall be wasted, and napping shall be clothed with clothes rent. (For those giving attention to drinks, and giving morsels to each other, shall be wasted, or destroyed, and their napping shall eventually clothe them with torn clothes.)

¹³ Withhold not from a youth chastisement, When thou smitest him with a rod he dieth not.

¹⁴ Thou with a rod smitest him, And his soul from Sheol thou deliverest.

¹⁵ My son, if thy heart hath been wise, My heart rejoiceth, even mine,

¹⁶ And my reins exult when thy lips speak uprightly.

¹⁷ Let not thy heart be envious at sinners, But — in the fear of Jehovah all the day.

¹⁸ For, is there a posterity? Then thy hope is not cut off.

¹⁹ Hear thou, my son, and be wise, And make happy in the way thy heart,

²⁰ Be not thou among quaffers of wine, Among gluttonous ones of flesh,

²¹ For the quaffer and glutton become poor, And drowsiness clotheth with rags.
