Proverbs 23:10-31 in American Standard Version (1901)

10 Remove not the ancient landmark; And enter not into the fields of the fatherless:
11 For their Redeemer is strong; He will plead their cause against thee.
12 Apply thy heart unto instruction, And thine ears to the words of knowledge.
13 Withhold not correction from the child; For if thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.
14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, And shalt deliver his soul from Sheol.
15 My son, if thy heart be wise, My heart will be glad, even mine:
16 Yea, my heart will rejoice, When thy lips speak right things.
17 Let not thy heart envy sinners; But be thou in the fear of Jehovah all the day long:
18 For surely there is a reward; And thy hope shall not be cut off.
19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, And guide thy heart in the way.
20 Be not among winebibbers, Among gluttonous eaters of flesh:
21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.
22 Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she is old.
23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; Yea, wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
24 The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; And he that begetteth a wise child will have joy of him.
25 Let thy father and thy mother be glad, And let her that bare thee rejoice.
26 My son, give me thy heart; And let thine eyes delight in my ways.
27 For a harlot is a deep ditch; And a foreign woman is a narrow pit.
28 Yea, she lieth in wait as a robber, And increaseth the treacherous among men.
29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? Who hath complaining? who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes?
30 They that tarry long at the wine; They that go to seek out mixed wine.
31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, When it sparkleth in the cup, When it goeth down smoothly:

Proverbs 23:10-31 in Brenton Septuagint Translation

10 Remove not the ancient landmarks; and enter not upon the possession of the fatherless:
11 for the Lord is their redeemer; he is mighty, and will plead their cause with thee.
12 Apply thine heart to instruction, and prepare thine ears for words of discretion.
13 Refrain not from chastening a child; for if thou beat him with the rod, he shall not die.
14 For thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from death.
15 Son, if thy heart be wise, thou shalt also gladden my heart;
16 and thy lips shall converse with my lips, if they be right.
17 Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day.
18 For if thou shouldest keep these things, thou shalt have posterity; and thine hope shall not be removed.
19 Hear, my son, and be wise, and rightly direct the thoughts of thine heart.
20 Be not a wine-bibber, neither continue long at feasts, and purchases of flesh:
21 for every drunkard and whoremonger shall be poor; and every sluggard shall clothe himself with tatters and ragged garments.
22 Hearken, my son, to thy father which begot thee, and despise not thy mother because she is grown old.
24 A righteous father brings up his children well; and his soul rejoices over a wise son.
25 Let thy father and thy mother rejoice over thee, and let her that bore thee be glad.
26 My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
27 For a strange house is a vessel full of holes; and a strange well is narrow.
28 For such a one shall perish suddenly; and every transgressor shall be cut off.
29 Who has woe? who trouble? who has quarrels? and who vexations and disputes? who has bruises without a cause? whose eyes are livid?
30 Are not those of them that stay long at wine? are not those of them that haunt the places where banquets are? Be not drunk with wine; but converse with just men, and converse with them openly.
31 For if thou shouldest set thine eyes on bowls and cups, thou shalt afterwards go more naked than a pestle.

Proverbs 23:10-31 in Translation for Translators

10 Do not steal someone's property by removing a boundary marker that has been there for a long time, and do not take for yourself the land that belongs to orphans,
11 because Yahweh is strong, and he is like a relative that has the responsibility to defend them, he will stand up in court and argue for them and against you.
12 Pay attention to what your teachers teach you, and try to learn from the wise things that they say.
13 Do not refuse to discipline your children; if you punish/spank them, it will not cause them to die,
14 and it may save them from going to the place where dead people are.
15 My son/child, if you SYN become wise, I SYN will be very happy.
16 I SYN will rejoice when I hear you SYN say what is right/wise.
17 Do not envy sinful people; instead, revere Yahweh all of your life.
18 If you do that, you will be happy in the future, and God will certainly do for you what you are confidently expecting him to do.
19 My son/child, listen carefully to me and become wise, and think about ◄all that you do/your behavior►.
20 Do not associate with those who drink a lot of ◄wine/strong drink► or with those who ◄are gluttons/eat more than they should►,
21 because drunkards and gluttons will become poor; and if all that you do is eat and sleep, you will soon ◄be wearing rags/not have any money to buy clothes►.
22 Pay attention to what your father tells you, and ◄do not neglect/take care of► LIT your mother when she is old.
23 Try to know/learn what is wise, and get good instruction and understanding; and do not throw those things away.
24 Righteous children will cause their parents to be very happy; those whose children are wise are proud of them.
25 Do what will cause your father to be glad and enable your mother also to be happy.
26 My son, heed what I say to you, and allow what I do to be an example for you.
27 Prostitutes and immoral women DOU are like MET a deep pit or a well that you may fall into.
28 They wait for you like robbers SIM, and they cause many men to ◄be unfaithful to/have sex with women who are not► their wives.
29 I will tell you RHQ what kind of people are always miserable and sad. I will tell you RHQ which people are always causing arguments/quarrels and who are always complaining. I will tell you RHQ who are injured in fights and whose eyes are always red/bloodshot.
30 It is those who drink a lot of wine, who try drinking other kinds of strong drinks.
31 Do not look with pleasure at red wine that looks nice, and which sparkles when it is poured out into cups, and which tastes good as you drink it,

Proverbs 23:10-31 in World English Bible with Deuterocanon

10 Don’t move the ancient boundary stone. Don’t encroach on the fields of the fatherless,
11 for their Defender is strong. He will plead their case against you.
12 Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to the words of knowledge.
13 Don’t withhold correction from a child. If you punish him with the rod, he will not die.
14 Punish him with the rod, and save his soul from Sheol.
15 My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad, even mine.
16 Yes, my heart will rejoice when your lips speak what is right.
17 Don’t let your heart envy sinners, but rather fear Yahweh all day long.
18 Indeed surely there is a future hope, and your hope will not be cut off.
19 Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path!
20 Don’t be among ones drinking too much wine, or those who gorge themselves on meat;
21 for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor; and drowsiness clothes them in rags.
22 Listen to your father who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother when she is old.
23 Buy the truth, and don’t sell it. Get wisdom, discipline, and understanding.
24 The father of the righteous has great joy. Whoever fathers a wise child delights in him.
25 Let your father and your mother be glad! Let her who bore you rejoice!
26 My son, give me your heart; and let your eyes keep in my ways.
27 For a prostitute is a deep pit; and a wayward wife is a narrow well.
28 Yes, she lies in wait like a robber, and increases the unfaithful among men.
29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?
30 Those who stay long at the wine; those who go to seek out mixed wine.
31 Don’t look at the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly.

Proverbs 23:10-31 in Bible in Basic English

10 Do not let the landmark of the widow be moved, and do not go into the fields of those who have no father;
11 For their saviour is strong, and he will take up their cause against you.
12 Give your heart to teaching, and your ears to the words of knowledge.
13 Do not keep back training from the child: for even if you give him blows with the rod, it will not be death to him.
14 Give him blows with the rod, and keep his soul safe from the underworld.
15 My son, if your heart becomes wise, I, even I, will be glad in heart;
16 And my thoughts in me will be full of joy when your lips say right things.
17 Have no envy of sinners in your heart, but keep in the fear of the Lord all through the day;
18 For without doubt there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.
19 Give ear, my son, and be wise, guiding your heart in the right way.
20 Do not be among those who give themselves to wine-drinking, or among those who make themselves full with meat:
21 For those who take delight in drink and feasting will come to be in need; and through love of sleep a man will be poorly clothed.
22 Give ear to your father whose child you are, and do not keep honour from your mother when she is old.
23 Get for yourself that which is true, and do not let it go for money; get wisdom and teaching and good sense.
24 The father of the upright man will be glad, and he who has a wise child will have joy because of him.
25 Let your father and your mother be glad, let her who gave you birth have joy.
26 My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes take delight in my ways.
27 For a loose woman is a deep hollow, and a strange woman is a narrow water-hole.
28 Yes, she is waiting secretly like a beast for its food, and deceit by her is increased among men.
29 Who says, Oh! who says, Ah! who has violent arguments, who has grief, who has wounds without cause, whose eyes are dark?
30 Those who are seated late over the wine: those who go looking for mixed wine.
31 Keep your eyes from looking on the wine when it is red, when its colour is bright in the cup, when it goes smoothly down:

Proverbs 23:10-31 in Douay-Rheims 1899

10 Touch not the bounds of little ones: and enter not into the field of the fatherless:
11 For their near kinsman is strong: and he will judge their cause against thee.
12 Let thy heart apply itself to instruction: and thy ears to words of knowledge.
13 Withhold not correction from a child: for if thou strike him with the rod, he shall not die.
14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and deliver his soul from hell.
15 My son, if thy mind be wise, my heart shall rejoice with thee:
16 And my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips shall speak what is right.
17 Let not thy heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long:
18 Because thou shalt have hope in the latter end, and thy expectation shall not be taken away.
19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise: and guide thy mind in the way.
20 Be not in the feasts of great drinkers, nor in their revellings, who contribute flesh to eat:
21 Because they that give themselves to drinking, and that club together shall be consumed; and drowsiness shall be clothed with rags.
22 Hearken to thy father, that beget thee: and despise not thy mother when she is old.
23 Buy truth, and do not sell wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
24 The father of the just rejoiceth greatly: he that hath begotten a wise son, shall have joy in him.
25 Let thy father, and thy mother be joyful, and let her rejoice that bore thee.
26 My son, give me thy heart: and let thy eyes keep my ways.
27 For a harlot is a deep ditch: and a strange woman is a narrow pit.
28 She lieth in wait in the way as a robber, and him whom she shall see unwary, she will kill.
29 Who hath woe? whose father hath woe? who hath contentions? who falls into pits? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
30 Surely they that pass their time in wine, and study to drink of their cups.
31 Look not upon the wine when it is yellow, when the colour thereof shineth in the glass: it goeth in pleasantly,

11 for their Protector is powerful and he will plead their case against you.
12 Focus your mind on instruction; listen intently to words of knowledge.
13 Don't keep from disciplining your children—a beating won't kill them.
14 If you use physical correction you can save them from death.
15 My son, if you think wisely then I'll be happy;
16 I'll be delighted when you say what's right.
17 Don't think enviously of sinners, but always remember to honor the Lord,
18 for there's definitely a future for you, and your hope will not be crushed.
19 Pay attention, my son, and be wise; make sure your mind concentrates on following the right way.
20 Don't join in with people who drink too much wine or who stuff themselves with meat.
21 For people who get drunk and overeat lose all they've got, and they spend so much time dozing that all they have left to wear is rags.
22 Pay attention to your father, and don't disregard your mother when she's old.
23 Invest in truth—and don't sell it! Invest in wisdom, instruction, and understanding.
24 Children who do right make their fathers very happy; a wise son brings joy to his father.
25 Make your father and mother happy; bring joy to her who gave birth to you.
26 My son, give me your undivided attention, and cheerfully follow my example.
27 A prostitute is like being trapped in a pit; an immoral woman is like getting stuck a narrow well,
28 Like a robber, she lies in wait ready to ambush men and make more of them unfaithful to their wives.
29 Who's in trouble? Who's in pain? Who's arguing? Who's complaining? Who's injured for no reason? Who's got bloodshot eyes?
30 —those who spend a long time drinking wine, those who are always trying some new cocktail.
31 Don't let the look of wine tempt you—how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup, how smooth it feels as it goes down.

Proverbs 23:10-31 in Geneva Bible 1599

10 Remooue not the ancient boundes, and enter not into the fieldes of the fatherlesse.
11 For he that redeemeth them, is mightie: he will defend their cause against thee.
12 Apply thine heart to instruction, and thine eares to the wordes of knowledge.
13 Withhold not correction from the childe: if thou smite him with the rodde, he shall not die.
14 Thou shalt smite him with the rodde, and shalt deliuer his soule from hell.
15 My sonne, if thine heart be wise, mine heart shall reioyce, and I also.
16 And my reynes shall reioyce, when thy lips speake righteous things.
17 Let not thine heart bee enuious against sinners: but let it bee in the feare of the Lord continually.
18 For surely there is an ende, and thy hope shall not be cut off.
19 O thou my sonne, heare, and bee wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
20 Keepe not company with drunkards, nor with gluttons.
21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall bee poore, and the sleeper shalbe clothed with ragges.
22 Obey thy father that hath begotten thee, and despise not thy mother when she is olde.
23 Bye the trueth, but sell it not: likewise wisdome, and instruction, and vnderstanding.
24 The father of the righteous shall greatly reioyce, and hee that begetteth a wise childe, shall haue ioy of him.
25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall reioyce.
26 My sonne, giue mee thine heart, and let thine eyes delite in my wayes.
27 For a whore is as a deepe ditche, and a strange woman is as a narrowe pitte.
28 Also she lyeth in wait as for a praye, and she increaseth the transgressers among men.
29 To whome is woe? to whome is sorowe? to whom is strife? to whom is murmuring? to whom are woundes without cause? and to whome is the rednesse of the eyes?
30 Euen to them that tarie long at the wine, to them that goe, and seeke mixt wine.
31 Looke not thou vpon the wine, when it is red, and when it sheweth his colour in the cup, or goeth downe pleasantly.

10 Remove not the ancient landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless;
11 For their Redeemer is strong; He will plead their cause with thee.
12 Apply thy heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
13 Withhold not correction from the child; for though thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.
14 Thou beatest him with the rod, and wilt deliver his soul from the nether-world.
15 My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart will be glad, even mine;
16 Yea, my reins will rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.
17 Let not thy heart envy sinners, but be in the fear of the LORD all the day;
18 For surely there is a future; and thy hope shall not be cut off.
19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thy heart in the way.
20 Be not among winebibbers; among gluttonous eaters of flesh;
21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.
22 Hearken unto thy father that begot thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
24 The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; and he that begetteth a wise child will have joy of him.
25 Let thy father and thy mother be glad, and let her that bore thee rejoice.
26 My son, give me thy heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
27 For a harlot is a deep ditch; and an alien woman is a narrow pit.
28 She also lieth in wait as a robber, and increaseth the faithless among men.
29 Who crieth: 'Woe'? who: 'Alas'? who hath contentions? who hath raving? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to try mixed wine.
31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its colour in the cup, when it glideth down smoothly;

10 Remove not the ancient landmark, and into the fields of the fatherless must thou not enter;
11 For their redeemer is strong; he will indeed plead their cause with thee.
12 Apply thy heart unto instruction, and thy ears to the sayings of knowledge.
13 Withhold not from a lad correction; for if thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.
14 Thou wilt indeed beat him with the rod; but thou wilt deliver his soul from perdition.
15 My son, If thy heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.
16 And my reins shall exult when thy lips speak what is equitable.
17 Let not thy heart be envious against sinners; but remain in the fear of the lord all the time.
18 For surely there is a future, and thy hope will not be cut off.
19 Hear thou, my son, and become wise, and guide thy heart on the right way.
20 Be not among those that drink wine immoderately, among those that over-indulge in eating flesh:
21 For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty; and drowsiness clotheth a man in rags.
22 Hearken unto thy father that hath begotten thee, and despise not thy mother although she be old.
23 Buy the truth and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
24 The father of the righteous will be greatly glad, and he that begetteth a wise child will have joy through him.
25 Let then thy father and thy mother rejoice, and let her that hath born thee be glad.
26 Give, my son, thy heart unto me, and let thy eyes watch my ways.
27 For a harlot is a deep ditch, and a strange woman is a narrow well.
28 She also lieth in wait like a robber, and she increaseth the treacherous among men.
29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath quarrels? who hath complaints? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
30 They that tarry late over the wine: they that come to seek for mixed drink.
31 Do not look on the wine when it looketh red, when it giveth its color in the cup, when it glideth down so readily.

Proverbs 23:10-31 in Updated Brenton English Septuagint

10 Remove not the ancient landmarks; And enter not upon the possession of the fatherless:
11 For the Lord is their redeemer; He is mighty, and will plead their cause with thee.
12 Apply thy heart to instruction, And prepare thine ears for words of discretion.
13 Refrain not from chastening a child; For if thou beat him with the rod, he shall not die.
14 For thou shalt beat him with the rod, And shalt deliver his soul from death.
15 Son, if thy heart be wise, Thou shalt also gladden my heart;
16 And thy lips shall converse with my lips, If they be right.
17 Let not thy heart envy sinners: But be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day.
18 For if thou shouldest keep these things, thou shalt have posterity; And thy hope shall not be removed.
19 Hear, my son, and be wise, And rightly direct the thoughts of thy heart.
20 Be not a wine bibber, Neither continue long at feasts, and purchases of flesh:
21 For every drunkard and whoremonger shall be poor; And every sluggard shall clothe himself with tatters and ragged garments.
22 Hearken, my son, to thy father which begot thee, And despise not thy mother because she is grown old.
24 A righteous father brings up his children well; And his soul rejoices over a wise son.
25 Let thy father and thy mother rejoice over thee, And let her that bore thee be glad.
26 My son, give me thy heart, And let thine eyes observe my ways.
31 For if thou shouldest set thine eyes on bowls and cups, Thou shalt afterward go more naked than a pestle.

Proverbs 23:10-31 in Nyangumarta English Bible

19 Listen, son! Think properly and live in the proper way. Don't join with others who are drinkers of lots of wine and those who are greedy for food. People like that are making themselves poor.
29 Who is really upset? Who is unhappy? Who is always fighting? Who is always growling? Who has sores after falling accidentally? Who has red eyes? Those who are always drinking, testing different kinds of wine. That wine is good to look at, and really sweet to taste. Don't ever trust it. When a poisonous snake bites you, you get really sick, it is very painful when a death adder bites you, in that same way after drinking wine you will get really sick. You will see frightening things that aren't there and you will talk in a stupid way. You all know about the sailing ships in the sea, the post that holds the sail is really tall. That post moves in the wind in every direction. In that same way that drunk person walks in a staggering way. And he will say, “They hit me but I didn't feel it. I didn't know

12 Thine heart enter to teaching, and thine ears to the words of knowing.
13 Do not thou withdraw chastising or discipline, from a child; for though thou smitest him with a rod, he shall not die.
14 Thou shalt smite him with a rod, and thou shalt deliver his soul from hell.
15 My son, if thy soul is wise, mine heart shall have joy with thee;
16 and my reins shall make full out joy, when thy lips speak rightful or right things.
17 Thine heart pursue or follow not sinners; but be thou in the dread of the Lord all day.
18 For thou shalt have hope at the last, and thine abiding shall not be done away.
19 My son, hear thou, and be wise, and address thy soul in the way.
20 Do not thou be in the feasts of drinkers, neither in the oft eatings of them, that bring together fleshes to eat.
21 For men giving attention to drinks, and giving morsels together, shall be wasted, and napping shall be clothed with clothes rent.
22 Hear thy father, that begat thee; and despise not thy mother, when she is eld.
23 Buy thou truth, and do not thou sell wisdom, and doctrine, and understanding.
24 The father of a just or rightwise man joyeth full out with joy; he that begat a wise man, shall be glad in him.
25 Thy father and thy mother have joy, and he that begat thee, make full out joy.
26 My son, give thine heart to me, and thine eyes keep my ways.
27 For a whore is a deep ditch, and an alien woman, is a strait pit.
28 She setteth ambush in the way, as a thief; and shall add despisers in men, that is, shall multiply despisers of God among men.
29 To whom is woe? to whose father is woe? to whom be chidings? to whom be ditches? to whom be wounds without cause? to whom is putting out of eyes?
30 Whether not to them, that dwell in wine, and study to drink up all of cups?
31 Behold thou not the wine, when it sparkleth, when the colour thereof shineth in a glass cup. It entereth sweetly,

Proverbs 23:10-31 in Wycliffe's Bible with Modern Spelling (Enhanced)

10 Touch thou not the terms, (or the boundary stones, of the property) of little children; and enter thou not into the field of fatherless and motherless children.
11 For the neighbour of them is strong, and he shall deem their cause against thee. (For their Friend is strong, and he shall judge their case against thee.)
12 Thine heart enter to teaching, and thine ears to the words of knowing. (Let thy heart draw close to instruction, and thy ears to words of knowledge.)
13 Do not thou withdraw chastising, (or discipline), from a child; for though thou smitest him with a rod, he shall not die.
14 Thou shalt smite him with a rod, and thou shalt deliver his soul from hell. (Thou shalt strike him with a rod, and so thou shalt rescue his soul from Sheol, or from the land of the dead, or from hell itself.)
15 My son, if thy soul is wise, mine heart shall have joy with thee; (My son, if thou be wise, my heart shall have joy over thee;)
16 and my reins shall make full out joy, when thy lips speak rightful thing(s).
17 (Let) Thine heart follow not sinners; but be thou in the dread of the Lord all day (or but be thou in the fear of the Lord or with reverence for the Lord all day long).
18 For thou shalt have hope at the last, and thine abiding shall not be done away.
19 My son, hear thou, and be wise, and (ad)dress thy soul in the way (or and direct thy soul to the right way).
20 Do not thou be in the feasts of drinkers, neither in the oft eatings of them, that bring together fleshes to eat. (Do not thou be at the feasts of drinkers, nor at the oft eatings of those who bring much meat to eat.)
21 For men giving attention to drinks, and giving morsels together, shall be wasted, and napping shall be clothed with clothes rent. (For those giving attention to drinks, and giving morsels to each other, shall be wasted, or destroyed, and their napping shall eventually clothe them with torn clothes.)
22 Hear thy father, that begat thee, (or Listen to thy father, who begat thee); and despise not thy mother, when she is eld.
23 Buy thou truth, and do not thou sell (off) wisdom, and doctrine, and understanding.
24 The father of a just man joyeth full out with joy; he that begat a wise man, shall be glad in him. (The father of a righteous person rejoiceth with great joy; he who begat someone who is wise, shall take much pleasure, or pride, in him.)
25 Thy father and thy mother have joy, and he that begat thee, make full out joy. (So let thy father and thy mother have joy over thee, and let she who bare thee, rejoice.)
26 My son, give thine heart to me, and thine eyes keep my ways.
27 For a whore is a deep ditch, and an alien woman, is a strait pit. (For a whore is a deep ditch, and a woman whom thou hath been intimate with, but who is not thy wife, is a narrow pit.)
28 She setteth ambush in the way, as a thief, (or She setteth ambush on the way, like a thief); and shall add despisers in men, that is, (she) shall multiply (the) despisers of God among men.
29 To whom is woe? to whose father is woe? to whom be chidings? (or to whom be arguments?) to whom be ditches? to whom be wounds without cause? to whom is putting out of eyes?
30 Whether not to them, that dwell in wine, and study to drink up all of (the) cups? (Whether not to those, who live in wine, and endeavour to drink up every last drop from the cup?)
31 Behold thou not the wine (or Look thou not upon the wine), when it sparkleth, when the colour thereof shineth in a glass cup. It entereth sweetly,

Proverbs 23:10-31 in Young's Literal Translation

10 Remove not a border of olden times, And into fields of the fatherless enter not,
11 For their Redeemer is strong, He doth plead their cause with thee.
12 Bring in to instruction thy heart, And thine ear to sayings of knowledge.
13 Withhold not from a youth chastisement, When thou smitest him with a rod he dieth not.
14 Thou with a rod smitest him, And his soul from Sheol thou deliverest.
15 My son, if thy heart hath been wise, My heart rejoiceth, even mine,
16 And my reins exult when thy lips speak uprightly.
17 Let not thy heart be envious at sinners, But — in the fear of Jehovah all the day.
18 For, is there a posterity? Then thy hope is not cut off.
19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, And make happy in the way thy heart,
20 Be not thou among quaffers of wine, Among gluttonous ones of flesh,
21 For the quaffer and glutton become poor, And drowsiness clotheth with rags.
22 Hearken to thy father, who begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she hath become old.
23 Truth buy, and sell not, Wisdom, and instruction, and understanding,
24 The father of the righteous rejoiceth greatly, The begetter of the wise rejoiceth in him.
25 Rejoice doth thy father and thy mother, Yea, she that bare thee is joyful.
26 Give, my son, thy heart to me, And let thine eyes watch my ways.
27 For a harlot is a deep ditch, And a strange woman is a strait pit.
28 She also, as catching prey, lieth in wait, And the treacherous among men she increaseth.
29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? Who hath contentions? who hath plaint? Who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes?
30 Those tarrying by the wine, Those going in to search out mixed wine.
31 See not wine when it showeth itself red, When it giveth in the cup its colour, It goeth up and down through the upright.
