John 5:2-22 in American Standard Version (1901)

2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porches.
3 In these lay a multitude of them that were sick, blind, halt, withered.
5 And a certain man was there, who had been thirty and eight years in his infirmity.
6 When Jesus saw him lying, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wouldest thou be made whole?
7 The sick man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
8 Jesus saith unto him, Arise, take up thy bed, and walk.
9 And straightway the man was made whole, and took up his bed and walked. Now it was the sabbath on that day.
10 So the Jews said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath, and it is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed.
11 But he answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
12 They asked him, Who is the man that said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?
13 But he that was healed knew not who it was; for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in the place.
14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing befall thee.
15 The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him whole.
16 And for this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath.
17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh even until now, and I work.

John 5:2-22 in God's Living Word

2 Near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem, there is a pool, which is called Bethesda in Hebrew. It’s surrounded by five covered colonnades.
3 In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, or paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water,
4 for an angel went down from time to time into the pool and stirred up the water. Whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease that person had.
5 A certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years.
6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been sick for a long time, He asked him, “Do you want to be made well?”
7 The sick man answered, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I’m coming, another steps down before me.”
8 Jesus told him, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk.”
9 Immediately, the man was made well, took up his mat, and walked. That was on the Sabbath day.
10 Therefore the Jews were telling him who was cured, “It’s the Sabbath, and it isn’t legal for you to carry your mat.”
11 He answered them, “He who made me well told me, ‘Take up your mat and walk.’”
12 Then they asked him, “Who told you to ‘Take up your mat and walk’?”
13 The man who had been healed didn’t know who it was, because Jesus had disappeared into the crowd.
14 Later, Jesus found him in the temple and told him, “See, you have been made well! Don’t sin any more, so that nothing worse happens to you.”
15 The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
16 For this reason, the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.
17 Jesus answered them, “My Father is still working, so I am working, too.”
18 Because of this, the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him. Not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
19 Then Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless He sees the Father do it, for whatever He does, the Son does likewise.
20 The Father loves the Son, and shows Him everything that He Himself does. He will show Him even greater works than these, that you may marvel.

John 5:2-22 in Translation for Translators

2 At one of the gates into the city called the Sheep Gate, there is a pool. In our language we call it Bethzatha. Around the pool were five open areas with roofs over them.
3 Many people were lying there. They were people who were blind, lame, or paralyzed.
5 One of those who was there had been paralyzed for thirty-eight years.
6 Jesus saw him lying there and found out that the man had been like that for a long time. He said to the man, “Do you want to become well?”
7 The paralyzed man replied to him, “ Yes, sir, I want to get well, but there is no one to help me get down into the pool when the water is stirred {stirs}. While I am trying to get to the pool, someone else always gets there before me.”
8 Jesus said to him, “Get up! Then pick up your mat and walk!”
9 The man immediately was healed. He picked up his mat and started walking! The day on which this happened was a Jewish day of rest.
10 So the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “Today is ◄the Sabbath/our rest day►, and in our Jewish laws it is written that people should not work on our ◄ Sabbath/rest day►, so you should not be carrying your mat!”
11 The man replied to them, “The man who healed me, he himself said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk!’”
12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick it up and walk!’?”
13 But since Jesus had disappeared in the crowd without telling the man his name, the man did not know who it was who had healed him.
14 Later, Jesus found the man in the Temple courtyard. He told the man his name, and said to him, “Listen! You are healed! So stop sinning! If you do not stop sinning, something will happen to you that will be worse than the illness you had before!”
15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders SYN that it was Jesus who had healed him.
16 So the Jewish leaders SYN started to harass Jesus, because Jesus was doing these things ◄on the Sabbath/on the Jewish rest day►.
17 Then Jesus replied to them, “My Father has always been working every day, including ◄ the Sabbath/the day of rest►, up until now. I am doing the same thing!”
18 The Jewish leaders SYN considered that he was disobeying their rules about ◄the Sabbath/the day of rest►, and that by saying that God was his Father, he was making himself equal with God. And they considered that both these things were grounds for killing him. So they tried even harder to find a way to kill him.
19 Jesus replied to them by saying, “You need to know this: I can do nothing by my own authority. I do only the kind of things that I see my Father doing. Whatever kinds of things my Father is doing, those are the things I am doing.
20 My Father loves me, and he shows me everything that he is doing. He will show me the miracles that he wants me to do that will be greater than the ones that you have already seen me do, so that you may be amazed.
21 For example, just like my Father causes people who have died to become alive again, I will give eternal life to everyone that I want to.
22 Furthermore, my Father is not the one who judges people concerning their sins. Instead, he has given to me the work of judging people,

2 Now in Jerusalem near the sheep-market there is a public bath which in Hebrew is named Beth-zatha. It has five doorways.
3 In these doorways there were a great number of people with different diseases: some unable to see, some without the power of walking, some with wasted bodies.
5 One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years.
6 When Jesus saw him there on the floor it was clear to him that he had been now a long time in that condition, and so he said to the man, Is it your desire to get well?
7 The ill man said in answer, Sir, I have nobody to put me into the bath when the water is moving; and while I am on the way down some other person gets in before me.
8 Jesus said to him, Get up, take your bed and go.
9 And the man became well straight away, and took up his bed and went. Now that day was the Sabbath.
10 So the Jews said to the man who had been made well, It is the Sabbath; and it is against the law for you to take up your bed.
11 He said to them, But he who made me well, said to me, Take up your bed and go.
12 Then they put to him the question: Who is the man who said to you, Take it up and go?
13 Now he who had been made well had no knowledge who it was, Jesus having gone away because of the number of people who were in that place.
14 After a time Jesus came across him in the Temple and said to him, See, you are well and strong; do no more sin for fear a worse thing comes to you.
15 The man went away and said to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
16 And for this reason the Jews were turned against Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.
17 But his answer was: My Father is still working even now, and so I am working.
18 For this cause the Jews had an even greater desire to put Jesus to death, because not only did he not keep the Sabbath but he said God was his Father, so making himself equal with God.
19 So Jesus made answer and said, Truly I say to you, The Son is not able to do anything himself; he is able to do only what he sees the Father doing; whatever the Father does the Son does it in the same way.
20 For the Father has love for the Son and lets him see everything which he does: and he will let him see greater works than these so that you may be full of wonder.

John 5:2-22 in The New Testament with Commentary

2 Now in Jerusalem, by the Sheep Gate, there is a pool called Bethesda, in Hebrew, which has five porches.
3 In them a large number of sick people were lying—blind, lame, paralyzed—waiting for the moving of the water;
4 because an angel would go down from time to time into the pool and stir up the water—then the first one to get in after the stirring of the water became well of whatever disease that was holding him.
5 Now there was a certain man there who had been sick for 38 years.
6 Seeing this man lying there and knowing that he had already been sick a long time, Jesus says to him, “Do you want to get well?”
7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to throw me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming another gets in before me.”
8 Jesus says to him, “Get up, pick up your pallet and walk!”
9 Immediately the man became well and picked up his pallet and started to walk!
10 But that day was a Sabbath, so the Jews said to the one who had been healed: “It's the Sabbath! You aren't allowed to carry the pallet.”
11 He answered them: “The one who made me well—He said to me, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk.’ ”
12 So they asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk’?”
13 But the man who was cured did not know who it was, because Jesus had disappeared, there being a crowd in the place.
14 After these things Jesus found him in the temple and said to him: “See, you are well. Don't sin any more, so that something worse doesn't happen to you.”
15 The man went off and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
16 So because of this the Jews began persecuting Jesus and trying to kill Him, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.
17 But Jesus answered them, “Until now, my Father works, I also work.”
18 So because of this they wanted to kill Him all the more, because He was not only breaking the Sabbath but was even saying that God was His own Father, making Himself equal with God!
19 Then Jesus answered and said to them: “Most assuredly I say to you, the Son is not able to do anything from Himself, except something He sees the Father doing; because whatever things He does, precisely these the Son also does.
20 For the Father loves the Son and shows Him everything that He Himself is doing; and He will show Him greater works than these, so that you may marvel.
21 Now just as the Father raises the dead and gives life, just so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes.

2 Now near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem is a pool called Bethzatha in Hebrew, with five porches beside it.
3 Crowds of sick people were lying in these porches—those who were blind, lame, or paralyzed.
5 One man who was there had been sick for thirty-eight years. Jesus looked at him, knowing he had been lying there for long time, and asked him,
6 “Do you want to be healed?”
7 “Sir,” the sick man answered, “I don't have anyone to help me get into the pool when the water is stirred. While I'm trying to get there, someone always gets in before me.”
8 “Stand up, pick up your mat, and start walking!” Jesus told him.
9 Immediately the man was healed. He picked up his mat and started walking. Now the day that this happened was the Sabbath.
10 So the Jews said to the man who'd been healed, “This is the Sabbath! It's against the law to carry a mat!”
11 “The man who healed me told me to pick up my mat and start walking,” he replied.
12 “Who's this person who told you to carry your mat and walk?” they asked.
13 However, the man who'd been healed didn't know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the surrounding crowd.
14 Later on Jesus found the man in the Temple, and told him, “Look, now you've been healed. So stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.”
15 The man went and told the Jews it was Jesus who had healed him.
16 So the Jews started to harass Jesus because he was doing things on the Sabbath.
17 But Jesus told them, “My Father is still working, and so am I.”
18 This was why the Jews tried even harder to kill him, for not only did he break the Sabbath but also called God his Father, making himself equal with God.
19 Jesus explained to them, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can only do what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does the Son does as well.
20 For the Father loves the Son, and reveals to him everything he does; and the Father will show to him even more incredible things that will completely amaze you.
21 For just as the Father gives life to those he resurrects from the dead, in the same way the Son also gives life to those that he wants.
22 The Father judges no one. He has given to the Son all the authority to judge,

3 In these lay a great multitude of impotent persons, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.

15 The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.

2 And in Jerusalem is a washing place (or a pool), that in Hebrew is called Bethesda, and (it) hath five porches. Forsooth at Jerusalem is a standing water of beasts (or a watering pool for beasts), that in Hebrew is called Bethesda, having five little gates, or entries.
3 In these lay a great multitude of sick men, blind, crooked (or lame), and dry (or withered), abiding (or waiting for) the moving or the stirring of the water.
4 For the angel of the Lord came down (at) certain times into the standing water (or into the pool), and the water was moved; and he that first came down into the cistern, after the moving of the water, was made whole (or was healed) of whatever sickness he was held (by).
5 And a man was there, having eight and thirty years in his sickness.
6 And when Jesus had seen him lying (there), and had known, that he had much time (there), he saith to him, Wilt thou be made whole?
7 The sick man answered to him, Lord, I have no man, (so) that when the water is moved or (it) is troubled, to put me into the cistern (or into the pool); for while I come, another goeth down before me.
8 Jesus saith to him, Rise up, take thy bed, and go. (Jesus said to him, Get up, pick up thy bed, and go.)
9 And anon the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and went forth. And it was sabbath in that day. (And at once the man was healed, and picked up his bed, and went forth. And that day was the Sabbath.)
10 Therefore the Jews said to him that was made whole, It is (the) sabbath, it is not leaveful to thee, to take away thy bed. (And so the Jews said to him who was healed, It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.)
11 He answered to them, He that made me whole, said to me, Take (up) thy bed, and go. (He answered to them, He who healed me, said to me, Pick up thy bed, and go.)
12 Therefore they asked him, What man is that or Who is that man, that said to thee, Take up thy bed, and go? (or Who said to thee, Pick up thy bed, and go?)
13 But he that was made whole, wist not who it was, (or But he who was healed, did not know who it was). And Jesus (had) bowed away from the people, that was set in the place.
14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, Lo! thou art made whole, (or Behold! thou art healed); now do not thou do sin or now do not thou sin, lest any worse thing befall to thee.
15 (Then) That man went, and told to the Jews, that it was Jesus that made him whole.
16 Therefore the Jews pursued Jesus, for he did this thing in the sabbath. (And so the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he did this miracle on the Sabbath.)
17 And Jesus answered to them, My Father worketh till now, and I work.
18 Therefore the Jews sought more to slay him, for not only he brake the sabbath, but he said that God was his Father, and made him(self) even (or equal) to God.
19 Therefore Jesus answered, and said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, (or Truly, I tell you the truth), the Son may not of himself do anything, no but that thing that he seeth the Father doing; for whatever things he doeth, the Son doeth in like manner those things.
20 For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth to him all (the) things that he doeth; and he shall show to him greater works than these, (so) that ye wonder.
21 For as the Father raiseth dead men, and quickeneth (them), so the Son quickeneth whom he will. (For as the Father raiseth the dead, and giveth them life, so the Son giveth life to whomever he desireth.)
22 For neither the Father judgeth any man, but hath given every doom to the Son, (For the Father judgeth no one, but hath given every judgement to the Son,)

John 5:2-22 in Young's Literal Translation

2 and there is in Jerusalem by the sheep -gate a pool that is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porches,
3 in these were lying a great multitude of the ailing, blind, lame, withered, waiting for the moving of the water,
4 for a messenger at a set time was going down in the pool, and was troubling the water, the first then having gone in after the troubling of the water, became whole of whatever sickness he was held.
5 and there was a certain man there being in ailment thirty and eight years,
6 him Jesus having seen lying, and having known that he is already a long time, he saith to him, 'Dost thou wish to become whole?'
7 The ailing man answered him, 'Sir, I have no man, that, when the water may be troubled, he may put me into the pool, and while I am coming, another doth go down before me.'
8 Jesus saith to him, 'Rise, take up thy couch, and be walking;'
9 and immediately the man became whole, and he took up his couch, and was walking, and it was a sabbath on that day,
10 the Jews then said to him that hath been healed, 'It is a sabbath; it is not lawful to thee to take up the couch.'
11 He answered them, 'He who made me whole — that one said to me, Take up thy couch, and be walking;'
12 they questioned him, then, 'Who is the man who is saying to thee, Take up thy couch and be walking?'
13 But he that was healed had not known who he is, for Jesus did move away, a multitude being in the place.
14 After these things, Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said to him, 'Lo, thou hast become whole; sin no more, lest something worse may happen to thee.'
15 The man went away, and told the Jews that it is Jesus who made him whole,
16 and because of this were the Jews persecuting Jesus, and seeking to kill him, because these things he was doing on a sabbath.
17 And Jesus answered them, 'My Father till now doth work, and I work;'
18 because of this, then, were the Jews seeking the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the sabbath, but he also called God his own Father, making himself equal to God.
19 Jesus therefore responded and said to them, 'Verily, verily, I say to you, The Son is not able to do anything of himself, if he may not see the Father doing anything; for whatever things He may do, these also the Son in like manner doth;
20 for the Father doth love the Son, and doth shew to him all things that He himself doth; and greater works than these He will shew him, that ye may wonder.
