John 5:1-6 in English

¹ After these things there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

² Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porches.

³ In these lay a multitude of them that were sick, blind, halt, withered.

⁵ And a certain man was there, who had been thirty and eight years in his infirmity.

⁶ When Jesus saw him lying, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wouldest thou be made whole?

¹ After this, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

² Near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem, there is a pool, which is called Bethesda in Hebrew. It’s surrounded by five covered colonnades.

³ In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, or paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water,

⁴ for an angel went down from time to time into the pool and stirred up the water. Whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease that person had.

⁵ A certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years.

⁶ When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been sick for a long time, He asked him, “Do you want to be made well?”

¹ After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

² Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.

³ In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.

⁴ For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

⁵ And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

² At one of the gates into the city called the Sheep Gate, there is a pool. In our language we call it Bethzatha. Around the pool were five open areas with roofs over them.

³ Many people were lying there. They were people who were blind, lame, or paralyzed.

⁵ One of those who was there had been paralyzed for thirty-eight years.

⁶ Jesus saw him lying there and found out that the man had been like that for a long time. He said to the man, “Do you want to become well?”

³ In these doorways there were a great number of people with different diseases: some unable to see, some without the power of walking, some with wasted bodies.

⁵ One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years.

⁶ When Jesus saw him there on the floor it was clear to him that he had been now a long time in that condition, and so he said to the man, Is it your desire to get well?

¹ After these things was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

² Now there is in Jerusalem, at the sheepgate, a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches.

³ In these lay a multitude of sick, blind, lame, withered, awaiting the moving of the water.

⁴ For an angel descended at a certain season in the pool and troubled the water. Whoever therefore first went in after the troubling of the water became well, whatever disease he laboured under.

⁵ But there was a certain man there who had been suffering under his infirmity thirty and eight years.

⁶ Jesus seeing this man lying there, and knowing that he was in that state now a great length of time, says to him, Wouldest thou become well?

¹ After these things was a festival day of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

² Now there is at Jerusalem a pond, called Probatica, which in Hebrew is named Bethsaida, having five porches.

³ In these lay a great multitude of sick, of blind, of lame, of withered; waiting for the moving of the water.

⁴ And an angel of the Lord descended at certain times into the pond; and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pond after the motion of the water, was made whole, of whatsoever infirmity he lay under.

⁵ And there was a certain man there, that had been eight and thirty years under his infirmity.

⁶ Him when Jesus had seen lying, and knew that he had been now a long time, he saith to him: Wilt thou be made whole?

⁴ For an angel from time to time descended into the pool and stirred up the water; therefore the first one having gone in after the stirring up of the water, became well of whatever disease he was suffering from.

⁵ Now there was a certain man there who had an ailment for thirty-eight years.

⁶ When Jesus saw this man lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you wish to become well?”

³ In them a large number of sick people were lying—blind, lame, paralyzed—waiting for the moving of the water;

⁴ because an angel would go down from time to time into the pool and stir up the water—then the first one to get in after the stirring of the water became well of whatever disease that was holding him.

⁵ Now there was a certain man there who had been sick for 38 years.

⁶ Seeing this man lying there and knowing that he had already been sick a long time, Jesus says to him, “Do you want to get well?”

¹ After this, there was a Jewish festival so Jesus went to Jerusalem.

² Now near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem is a pool called Bethzatha in Hebrew, with five porches beside it.

³ Crowds of sick people were lying in these porches—those who were blind, lame, or paralyzed.

⁵ One man who was there had been sick for thirty-eight years. Jesus looked at him, knowing he had been lying there for long time, and asked him,

⁶ “Do you want to be healed?”

¹ After that, there was a feast of the Iewes, and Iesus went vp to Hierusalem.

² And there is at Hierusalem by the place of the sheepe, a poole called in Ebrew Bethesda, hauing fiue porches:

³ In the which lay a great multitude of sicke folke, of blinde, halte, and withered, wayting for the mouing of the water.

⁴ For an Angel went downe at a certaine season into the poole, and troubled the water: whosoeuer then first, after the stirring of the water, stepped in, was made whole of whatsoeuer disease he had.

⁵ And a certaine man was there, which had bene diseased eight and thirtie yeeres.

⁶ When Iesus sawe him lie, and knew that he nowe long time had bene diseased, he saide vnto him, Wilt thou be made whole?

³ in which laye a greate multitude of sicke folke of blinde halt and wyddered waytinge for the movinge of the water.

⁴ For an angell wet doune at a certayne ceason into the pole and troubled the water. Whosoever then fyrst after the steringe of the water stepped in was made whoale of what soever disease he had.

⁵ And a certayne man was theare which had bene diseased .xxxviii. yeares.

⁶ When Iesus sawe him lye and knewe that he now longe tyme had bene diseased he sayde vnto him. Wilt thou be made whoale?

⁴ For the angel of the Lord came down certain times into the standing water, and the water was moved; and he that first came down into the cistern, after the moving of the water, was made whole of whatever sickness he was held.

⁵ And a man was there, having eight and thirty years in his sickness.

⁶ And when Jesus had seen him lying, and had known, that he had much time, he saith to him, Wilt thou be made whole?

³ In these lay a greet multitude of sike men, blynde, crokid, and drie, abidynge the mouyng of the watir.

⁴ For the aungel `of the Lord cam doun certeyne tymes in to the watir, and the watir was moued; and he that first cam doun in to the sisterne, aftir the mouynge of the watir, was maad hool of what euer sijknesse he was holdun.

⁵ And a man was there, hauynge eiyte and thritti yeer in his sikenesse.

⁶ And whanne Jhesus hadde seyn hym liggynge, and hadde knowun, that he hadde myche tyme, he seith to hym, Wolt thou be maad hool?

⁴ for a messenger at a set time was going down in the pool, and was troubling the water, the first then having gone in after the troubling of the water, became whole of whatever sickness he was held.

⁵ and there was a certain man there being in ailment thirty and eight years,

⁶ him Jesus having seen lying, and having known that he is already a long time, he saith to him, 'Dost thou wish to become whole?'
