John 3:7-29 in English

⁷ Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born anew.

⁸ The wind bloweth where it will, and thou hearest the voice thereof, but knowest not whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

⁹ Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou the teacher of Israel, and understandest not these things?

¹¹ Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that which we know, and bear witness of that which we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.

¹² If I told you earthly things and ye believe not, how shall ye believe if I tell you heavenly things?

¹³ And no one hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended out of heaven, even the Son of man, who is in heaven.

¹⁴ And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up;

¹⁵ that whosoever believeth may in him have eternal life.

¹⁶ For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life.

¹⁷ For God sent not the Son into the world to judge the world; but that the world should be saved through him.

¹⁸ He that believeth on him is not judged: he that believeth not hath been judged already, because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God.

¹⁹ And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil.

²⁰ For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be reproved.

²¹ But he that doeth the truth cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest, that they have been wrought in God.

²² After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judæa; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.

²³ And John also was baptizing in Ænon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.

²⁴ For John was not yet cast into prison.

²⁵ There arose therefore a questioning on the part of John’s disciples with a Jew about purifying.

²⁶ And they came unto John, and said to him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond the Jordan, to whom thou hast borne witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.

²⁷ John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it have been given him from heaven.

²⁸ Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but, that I am sent before him.

²⁹ He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, that standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is made full.

⁷ Don’t marvel that I told you, ‘You must be born again.’

⁸ The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but can’t tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

⁹ Nicodemus asked Him, “How can these things be?”

¹⁰ “Are you Israel’s teacher,” asked Jesus, “and yet you don’t understand these things?

¹¹ Most assuredly, I tell you, we speak what we know and testify what we have seen, and you don’t receive our witness.

¹² If I have told you earthly things and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

¹³ No one has ever gone up into Heaven except the one who came from Heaven — the Son of Man.

¹⁴ Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,

¹⁵ that everyone who believes in Him should not die, but have eternal life.

¹⁶ For God so sincerely loved the world that He gave His only born Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

¹⁷ For God didn’t send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.

¹⁸ Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever doesn’t believe is condemned already because that person has not believed in the name of God’s only Son.

¹⁹ This is the condemnation, that light has come into the world, but people sincerely loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

²⁰ Everyone who practices evil hates the light, and doesn’t come to the light, for fear that their deeds will be exposed.

²¹ Whoever practices the truth comes to the light to show clearly that their deeds have been done with God.”

²² After this, Jesus and His disciples went out into the countryside of Judea, where He remained with them, and baptized.

²³ John was also baptizing at Aenon, near Salim, because there was plenty of water there, and people kept coming to be baptized.

²⁴ John had not yet been thrown into prison.

²⁵ There were some questions between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about purification.

²⁶ They came to John and told him, “Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, that you have testified about — look, He is baptizing, and everyone is flocking to Him!”

²⁷ John replied, “A man can receive nothing, unless it’s given to him from Heaven.

²⁸ You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I’m not the Christ, but I have been sent ahead of Him.’

²⁹ The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and rejoices when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. This joy of mine is now made complete.

⁷ Do not be surprised about my telling you that you must be born again and have a new life from God.

⁸ Let me illustrate: The wind blows wherever it wants to blow. You hear its sound, but you do not know where the wind comes from or where it is going. Similarly, those who do not know God cannot understand/control/predict how people are born again as a result of what God's spirit does.”

⁹ Nicodemus replied to him, “How can that happen?”

¹⁰ Jesus replied to him, “You (sg) are a well-known teacher among us Israelite people, so ◄I am surprised that you do not understand these things!/how is it that you do not understand these things?► RHQ

¹¹ Listen to this carefully: ◄My disciples and I/I► tell you (pl) about the things that my disciples and I have seen and know are true, but you (pl) do not admit that what my disciples and I are saying is true.

¹² I have told you about the things that happen here on earth that are true, but you (pl) do not believe me. So if I tell you (sg) about things that happen in heaven, ◄you certainly will not believe me!/how will you believe me?► RHQ

¹³ I am the only one who has gone up to heaven; no one else has gone up there. I am also the one who came down from heaven. So I know what happens there.

¹⁴ Long ago when the Israelite people rebelled against God in the desolate area, God sent poisonous snakes to bite them. But when Moses lifted up on a pole the model of a poisonous snake, everyone who looked at that model was healed from their snake bites. Similarly, even though I am the one who came from heaven, some day people will lift me up on a cross to kill me.

¹⁵ As a result, everyone who believes/trusts in me will have eternal life.”

¹⁶ God loved us people MTY in the world so much that he gave his only Son as a sacrifice for us, in order that everyone who believes in him would not be separated from God forever. Instead, they would have eternal life.

¹⁷ When God sent his Son into the world, his purpose was not to punish the people in MTY the world for their sins. Instead, he sent him in order that they might be saved by him {he might save them} from being ◄ guilty/punished► for their sins.

¹⁸ Everyone who trusts in his Son, God says that they will not be punished {that he will not punish them}. But God has already said that everyone who does not trust in his Son will be punished {that he will punish everyone who does not trust in his Son}, because they have not trusted in what his only Son has done for them.

¹⁹ The one who was like a light MET to reveal God's truth to us came into the world. But people loved doing what was evil, like darkness MET is evil, instead of loving the one who was like a light. That is the reason God will judge people and condemn them.

²⁰ Everyone who does what is evil hates the one who is like a light, and they will not come to the one who is like a light, because it would be shown { the one who is like a light would show} that their deeds are evil, and he would rebuke them.

²¹ But those who live according to God's truth come to the one who is like a light, in order that it may be seen clearly {that people may see clearly} that the things they have done, they did them because they have depended on God.

²² Some time later Jesus and we disciples went to Judea district. He stayed with us there and directed us as we baptized people.

²³ John the Baptizer was also baptizing people. He was doing that at Aenon village near Salim town in Samaria district, because there were many springs in that area. Many people kept coming to John and were being baptized {he was baptizing them}.

²⁴ That happened before John was put {they put John} in prison.

²⁵ Then some of John's disciples and a certain Jew started arguing about the Jewish rituals of washing things to make them acceptable to God.

²⁶ Then those disciples went to John and said to him, “Teacher, do you remember the man who was with you when you were baptizing people on the other side of the Jordan River? He is the one you were telling us about. Well, now he is baptizing people, and many people are going to him instead of coming to us!”

²⁷ John replied, “A person can become important only if God MTY permits it. So we should not be jealous about Jesus being popular!

²⁸ You yourselves can verify what I said. I told you that I am not ◄the Messiah/God's promised king►. Instead, I told you that I was sent {that God sent me} to prepare the way for him.

²⁹ Let me illustrate MET: He is like a ◄ bridegroom/man who is being married►, and I am like his friend. The friend of the bridegroom stands there and waits for him to come. That friend is very happy when he hears the bridegroom's voice when he arrives. Similarly, I am very happy about what you have told me.

⁸ The wind goes where its pleasure takes it, and the sound of it comes to your ears, but you are unable to say where it comes from and where it goes: so it is with everyone whose birth is from the Spirit.

⁹ And Nicodemus said to him, How is it possible for these things to be?

¹⁰ And Jesus, answering, said, Are you the teacher of Israel and have no knowledge of these things?

¹¹ Truly, I say to you, We say that of which we have knowledge; we give witness of what we have seen; and you do not take our witness to be true.

¹² If you have no belief when my words are about the things of earth, how will you have belief if my words are about the things of heaven?

¹³ And no one has ever gone up to heaven but he who came down from heaven, the Son of man.

¹⁴ As the snake was lifted up by Moses in the waste land, even so it is necessary for the Son of man to be lifted up:

¹⁵ So that whoever has faith may have in him eternal life.

¹⁶ For God had such love for the world that he gave his only Son, so that whoever has faith in him may not come to destruction but have eternal life.

¹⁷ God did not send his Son into the world to be judge of the world; he sent him so that the world might have salvation through him.

¹⁸ The man who has faith in him does not come up to be judged; but he who has no faith in him has been judged even now, because he has no faith in the name of the only Son of God.

¹⁹ And this is the test by which men are judged: the light has come into the world and men have more love for the dark than for the light, because their acts are evil.

²⁰ The light is hated by everyone whose acts are evil and he does not come to the light for fear that his acts will be seen.

²¹ But he whose life is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his acts have been done by the help of God.

²² After these things Jesus and his disciples went into the land of Judaea, and there he was with them for some time, giving baptism.

²³ Now John was then giving baptism at Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there; and people came and were given baptism.

²⁴ For at this time John had not been put into prison.

²⁵ Then a question came up between John's disciples and a Jew about washing.

²⁶ And they went to John and said to him, Rabbi, the man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan, the man to whom you gave witness, is now giving baptism, and everyone is going to him.

²⁷ And this was John's answer: A man is unable to have anything if it is not given to him from heaven.

²⁸ You yourselves give witness that I said, I am not the Christ. What I said was, I am sent before the Christ.

²⁹ He who has the bride is the husband: but the husband's friend, whose place is by his side and whose ears are open to him, is full of joy because of the husband's voice: such is my joy, and it is complete.

⁷ Do not wonder that I said to thee, It is needful that ye should be born anew.

¹⁰ Jesus answered, and said to him: Art thou a master in Israel, and knowest not these things?

¹¹ Amen, amen I say to thee, that we speak what we know, and we testify what we have seen, and you receive not our testimony.

¹² If I have spoken to you earthly things, and you believe not; how will you believe, if I shall speak to you heavenly things?

¹³ And no man hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven.

¹⁴ And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up:

¹⁵ That whosoever believeth in him, may not perish; but may have life everlasting.

¹⁶ For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting.

¹⁷ For God sent not his Son into the world, to judge the world, but that the world may be saved by him.

¹⁸ He that believeth in him is not judged. But he that doth not believe, is already judged: because he believeth not in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

¹⁹ And this is the judgment: because the light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than the light: for their works were evil.

²⁰ For every one that doth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, that his works may not be reproved.

²¹ But he that doth truth, cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest, because they are done in God.

²² After these things Jesus and his disciples came into the land of Judea: and there he abode with them, and baptized.

²³ And John also was baptizing in Ennon near Salim; because there was much water there; and they came and were baptized.

²⁴ For John was not yet cast into prison.

²⁵ And there arose a question between some of John’s disciples and the Jews concerning purification:

²⁶ And they came to John, and said to him: Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond the Jordan, to whom thou gavest testimony, behold he baptizeth, and all men come to him.

²⁷ John answered, and said: A man cannot receive any thing, unless it be given him from heaven.

²⁸ You yourselves do bear me witness, that I said, I am not Christ, but that I am sent before him.

²⁹ He that hath the bride, is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, who standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth with joy because of the bridegroom’s voice. This my joy therefore is fulfilled.

⁷ Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’

⁸ The wind blows where it wills, and you hear its sound, but you do not know from where it comes and where it goes. So is everyone who has been born of the Spirit.”

⁹ Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?”

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?

²⁵ Then there came to be a dispute between John's disciples and a Jew about purification.

²⁶ And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified—behold, this Man is baptizing, and all men are coming to Him!”

²⁷ John answered and said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven.

²⁸ You yourselves bear witness that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah,’ but, ‘I have been sent before Him.’

²⁹ He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the voice of the bridegroom. Therefore my joy has been fulfilled.

⁷ Do not be perplexed that I said to you, ‘You (pl) need to be begotten from Above.’

⁸ The wind blows where it wishes, and you (sg) hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who has been begotten by the Spirit.”

⁹ Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?”

¹⁶ Because God loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son, so that everyone who believes into Him should not be wasted, but should have eternal life.

¹⁷ For God did not send His Son into the world in order to condemn the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him.

¹⁸ The one believing into Him is not condemned, but the one not believing has already been condemned, because he has not believed into the name of the only begotten Son of God.

¹⁹ “Now this is the basis for the condemning, that the Light has come into the world, but the people loved the darkness rather than the Light, because their deeds were malignant.

²⁰ For whoever practices evil hates the Light and does not come to the Light, so that his deeds may not be exposed.

²¹ But whoever does the truth comes to the Light so that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they are done in God.”

²² After these things Jesus, with His disciples, went into the Judean countryside, and there He spent time with them and baptized.

²³ Now John also was baptizing in Aenon, near Salem, because there was plenty of water there. And people were coming and being baptized;

²⁴ for John had not yet been thrown into prison.

²⁵ Then some of John's disciples had an argument with a Judean about purification.

²⁶ So they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, the One who was with you across the Jordan, about whom you have testified—well, here He is baptizing, and everyone is flocking to Him!”

²⁷ John answered and said: “A person can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from Heaven.

²⁸ You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent ahead of Him.’

²⁹ He who has the bride is the bridegroom, but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands by and hears him, has great joy at the bridegroom's voice. So this my joy has been fulfilled.

⁷ Don't be surprised at my telling you, ‘You must be reborn.’

⁸ The wind blows wherever it wants, and just as you hear the sound it makes, but don't know where it's coming from or where it's going, that's how it is for everyone who is born of the spirit.”

⁹ “How is this possible?” Nicodemus asked.

¹⁰ “You're a famous teacher in Israel, and yet you don't understand such things?” Jesus replied.

¹¹ “I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know and give evidence regarding what we have seen, but you refuse to accept our testimony.

¹² If you don't trust what I say when I tell you about earthly things, how would you ever trust what I say if I were to tell you about heavenly things?

¹³ No one has gone up to heaven, but the Son of man came down from heaven.

¹⁴ Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so the Son of man must be lifted up,

¹⁵ that everyone who trusts in him will have eternal life.

¹⁶ For God loved the world, and this is how: he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who trusts in him shouldn't die, but have eternal life.

¹⁷ God didn't send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

¹⁸ Those who trust in him are not condemned, while those who don't trust in him are condemned already because they didn't trust in the one and only Son of God.

¹⁹ This is how the decision is made: the light came to the world, but people loved the darkness rather than the light, for their actions were evil.

²⁰ All those who do evil hate the light and don't come into the light, because they don't want their actions to be exposed.

²¹ But those who do good come into the light, so that what God accomplishes in them can be revealed.”

²² After this Jesus and his disciples went into Judea and spent some time with the people, baptizing them.

²³ John was also baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water there and people kept coming to be baptized.

²⁴ (This was before John was imprisoned.)

²⁵ An argument developed between John's disciples and a Jew over ceremonial purification.

²⁶ They went to John and told him, “Rabbi, the man you were with on the other side of the Jordan River, the one you testified in support of—see, now he's baptizing, and everyone is going to him!”

²⁷ “No one receives anything unless they're given it from heaven,” John replied.

²⁸ “You yourselves can testify that I declared, ‘I'm not the Messiah. I've been sent to prepare his way.’

²⁹ The bridegroom is the one who has the bride! The best man waits, listening for the bridegroom, and is so happy when he hears the bridegroom's voice—in the same way my happiness is now complete.

⁷ Marueile not that I said to thee, Yee must be borne againe.

⁸ The winde bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it commeth, and whither it goeth: so is euery man that is borne of the Spirit.

⁹ Nicodemus answered, and said vnto him, Howe can these things be?

¹⁰ Iesus answered, and saide vnto him, Art thou a teacher of Israel, and knowest not these things?

¹¹ Verely, verely I say vnto thee, wee speake that we know, and testifie that we haue seene: but yee receiue not our witnesse.

¹² If when I tel you earthly things, ye beleeue not, howe should yee beleeue, if I shall tel you of heauenly things?

¹³ For no man ascendeth vp to heauen, but he that hath descended from heauen, that Sonne of man which is in heauen.

¹⁴ And as Moses lift vp the serpent in the wildernesse, so must that Sonne of man be lift vp,

¹⁵ That whosoeuer beleeueth in him, shoulde not perish, but haue eternall life.

²⁶ And they came vnto Iohn, and saide vnto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Iorden, to whom thou barest witnesse, behold, he baptizeth, and all men come to him.

²⁷ Iohn answered, and saide, A man can receiue nothing, except it be giuen him from heauen.

¹⁶ Human beings are very much in God's feelings. Because of that he gave his very own male child for them, so that the ones who habitually believe in him should not become worthless dregs, but should live for ever in his camp.

¹⁷ He did not send his son here for what's-it, to banish them from his presence for ever. He sent him for us, to rescue everybody!

¹⁸ Whoever believes in God's Son, he will not send him away. Everyone who does not believe in that sort of way stays in a really bad way forever, because they reject God's very own son.

¹⁹ This is how it works: The Light of God has come to us, BUT / in contrast, opposite of what one would expect but men love darkness, they want to do evil.

²⁰ Evil-doers hate the Light of God, they do not come to the Light of God, because of shame about the bad things they have done.

²¹ Everyone who habitually does good will come to the light of God, and others will see how God is working in and through them.

²⁵ There arose therefore a questioning on the part of John Yah is gracious’s disciples with some Jews Praisers about purification.

²⁶ They came to John Yah is gracious, and said to him, “Rabbi ·Teacher·, he who was with you beyond the Jordan Descender, to whom you have testified, behold, the same baptizes, and everyone is coming to him.”

²⁷ John Yah is gracious answered, “A man can receive nothing, unless it has been given him from heaven.

²⁸ You yourselves testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah Anointed one,’ but, ‘I have been sent before him.’

²⁹ He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. This, my joy, therefore is made full.

⁷ Marvayle not that I sayd to the ye must be boren a newe.

⁹ And Nicodemus answered and sayde vnto him: how can these thinges be?

¹¹ Verely verely I saye vnto the we speake that we knowe and testify that we have sene: and ye receave not oure witnes.

¹² Yf when I tell you erthely thinges ye beleve not: how shuld ye beleve yf I shall tell you of hevenly thinges?

¹³ And no man ascendeth vp to heaven but he that came doune from heaven that is to saye the sonne of man which is in heaven.

¹⁴ And as Moses lifte vp the serpent in the wyldernes even so must the sonne of man be lifte vp,

¹⁵ that none that beleveth in him perisshe: but have eternall lyfe.

¹⁶ For God so loveth the worlde that he hath geven his only sonne that none that beleve in him shuld perisshe: but shuld have everlastinge lyfe.

¹⁷ For God sent not his sonne into the worlde to condempne the worlde: but that the worlde through him might be saved.

¹⁸ He that beleveth on him shall not be condempned. But he that beleveth not is condempned all redy be cause he beleveth not in the name of the only sonne of God.

¹⁹ And this is the condempnacion: that light is come into the worlde and the me loved darcknes more then light because their dedes were evill.

²⁰ For every man that evyll doeth hateth the light: nether commeth to light lest his dedes shuld be reproved.

²¹ But he that doth truth commeth to the light that his dedes might be knowen how that they are wrought in God.

²² After these thinges cam Iesus and his disciples into the Iewes londe and ther he haunted with them and baptised.

²³ And Iohn also baptised in Enon besydes Salim because ther was moche water there and they came and were baptised.

²⁴ For Iohn was not yet cast into preson.

²⁵ And ther arose a question bitwene Iohns disciples and the Iewes about purifiynge.

²⁶ And they came vnto Iohn and sayde vnto him: Rabbi he that was with the beyonde Iordan to whom thou barest witnes. Beholde the same baptyseth and all me come to him.

²⁷ Iohn answered and sayde: a man can receave no thinge at all except it be geve him from heaven.

²⁸ Ye youre selves are witnesses how that I sayde: I am not Christ but am sent before him.

²⁹ He that hath the bryde is the brydegrome. But the frende of the brydegrome which stondeth by and heareth him reioyseth greately of the brydgromes voyce. Tis my ioye is fulfilled.

⁷ Do not be amazed that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'

⁸ The wind blows wherever it wishes; you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

⁹ Nicodemus replied and said to him, “How can these things be?”

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?

¹¹ Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak what we know, and we testify about what we have seen. Yet you do not accept our testimony.

¹² If I told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?

¹³ No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven—the Son of Man.

¹⁴ Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

¹⁵ so that all who believe in him may have eternal life.

¹⁶ For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

¹⁷ For God did not send the Son into the world in order to condemn the world, but in order to save the world through him.

¹⁸ He who believes in him is not condemned, but he who does not believe is already condemned because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God.

¹⁹ This is the reason for the judgment: The light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil.

²⁰ For everyone who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, so that his deeds will not be exposed.

²¹ However, he who practices the truth comes to the light so that it may be plainly seen that his deeds have been done in God.”

²² After this, Jesus and his disciples went into the land of Judea. There he spent some time with them and baptized.

²³ Now John was also baptizing in Aenon near to Salim because there was much water there. People were coming to him and were being baptized,

²⁴ for John had not yet been thrown in prison.

²⁵ Then there arose a dispute between some of John's disciples and a Jew about ceremonial washing.

²⁶ They went to John and said to him, “Rabbi, the one who was with you on the other side of the Jordan River, about whom you have testified, look, he is baptizing, and they are all going to him.”

²⁷ John replied, “A man cannot receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven.

²⁸ You yourselves can testify that I said, 'I am not the Christ,' but instead, 'I have been sent before him.'

²⁹ The bride belongs to the bridegroom. Now the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the voice of the bridegroom. This, then, is my joy made complete.

²⁸ Ye yourselves bear witnessing to me, that I said, I am not Christ, but that I am sent before him.

²⁹ He that hath a wife, is the husband or the spouse; but the friend of the spouse that standeth, and heareth him, joyeth with joy, for the voice of the spouse. Therefore in this thing my joy is fulfilled.

¹⁹ And this is the dom, for liyt cam in to the world, and men loueden more derknessis than liyt; for her werkes weren yuele.

²⁰ For ech man that doith yuele, hatith the liyt; and he cometh not to the liyt, that hise werkis be not repreued.

²¹ But he that doith treuthe, cometh to the liyt, that hise werkis be schewid, that thei ben don in God.

²² Aftir these thingis Jhesus cam, and hise disciplis, in to the loond of Judee, and there he dwellide with hem, and baptiside.

²³ And Joon was baptisinge in Ennon, bisidis Salym, for many watris weren there; and thei camen, and weren baptisid.

²⁴ And Joon was not yit sent in to prisoun.

²⁶ And thei camen to Joon, and seiden `to hym, Maister, he that was with thee biyonde Jordan, to whom thou hast borun witnessyng, lo! he baptisith, and alle men comen to hym.

⁸ the Spirit where he willeth doth blow, and his voice thou dost hear, but thou hast not known whence he cometh, and whither he goeth; thus is every one who hath been born of the Spirit.'

⁹ Nicodemus answered and said to him, 'How are these things able to happen?'

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said to him, 'Thou art the teacher of Israel — and these things thou dost not know!

¹¹ 'Verily, verily, I say to thee — What we have known we speak, and what we have seen we testify, and our testimony ye do not receive;

¹² if the earthly things I said to you, and ye do not believe, how, if I shall say to you the heavenly things, will ye believe?

¹³ and no one hath gone up to the heaven, except he who out of the heaven came down — the Son of Man who is in the heaven.

¹⁴ 'And as Moses did lift up the serpent in the wilderness, so it behoveth the Son of Man to be lifted up,

¹⁵ that every one who is believing in him may not perish, but may have life age-during,

¹⁶ for God did so love the world, that His Son — the only begotten — He gave, that every one who is believing in him may not perish, but may have life age-during.

¹⁷ For God did not send His Son to the world that he may judge the world, but that the world may be saved through him;

¹⁸ he who is believing in him is not judged, but he who is not believing hath been judged already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

¹⁹ 'And this is the judgment, that the light hath come to the world, and men did love the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil;

²⁰ for every one who is doing wicked things hateth the light, and doth not come unto the light, that his works may not be detected;

²¹ but he who is doing the truth doth come to the light, that his works may be manifested, that in God they are having been wrought.'

²² After these things came Jesus and his disciples to the land of Judea, and there he did tarry with them, and was baptizing;

²³ and John was also baptizing in Aenon, nigh to Salem, because there were many waters there, and they were coming and were being baptized —

²⁴ for John was not yet cast into the prison —

²⁵ there arose then a question from the disciples of John with some Jews about purifying,

²⁶ and they came unto John, and said to him, 'Rabbi, he who was with thee beyond the Jordan, to whom thou didst testify, lo, this one is baptizing, and all are coming unto him.'

²⁷ John answered and said, 'A man is not able to receive anything, if it may not have been given him from the heaven;

²⁸ ye yourselves do testify to me that I said, I am not the Christ, but, that I am having been sent before him;

²⁹ he who is having the bride is bridegroom, and the friend of the bridegroom, who is standing and hearing him, with joy doth rejoice because of the voice of the bridegroom; this, then, my joy hath been fulfilled.
