John 3:1-17 in English

¹ Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

² the same came unto him by night, and said to him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that thou doest, except God be with him.

³ Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

⁴ Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?

⁵ Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

⁶ That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

⁷ Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born anew.

⁸ The wind bloweth where it will, and thou hearest the voice thereof, but knowest not whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

⁹ Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou the teacher of Israel, and understandest not these things?

¹¹ Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that which we know, and bear witness of that which we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.

¹² If I told you earthly things and ye believe not, how shall ye believe if I tell you heavenly things?

¹³ And no one hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended out of heaven, even the Son of man, who is in heaven.

¹⁴ And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up;

¹⁵ that whosoever believeth may in him have eternal life.

¹⁶ For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life.

¹⁷ For God sent not the Son into the world to judge the world; but that the world should be saved through him.

¹ There was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

² This man came to Jesus by night, and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher, for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”

³ Jesus answered and told him, “Most assuredly, I tell you, unless one is born again, that person can’t see the kingdom of God.”

⁴ Nicodemus asked Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He can’t go back into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?”

⁵ Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I tell you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, that one can’t enter the Kingdom of God.

⁶ That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

⁷ Don’t marvel that I told you, ‘You must be born again.’

⁸ The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but can’t tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

⁹ Nicodemus asked Him, “How can these things be?”

¹⁰ “Are you Israel’s teacher,” asked Jesus, “and yet you don’t understand these things?

¹¹ Most assuredly, I tell you, we speak what we know and testify what we have seen, and you don’t receive our witness.

¹² If I have told you earthly things and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

¹³ No one has ever gone up into Heaven except the one who came from Heaven — the Son of Man.

¹⁴ Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,

¹⁵ that everyone who believes in Him should not die, but have eternal life.

¹⁶ For God so sincerely loved the world that He gave His only born Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

¹⁷ For God didn’t send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.

¹ There was a man named Nicodemus, who was a member of the Jewish religious council. He belonged to the Pharisee religious sect.

² He went to see Jesus at night, to talk to him about God's kingdom. He said to Jesus, “Teacher, we believe that you are a teacher who has come from God. We believe this because we know that someone could perform the miracles you are doing only if God were helping him.”

³ Jesus replied to him, “Listen to this carefully: Unless people are born again and have a new life from God, they cannot even see the place where God rules MET!”

⁴ Then Nicodemus said to him, “◄No one can be born when he is old!/How can anyone be born when he is old?► RHQ ◄There is no way he can enter his mother's womb and be born a second time!/How can he enter his mother's womb and be born a second time?► RHQ”

⁵ Jesus answered, “Note this: Being born naturally is not enough; people need to also be born spiritually by God's Spirit. If that does not happen, they cannot experience God ruling MET their lives.

⁶ Humans give birth to humans. But those who are born again as a result of what God's Spirit does receive a new spiritual nature from God .

⁷ Do not be surprised about my telling you that you must be born again and have a new life from God.

⁸ Let me illustrate: The wind blows wherever it wants to blow. You hear its sound, but you do not know where the wind comes from or where it is going. Similarly, those who do not know God cannot understand/control/predict how people are born again as a result of what God's spirit does.”

⁹ Nicodemus replied to him, “How can that happen?”

¹⁰ Jesus replied to him, “You (sg) are a well-known teacher among us Israelite people, so ◄I am surprised that you do not understand these things!/how is it that you do not understand these things?► RHQ

¹¹ Listen to this carefully: ◄My disciples and I/I► tell you (pl) about the things that my disciples and I have seen and know are true, but you (pl) do not admit that what my disciples and I are saying is true.

¹² I have told you about the things that happen here on earth that are true, but you (pl) do not believe me. So if I tell you (sg) about things that happen in heaven, ◄you certainly will not believe me!/how will you believe me?► RHQ

¹³ I am the only one who has gone up to heaven; no one else has gone up there. I am also the one who came down from heaven. So I know what happens there.

¹⁴ Long ago when the Israelite people rebelled against God in the desolate area, God sent poisonous snakes to bite them. But when Moses lifted up on a pole the model of a poisonous snake, everyone who looked at that model was healed from their snake bites. Similarly, even though I am the one who came from heaven, some day people will lift me up on a cross to kill me.

¹⁵ As a result, everyone who believes/trusts in me will have eternal life.”

¹⁶ God loved us people MTY in the world so much that he gave his only Son as a sacrifice for us, in order that everyone who believes in him would not be separated from God forever. Instead, they would have eternal life.

¹⁷ When God sent his Son into the world, his purpose was not to punish the people in MTY the world for their sins. Instead, he sent him in order that they might be saved by him {he might save them} from being ◄ guilty/punished► for their sins.

¹ Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

² He came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him.”

³ Jesus answered him, “Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born anew, he can’t see God’s Kingdom.”

² He came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we are certain that you have come from God as a teacher, because no man would be able to do these signs which you do if God was not with him.

³ Jesus said to him, Truly, I say to you, Without a new birth no man is able to see the kingdom of God.

⁴ Nicodemus said to him, How is it possible for a man to be given birth when he is old? Is he able to go into his mother's body a second time and come to birth again?

⁵ Jesus said in answer, Truly, I say to you, If a man's birth is not from water and from the Spirit, it is not possible for him to go into the kingdom of God.

⁶ That which has birth from the flesh is flesh, and that which has birth from the Spirit is spirit.

⁷ Do not be surprised that I say to you, It is necessary for you to have a second birth.

⁸ The wind goes where its pleasure takes it, and the sound of it comes to your ears, but you are unable to say where it comes from and where it goes: so it is with everyone whose birth is from the Spirit.

⁹ And Nicodemus said to him, How is it possible for these things to be?

¹⁰ And Jesus, answering, said, Are you the teacher of Israel and have no knowledge of these things?

¹¹ Truly, I say to you, We say that of which we have knowledge; we give witness of what we have seen; and you do not take our witness to be true.

¹² If you have no belief when my words are about the things of earth, how will you have belief if my words are about the things of heaven?

¹³ And no one has ever gone up to heaven but he who came down from heaven, the Son of man.

¹⁴ As the snake was lifted up by Moses in the waste land, even so it is necessary for the Son of man to be lifted up:

¹⁵ So that whoever has faith may have in him eternal life.

¹⁶ For God had such love for the world that he gave his only Son, so that whoever has faith in him may not come to destruction but have eternal life.

¹⁷ God did not send his Son into the world to be judge of the world; he sent him so that the world might have salvation through him.

¹ But there was a man from among the Pharisees, his name Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews;

² he came to him by night, and said to him, Rabbi, we know that thou art come a teacher from God, for none can do these signs that thou doest unless God be with him.

³ Jesus answered and said to him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except any one be born anew he cannot see the kingdom of God.

⁴ Nicodemus says to him, How can a man be born being old? can he enter a second time into the womb of his mother and be born?

⁵ Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except any one be born of water and of Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

⁷ Do not wonder that I said to thee, It is needful that ye should be born anew.

⁸ The Spirit breatheth where he will; and thou hearest his voice, but thou knowest not whence he cometh, and whither he goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

¹⁰ Jesus answered, and said to him: Art thou a master in Israel, and knowest not these things?

¹¹ Amen, amen I say to thee, that we speak what we know, and we testify what we have seen, and you receive not our testimony.

¹² If I have spoken to you earthly things, and you believe not; how will you believe, if I shall speak to you heavenly things?

¹³ And no man hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven.

³ Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly I say to you, unless someone is begotten from Above, he is not able to see the kingdom of God.”

⁴ Nicodemus says to Him: “How can a man be begotten, being old? He can't enter his mother's womb a second time and be born, can he?”

⁵ Jesus answered: “Most assuredly I say to you, unless someone is begotten by water and Spirit he is not able to enter the kingdom of God.

⁶ That which has been begotten by the flesh is flesh, and that which has been begotten by the Spirit is spirit.

⁷ Do not be perplexed that I said to you, ‘You (pl) need to be begotten from Above.’

⁸ The wind blows where it wishes, and you (sg) hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who has been begotten by the Spirit.”

⁹ Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?”

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said to Him: “You are the teacher of Israel, yet you do not understand these things?

¹¹ Most assuredly I say to you, we speak what we know and testify to what we have seen, but you (pl) do not receive our testimony.

¹² If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I should tell you the heavenly?

¹³ No one has gone up into Heaven except the One who came down out of Heaven —the Son of the Man, who is in Heaven.

¹⁴ Also, just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, just so the Son of the Man must be lifted up,

¹⁵ so that everyone who believes into Him should not be wasted, but should have eternal life.

¹⁶ Because God loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son, so that everyone who believes into Him should not be wasted, but should have eternal life.

¹⁷ For God did not send His Son into the world in order to condemn the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him.

¹ There was a man named Nicodemus, a Pharisee and a member of the Jewish ruling council.

² He came at night to where Jesus was and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God, for nobody could do the miraculous signs you're doing unless God was with him.”

³ “I tell you the truth,” Jesus replied, “Unless you are reborn, you can't experience God's kingdom.”

⁴ “How can you be reborn when you're old?” Nicodemus asked. “You can't go back into your mother's womb and be born a second time!”

⁵ “I tell you the truth, you can't enter God's kingdom unless you are born of water and the Spirit,” Jesus told him.

⁶ “What's born of the flesh is flesh, and what's born of the Spirit is Spirit.

⁷ Don't be surprised at my telling you, ‘You must be reborn.’

⁸ The wind blows wherever it wants, and just as you hear the sound it makes, but don't know where it's coming from or where it's going, that's how it is for everyone who is born of the spirit.”

⁹ “How is this possible?” Nicodemus asked.

¹⁰ “You're a famous teacher in Israel, and yet you don't understand such things?” Jesus replied.

¹¹ “I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know and give evidence regarding what we have seen, but you refuse to accept our testimony.

¹² If you don't trust what I say when I tell you about earthly things, how would you ever trust what I say if I were to tell you about heavenly things?

¹³ No one has gone up to heaven, but the Son of man came down from heaven.

¹⁴ Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so the Son of man must be lifted up,

¹⁵ that everyone who trusts in him will have eternal life.

¹⁶ For God loved the world, and this is how: he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who trusts in him shouldn't die, but have eternal life.

¹⁷ God didn't send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

¹ There was nowe a man of the Pharises, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Iewes.

² This man came to Iesus by night, and sayd vnto him, Rabbi, we knowe ye thou art a teacher come from God: for no man could do these miracles that thou doest, except God were with him.

³ Iesus answered, and said vnto him, Verely, verely I say vnto thee, except a man be borne againe, he can not see the kingdome of God.

⁴ Nicodemus sayde vnto him, Howe can a man be borne which is olde? can he enter into his mothers wombe againe, and be borne?

⁵ Iesus answered, Verely, verely I say vnto thee, except that a man be borne of water and of the Spirite, hee can not enter into the kingdome of God.

⁶ That which is borne of the flesh, is flesh: and that that is borne of the Spirit, is spirit.

⁷ Marueile not that I said to thee, Yee must be borne againe.

⁸ The winde bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it commeth, and whither it goeth: so is euery man that is borne of the Spirit.

⁹ Nicodemus answered, and said vnto him, Howe can these things be?

¹⁰ Iesus answered, and saide vnto him, Art thou a teacher of Israel, and knowest not these things?

¹¹ Verely, verely I say vnto thee, wee speake that we know, and testifie that we haue seene: but yee receiue not our witnesse.

¹² If when I tel you earthly things, ye beleeue not, howe should yee beleeue, if I shall tel you of heauenly things?

¹³ For no man ascendeth vp to heauen, but he that hath descended from heauen, that Sonne of man which is in heauen.

¹⁶ Human beings are very much in God's feelings. Because of that he gave his very own male child for them, so that the ones who habitually believe in him should not become worthless dregs, but should live for ever in his camp.

¹⁷ He did not send his son here for what's-it, to banish them from his presence for ever. He sent him for us, to rescue everybody!

⁴ “How can a person,” asked Nicodemus, “be born when they are old? Can they be born a second time?”

⁵ “In truth I tell you,” answered Jesus, “unless a person owes their birth to water and Spirit, they cannot enter the kingdom of God.

⁶ All that owes its birth to human nature is human, and all that owes its birth to the Spirit is spiritual.

⁷ Do not wonder at my telling you that you all need to be reborn.

⁸ The wind blows wherever it wants, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from, or where it goes; it is the same with everyone who owes his birth to the Spirit.”

¹³ And no man ascendeth or goeth up into heaven, but he that came down from heaven, man’s Son that is in heaven or the Son of man which is in heaven.

¹⁴ And as Moses areared or reared up a serpent in desert, so it behooveth man’s Son to be raised up,

¹⁵ that each man that believeth in him, perish not, but have everlasting life.

¹⁶ For God loved so the world or Forsooth God so loved the world, that he gave his one begotten Son, that each man that believeth in him perish not, but have everlasting life.

¹⁷ For God sent not his Son into the world, that he judge the world, but that the world be saved by him.

¹ And there was a man of the Pharisees, Nicodemus by name, a prince of the Jews (or a leader of the Jews).

² And he came to Jesus by night, and said to him, Rabbi, we know, that thou art come from God a master, or Rabbi, we know, for of God thou hast come a master; for no man may do these signs, that thou doest, no but God be with him. (And he came to Jesus by night, and said to him, Teacher, we know, that thou art a teacher sent from God; for no man can do these miracles, that thou doest, unless God be with him.)

³ Jesus answered, and said to him, Truly, truly, I say to thee, no but a man be born again, he may not see the kingdom of God, (or Truly, I tell thee the truth, unless a man is born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God).

⁴ Nicodemus said to him, How may a man be born, when he is old? whether he may enter again into his mother’s womb, and be born again?

⁵ Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to thee, no but a man be born again of water, and of the Holy Ghost, he may not enter into the kingdom of God. (Jesus answered, Truly, I tell thee the truth, unless a man be born again from water, and from the Holy Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.)

⁶ That that is born of the flesh, is flesh; and that that is born of the Spirit, is spirit. (That which is born from the flesh, is flesh; and that which is born from the Spirit, is spirit.)

⁷ Wonder thou not, for I said to thee, It behooveth you to be born again.

⁸ The Spirit breatheth where he will, and thou hearest his voice, but thou knowest not, from whence he cometh, nor whither he goeth; so is each man that is born of the Spirit. (The Spirit breatheth where he wanteth, and thou hearest his voice, but thou knowest not, where he cometh from, nor where he goeth; so is each man who is born from the Spirit.)

⁹ Nicodemus answered, and said to him, How may these things be done? (or How can these things be done?)

¹⁰ Jesus answered, and said to him, Thou art a master in Israel (or Thou art a teacher in Israel), and knowest not these things?

¹¹ Truly, truly, I say to thee, for we speak that that we know, and we witness that that we have seen, and ye take not our witnessing. (Truly, I tell thee the truth, for we speak of that which we know, and we testify about that which we have seen, but ye do not receive or accept our testimony.)

¹² If I have said to you earthly things, and ye believe not, how if I say to you heavenly things, shall ye believe?

² And he cam to Jhesu bi niyt, and seide to hym, Rabi, we witen, that thou art comun fro God maister; for no man may do these signes, that thou doist, but God be with hym.

³ Jhesus answerde, and seide to hym, Treuli, treuli, Y seie to thee, but a man be borun ayen, he may not se the kyngdom of God.

⁴ Nychodeme seide to hym, Hou may a man be borun, whanne he is eeld? whether he may entre ayen in to his modris wombe, and be borun ayen?

⁵ Jhesus answeride, Treuli, treuli, Y seie to thee, but a man be borun ayen of watir, and of the Hooli Goost, he may not entre in to the kyngdom of God.

⁶ `That that is borun of the fleisch, is fleisch; and `that that is borun of spirit, is spirit.

⁷ Wondre thou not, for Y seide to thee, It bihoueth you to be borun ayen.

⁸ The spirit brethith where he wole, and thou herist his vois, but thou wost not, fro whennus he cometh, ne whidir he goith; so is ech man that is borun of the spirit.

⁹ Nychodeme answeride, and seide to hym, Hou moun these thingis be don?

¹⁰ Jhesus answeride, and seide to hym, Thou art a maister in Israel, and knowist not these thingis?

¹¹ Treuli, treuli, Y seie to thee, for we speken that that we witen, and we witnessen that that we han seyn, and ye taken not oure witnessyng.

¹² If Y haue seid to you ertheli thingis, and ye bileuen not, hou if Y seie to you heueneli thingis, schulen ye bileue?

¹³ And no man stieth in to heuene, but he that cam doun fro heuene, mannys sone that is in heuene.

¹⁴ And as Moises areride a serpent in desert, so it bihoueth mannys sone to be reisid,

¹⁵ that ech man that bileueth in hym, perische not, but haue euerlastynge lijf.

¹⁶ For God louede so the world, that he yaf his `oon bigetun sone, that ech man that bileueth in him perische not, but haue euerlastynge lijf.

¹⁷ For God sente not his sone in to the world, that he iuge the world, but that the world be saued bi him.

¹ And there was a man of the Pharisees, Nicodemus his name, a ruler of the Jews,

² this one came unto him by night, and said to him, 'Rabbi, we have known that from God thou hast come — a teacher, for no one these signs is able to do that thou dost, if God may not be with him.'

³ Jesus answered and said to him, 'Verily, verily, I say to thee, If any one may not be born from above, he is not able to see the reign of God;'

⁴ Nicodemus saith unto him, 'How is a man able to be born, being old? is he able into the womb of his mother a second time to enter, and to be born?'

⁵ Jesus answered, 'Verily, verily, I say to thee, If any one may not be born of water, and the Spirit, he is not able to enter into the reign of God;

⁶ that which hath been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which hath been born of the Spirit is spirit.

⁷ 'Thou mayest not wonder that I said to thee, It behoveth you to be born from above;

⁸ the Spirit where he willeth doth blow, and his voice thou dost hear, but thou hast not known whence he cometh, and whither he goeth; thus is every one who hath been born of the Spirit.'

⁹ Nicodemus answered and said to him, 'How are these things able to happen?'

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said to him, 'Thou art the teacher of Israel — and these things thou dost not know!

¹¹ 'Verily, verily, I say to thee — What we have known we speak, and what we have seen we testify, and our testimony ye do not receive;

¹² if the earthly things I said to you, and ye do not believe, how, if I shall say to you the heavenly things, will ye believe?

¹³ and no one hath gone up to the heaven, except he who out of the heaven came down — the Son of Man who is in the heaven.

¹⁴ 'And as Moses did lift up the serpent in the wilderness, so it behoveth the Son of Man to be lifted up,

¹⁵ that every one who is believing in him may not perish, but may have life age-during,

¹⁶ for God did so love the world, that His Son — the only begotten — He gave, that every one who is believing in him may not perish, but may have life age-during.

¹⁷ For God did not send His Son to the world that he may judge the world, but that the world may be saved through him;
