John 21:19-23 in English

¹⁹ Now this he spake, signifying by what manner of death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.

²⁰ Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; who also leaned back on his breast at the supper, and said, Lord, who is he that betrayeth thee?

²¹ Peter therefore seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?

²² Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.

²³ This saying therefore went forth among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, that he should not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?

¹⁹ He said this to indicate what kind of death he would glorify God with. When He had said this, He told Peter, “Follow me!”

²⁰ Then Peter, turning around, saw a disciple following. This was the disciple who Jesus sincerely loved, the one who had also leaned on Jesus’ breast at the supper and asked, “Lord, who is going to betray You?”

²¹ Peter therefore, seeing him, asked Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?”

²² Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!”

²³ Because of this answer, the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple wouldn’t die, but Jesus didn’t tell him that he wouldn’t die, but only, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?”

¹⁹ This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.

²⁰ Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?

²¹ Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?

²² Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.

²³ Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?

¹⁹ Jesus said this to indicate how Peter would die ◄ violently/on a cross► in order to honor God. Then Jesus said to him, “Keep being my faithful disciple until you die.”

²⁰ Peter turned around and saw that I was following them. I was the one who leaned close to Jesus during the Passover meal and said, “Lord, who is going to enable your enemies to seize you?”

²¹ When Peter saw me, he asked, “Lord, what is going to happen to him?”

²² Jesus said to him, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, ◄that is not your concern!/what is that to you?► RHQ You be my faithful disciple!”

²³ Some of the other believers heard a report of what Jesus had said about me, and they thought that Jesus meant that I would not die. But Jesus did not say that I would not die. He said only, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, ◄that is not your concern!/what is that to you?► RHQ”

¹⁹ Now he said this, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. When he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.”

²⁰ Then Peter, turning round, saw the disciple who was dear to Jesus coming after them — the disciple who was resting on his breast at the last meal, and said, Lord, who is it who will be false to you?

²¹ Seeing him, Peter said to Jesus, What about this man?

²² Jesus said to him, If it is my desire for him to be here till I come back, what is that to you? come yourself after me.

²³ So this saying went about among the brothers that this disciple would not undergo death: Jesus, however, did not say that he would not undergo death, but, If it is my desire for him to be here till I come back, what is that to you?

¹⁹ But he said this signifying by what death he should glorify God. And having said this, he says to him, Follow me.

²⁰ Peter, turning round, sees the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also leaned at supper on his breast, and said, Lord, who is it that delivers thee up?

²¹ Peter, seeing him, says to Jesus, Lord, and what of this man?

²² Jesus says to him, If I will that he abide until I come, what is that to thee? Follow thou me.

²³ This word therefore went out among the brethren, That disciple does not die. And Jesus did not say to him, He does not die; but, If I will that he abide until I come, what is that to thee?

²² Jesus said to him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”

²³ Therefore this saying went out among the brothers that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?”

¹⁹ (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) And upon saying that He says to him, “Follow me!”

²⁰ But turning around Peter sees the disciple whom Jesus loved following (that is the one who reclined on His chest at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who is betraying you?”).

²¹ Seeing him, Peter says to Jesus, “Lord, what about him?”

²² Jesus says to him: “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me.”

²³ So this saying spread among the brothers, that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him Peter that he John would not die, but, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?”

¹⁹ Jesus said this to explain the kind of death by which he would glorify God. Then he said to Peter, “Follow me.”

²⁰ As Peter turned round, he saw the disciple Jesus loved following them, the one who had leaned over to Jesus during the supper and asked, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”

²¹ Peter asked Jesus, “What about him, Lord?”

²² Jesus told him, “If I want him to remain alive here until I return, why is that your concern? You follow me!”

²³ This is why the saying spread among the believers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus didn't say to him that he wouldn't die, just that “If I want him to remain alive here until I return, why is that your concern?”

¹⁹ And this spake he signifying by what death he shoulde glorifie God. And when he had said this, he said to him, Folowe me.

²⁰ Then Peter turned about, and sawe the disciple whom JESUS loued, folowing, which had also leaned on his breast at supper, and had saide, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?

²¹ When Peter therefore sawe him, he saide to Iesus, Lord, what shall this man doe?

²² Iesus said vnto him, If I will that he tarie till I come, what is it to thee? follow thou me.

²³ Then went this worde abroade among the brethren, that this disciple shoulde not die. Yet Iesus saide not to him, He shall not die: but if I will that he tarie till I come, what is it to thee?

²² “If it is my will that he should wait until I come,” answered Jesus, “what has that to do with you? Follow me yourself.”

²³ So the report spread amongst his followers that that disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say that he was not to die, but said “If it is my will that he should wait until I come, what has that to do with you?”

²⁰ Then Peter Rock, turning around, saw a disciple following. This was the disciple whom Yeshua Salvation felt agapao ·totally devoted love· for, the one who had also leaned on Yeshua Salvation’s chest at the supper and asked, “Lord, who is going to betray You?”

²¹ Peter Rock seeing him, said to Yeshua Salvation, “Lord, what about this man?”

²² Yeshua Salvation said to him, “If I desire that he stay until I come, what is that to you? You follow me.”

²³ This saying therefore went out among the brothers, that this disciple wouldn’t die. Yet Yeshua Salvation didn’t say to him that he wouldn’t die, but, “If I desire that he stay until I come, what is that to you?”

¹⁹ That spake he signifyinge by what deeth he shuld glorify God. And when he had sayde thus he sayd to him folowe me.

²⁰ Peter turned about and sawe that disciple who Iesus loved folowynge: which also lened on his brest at supper and sayde: Lorde which is he that shall betraye the?

²¹ When Peter sawe him he sayde to Iesus: Lorde what shall he here do?

²² Iesus sayd vnto him Yf I will have him to tary tyll I come what is that to the? folowe thou me.

²³ Then went this sayinge a broode amonge the brethren that that disciple shulde not dye. Yet Iesus sayde not to him he shall not dye: but yf I will that he tary tyll I come what is that to the?

¹⁹ Now Jesus said this in order to indicate with what kind of death Peter would glorify God. After he had said this, he said to Peter, “Follow me.”

²² Jesus saith to him, So I will, that he dwell till I come, what to thee? pursue thou me.

²³ Therefore this word went out among the brethren, that that disciple dieth not. And Jesus said not to him, that he dieth not, but, So I will, that he dwell till I come, what to thee?

²⁰ Peter turned, and saw that disciple (pur)suing, whom Jesus loved, which also rested in the supper on his breast, and said to him, Lord, who is it, that shall betray thee? (Peter turned, and saw that disciple following, whom Jesus loved, who had sat close beside him at the supper, and had asked him, Lord, who is it, that shall betray thee?)

²¹ Therefore when Peter had seen this disciple, he saith to Jesus, Lord, but what (about) this (man)?

²² Jesus saith to him, So I will, that he dwell till I come, what (is it) to thee? (pur)sue thou me. (Jesus said to him, If I desire, that he live until I come, what is it to thee? follow me.)

²³ Therefore this word went out among the brethren, that that disciple dieth not. And Jesus said not to him, that he dieth not, but, So I will, that he dwell till I come, what (is it) to thee? (But Jesus did not say to him, that he would not die, but rather, If I desire, that he live until I come, what is it to thee?)

¹⁹ He seide this thing, signifynge bi what deth he schulde glorifie God. And whanne he hadde seid these thingis, he seith to hym, Sue thou me.

²⁰ Petre turnede, and say thilke disciple suynge, whom Jhesus louede, which also restid in the soper on his brest, and he seide to hym, Lord, who is it, that schal bitraie thee?

²¹ Therfor whanne Petre hadde seyn this, he seith to Jhesu, Lord, but what this?

²² Jhesus seith to him, So I wole that he dwelle til that Y come, what to thee? sue thou me.

²³ Therfor this word wente out among the britheren, that thilke disciple dieth not. And Jhesus seide not to hym, that he dieth not, but, So Y wole that he dwelle til Y come, what to thee?

¹⁹ and this he said, signifying by what death he shall glorify God; and having said this, he saith to him, 'Be following me.'

²⁰ And Peter having turned about doth see the disciple whom Jesus was loving following, (who also reclined in the supper on his breast, and said, 'Sir, who is he who is delivering thee up?')

²¹ Peter having seen this one, saith to Jesus, 'Lord, and what of this one?'
