John 1:19-37 in English

¹⁹ And this is the witness of John, when the Jews sent unto him from Jerusalem priests and Levites to ask him, Who art thou?

²⁰ And he confessed, and denied not; and he confessed, I am not the Christ.

²¹ And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he saith, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No.

²² They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

²³ He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said Isaiah the prophet.

²⁴ And they had been sent from the Pharisees.

²⁵ And they asked him, and said unto him, Why then baptizest thou, if thou art not the Christ, neither Elijah, neither the prophet?

²⁶ John answered them, saying, I baptize in water: in the midst of you standeth one whom ye know not,

²⁷ even he that cometh after me, the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to unloose.

²⁸ These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

²⁹ On the morrow he seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world!

³⁰ This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man who is become before me: for he was before me.

³¹ And I knew him not; but that he should be made manifest to Israel, for this cause came I baptizing in water.

³² And John bare witness, saying, I have beheld the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven; and it abode upon him.

³³ And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize in water, he said unto me, Upon whomsoever thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and abiding upon him, the same is he that baptizeth in the Holy Spirit.

³⁴ And I have seen, and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.

³⁵ Again on the morrow John was standing, and two of his disciples;

³⁶ and he looked upon Jesus as he walked, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God!

³⁷ And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

¹⁹ Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

²⁰ He confessed, and didn’t deny, but confessed, “I’m not the Christ.”

²¹ They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”

²² Then they asked him, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

²³ John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”

²⁴ Now those who were sent were Pharisees.

²⁵ They asked him, saying, “Why then do you baptize if you aren’t the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

²⁶ John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water, but One stands among you that you don’t know.

²⁷ It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to untie.”

²⁸ This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

²⁹ The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Look! God’s Lamb who takes away the sin of the world!

³⁰ This is the One I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me is preferred before me because He existed before me.’

³¹ I didn’t know Him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that He might be revealed to Israel.”

³² John testified, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from Heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.

³³ I wouldn’t have known Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘Whoever you see the Spirit descending upon, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

³⁴ I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Son.”

³⁵ The next day, John again stood with two of His disciples.

³⁶ When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, God’s Lamb!”

³⁷ The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.

¹⁹ The Jewish leaders SYN in Jerusalem city sent some Jewish priests and ◄Levites/men who worked in the temple► to where John was, to ask him some questions. They said to him, “What do you claim about yourself?”

²⁰ So John told them the truth, and he told them clearly DOU. He said, “ I am not ◄the Messiah/God's chosen king►!”

²¹ Then they asked him, “Then what do you say about yourself? Are you the prophet Elijah that was prophesied to return {◄ someone/another prophet► prophesied would return} before the Messiah?” He replied, “No, I am not.” Then they asked him, “Are you the prophet like Moses that ◄ we are waiting for/God promised to send►?” He replied, “No.”

²² So they asked him, “Then who do you claim to be? Tell us so that we can go back and report to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

²³ John replied, “ I am the one the prophet Isaiah said would proclaim this new message loudly to the people who would pass by in this desolate area: ‘Prepare yourselves to receive the Lord when he comes MET, just like people prepare a road for an important official.

²⁴ Some of those people who were questioning John were ones who had been sent by the Pharisee religious group {whom the Pharisee religious group had sent}.

²⁵ They asked John, “Since you say you are not the Messiah, nor the prophet Elijah, nor the prophet like Moses, what authority do you have? Furthermore, why are you baptizing Jews, treating them as though they were non-Jews who wanted to become Jews?”

²⁶ John replied, “I am just baptizing people with water to prepare them to welcome the Messiah. But right now someone is among you whom you people do not know.

²⁷ He will preach to you after I am gone. He is so important that I am not worthy to serve him as a slave MET by untying his sandals.”

²⁸ Those things happened at a place called Bethany, on the east side of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing people.

²⁹ The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him. He said to the people, “Look! Here is the man whom God has appointed to be a sacrifice MET, like the lambs that the people of Israel sacrificed! By sacrificing himself he will make it possible for everyone in the world to be no longer guilty for having sinned.

³⁰ He is the one about whom I said before, ‘Someone will come later who is more important than I am, since he existed long before me.’

³¹ I myself did not previously recognize that he was the Messiah. But now I know who he is, and I have baptized people with water to enable you people of Israel to recognize who he is.”

³² John spoke clearly what God had shown him about Jesus. He said, “I saw God's Spirit as he was descending from heaven in the form of a dove. The Spirit remained on Jesus.

³³ I myself did not know previously that he was the Messiah. However, God sent me to baptize people with water, people who said they wanted to turn from their sinful ways. While I was doing that, God told me, ‘The man on whom you will see my Spirit descend and remain is the one who will put the Holy Spirit within you (pl) to truly change your lives.’

³⁴ I saw the Spirit descend on him, and I tell you that he is ◄the Son of God/the person who is both God and man►.”

³⁵ The next day John was at the same place again ◄with two of us/with two of his disciples►.

³⁶ When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look! There is the man God has appointed to be a sacrifice, like the lambs MET the people of Israel have sacrificed!”

³⁷ ◄When we/those two disciples► heard John say this, we/they went with Jesus.

²⁰ He declared, and didn’t deny, but he declared, “I am not the Christ.”

²² So they said to him, Who are you then? We have to give some answer to those who sent us. What have you to say about yourself?

²³ He said, I am the voice of one crying in the waste land, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said Isaiah the prophet.

²⁴ Those who had been sent came from the Pharisees.

²⁵ And they put this question to him, saying, Why then are you giving baptism if you are not the Christ, or Elijah, or the prophet?

²⁶ John's answer was: I give baptism with water; but there is one among you of whom you have no knowledge;

²⁷ It is he who is coming after me; I am not good enough to undo his shoes.

²⁸ These things took place at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was giving baptism.

²⁹ The day after, John sees Jesus coming to him and says, See, here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

³⁰ This is he of whom I said, One is coming after me who is put over me because he was in existence before me.

³¹ I myself had no knowledge of him, but I came giving baptism with water so that he might be seen openly by Israel.

³² And John gave this witness, saying, I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove and resting on him.

³³ I had no knowledge who he was, but he who sent me to give baptism with water said to me, The one on whom you see the Spirit coming down and resting, it is he who gives baptism with the Holy Spirit.

³⁴ This I saw myself and my witness is that he is the Son of God.

³⁵ The day after, John was there again with two of his disciples;

³⁶ And looking at Jesus while he was walking he said, See, there is the Lamb of God!

³⁷ Hearing what he said, the two disciples went after Jesus.

¹⁹ And this is the witness of John, when the Jews sent from Jerusalem priests and Levites that they might ask him, Thou, who art thou?

²⁰ And he acknowledged and denied not, and acknowledged, I am not the Christ.

²¹ And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he says, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No.

²² They said therefore to him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

²³ He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the path of the Lord, as said Esaias the prophet.

²⁶ John answered them saying: “I baptize with water, but among you stands One whom you do not know.

²⁷ He is the One coming after me who is now ahead of me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.”

²⁸ These things happened in Bithabara, across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

²⁹ The next day John sees Jesus coming toward him and says: “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

³⁰ This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who is now ahead of me, because He existed before I did.’

³¹ I did not know Him; but so that He should be revealed to Israel, that is why I came baptizing with water.”

³² And John testified saying: “I observed the Spirit coming down like a dove out of heaven, and He rested upon Him.

³³ Now I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water, He said to me, ‘The One upon whom you see the Spirit coming down and resting—this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

³⁴ So I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”

³⁵ Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples.

³⁶ And seeing Jesus walking by, he says, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

³⁷ The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

¹⁹ This is what John publicly stated when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

²⁰ John declared plainly and clearly without hesitation, “I am not the Messiah.”

²¹ “So then, who are you?” they asked. “Elijah?” “No, I'm not,” he answered. “Are you the Prophet?” “No,” he replied.

²² “Well, who are you, then?” they asked. “We have to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

²³ “I am a voice calling in the desert, ‘Make the Lord's way straight!’” he said, using the words of the prophet Isaiah.

²⁴ The priests and Levites sent by the Pharisees

²⁵ asked him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you're not the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?”

²⁶ John replied, “I baptize with water, but standing among you is someone you don't know.

²⁷ He is coming after me, but I am not even worthy to untie his sandals.”

²⁸ This all happened in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

²⁹ The next day John saw Jesus approaching him, and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

³⁰ This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man who is coming after me is more important than me, for before I ever existed he already was.’

³¹ I didn't know myself who he was, but I came baptizing with water so that he could be revealed to Israel.”

³² John gave his evidence about him, saying, “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove and rest upon him.

³³ I wouldn't have known him except he who sent me to baptize with water had told me, ‘The one you see the Spirit descend to and rest upon, he is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

³⁴ I saw it happen and I declare that this is the Son of God.”

³⁵ The next day John was standing there with two of his disciples.

³⁶ He saw Jesus passing by, and said, “Look! This is the Lamb of God!”

³⁷ When the two disciples heard what he said they went and followed Jesus.

²¹ They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.”

²² They said therefore to him, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

²³ He said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

²⁴ The ones who had been sent were from the Pharisees.

²⁵ They asked him, “Why then do you immerse if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”

²⁶ Yochanan answered them, “I immerse in water, but amongst you stands one whom you don’t know.

²⁷ He is the one who comes after me, who is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to loosen.”

²⁸ These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where Yochanan was immersing.

²⁹ The next day, he saw Yeshua coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

³⁰ This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me.’

³¹ I didn’t know him, but for this reason I came immersing in water, that he would be revealed to Israel.”

³² Yochanan testified, saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him.

³³ I didn’t recognise him, but he who sent me to immerse in water said to me, ‘On whomever you will see the Spirit descending and remaining on him is he who immerses in the Holy Spirit.’

³⁴ I have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

³⁵ Again, the next day, Yochanan was standing with two of his disciples,

³⁶ and he looked at Yeshua as he walked, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”

³⁷ The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Yeshua.

¹⁹ And this is the witnessing of John, when Jews sent from Jerusalem priests and deacons to him, that they should ask him, Who art thou?

²⁰ He acknowledged, and denied not, and he acknowledged, For I am not Christ.

³¹ And I knew him not, but that he be showed in Israel, therefore I came baptizing in water.

³² And John bare witnessing, and said, I saw the Spirit coming down as a culver from heaven, and dwelled on him.

³³ And I knew him not; but he that sent me to baptize in water, said to me, On whom thou seest the Spirit coming down, and dwelling on him, this is he, that baptizeth in the Holy Ghost.

³⁴ And I saw, and bare witnessing, that this is the Son of God.

²¹ And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? (or Elijah?) And he said, I am not. Art thou a prophet? or Art thou the prophet? (or Art thou the Prophet?) And he answered, Nay.

²² Therefore they said to him, Who art thou? (So) That we (can) give an answer to these that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

²³ He said, I am a voice of a crier in desert, Dress ye the way of the Lord, as Esaias the prophet, said. He saith, I am a voice of a man crying in desert, Dress ye the way of the Lord, as Esaias, the prophet, said. (He said, I (am) a voice of a (man) crying in the desert, Align or Make straight the way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said.)

²⁴ And they that were sent, were of the Pharisees.

²⁵ And they asked him, and said to him, What then baptizest thou, if thou art not Christ, neither Elias, neither a prophet? (And they asked him, Why then do thou baptize, if thou art not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?)

²³ He seide, Y am a vois of a crier in deseert, Dresse ye the weie of the Lord, as Ysaie, the prophete, seide.

²⁴ And thei that weren sent, weren of the Fariseis.

²⁵ And thei axiden hym, and seiden to hym, What thanne baptisist thou, if thou art not Crist, nether Elie, nether a profete?

²⁶ Joon answeride to hem, and seide, Y baptise in watir, but in the myddil of you hath stonde oon, that ye knowen not;

²⁷ he it is, that schal come aftir me, that was maad bifor me, of whom Y am not worthi to louse the thwong of his schoo.

²⁸ These thingis weren don in Bethanye biyende Jordan, where Joon was baptisyng.

²⁹ Anothir day Joon say Jhesu comynge to hym, and he seide, Lo! the lomb of God; lo! he that doith awei the synnes of the world.

³⁰ This is he, that Y seide of, Aftir me is comun a man, which was maad bifor me; for he was rather than Y.

³¹ And Y knew hym not, but that he be schewid in Israel, therfor Y cam baptisynge in watir.

³² And Joon bar witnessyng, and seide, That Y saiy the spirit comynge doun as a culuer fro heuene, and dwellide on hym.

³³ And Y knew hym not; but he that sente me to baptise in watir, seide to me, On whom thou seest the Spirit comynge doun, and dwellynge on hym, this is he, that baptisith in the Hooli Goost.

³⁴ And Y say, and bar witnessyng, that this is the sone of God.

²⁶ John answered them, saying, 'I baptize with water, but in midst of you he hath stood whom ye have not known, this one it is who is coming after me, who hath been before me,

²⁷ of whom I am not worthy that I may loose the cord of his sandal.'

²⁸ These things came to pass in Bethabara, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing,

²⁹ on the morrow John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, 'Lo, the Lamb of God, who is taking away the sin of the world;

³⁰ this is he concerning whom I said, After me doth come a man, who hath come before me, because he was before me:

³¹ and I knew him not, but, that he might be manifested to Israel, because of this I came with the water baptizing.

³² And John testified, saying — 'I have seen the Spirit coming down, as a dove, out of heaven, and it remained on him;

³³ and I did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water, He said to me, On whomsoever thou mayest see the Spirit coming down, and remaining on him, this is he who is baptizing with the Holy Spirit;

³⁴ and I have seen, and have testified, that this is the Son of God.'

³⁵ On the morrow, again, John was standing, and two of his disciples,

³⁶ and having looked on Jesus walking, he saith, 'Lo, the Lamb of God;'

³⁷ and the two disciples heard him speaking, and they followed Jesus.
