John 19:4-31 in English

⁴ And Pilate went out again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him out to you, that ye may know that I find no crime in him.

⁵ Jesus therefore came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold, the man!

⁶ When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him! Pilate saith unto them, Take him yourselves, and crucify him: for I find no crime in him.

⁷ The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

⁸ When Pilate therefore heard this saying, he was the more afraid;

⁹ and he entered into the Prætorium again, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.

¹⁰ Pilate therefore saith unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to release thee, and have power to crucify thee?

¹¹ Jesus answered him, Thou wouldest have no power against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath greater sin.

¹² Upon this Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou release this man, thou art not Cæsar’s friend: every one that maketh himself a king speaketh against Cæsar.

¹³ When Pilate therefore heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment-seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.

¹⁴ Now it was the Preparation of the passover: it was about the sixth hour. And he saith unto the Jews, Behold, your King!

¹⁸ where they crucified him, and with him two others, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.

¹⁹ And Pilate wrote a title also, and put it on the cross. And there was written, JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

²⁰ This title therefore read many of the Jews, for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city; and it was written in Hebrew, and in Latin, and in Greek.

²¹ The chief priests of the Jews therefore said to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but, that he said, I am King of the Jews.

²² Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

²³ The soldiers therefore, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also the coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

²⁴ They said therefore one to another, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my garments among them, And upon my vesture did they cast lots.

²⁵ These things therefore the soldiers did. But there were standing by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

²⁶ When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold, thy son!

²⁷ Then saith he to the disciple, Behold, thy mother! And from that hour the disciple took her unto his own home.

²⁸ After this Jesus, knowing that all things are now finished, that the scripture might be accomplished, saith, I thirst.

²⁹ There was set there a vessel full of vinegar: so they put a sponge full of the vinegar upon hyssop, and brought it to his mouth.

³⁰ When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up his spirit.

³¹ The Jews therefore, because it was the Preparation, that the bodies should not remain on the cross upon the sabbath (for the day of that sabbath was a high day), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

⁴ Pilate then went out again, and told the Jews, “Look, I’m bringing Him out to you, that you may know that I find no basis for a charge against Him.”

⁵ Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, and Pilate said to them, “Look! Here is the man!”

⁶ When the chief priests and officers saw Him, they shouted “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” Pilate told them, “You take Him and crucify Him, because I find no basis for a charge against Him.”

⁷ The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to our law He ought to die, because He claimed to be God’s Son.”

⁸ When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,

⁹ and went back into the Praetorium, and asked Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus didn’t answer him.

¹⁰ Pilate therefore asked him, “Do you refuse to speak to me? Don’t you know that I have authority to release you, and authority to crucify you?”

¹¹ Jesus answered, “You would have no authority at all against me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered me to you has the greater sin.”

¹² From then on, Pilate tried to release Him, but the Jews shouted, “If you let this man go, you aren’t Caesar’s friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”

¹³ Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called “The Pavement,” but in Hebrew, “Gabbatha.”

¹⁴ Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. Pilate told the Jews, “Look! Here is your King!”

¹⁵ They therefore shouted, “Away with Him! Away with Him! Crucify Him!” Pilate asked them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!”

²⁰ Then many of the Jews read this notice, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

²¹ Therefore the chief priests of the Jews told Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.”’”

²² Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

²³ When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they split His garments into four parts, to each soldier a part, including the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece.

²⁴ Therefore they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots to see whose it will be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says: “They divided my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things.

²⁵ Now Jesus’ mother, His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene stood by Jesus’ cross.

²⁶ Therefore when Jesus saw His mother, and the disciple who He sincerely loved standing by, He told His mother, “Woman, here is your son!”

²⁷ Then He told the disciple, “Here is your mother!” From that hour, that disciple took her into his own home.

²⁸ After this, Jesus, knowing that everything was now accomplished, so that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I’m thirsty!”

²⁹ A jar full of vinegar was standing there, so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on a hyssop stalk, and lifted it up to His mouth.

³⁰ When Jesus had received the vinegar, He said, “It is finished!” Then, He bowed His head, and gave up His spirit.

³¹ Because it was the Preparation Day, the Jews asked Pilate for the prisoners’ legs to be broken, and that they might be taken away, so that the bodies wouldn’t stay on the cross on the Sabbath (because that Sabbath was a special one).

⁴ Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.

⁵ When Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Look at this wretched man!”

⁶ When the chief priests and Temple guards saw him, they shouted, “Command your soldiers to kill him by nailing him to a cross! Crucify him!” Pilate, knowing that they could not legally do it themselves, said to them, “You yourselves take him and nail him to a cross! As for me, I do not find that he has done anything for which we should punish him.”

⁷ The Jewish leaders SYN replied, “ Our ancestor Moses gave us the law that says we must kill anyone who claims to be God. This man claims that he is ◄the Son of/the man who is also► God, so you must have him killed { command your soldiers to kill him}.”

⁸ When Pilate heard that, he was more afraid of what would happen to himself if he commanded the soldiers to kill Jesus.

⁹ So he took Jesus back inside the headquarters. He said to Jesus, “Where do you really come from?” But Jesus did not answer him.

¹⁰ So Pilate said to him, “Are you refusing to answer me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you, and I also have authority to have you crucified {command my soldiers to crucify you}?”

¹¹ Jesus replied, “The only authority you have is what has been given to you by God MTY {what God MTY has given you}. The high priest put me into your hands. He has done to me what he wanted to do, and you do not really want to do it. So he is guilty of committing a greater sin than you are.”

¹² Because of that, Pilate kept trying to release Jesus. But the Jewish leaders SYN, threatening to report to the Emperor that Pilate was not going to punish a man who claimed he was a king, continued to shout, “Anyone who claims that he is a king is opposing the Emperor! So if you release this man, we will make sure that the Emperor learns about it, and then he will not consider you as his friend!”

¹³ When Pilate heard that, he brought Jesus out again. He sat down at the place where he made decisions about punishing people. The place was called {People called it} The Stone Pavement. In the Aramaic language its name was Gabbatha.

¹⁴ It was almost noontime, on the day that they prepared things for the Passover celebration (OR, the day before the Sabbath during the Passover celebration). Pilate said to the Jewish leaders SYN, ridiculing them, “Look at your king!”

¹⁵ They shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Have him crucified {Command your soldiers to nail him to a cross}!” Pilate said to them, “ He is your king! Do you really want me to tell my soldiers to nail him to a cross?” The chief priests replied, “The Emperor is our king! We do not have any other king!”

¹⁶ Then at last Pilate agreed to do what they wanted, and he told the soldiers to crucify Jesus. John 19:16b-24 Then the soldiers took Jesus away.

¹⁷ As they left, he himself was carrying the cross on which they were going to nail him. They went to a place called The Place of a Skull. In the Aramaic language it is called {they call it} Golgotha.

¹⁸ There, after removing most of his clothes, the soldiers nailed him to the cross. They also nailed two other criminals to crosses. There was one on each side, and Jesus was in the middle.

¹⁹ Pilate also had them write on a board a notice that stated why they were executing him, and fasten it to the cross. But all they wrote was ❛Jesus from Nazareth, the King of the Jews❜.

²⁰ Many Jews were able to read this sign, because the place where Jesus was nailed {where they nailed Jesus} to the cross was very close to Jerusalem, where many people had come for the celebration, and because it was written {they wrote it} in three languages: Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.

²¹ So the Jewish priests went back to Pilate and protested, saying to him, “Change what they have written from ‘The King of the Jews’ to ‘This man said that he is the King of the Jews’!”

²² Pilate replied, “What I told them to write is what they have written, and I will not change it.”

²³ After the soldiers nailed Jesus to the cross, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier. But they kept his cloak separate. This cloak had been woven from top to bottom from one piece of cloth.

²⁴ So they said to each other, “Let's not tear it. Instead, let's decide ◄ by throwing lots/ by gambling► who will get it.” So that is what the soldiers did. As a result, these words were fulfilled {they fulfilled these words} that the Psalmist had written in Scripture, They divided most of my clothes among themselves. They cast lots for one piece of my clothing.

²⁵ Near the cross where they had nailed Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and another Mary, the woman from Magdala village.

²⁶ Jesus saw his mother standing there. He also saw me standing nearby. Then he said to his mother, “This man will now be like your son.”

²⁷ And he said to me, “ Treat this woman as MET your mother.” So from that time I took her to my home and took care of her.

²⁸ Later, Jesus knew that everything that God sent him to do had now been completed {that he had now completed everything that God sent him to do}, but he knew that something else that was written in the Scriptures had to be fulfilled { that he had to fulfill something else that they had written in the Scriptures}. So he said, “I am thirsty!”

²⁹ There was a jar of sour wine there. So someone took a stalk of a plant called hyssop and fastened a sponge to it. Then he dipped the sponge into the wine and lifted it up to Jesus' lips.

³⁰ When Jesus tasted the sour wine, he shouted, “ I have finished all that I came to do!” Then he bowed his head and ◄died/handed over his spirit to God►.

³¹ That was the day that they prepared everything for their ◄ Sabbath/day of rest►. The next day was a special day of rest, because it was the day of rest during the Passover celebration. The Jewish leaders SYN did not want the bodies of the three men to remain on the cross during their ◄Sabbath/day of rest► because leaving bodies hanging overnight would be contrary to their Jewish laws. So they went to Pilate and asked him to command that the legs of the three men on the crosses be broken {the soldiers to break the legs of the three men on the crosses}, so that they would die quickly. Then their bodies could be taken down and buried {someone could take down their bodies and bury them}.

¹¹ Jesus answered, “You would have no power at all against me, unless it were given to you from above. Therefore he who delivered me to you has greater sin.”

¹² At this, Pilate was seeking to release him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you release this man, you aren’t Caesar’s friend! Everyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar!”

¹³ When Pilate therefore heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called “The Pavement”, but in Hebrew, “Gabbatha.”

¹⁴ Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, at about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold, your King!”

¹⁵ They cried out, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!”

¹⁶ So then he delivered him to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and led him away.

¹⁷ He went out, bearing his cross, to the place called “The Place of a Skull”, which is called in Hebrew, “Golgotha”,

¹⁸ where they crucified him, and with him two others, on either side one, and Jesus in the middle.

¹⁹ Pilate wrote a title also, and put it on the cross. There was written, “JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

²⁰ Therefore many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.

²¹ The chief priests of the Jews therefore said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘he said, “I am King of the Jews.”’”

²² Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

²³ Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

²⁴ Then they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it to decide whose it will be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled, which says, “They parted my garments among them. They cast lots for my clothing.” Therefore the soldiers did these things.

²⁵ But standing by Jesus’ cross were his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

²⁶ Therefore when Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”

²⁷ Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour, the disciple took her to his own home.

²⁸ After this, Jesus, seeing that all things were now finished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I am thirsty!”

²⁹ Now a vessel full of vinegar was set there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop, and held it at his mouth.

³⁰ When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

³¹ Therefore the Jews, because it was the Preparation Day, so that the bodies wouldn’t remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special one), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away.

⁴ Then Pilate went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I bring him out to you, that you may know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”

⁵ Jesus therefore came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment. Pilate said to them, “Behold, the man!”

⁶ When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him, they shouted, saying, “Crucify! Crucify!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no basis for a charge against him.”

⁷ The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.”

⁸ When therefore Pilate heard this saying, he was more afraid.

⁹ He entered into the Praetorium again, and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.

⁷ And the Jews made answer, We have a law, and by that law it is right for him to be put to death because he said he was the Son of God.

⁸ When this saying came to Pilate's ears his fear became greater;

⁹ And he went again into the Praetorium and said to Jesus, Where do you come from? But Jesus gave him no answer.

¹⁰ Then Pilate said to him, You say nothing to me? is it not clear to you that I have power to let you go free and power to put you to death on the cross?

¹¹ Jesus gave this answer: You would have no power at all over me if it was not given to you by God; so that he who gave me up to you has the greater sin.

¹² Hearing this, Pilate had a desire to let him go free, but the Jews said in a loud voice, If you let this man go, you are not Caesar's friend: everyone who makes himself a king goes against Caesar.

¹³ So when these words came to Pilate's ear, he took Jesus out, seating himself in the judge's seat in a place named in Hebrew, Gabbatha, or the Stone Floor.

¹⁴ (It was the day when they made ready for the Passover; and it was about the sixth hour.) And he said to the Jews, There is your King!

¹⁵ Then they gave a loud cry, Away with him! away with him! to the cross! Pilate said to them, Am I to put your King to death on the cross? The chief priests said in answer, We have no king but Caesar.

¹⁸ Where they put him on the cross with two others, one on this side and one on that, and Jesus in the middle.

¹⁹ And Pilate put on the cross a statement in writing. The writing was: JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

²⁰ The writing was seen by a number of the Jews, for the place where Jesus was put to death on the cross was near the town; and the writing was in Hebrew and Latin and Greek.

²¹ Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Do not put, The King of the Jews, but, He said, I am the King of the Jews.

²² But Pilate made answer, What I have put in writing will not be changed.

²³ And when Jesus was nailed to the cross, the men of the army took his clothing, and made a division of it into four parts, to every man a part, and they took his coat: now the coat was without a join, made out of one bit of cloth.

²⁴ So they said among themselves, Let this not be cut up, but let us put it to the decision of chance and see who gets it. (They did this so that the Writings might come true, which say, They made a distribution of my clothing among them, and my coat they put to the decision of chance.) This was what the men of the army did.

²⁵ Now by the side of the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister Mary, the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene.

²⁶ So when Jesus saw his mother and the disciple who was dear to him, he said to his mother, Mother, there is your son!

²⁷ Then he said to the disciple, There is your mother! And from that hour the disciple took her to his house.

²⁸ After this, being conscious that all things had now been done so that the Writings might come true, Jesus said, Give me water.

²⁹ Now there was a vessel ready, full of bitter wine, and they put a sponge full of it on a stick and put it to his mouth.

³⁰ So when Jesus had taken the wine he said, All is done. And with his head bent he gave up his spirit.

³¹ Now it was the day of getting ready for the Passover, and so that the bodies might not be on the cross on the Sabbath (because the day of that Sabbath was a great day), the Jews made a request to Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

⁴ And Pilate went out again and says to them, Lo, I bring him out to you, that ye may know that I find in him no fault whatever.

¹⁴ And it was the parasceve of the pasch, about the sixth hour, and he saith to the Jews: Behold your king.

¹⁵ But they cried out: Away with him; away with him; crucify him. Pilate saith to them: Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered: We have no king but Caesar.

¹⁶ Then therefore he delivered him to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him forth.

¹⁷ And bearing his own cross, he went forth to that place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew Golgotha.

¹⁸ Where they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side, and Jesus in the midst.

⁹ So back into the Praetorium he went and says to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus did not answer him.

¹⁰ So Pilate says to Him: “Are you not speaking to me? Don't you know that I have authority to crucify you and authority to release you?”

¹¹ Jesus answered: “You would have no authority over me at all if it had not been given to you from Above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”

¹² From that moment Pilate really tried to release Him; but the Jews kept shouting, saying: “If you release this fellow you are no friend of Caesar's! Whoever makes himself a king is opposing Caesar!”

¹³ Well, upon hearing this statement Pilate led Jesus outside and sat down on the judgment seat, in a place called ‘Stone Pavement’, while in Hebrew ‘Gabatha’

¹⁴ (now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; the hour was about six a.m.), and he says to the Jews, “Look at your king!”

¹⁵ But they shouted, “Out! Out! Crucify him!” Pilate says to them, “Shall I crucify your king?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!”

¹⁶ So then he handed Him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and lead Him away.

¹⁷ And carrying His cross He went out to the place called ‘Skull’, which in Hebrew is called ‘Golgotha’;

¹⁸ there they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle.

¹⁹ Now Pilate had also written a notice, and put it on the cross; and the inscription was: JESUS THE NATSOREAN THE KING OF THE JEWS.

²⁰ So many of the Jews read this notice, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; further, it was written in Hebrew, Greek and Latin!

²¹ So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Don't write, ‘The king of the Jews’, but that the fellow said, ‘I am the king of the Jews.’ ”

²² Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written!”

²⁸ After this, knowing that everything was now accomplished so that the Scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus says, “I'm thirsty!”

²⁹ Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; so they filled a sponge with sour wine, placed it on a hyssop, and put it to His mouth.

³⁰ Then, when He had received the sour wine, Jesus said, “Paid in full!!” And bowing His head He dismissed His spirit.

³¹ Now then, because it was Preparation Day, so that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews requested Pilate that their legs might be broken and they be removed.

⁴ Pilate went outside once more and said to them, “I'm bringing him out here to you so you'll know I find him not guilty of any crime.”

⁵ Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. “Look, here's the man,” said Pilate.

⁶ When the chief priests and the guards saw Jesus, they shouted out, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” “You take him and crucify him,” Pilate answered. “I find him not guilty.”

⁷ The Jewish leaders replied, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die because he claimed to be the Son of God.”

⁸ When Pilate heard this he was more afraid than ever,

⁹ and he went back into the governor's palace. He asked Jesus, “Where do you come from?” But Jesus didn't respond.

¹⁰ “Are you refusing to talk to me?” Pilate said to him. “Don't you realize that I have the power to have you released or to crucify you?”

¹¹ “You would have no power over me unless it had been given to you from above,” Jesus answered. “Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of the greater sin.”

¹² When Pilate heard this he tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders shouted, “If you set this man free you're not Caesar's friend. Anyone who sets himself up as a king is rebelling against Caesar.”

¹³ When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus outside and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called Stone Pavement (Gabbatha in Hebrew).

¹⁴ It was around noon on the preparation day before the Passover. “Look, here is your king,” he said to the Jews.

¹⁵ “Kill him! Kill him! Crucify him!” they screamed out. “Do you want me to crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “The only king we have is Caesar,” the chief priests replied.

¹⁶ So he handed Jesus over to them to be crucified.

¹⁷ They led Jesus away, who carried his own cross, and went out to the “Place of the Skull,” (Golgotha in Hebrew).

¹⁸ They crucified him there, and two others with him: one on either side, with Jesus between them.

¹⁹ Pilate had a notice made and placed on the cross which said, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”

²⁰ Many people read the notice because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.

²¹ Then the chief priests came to Pilate and asked him, “Don't write ‘the King of the Jews,’ but ‘This man said I am the King of the Jews.’”

²² Pilate replied, “What I have written I have written.”

²³ When the soldiers had crucified Jesus they took his clothes and divided them in four so that each soldier had his share. There was also his robe, made without seams, woven in one piece.

²⁴ So they said to each other, “Let's not tear it, but let's decide who will have it by rolling dice.” This fulfilled the Scripture that says, “They divided my garments among them and rolled dice for my clothing.”

²⁵ So that is what the soldiers did. Standing near the cross was Jesus' mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene.

²⁶ When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Mother, this is your son.”

²⁷ Then he said to the disciple, “This is your mother.” From then on the disciple took her into his home.

²⁸ Jesus now realized that he had finished all that he had come to do. In fulfillment of Scripture, he said, “I'm thirsty.”

²⁹ A jar of wine vinegar was standing there, so they soaked a sponge in the vinegar, put it on a hyssop stick, and held it to his lips.

³⁰ After he'd had the vinegar, Jesus said, “It's finished!” Then he bowed his head and breathed his last.

³¹ It was preparation day, and the Jewish leaders didn't want to leave the bodies on the crosses during the Sabbath day (in fact this was a special Sabbath), so they asked Pilate to break the legs, so that the bodies could be removed.

⁴ Then Pilate went foorth againe, and said vnto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may knowe, that I finde no fault in him at all.

²³ Then the souldiers, when they had crucified Iesus, tooke his garments (and made foure partes, to euery souldier a part) and his coat: and the coat was without seame wouen from the toppe throughout.

²⁴ Therefore they sayde one to another, Let vs not deuide it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be. This was that the Scripture might be fulfilled, which sayth, They parted my garments among them, and on my coate did cast lots. So the souldiers did these things in deede.

³⁰ Nowe when Iesus had receiued of the vineger, he saide, It is finished, and bowed his head, and gaue vp the ghost.

³¹ The Iewes then (because it was the Preparation, that the bodies should not remaine vpon the crosse on the Sabbath day: for that Sabbath was an hie day) besought Pilate that their legges might be broken, and that they might be taken downe.

⁹ He entered into the Praetorium again, and said to Yeshua Salvation, “Where are you from?” But Yeshua Salvation gave him no answer.

¹⁰ Pilate Armed with javelin therefore said to him, “Are not you speaking to me? Don’t you know that I have power to release you, and have power to crucify you?”

¹¹ Yeshua Salvation answered, “You would have no power at all against me, unless it were given to you from above. Therefore he who delivered me to you has greater sin.”

¹² At this, Pilate Armed with javelin was seeking to release him, but the Jews Praisers cried out, saying, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s Ruler’s friend! Everyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar Ruler!”

¹³ When Pilate Armed with javelin therefore heard these words, he brought Yeshua Salvation out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called “The Pavement,” but in Hebrew Immigrant, “Gabbatha.”

¹⁴ Now it was the Preparation Day for Pesac ·Passover· (Nissan 14), at about three o'clock in the afternoon. He said to the Jews Praisers, “Behold, your King!”

¹⁵ They cried out, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate Armed with javelin said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar Ruler!”

¹⁶ So then he delivered him to them to be nailed to the execution-stake. So they took Yeshua Salvation and led him away.

¹⁷ He went out, bearing his execution-stake, to the place called “Skull,” which is called in Hebrew Immigrant, “Golgotha Place of skull,”

¹⁸ where they nailed him to the stake, and with him two others, on either side one, and Yeshua Salvation in the middle.

¹⁹ Pilate Armed with javelin wrote a title also, and put it on the execution-stake. There was written, “Yeshua of nazareth Salvation of Branch, Separated one, The King of The Jews Praisers .”

²⁰ Therefore many of the Jews Praisers read this title, for the place where Yeshua Salvation was executed on the stake was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew Immigrant, in Latin, and in Greek.

²¹ The chief priests of the Jews Praisers therefore said to Pilate Armed with javelin, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews Praisers,’ but, ‘he said, I am King of the Jews Praisers.’”

²² Pilate Armed with javelin answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

²³ Then the soldiers, when they had nailed Yeshua Salvation to the stake, took his garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also the coat. Now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

²⁴ Then they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it to decide whose it will be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled, which says, “They divided my garments among them. For my cloak they cast lots.” Therefore the soldiers did these things.

²⁵ But there were standing by the execution-stake of Yeshua Salvation his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary Rebellion the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala Rebellion of City tower.

²⁶ Therefore when Yeshua Salvation saw his mother, and the disciple whom he felt agapao ·totally devoted love· for standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”

²⁷ Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour, the disciple took her to his own home.

²⁸ After this, Yeshua Salvation, seeing that all things were now finished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I am thirsty.”

²⁹ Now a vessel full of vinegar was set; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop, and held it at his mouth.

³⁰ When Yeshua Salvation therefore had received the vinegar, he said, “It is finished.” He bowed his head, and gave up his spirit.

³¹ Therefore the Jews Praisers, because it was the Preparation Day (Nissan 14), so that the bodies would not remain on the execution-stake on the festival Sabbath ·To cease· (for that Sabbath ·To cease· was a special one), asked of Pilate Armed with javelin that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

⁴ Pylate went forthe agayne and sayde vnto them: beholde I bringe him forth to you that ye maye knowe that I fynde no faute in him.

⁵ Then came Iesus forthe wearynge a croune of thorne and a robe of purple. And Pylate sayd vnto them: beholde the man.

⁶ When the hye Prestes and ministres sawe him they cryed sayinge: crucify him crucify him. Pylate sayde vnto them. Take ye him and crucify him: for I fynde no cause in him.

⁷ The Iewes answered him. We have a lawe and by oure lawe he ought to dye: because he made him selfe the sonne of God.

⁸ When Pylate hearde that sayinge he was the moare afrayde

⁹ and went agayne into the iudgment hall and sayde vnto Iesus: whence arte thou? But Iesus gave him none answere.

¹⁰ Then sayde Pylate vnto him. Speakest thou not vnto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify the and have power to lowse the?

¹¹ Iesus answered: Thou couldest have no power at all agaynst me except it were geven the from above. Therfore he that delyvered me vnto the is moare in synne.

¹² And from thence forthe sought Pylate meanes to lowse him: but the Iewes cryed sayinge: yf thou let him goo thou arte not Cesars frende. For whosoever maketh hi selfe a kynge is agaynst Cesar

¹⁹ And Pylate wrote his tytle and put it on the crosse. The writynge was Iesus of Nazareth kynge of the Iewes. This tytle reed many of the Iewes.

²⁰ For the place where Iesus was crucified was nye to the cite. And it was written in Hebrue Greke and Latyn.

²¹ Then sayde the hye prestes of the Iewes to Pylate: wryte not kynge of the Iewes: but that he sayde I am kynge of the Iewes.

²⁸ After that when Iesus perceaved that all thinges were performed: that the scripture myght be fulfilled he sayde: I thyrst.

²⁹ Ther stode a vessell full of veneger by. And they filled a sponge with veneger and wounde it about with ysope and put it to his mouth.

³⁰ Assone as Iesus had receaved of the veneger he sayd: It is fynesshed and bowed his heed and gaue vp the goost.

³¹ The Iewes then because it was the saboth even that the bodyes shuld not remayne apon the crosse on the saboth daye (for that saboth daye was an hye daye) besought Pylate that their legges myght be broken and that they myght be taken doune.

⁴ Then Pilate went outside again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him outside to you so that you will know that I find no guilt in him.”

⁸ When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid,

⁹ and he entered the government headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where do you come from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.

¹⁰ Then Pilate said to him, “Are you not speaking to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you, and power to crucify you?”

¹¹ Jesus answered him, “You do not have any power over me except for what has been given to you from above. Therefore, he who gave me over to you has a greater sin.”

¹² At this answer, Pilate tried to release him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you release this man, you are not a friend of Caesar. Everyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”

¹⁵ They cried out, “Away with him, away with him; crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Should I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”

¹⁷ Then they took Jesus, and he went out, carrying the cross for himself, to the place called “The Place of a Skull,” which in Hebrew is called “Golgotha.”

¹⁸ They crucified Jesus there, and with him two other men, one on each side, with Jesus in the middle.

¹⁹ Pilate also wrote a sign and put it on the cross. There it was written: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

²⁰ Many of the Jews read this sign because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city. The sign was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.

²¹ Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but rather, 'This one said, “I am King of the Jews.”'”

¹² At this, Pilate was seeking to release him, but the Judeans cried out, saying, “If you release this man, you aren’t Caesar’s friend! Everyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar!”

¹³ When Pilate therefore heard these words, he brought Yeshua out and sat down on the judgement seat at a place called “The Pavement”, but in Hebrew, “Gabbatha.”

¹⁴ Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, at about the sixth hour. He said to the Judeans, “Behold, your King!”

¹⁵ They cried out, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!”

¹⁶ So then he delivered him to them to be crucified. So they took Yeshua and led him away.

¹⁷ He went out, bearing his cross, to the place called “The Place of a Skull”, which is called in Hebrew, “Golgotha”,

¹⁸ where they crucified him, and with him two others, on either side one, and Yeshua in the middle.

¹⁹ Pilate wrote a title also, and put it on the cross. There was written, “YESHUA OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

²⁰ Therefore many of the Judeans read this title, for the place where Yeshua was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.

²¹ The chief priests of the Judeans therefore said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘he said, “I am King of the Jews.”’”

²² Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

²³ Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Yeshua, took his garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

²⁴ Then they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it to decide whose it will be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled, which says, “They parted my garments amongst them. They cast lots for my clothing.” Therefore the soldiers did these things.

²⁵ But standing by Yeshua’s cross were his mother, his mother’s sister, Miriam the wife of Klofah, and Miriam Magdalene.

²⁶ Therefore when Yeshua saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”

²⁷ Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour, the disciple took her to his own home.

²⁸ After this, Yeshua, seeing that all things were now finished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I am thirsty!”

²⁹ Now a vessel full of vinegar was set there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop, and held it at his mouth.

³⁰ When Yeshua therefore had received the vinegar, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

³¹ Therefore the Judeans, because it was the Preparation Day, so that the bodies wouldn’t remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special one), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away.

⁴ Again Pilate went out, and said to them, Lo! I bring him out to you, that ye know, that I find no cause in him.

⁵ And so Jesus went out, bearing a crown of thorns, and a cloth of purple. And he saith to them, Lo! the man.

⁶ But when the bishops and ministers had seen him, they cried, and said, Crucify, crucify him. Pilate saith to them, Take ye him, and crucify ye him, for I find no cause in him.

⁷ The Jews answered to him, We have a law, and by the law he oweth to die, for he made him God’s Son.

⁸ Therefore when Pilate had heard this word, he dreaded the more or he dreaded more.

⁹ And he went into the moot hall again, and said to Jesus, Of whence art thou? But Jesus gave none answer to him.

¹⁰ Pilate saith to him, Speakest thou not to me? Knowest thou not, that I have power to crucify thee, and I have power to deliver thee?

¹¹ Jesus answered, Thou shouldest not have any power against me, but it were given to thee from above; there-fore he that betook me to thee, hath the more sin.

¹² From that time Pilate sought to deliver him; but the Jews cried, and said, If thou deliverest this man, thou art not the emperor’s friend or the friend of Caesar; for each man that maketh himself king, gainsaith the emperor or against-saith Caesar.

¹³ And Pilate, when he had heard these words, led Jesus forth, and sat for doomsman in a place, that is said Lycostratos, but in Hebrew Golgotha (or Gabbatha).

¹⁴ And it was pask eve or the making ready, or even, of pask, as it were the sixth hour, or midday. And he saith to the Jews, Lo! your king.

¹⁵ But they cried, and said, Take away, take away, or Do away, do away; crucify him. Pilate saith to them, Shall I crucify your king? The bishops answered, We have no king but the emperor or Caesar.

¹⁶ And then Pilate betook him to them, that he should be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him out.

¹⁸ where they crucified him, and others twain with him, one on this side and one on that side, and Jesus in the middle.

¹⁹ And Pilate wrote a title, and set or put on the cross; and it was written, Jesus of Nazareth, king of Jews.

²⁰ Therefore many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified, was nigh the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

²¹ Therefore the bishops of the Jews said to Pilate, Do not thou write king of Jews, but that he said, I am king of Jews.

²² Pilate answered, That that I have written, I have written.

²³ Therefore the knights when they had crucified him, took his clothes, and made four parts, to each knight a part, and a coat. And the coat was without seam, and woven all about.

²⁴ Therefore they said together, Cut we not it, but cast we lot, whose it is; that the scripture be fulfilled, saying, They parted my clothes to them, and on my cloth they cast lot. And the knights did these things.

²⁵ But beside the cross of Jesus stood his mother, and the sister of his mother, Mary Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

²⁶ Therefore when Jesus had seen his mother, and the disciple standing, whom he loved, he saith to his mother, Woman, lo! thy son.

²⁷ Afterward he saith to the disciple, Lo! thy mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his mother.

²⁸ Afterward Jesus witting, that now all things be ended, that the scripture were fulfilled, he saith, I thirst.

²⁹ And a vessel was set full of vinegar or eisell. And they laid in hyssop about the sponge full of vinegar, and put to his mouth./And they took a sponge full of eisell, putting it about with hyssop, and proffered it to his mouth.

³⁰ Therefore when Jesus had taken the vinegar, he said, It is ended. And when his head was bowed down, he gave up the ghost./And when Jesus had tasted this eisell, he said, It is ended. And he bowed down the head, and sent out the spirit.

³¹ Therefore for it was the pask eve, that the bodies should not abide or dwell on the cross in the sabbath, for that was a great sabbath day, the Jews prayed Pilate, that the hips of them should be broken, and they should be taken away.

⁴ Again Pilate went out, and said to them, Lo! I bring him out to you, that ye know, that I find no cause (or crime worthy of death) in him. (And Pilate went out again, and said to them, Behold! I bring him back out to you now, so that ye know, that I find no case against him.)

⁹ And he went into the moot hall again, and said to Jesus, Of whence art thou? (or And he went into the Hall of Judgement again, and said to Jesus, Where do you come from?) But Jesus gave none answer to him or Forsooth Jesus gave not (an) answer to him.

¹⁰ Pilate saith to him, Speakest thou not to me? Knowest thou not, that I have power to crucify thee, and I have power to deliver thee? (or Knowest thou not, that I have the power to crucify thee, and I have the power to release thee or to let thee go?)

¹¹ Jesus answered, Thou shouldest not have any power against me, no but it were given to thee from above; therefore he that betook me to thee, hath the more sin, (or and so he who delivered me, or who handed me over to thee, hath done the greater sin).

¹² From that time Pilate sought to deliver him (or From that moment on, Pilate sought to release him); but the Jews cried, and said, If thou deliverest this man, thou art not the emperor’s friend; for each man that maketh himself king, gainsaith the emperor, or If thou leavest this man, (or if thou lettest this man go), thou art not the friend of Caesar; for each man that maketh himself king, against-saith Caesar.

And the soldiers did these things.)

¹⁰ Pilat seith to him, Spekist thou not to me? Woost thou not, that Y haue power to crucifie thee, and Y haue power to delyuere thee?

¹¹ Jhesus answeride, Thou schuldist not `haue ony power ayens me, but it were youun to thee from aboue; therfor he that bitook me to thee, hath the more synne.

¹² Fro that tyme Pilat souyte to delyuere hym; but the Jewis crieden, and seiden, If thou delyuerist this man, thou art not the emperouris freend; for ech man that makith hym silf king, ayen seith the emperoure.

¹³ And Pilat, whanne he hadde herd these wordis, ledde Jhesu forth, and sat for domesman in a place, that is seid Licostratos, but in Ebrew Golgatha.

¹⁷ And he bar to hym silf a cros, and wente out in to that place, that is seid of Caluarie, in Ebreu Golgatha;

¹⁸ where thei crucifieden him, and othere tweyne with him, oon on this side and oon on that side, and Jhesus in the myddil.

¹⁹ And Pilat wroot a title, and sette on the cros; and it was writun, Jhesu of Nazareth, king of Jewis.

²⁰ Therfor manye of the Jewis redden this title, for the place where Jhesus was crucified, was niy the citee, and it was writun in Ebreu, Greek, and Latyn.

²¹ Therfor the bischops of the Jewis seiden to Pilat, Nyle thou write kyng of Jewis, but for he seide, Y am king of Jewis.

²² Pilat answeride, That that Y haue writun, Y haue writun.

²³ Therfor the knyytis whanne thei hadden crucified hym, token hise clothis, and maden foure partis, to ech knyyt a part, and a coot. And the coot was without seem, and wouun al aboute.

²⁴ Therfor thei seiden togidere, Kitte we not it, but caste we lot, whos it is; that the scripture be fulfillid, seiynge, Thei partiden my clothis to hem, and on my cloth thei casten lot. And the kniytis diden these thingis.

²⁵ But bisidis the cros of Jhesu stoden his modir, and the sistir of his modir, Marie Cleofe, and Marie Maudeleyne.

²⁶ Therfor whanne Jhesu hadde seyn his modir, and the disciple stondynge, whom he louyde, he seith to hise modir, Womman, lo thi sone.

²⁷ Aftyrward he seith to the disciple, Lo! thi modir. And fro that our the disciple took hir in to his modir.

²⁸ Aftirward Jhesus witynge, that now alle thingis ben endid, that the scripture were fulfillid, he seith, Y thirste.

²⁹ And a vessel was set ful of vynegre. And thei `leiden in isope aboute the spounge ful of vynegre, and putten to his mouth.

³⁰ Therfor whanne Jhesus hadde `takun the vynegre, he seid, It is endid. And `whanne his heed was bowid doun, `he yaf vp the goost.

³¹ Therfor for it was the pask eue, that the bodies schulden not abide on the cros in the sabat, for that was a greet sabat dai, the Jewis preiden Pilat, that the hipis of hem schulden be brokun, and thei takun awei.

⁴ Pilate, therefore, again went forth without, and saith to them, 'Lo, I do bring him to you without, that ye may know that in him I find no fault;'

⁵ Jesus, therefore, came forth without, bearing the thorny crown and the purple garment; and he saith to them, 'Lo, the man!'

⁶ When, therefore, the chief priests and the officers did see him, they cried out, saying, 'Crucify, crucify;' Pilate saith to them, 'Take ye him — ye, and crucify; for I find no fault in him;'

⁷ the Jews answered him, 'We have a law, and according to our law he ought to die, for he made himself Son of God.'

⁸ When, therefore, Pilate heard this word, he was the more afraid,

⁹ and entered again to the praetorium, and saith to Jesus, 'Whence art thou?' and Jesus gave him no answer.

¹⁰ Pilate, therefore, saith to him, 'To me dost thou not speak? hast thou not known that I have authority to crucify thee, and I have authority to release thee?'

¹¹ Jesus answered, 'Thou wouldest have no authority against me, if it were not having been given thee from above; because of this, he who is delivering me up to thee hath greater sin.'

³⁰ when, therefore, Jesus received the vinegar, he said, 'It hath been finished;' and having bowed the head, gave up the spirit.

³¹ The Jews, therefore, that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, since it was the preparation, (for that sabbath day was a great one,) asked of Pilate that their legs may be broken, and they taken away.
