John 16:6-26 in American Standard Version (1901)

6 But because I have spoken these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you.
8 And he, when he is come, will convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 of sin, because they believe not on me;
10 of righteousness, because I go to the Father, and ye behold me no more;
11 of judgment, because the prince of this world hath been judged.
12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come.
14 He shall glorify me: for he shall take of mine, and shall declare it unto you.
15 All things whatsoever the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he taketh of mine, and shall declare it unto you.
16 A little while, and ye behold me no more; and again a little while, and ye shall see me.
17 Some of his disciples therefore said one to another, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye behold me not; and again a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? We know not what he saith.
19 Jesus perceived that they were desirous to ask him, and he said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves concerning this, that I said, A little while, and ye behold me not, and again a little while, and ye shall see me?
20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, that ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but when she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for the joy that a man is born into the world.
22 And ye therefore now have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one taketh away from you.
23 And in that day ye shall ask me no question. Verily, verily, I say unto you, If ye shall ask anything of the Father, he will give it you in my name.
24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be made full.
25 These things have I spoken unto you in dark sayings: the hour cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in dark sayings, but shall tell you plainly of the Father.
26 In that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you;

6 Instead, because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart.
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it’s to your advantage that I go away; because if I don’t go away, the Counselor won’t come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
8 When He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 of sin, because they don’t believe in me;
10 of righteousness, because I go to my Father and you see me no more;
11 and of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
12 “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now.
13 However, when the Spirit of truth has come, He will guide you into all truth. He won’t speak on His own, but whatever He hears He will speak. He will announce things to come.
14 He will glorify me, because He will take from what is mine and reveal it to you.
15 Everything that the Father has is mine. That is why I said that He will take from what is mine and reveal it to you.
16 “In a little while, you won’t see me; and in a little while longer, you will see me again, because I go to the Father.”
17 Then some of Jesus’ disciples said among themselves, “What does He mean by, ‘In a little while, and you won’t see me; and in a little while longer, you will see me, again;’ and, ‘because I go to the Father’?”
18 They kept asking, “What does He mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what He is saying.”
19 Now Jesus knew that they wanted to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you asking yourselves about what I said, ‘In a little while, and you won’t see me; and in a little while longer, you will see me, again’?
20 Most assuredly, I tell you that you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice. You will be sad, but your sadness will be turned into joy.
21 A woman in labor is in pain because her time has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the baby, she forgets the agony, for joy that a child has been born into the world.
22 Therefore you have sorrow now, too, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and nobody will take your joy away from you.
23 “In that day you will ask me nothing. Most assuredly, I tell you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you.
24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
25 “I’ve told you these things in figures of speech, but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but I will tell you plainly about the Father.
26 In that day you will ask in my name. I don’t tell you that I’ll ask the Father for you,

6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?

6 Instead, because I have told you these things, you are very sad.
7 But the truth is that it is good for you that I am going away, because if I do not go away, the Holy Spirit, who will ◄encourage/be like a legal counsel for► you will not come to you. But when I go, I will send him to you.
8 When he comes, he will prove that those who do not belong to God MTY are wrong about what is sinful and about who is really righteous and about whom God will judge and condemn for their sin.
9 He will tell people that their greatest sin is that they do not believe in me.
10 He will tell people that because I am going back to my Father, and you will no longer see me, you will know that I am the one who was truly righteous.
11 He will tell people that the fact that God has already determined that he will punish Satan, the one who rules this world, shows that some day God will also punish those who do not belong to him.
12 I have many more things that I would like to tell you, but you are not able to accept them now.
13 But God's Spirit is the one who will teach you God's truth. When he comes, he will guide you so that you understand all spiritual truth. He will not speak from his own authority. Instead, it is the things that he hears my Father say that he will tell you. He will also tell you about things that will happen later.
14 He will honor me by revealing my truth to you.
15 Everything that my Father has is mine. That is why I said that the Spirit is able to reveal my truth to you.”
16 “After a short time I will leave you, and you will not see me. Then a short time after that you will see me again.”
17 So some of us said to each other, “What does he mean by saying ‘After a short time you will not see me,’ and ‘A short time after that you will see me again’? And what does he mean by ‘Because I am going back to my Father’?”
18 We kept asking each other, “What does he mean by saying ‘After a little while’? We do not understand what he is saying.”
19 Jesus realized that we wanted to ask him about that. So he said to us, “You are asking RHQ each other what I meant when I said, ‘After a short time you will not see me, and then a short time after that you will see me again.’
20 Listen to this carefully: After I ◄ leave you/die►, those who oppose God MTY will be happy, but you will be sad. But later you will stop being sad and you will become joyful.
21 A woman who is about to bear a child feels pain, because that is what happens MTY at that time. But after her baby is born, she forgets that pain, because she is very joyful that her child has been born.
22 It will be the same with you. I will soon die and you will be sad. But after that, I will see you again. Then you will be joyful, and no one will be able to stop you from being joyful.
23 When that happens, you will not ask me any questions about anything. Listen to this carefully: After that happens, my Father will do for you anything you ask, because of his relationship with me MTY.
24 Up to the present time, using my authority you have not asked God to do anything for you MTY. Now keep asking him for things that you need. If you do that, you will receive them, and then you will be completely joyful.
25 Although I have been speaking these things using figurative language, there will soon be a time when I will no longer use that kind of language. Instead, I will tell you plainly ◄about my Father/what my Father wants►.
26 At that time, you will ask him for things ◄because you belong to me/with my authority► MTY. I will not need to ask my Father to do what you ask.

6 But your hearts are full of sorrow because I have said these things.
7 But what I am saying is true: my going is for your good: for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
8 And he, when he comes, will make the world conscious of sin, and of righteousness, and of being judged:
9 Of sin, because they have not faith in me;
10 Of righteousness, because I go to the Father and you will see me no more;
11 Of being judged, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
12 I have still much to say to you, but you are not strong enough for it now.
13 However, when he, the Spirit of true knowledge, has come, he will be your guide into all true knowledge: for his words will not come from himself, but whatever has come to his hearing, that he will say: and he will make clear to you the things to come.
14 He will give me glory, because he will take of what is mine, and make it clear to you.
15 Everything which the Father has is mine: that is why I say, He will take of what is mine and will make it clear to you.
16 After a little time you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me.
17 So some of the disciples said one to another, What is this he is saying, After a little time, you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me? and, I am going to the Father?
18 So they said again and again, What is this he is saying, A little time? His words are not clear to us.
19 Jesus saw that they had a desire to put the question to him, so he said to them, Is this what you are questioning one with another, why I said, After a little time, you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me?
20 Truly I say to you, You will be weeping and sorrowing, but the world will be glad: you will be sad, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.
21 When a woman is about to give birth she has sorrow, because her hour is come; but when she has given birth to the child, the pain is put out of her mind by the joy that a man has come into the world.
22 So you have sorrow now: but I will see you again, and your hearts will be glad, and no one will take away your joy.
23 And on that day you will put no questions to me. Truly I say to you, Whatever request you make to the Father, he will give it to you in my name.
24 Up to now you have made no request in my name: do so, and it will be answered, so that your hearts may be full of joy.
25 All this I have said to you in veiled language: but the time is coming when I will no longer say things in veiled language but will give you knowledge of the Father clearly.
26 In that day you will make requests in my name: and I do not say that I will make prayer to the Father for you,

6 But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
7 But I say the truth to you, It is profitable for you that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I go I will send him to you.
8 And having come, he will bring demonstration to the world, of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 of sin, because they do not believe on me;
10 of righteousness, because I go away to my Father, and ye behold me no longer;
11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
12 I have yet many things to say to you, but ye cannot bear them now.
13 But when he is come, the Spirit of truth, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but whatsoever he shall hear he shall speak; and he will announce to you what is coming.
14 He shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine and shall announce it to you.
15 All things that the Father has are mine; on account of this I have said that he receives of mine and shall announce it to you.
16 A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me, because I go away to the Father.
17 Some of his disciples therefore said to one another, What is this he says to us, A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me, and, Because I go away to the Father?
18 They said therefore, What is this which he says of the little while? We do not know of what he speaks.
19 Jesus knew therefore that they desired to demand of him, and said to them, Do ye inquire of this among yourselves that I said, A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me?
20 Verily, verily, I say to you, that ye shall weep and lament, ye, but the world shall rejoice; and ye will be grieved, but your grief shall be turned to joy.
21 A woman, when she gives birth to a child, has grief because her hour has come; but when the child is born, she no longer remembers the trouble, on account of the joy that a man has been born into the world.
22 And ye now therefore have grief; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one takes from you.
23 And in that day ye shall demand nothing of me: verily, verily, I say to you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give you.
24 Hitherto ye have asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
25 These things I have spoken to you in allegories; the hour is coming that I will no longer speak to you in allegories, but will declare to you openly concerning the Father.
26 In that day ye shall ask in my name; and I say not to you that I will demand of the Father for you,

6 But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
7 But I tell you the truth: it is expedient to you that I go: for if I go not, the Paraclete will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will teach you all truth. For he shall not speak of himself; but what things soever he shall hear, he shall speak; and the things that are to come, he shall shew you.

15 All things whatsoever the Father hath, are mine. Therefore I said, that he shall receive of mine, and shew it to you.
16 A little while, and now you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me: because I go to the Father.
17 Then some of the disciples said one to another: What is this that he saith to us: A little while, and you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me, and, because I go to the Father?
18 They said therefore: What is this that he saith, A little while? we know not what he speaketh.
19 And Jesus knew that they had a mind to ask him; and he said to them: Of this do you inquire among yourselves, because I said: A little while, and you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me?
20 Amen, amen I say to you, that you shall lament and weep, but the world shall rejoice; and you shall be made sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
21 A woman, when she is in labour, hath sorrow, because her hour is come; but when she hath brought forth the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
22 So also you now indeed have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice; and your joy no man shall take from you.
23 And in that day you shall not ask me any thing. Amen, amen I say to you: if you ask the Father any thing in my name, he will give it you.
24 Hitherto you have not asked any thing in my name. Ask, and you shall receive; that your joy may be full.
25 These things I have spoken to you in proverbs. The hour cometh, when I will no more speak to you in proverbs, but will shew you plainly of the Father.
26 In that day you shall ask in my name; and I say not to you, that I will ask the Father for you:

6 But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
7 Nevertheless I speak the truth to you. It is profitable for you that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
8 And when He comes, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me;

15 All things which the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He takes from what is Mine and will announce it to you.

6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

John 16:6-26 in Free Bible Version

6 Of course, now that I've told you, you're full of grief.
7 But I'm telling you the truth: it's better for you that I go away, for if I don't the Comforter won't come to you. If I go away, I will send him to you.
8 When he comes, he will convince those in the world that they have wrong ideas regarding sin, about what is right, and about judgment:
9 Sin, for they don't trust in me.
10 What is right, for I'm going to the Father and you won't see me any longer.
11 Judgment, for the ruler of this world has been condemned.
12 There's much more I want to explain to you, but you couldn't stand it now.
13 However, when the Spirit of truth comes, he will teach you the whole truth. He doesn't speak for himself, but he only says what he hears, and he will tell you what's going to happen.
14 He brings me glory for he teaches you whatever he receives from me.
15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. This is why I said that the Spirit teaches you whatever he receives from me.
16 In a little while you won't see me anymore, but then a little while after that you will see me.”
17 Some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean, ‘In a little while you won't see me, but a little while after that you will see me’? and ‘For I'm going to the Father’?”
18 They were asking, “What does he mean by ‘in a little while’? We don't know what he's talking about.”
19 Jesus realized that they wanted to ask him about this. So he asked them, “Are you wondering about my comment, ‘In a little while you won't see me, but a little while after that you will see me’?
20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will turn into joy.
21 A woman in labor suffers pain because her time has come, but once the baby is born, she forgets the agony because of the joy that a child has been brought into the world.
22 Yes, you're grieving now, but I will see you again; and you will rejoice, and no one can take away your joy.
23 When that time comes you won't need to ask me for anything. I tell you the truth, the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.
24 Until now you haven't asked for anything in my name, so ask and you shall receive, and your happiness will be complete.
25 I've been talking to you using picture language. But soon I won't use such picture language any more when I speak to you. Instead I'll explain the Father to you very plainly.
26 At that time you will ask in my name. I'm not saying to you that I will plead with the Father on your behalf,

21 A woman when she traveyleth hath sorowe because her houre is come: but assone as she is delivered of the chylde she remembreth no moare the anguysshe for ioye that a man is borne in to the worlde.
22 And ye now are in sorowe: but I will se you agayne and youre hertes shall reioyce and youre ioye shall no man take from you.
23 And in that daye shall ye axe me no question. Verely verely I saye vnto you whatsoever ye shall axe the father in my name he will geve it you.
24 Hitherto have ye axed nothinge in my name. Axe and ye shall receave it: that youre ioye maye be full.
25 These thinges have I spoken vnto you in proverbes. The tyme will come when I shall no moare speake to you in proverbes: but I shall shewe you playnly from my father.
26 At that daye shall ye axe in myne name. And I saye not vnto you that I will speake vnto my father for you.

6 But because I have said these things to you, sadness has filled your heart.
7 But truly I tell you, it is better for you that I go away. For if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you.
8 When he comes, the Comforter will prove the world to be wrong about sin, about righteousness, and about judgment—
9 about sin, because they do not believe in me;
10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, and you will no longer see me;
11 and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
12 I have many things to say to you, but you would not understand them now.
13 But when he, the Spirit of Truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak from himself. But he will say whatever he hears, and he will tell you things that are to come.
14 He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and he will tell it to you.
15 Everything that the Father has is mine. Therefore, I said that the Spirit will take from what is mine and he will tell it to you.
16 In a short amount of time you will no longer see me, and after another short amount of time you will see me.”
17 Then some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, 'A short amount of time you will no longer see me and after another short amount of time you will see me,' and, 'Because I go to the Father'?”
18 Therefore they said, “What is this that he says, 'A short amount of time'? We do not know what he is talking about.”
19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him, and he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, 'A little while and you will no longer see me, and again a little while and you will see me'?
20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will be glad. You will become full of sadness, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.
21 When a woman gives birth she has sadness because her hour has come, but when she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers her pain because of her joy that a man has been born into the world.
22 So you have sadness now, but I will see you again, and your heart will be glad, and no one will be able to take away your joy from you.
23 On that day you will not ask me anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.
24 Until now you have not asked anything in my name. Ask, and you will receive so that your joy will be fulfilled.
25 I have said these things to you in figures of speech, but the hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but instead I will tell you plainly about the Father.
26 On that day you will ask in my name and I do not say to you that I will pray to the Father for you,

6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I depart; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send him to you.

15 'All things, as many as the Father hath, are mine; because of this I said, That of mine He will take, and will tell to you;
