John 16:1-29 in English

¹ These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be caused to stumble.

² They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you shall think that he offereth service unto God.

³ And these things will they do, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

⁴ But these things have I spoken unto you, that when their hour is come, ye may remember them, how that I told you. And these things I said not unto you from the beginning, because I was with you.

⁵ But now I go unto him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?

⁶ But because I have spoken these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

⁷ Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you.

⁸ And he, when he is come, will convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

⁹ of sin, because they believe not on me;

¹⁰ of righteousness, because I go to the Father, and ye behold me no more;

¹¹ of judgment, because the prince of this world hath been judged.

¹² I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

¹³ Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come.

¹⁴ He shall glorify me: for he shall take of mine, and shall declare it unto you.

¹⁵ All things whatsoever the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he taketh of mine, and shall declare it unto you.

¹⁶ A little while, and ye behold me no more; and again a little while, and ye shall see me.

¹⁷ Some of his disciples therefore said one to another, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye behold me not; and again a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?

¹⁸ They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? We know not what he saith.

¹⁹ Jesus perceived that they were desirous to ask him, and he said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves concerning this, that I said, A little while, and ye behold me not, and again a little while, and ye shall see me?

²⁰ Verily, verily, I say unto you, that ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

²¹ A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but when she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for the joy that a man is born into the world.

²² And ye therefore now have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one taketh away from you.

²³ And in that day ye shall ask me no question. Verily, verily, I say unto you, If ye shall ask anything of the Father, he will give it you in my name.

²⁴ Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be made full.

²⁵ These things have I spoken unto you in dark sayings: the hour cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in dark sayings, but shall tell you plainly of the Father.

²⁶ In that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you;

²⁷ for the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came forth from the Father.

²⁸ I came out from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go unto the Father.

²⁹ His disciples say, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no dark saying.

¹ “I have told you these things so that you may be kept from stumbling.

² They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that they are serving God.

³ They will do these things to you because they haven’t known the Father nor me.

⁴ I have told you these things, so that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you about them. I didn’t tell you these things at the beginning, because I was with you.

⁵ “Now I am going to Him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’

⁶ Instead, because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart.

⁷ Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it’s to your advantage that I go away; because if I don’t go away, the Counselor won’t come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

⁸ When He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

⁹ of sin, because they don’t believe in me;

¹⁰ of righteousness, because I go to my Father and you see me no more;

¹¹ and of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

¹² “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now.

¹³ However, when the Spirit of truth has come, He will guide you into all truth. He won’t speak on His own, but whatever He hears He will speak. He will announce things to come.

¹⁴ He will glorify me, because He will take from what is mine and reveal it to you.

¹⁵ Everything that the Father has is mine. That is why I said that He will take from what is mine and reveal it to you.

¹⁶ “In a little while, you won’t see me; and in a little while longer, you will see me again, because I go to the Father.”

¹⁷ Then some of Jesus’ disciples said among themselves, “What does He mean by, ‘In a little while, and you won’t see me; and in a little while longer, you will see me, again;’ and, ‘because I go to the Father’?”

¹⁸ They kept asking, “What does He mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what He is saying.”

¹⁹ Now Jesus knew that they wanted to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you asking yourselves about what I said, ‘In a little while, and you won’t see me; and in a little while longer, you will see me, again’?

²⁰ Most assuredly, I tell you that you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice. You will be sad, but your sadness will be turned into joy.

²¹ A woman in labor is in pain because her time has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the baby, she forgets the agony, for joy that a child has been born into the world.

²² Therefore you have sorrow now, too, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and nobody will take your joy away from you.

²³ “In that day you will ask me nothing. Most assuredly, I tell you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you.

²⁴ Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

²⁵ “I’ve told you these things in figures of speech, but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but I will tell you plainly about the Father.

²⁶ In that day you will ask in my name. I don’t tell you that I’ll ask the Father for you,

²⁷ because the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came forth from God.

²⁸ I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

²⁹ His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and not in figures of speech!

¹ These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.

¹ Jesus continued by saying to us, “I have told you these things in order that you will not stop trusting in me when people ◄ cause you to suffer/persecute you►.

² They will not allow you to worship in ◄synagogues/ their meeting places►. In fact, there will be a time when anyone who kills you will think that he is serving God by doing that.

³ They will do such things because they have never known who I really am, nor who my Father is.

⁴ I have told you these things in order that when they start ◄ to cause you to suffer/to persecute you► MTY, you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you these things when you first started to accompany me MTY because I was with you, and they were causing trouble for me, not for you.”

⁵ “Now I am about to return to the one who sent me. But I am disappointed that none of you is asking me, ‘Where are you going?’

⁶ Instead, because I have told you these things, you are very sad.

⁷ But the truth is that it is good for you that I am going away, because if I do not go away, the Holy Spirit, who will ◄encourage/be like a legal counsel for► you will not come to you. But when I go, I will send him to you.

⁸ When he comes, he will prove that those who do not belong to God MTY are wrong about what is sinful and about who is really righteous and about whom God will judge and condemn for their sin.

⁹ He will tell people that their greatest sin is that they do not believe in me.

¹⁰ He will tell people that because I am going back to my Father, and you will no longer see me, you will know that I am the one who was truly righteous.

¹¹ He will tell people that the fact that God has already determined that he will punish Satan, the one who rules this world, shows that some day God will also punish those who do not belong to him.

¹² I have many more things that I would like to tell you, but you are not able to accept them now.

¹³ But God's Spirit is the one who will teach you God's truth. When he comes, he will guide you so that you understand all spiritual truth. He will not speak from his own authority. Instead, it is the things that he hears my Father say that he will tell you. He will also tell you about things that will happen later.

¹⁴ He will honor me by revealing my truth to you.

¹⁵ Everything that my Father has is mine. That is why I said that the Spirit is able to reveal my truth to you.”

¹⁶ “After a short time I will leave you, and you will not see me. Then a short time after that you will see me again.”

¹⁷ So some of us said to each other, “What does he mean by saying ‘After a short time you will not see me,’ and ‘A short time after that you will see me again’? And what does he mean by ‘Because I am going back to my Father’?”

¹⁸ We kept asking each other, “What does he mean by saying ‘After a little while’? We do not understand what he is saying.”

¹⁹ Jesus realized that we wanted to ask him about that. So he said to us, “You are asking RHQ each other what I meant when I said, ‘After a short time you will not see me, and then a short time after that you will see me again.’

²⁰ Listen to this carefully: After I ◄ leave you/die►, those who oppose God MTY will be happy, but you will be sad. But later you will stop being sad and you will become joyful.

²¹ A woman who is about to bear a child feels pain, because that is what happens MTY at that time. But after her baby is born, she forgets that pain, because she is very joyful that her child has been born.

²² It will be the same with you. I will soon die and you will be sad. But after that, I will see you again. Then you will be joyful, and no one will be able to stop you from being joyful.

²³ When that happens, you will not ask me any questions about anything. Listen to this carefully: After that happens, my Father will do for you anything you ask, because of his relationship with me MTY.

²⁴ Up to the present time, using my authority you have not asked God to do anything for you MTY. Now keep asking him for things that you need. If you do that, you will receive them, and then you will be completely joyful.

²⁵ Although I have been speaking these things using figurative language, there will soon be a time when I will no longer use that kind of language. Instead, I will tell you plainly ◄about my Father/what my Father wants►.

²⁶ At that time, you will ask him for things ◄because you belong to me/with my authority► MTY. I will not need to ask my Father to do what you ask.

²⁷ My Father himself loves you because you have loved me and because you have believed that I came from God my Father, so he wants you to ask him (OR, so he does not need anyone to persuade him to help you)

²⁸ I came from my Father into this world. Very soon I will be leaving this world and going back to my Father.”

²⁹ Then we, his disciples, said, “Now you are speaking plainly, without using figurative language.

²⁷ for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came from God.

²⁸ I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”

²⁹ His disciples said to him, “Behold, now you are speaking plainly, and using no figures of speech.

¹ I have said these things to you so that you may not be in doubt.

² They will put you out of the Synagogues: yes, the time is coming when whoever puts you to death will have the belief that he is doing God's pleasure.

³ They will do these things to you because they have not had knowledge of the Father or of me.

⁴ I have said these things to you so that when the time comes, what I have said may come to your mind. I did not say them to you at the first, because then I was still with you.

⁵ But now I am going to him who sent me; and not one of you says to me, Where are you going?

⁶ But your hearts are full of sorrow because I have said these things.

⁷ But what I am saying is true: my going is for your good: for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

⁸ And he, when he comes, will make the world conscious of sin, and of righteousness, and of being judged:

⁹ Of sin, because they have not faith in me;

¹⁰ Of righteousness, because I go to the Father and you will see me no more;

¹¹ Of being judged, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

¹² I have still much to say to you, but you are not strong enough for it now.

¹³ However, when he, the Spirit of true knowledge, has come, he will be your guide into all true knowledge: for his words will not come from himself, but whatever has come to his hearing, that he will say: and he will make clear to you the things to come.

¹⁴ He will give me glory, because he will take of what is mine, and make it clear to you.

¹⁵ Everything which the Father has is mine: that is why I say, He will take of what is mine and will make it clear to you.

¹⁶ After a little time you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me.

¹⁷ So some of the disciples said one to another, What is this he is saying, After a little time, you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me? and, I am going to the Father?

¹⁸ So they said again and again, What is this he is saying, A little time? His words are not clear to us.

¹⁹ Jesus saw that they had a desire to put the question to him, so he said to them, Is this what you are questioning one with another, why I said, After a little time, you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me?

²⁰ Truly I say to you, You will be weeping and sorrowing, but the world will be glad: you will be sad, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.

²¹ When a woman is about to give birth she has sorrow, because her hour is come; but when she has given birth to the child, the pain is put out of her mind by the joy that a man has come into the world.

²² So you have sorrow now: but I will see you again, and your hearts will be glad, and no one will take away your joy.

²³ And on that day you will put no questions to me. Truly I say to you, Whatever request you make to the Father, he will give it to you in my name.

²⁴ Up to now you have made no request in my name: do so, and it will be answered, so that your hearts may be full of joy.

²⁵ All this I have said to you in veiled language: but the time is coming when I will no longer say things in veiled language but will give you knowledge of the Father clearly.

²⁶ In that day you will make requests in my name: and I do not say that I will make prayer to the Father for you,

²⁷ For the Father himself gives his love to you, because you have given your love to me and have had faith that I came from God.

²⁸ I came out from the Father and have come into the world: again, I go away from the world and go to the Father.

²⁹ His disciples said, Now you are talking clearly and not in veiled language.

¹ These things I have spoken unto you that ye may not be offended.

² They shall put you out of the synagogues; but the hour is coming that every one who kills you will think to render service to God;

³ and these things they will do because they have not known the Father nor me.

⁴ But I have spoken these things to you, that when their hour shall have come, ye may remember them, that I have said them unto you. But I did not say these things unto you from the beginning, because I was with you.

⁵ But now I go to him that has sent me, and none of you demands of me, Where goest thou?

⁶ But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

⁷ But I say the truth to you, It is profitable for you that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I go I will send him to you.

⁸ And having come, he will bring demonstration to the world, of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

⁹ of sin, because they do not believe on me;

¹⁰ of righteousness, because I go away to my Father, and ye behold me no longer;

¹¹ of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

¹² I have yet many things to say to you, but ye cannot bear them now.

¹³ But when he is come, the Spirit of truth, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but whatsoever he shall hear he shall speak; and he will announce to you what is coming.

¹⁴ He shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine and shall announce it to you.

¹⁵ All things that the Father has are mine; on account of this I have said that he receives of mine and shall announce it to you.

¹⁶ A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me, because I go away to the Father.

¹⁸ They said therefore, What is this which he says of the little while? We do not know of what he speaks.

²¹ A woman, when she gives birth to a child, has grief because her hour has come; but when the child is born, she no longer remembers the trouble, on account of the joy that a man has been born into the world.

²² And ye now therefore have grief; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one takes from you.

²³ And in that day ye shall demand nothing of me: verily, verily, I say to you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give you.

²⁴ Hitherto ye have asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

²⁵ These things I have spoken to you in allegories; the hour is coming that I will no longer speak to you in allegories, but will declare to you openly concerning the Father.

²⁶ In that day ye shall ask in my name; and I say not to you that I will demand of the Father for you,

²⁷ for the Father himself has affection for you, because ye have had affection for me, and have believed that I came out from God.

²⁸ I came out from the Father and have come into the world; again, I leave the world and go to the Father.

²⁹ His disciples say to him, Lo, now thou speakest openly and utterest no allegory.

¹ These things have I spoken to you, that you may not be scandalized.

² They will put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you, will think that he doth a service to God.

³ And these things will they do to you; because they have not known the Father, nor me.

⁴ But these things I have told you, that when the hour shall come, you may remember that I told you of them.

⁵ But I told you not these things from the beginning, because I was with you. And now I go to him that sent me, and none of you asketh me: Whither goest thou?

⁶ But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

⁷ But I tell you the truth: it is expedient to you that I go: for if I go not, the Paraclete will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

⁸ And when he is come, he will convince the world of sin, and of justice, and of judgment.

⁹ Of sin: because they believed not in me.

¹⁰ And of justice: because I go to the Father; and you shall see me no longer.

¹¹ And of judgment: because the prince of this world is already judged.

¹² I have yet many things to say to you: but you cannot bear them now.

²⁰ Amen, amen I say to you, that you shall lament and weep, but the world shall rejoice; and you shall be made sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

²¹ A woman, when she is in labour, hath sorrow, because her hour is come; but when she hath brought forth the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.

²² So also you now indeed have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice; and your joy no man shall take from you.

²³ And in that day you shall not ask me any thing. Amen, amen I say to you: if you ask the Father any thing in my name, he will give it you.

²⁴ Hitherto you have not asked any thing in my name. Ask, and you shall receive; that your joy may be full.

²⁵ These things I have spoken to you in proverbs. The hour cometh, when I will no more speak to you in proverbs, but will shew you plainly of the Father.

²⁶ In that day you shall ask in my name; and I say not to you, that I will ask the Father for you:

² They will excommunicate you; but the time is coming when everyone who kills you will think that he is offering God a service.

³ And these things they will do to you because they did not know the Father nor Me.

⁴ But these things I have spoken to you, so that when the time comes, you may remember them, that I told you. But these things I did not say to you from the beginning, because I was with you.

⁵ “But now I am going to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’

⁶ But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

⁷ Nevertheless I speak the truth to you. It is profitable for you that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.

¹⁷ Then some of His disciples said to one another, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while and you will not see Me; and again a little while and you will see Me’; and, ‘I am going to the Father’?”

¹⁸ Therefore they said, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not understand what He is saying.”

¹⁹ Now Jesus knew that they were desiring to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you inquiring with one another that I said, ‘A little while and you will not see Me; and again a little while and you will see Me’?

²⁹ His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech!

¹ “I have spoken these things to you to avoid your being caused to stumble

² —they will excommunicate you; indeed, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering God service!

³ And they will do these things because they have not known either the Father or me.

⁴ Now I have told you these things so that when the time comes you may remember that I told you about them; I did not tell you these things from the beginning because I was with you.

⁵ “Now then, I am going away to Him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’

⁶ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

⁷ Nevertheless I am telling you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, because if I do not go away the Enabler will not come to you, but if I do go I will send Him to you.

⁸ “Now when He comes he will convict the world about sin and about righteousness and about judgment:

⁹ first about sin, because they do not believe into me;

¹⁰ then about righteousness, because I am going away to my Father and you will no longer see me;

¹¹ then about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

¹³ However, when He, the Spirit of the Truth, has come, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but He will speak whatever He hears. He will also communicate to you the things that are coming.

¹⁵ All that the Father has is mine; that is why I said that He takes from what is mine and will communicate it to you.

¹⁶ “In just a little you will not see me, and in another little you will see me, because I am going to the Father.”

¹⁷ Then some of His disciples said among themselves: “What is this that He is telling us, ‘In just a little you will not see me, and in another little you will see me,’ and because ‘I am going to the Father’?”

¹⁸ So they said: “What is this ‘little’ that He mentions? We do not know what He is talking about.”

¹⁹ Well Jesus knew that they were wanting to question Him and said to them: “Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, ‘In just a little you will not see me, and in another little you will see me’?

²⁰ Most assuredly I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will become grieved, but your grief will be turned into joy.

²¹ When a woman gives birth she has pain, because her time has come; but when the child is born she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.

²² So in your turn you are now experiencing grief, but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

²³ In that day you will not question me about anything. “Most assuredly I say to you that whatever you ask the Father in my name He will give you.

²⁴ Until now you have not asked anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full.

²⁵ “I have told you these things using figures of speech, but a time is coming when I will no longer talk to you with figures of speech; rather I will tell you plainly about the Father.

²⁶ In that day you will ask in my name; I do not say to you that I will request the Father on your behalf,

²⁷ because the Father Himself is fond of you, in that you have become fond of me and have believed that I came forth from God.

²⁸ I did come forth from the Father and have come into the world. I am leaving the world again and am going to the Father.”

²⁹ His disciples say to Him: “Hey, now you are speaking plainly and using no figure of speech!

¹ I've told you this so you won't give up your trust in me.

² They will expel you from the synagogues—in fact the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing God a service.

³ They'll do this because they have never known the Father or me. I've told you this so that when these things happen, you'll remember what I told you.

⁴ I didn't need to tell you this right at the beginning because I was going to be with you.

⁵ But now I'm going to the one who sent me, and yet not one of you is asking me, ‘Where are you going?’

⁶ Of course, now that I've told you, you're full of grief.

⁷ But I'm telling you the truth: it's better for you that I go away, for if I don't the Comforter won't come to you. If I go away, I will send him to you.

⁸ When he comes, he will convince those in the world that they have wrong ideas regarding sin, about what is right, and about judgment:

⁹ Sin, for they don't trust in me.

¹⁰ What is right, for I'm going to the Father and you won't see me any longer.

¹¹ Judgment, for the ruler of this world has been condemned.

¹² There's much more I want to explain to you, but you couldn't stand it now.

¹³ However, when the Spirit of truth comes, he will teach you the whole truth. He doesn't speak for himself, but he only says what he hears, and he will tell you what's going to happen.

¹⁴ He brings me glory for he teaches you whatever he receives from me.

¹⁵ All that belongs to the Father is mine. This is why I said that the Spirit teaches you whatever he receives from me.

¹⁶ In a little while you won't see me anymore, but then a little while after that you will see me.”

¹⁷ Some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean, ‘In a little while you won't see me, but a little while after that you will see me’? and ‘For I'm going to the Father’?”

¹⁸ They were asking, “What does he mean by ‘in a little while’? We don't know what he's talking about.”

¹⁹ Jesus realized that they wanted to ask him about this. So he asked them, “Are you wondering about my comment, ‘In a little while you won't see me, but a little while after that you will see me’?

²⁰ I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will turn into joy.

²¹ A woman in labor suffers pain because her time has come, but once the baby is born, she forgets the agony because of the joy that a child has been brought into the world.

²² Yes, you're grieving now, but I will see you again; and you will rejoice, and no one can take away your joy.

²³ When that time comes you won't need to ask me for anything. I tell you the truth, the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.

²⁴ Until now you haven't asked for anything in my name, so ask and you shall receive, and your happiness will be complete.

²⁵ I've been talking to you using picture language. But soon I won't use such picture language any more when I speak to you. Instead I'll explain the Father to you very plainly.

²⁶ At that time you will ask in my name. I'm not saying to you that I will plead with the Father on your behalf,

²⁷ for the Father himself loves you—because you love me and believe that I came from God.

²⁸ I left the Father and came into the world; now I leave the world and return to my Father.”

²⁹ Then the disciples said, “Now you're talking very plainly and not using picture language.

¹ These thinges haue I saide vnto you, that ye should not be offended.

⁹ Of sinne, because they beleeued not in me:

¹⁰ Of righteousnesse, because I goe to my Father, and ye shall see me no more:

¹¹ Of iudgement, because the prince of this world is iudged.

¹² I haue yet many things to say vnto you, but ye cannot beare them nowe.

¹³ Howbeit, when he is come which is the Spirit of trueth, he will leade you into all trueth: for he shall not speake of himselfe, but whatsoeuer he shall heare, shall he speake, and he will shew you the things to come.

⁷ But I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I depart. For if I do not depart, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

⁸ And when he is come, he will bring conviction to the world, of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.

⁹ Of sin, because they believe not in me;

¹⁰ of righteousness, because I go to the Father, and ye see me no more;

¹¹ of judgment, because the prince of this world hath been judged.

¹² I have yet many things to say to you, but ye cannot bear them now.

¹³ But when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all the truth. For he will not speak from himself, but whatever he shall hear, that he will speak; and he will tell you the things to come.

¹⁴ He will glorify me, for he will receive of what is mine, and will tell it to you.

¹⁵ Every thing that the Father hath is mine. For this cause I said, that he receiveth of what is mine, and will tell it to you.

¹⁶ A little while, and ye no longer behold me; and again a little while, and ye will see me.

¹⁷ Some of his disciples therefore said to one another, What is this that he saith to us, A little while, and ye behold me not, and again a little while, and ye will see me? and, Because I go to the Father?

¹⁸ They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? We do not know what he is speaking of.

¹⁹ Jesus knew that they were desirous of asking him, and said to them, Is it of this that ye are inquiring of one another, that I said, A little while, and ye behold me not, and again a little while, and ye will See me?

²⁰ Truly, truly do I say to you, that ye will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; ye will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.

²¹ A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come; but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, through joy that a man is born into the world.

²² So ye also now have sorrow; but I shall see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one taketh from you.

²³ And in that day ye will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly do I say to you, Whatever ye shall ask the Father, he will give it you in my name.

²⁴ Hitherto ye have asked nothing in my name; ask, and ye will receive, that your joy may be made full.

²⁵ These things I have spoken to you in parables. The time is coming, when I shall no more speak to you in parables, but shall tell you plainly of the Father.

²⁶ In that day ye will ask in my name; and I do not tell you that I will pray the Father for you;

²⁷ for the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came forth from God.

²⁸ I came forth from the Father, and have come into the world; again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.

²⁹ His disciples say, Lo! now thou speakest plainly, and speakest no parable.

³ They will do this, because they have not learnt to know the Father, or even me.

¹ These thinges have I sayde vnto you because ye shuld not be offended.

² They shall excommunicat you: ye the tyme shall come that whosoever killeth you will thinke that he doth God service.

³ And suche thinges will they do vnto you because they have not knowen the father nether yet me.

⁴ But these thinges have I tolde you that when that houre is come ye myght remember them that I tolde you so. These thinges sayde I not unto you at the begynninge because I was present with you.

⁵ But now I goo my waye to him that sent me and none of you axeth me: whither goest thou?

⁶ But because I have sayde suche thinges vnto you youre hertes are full of sorowe.

⁷ Neverthelesse I tell you the trueth it is expedient for you that I goo awaye. For yf I goo not awaye that comforter will not come vnto you. But yf I departe I will sende him vnto you.

⁸ And when he is come he will rebuke the worlde of synne and of rightwesnes and of iudgement.

⁹ Of synne because they beleve not on me:

¹⁰ Of rightwesnes because I go to my father and ye shall se me no moare:

¹¹ and of iudgement because the chefe ruler of this worlde is iudged all ready.

¹² I have yet many thinges to saye vnto you: but ye cannot beare them awaye now.

¹³ How be it when he is come (I meane the sprete of truthe) he will leade yon into all trueth. He shall not speake of him selfe: but whatsoever he shall heare that shall he speake and he will shewe you thinges to come.

¹⁴ He shall glorify me for he shall receave of myne and shall shewe vnto you.

¹⁵ All thinges that the father hath aremyne. Therfore sayd I vnto you that he shall take of myne and shewe vnto you.

¹⁹ Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him, and he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, 'A little while and you will no longer see me, and again a little while and you will see me'?

²¹ When a woman gives birth she has sadness because her hour has come, but when she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers her pain because of her joy that a man has been born into the world.

²² So you have sadness now, but I will see you again, and your heart will be glad, and no one will be able to take away your joy from you.

²³ On that day you will not ask me anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.

¹¹ Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

¹² I have yet many things to say to you, but ye cannot bear them now.

¹³ But, when he, the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all the truth: for he will not speak from himself; but whatever he shall hear, that will he speak: and he will show you things to come.

¹⁴ He will glorify me: for he will receive of mine, and will show it to you.

¹⁵ All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore I said, that he will take of mine, and show it to you.

¹⁶ A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.

¹⁷ Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith to us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?

¹⁸ They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.

¹⁹ Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said to them, Do ye inquire among yourselves of that which I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?

²⁰ Verily, verily, I say to you, that ye will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice: and ye will be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

²¹ A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.

²² And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

²³ And in that day ye will ask me nothing: Verily, verily, I say to you, Whatever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

²⁴ Hitherto ye have asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

²⁵ These things have I spoken to you in proverbs: but the time cometh when I shall no more speak to you in proverbs, but I shall show you plainly concerning the Father.

²⁶ At that day ye will ask in my name: and I say not to you, that I will pray the Father for you:

²⁷ For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came from God.

²⁸ I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.

²⁹ His disciples said to him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.

¹ “I have said these things to you so that you wouldn’t be caused to stumble.

² They will put you out of the synagogues. Yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers service to God.

³ They will do these things because they have not known the Father nor me.

⁴ But I have told you these things so that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you about them. I didn’t tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.

⁵ But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’

⁶ But because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart.

⁷ Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I don’t go away, the Counselor won’t come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

⁸ When he has come, he will convict the world about sin, about righteousness, and about judgment;

⁹ about sin, because they don’t believe in me;

¹⁰ about righteousness, because I am going to my Father, and you won’t see me any more;

¹¹ about judgment, because the prince of this world has been judged.

¹² “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now.

¹⁹ Therefore Yeshua perceived that they wanted to ask him, and he said to them, “Do you inquire among yourselves concerning this, that I said, ‘A little while, and you won’t see me, and again a little while, and you will see me?’

⁵ And now I go to him that sent me, and no man of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?

⁶ but for I have spoken to you these things, heaviness or sorrow hath full-filled your heart.

⁷ But I say to you truth, it speedeth to you, that I go; for if I go not forth or go away, the Comforter shall not come to you; but if I go forth or go away, I shall send him to you.

⁸ And when he cometh, he shall reprove the world of sin, and of rightwiseness, and of doom,

⁹ Of sin, for they have not believed in me;

¹⁰ and of rightwiseness, for I go to the Father, and now ye shall not see me;

¹¹ but of doom, for the prince of this world is now deemed.

¹³ But when the Spirit of truth cometh, he shall teach you all truth; for he shall not speak of himself, but whatever things he shall hear, he shall speak; and he shall tell to you those things that be to come.

¹⁴ He shall clarify me, for of mine he shall take, and shall tell to you.

¹⁵ All things, whatever things the Father hath, be mine; therefore I said to you, that of mine he shall take, and shall tell to you.

¹⁷ Therefore some of his disciples said together, What is this thing that he saith to us, A little, and ye shall not see me; and again a little, and ye shall see me, for I go to the Father?

¹⁸ Therefore they said, What is this that he saith to us, A little? we know not what he speaketh.

¹⁹ And Jesus knew, that they would ask him, and he said to them, Of this thing ye seek among you, for I said, A little, and ye shall not see me; and again a little, and ye shall see me.

²⁰ Truly, truly, I say to you, that ye shall mourn and weep, but the world shall have joy; and ye shall be sorrow-ful, but your sorrow shall turn into joy.

²¹ A woman when she beareth child, hath heaviness or sorrow, for her time is come; but when she hath born a son, now she thinketh not on the pain, for joy, for a man is born into the world.

²² And therefore ye have now sorrow, but again I shall see you, and your heart shall have joy, and no man shall take from you your joy.

²³ And in that day ye shall not ask me anything; truly, truly, I say to you, if ye ask the Father anything in my name, he shall give it to you.

²⁴ Till now ye asked nothing in my name; ask ye, and ye shall take, that your joy be full.

²⁵ I have spoken to you these things in proverbs; the hour cometh, when now I shall not speak to you in proverbs, but openly of my Father I shall tell to you.

²⁶ In that day ye shall ask in my name; and I say not to you, that I shall pray the Father for you;

²⁷ for the Father himself loveth you, for ye have loved me, and have believed, that I went out from God.

²⁸ I went out from the Father, and I came into the world; again I leave the world, and go to the Father.

²⁹ His disciples said to him, Lo! now thou speakest openly, and thou sayest no proverb.

¹ These things I have spoken to you, (so) that ye be not caused to stumble.

² They shall make you without the synagogues, but the hour cometh, that each man that slayeth you, deem that he doeth service to God. (They shall put you out of the synagogues, and the time cometh, when each man who killeth you, shall think that he doeth a service to God.)

³ And they shall do to you these things, for they have not known the Father, neither me.

⁴ But these things I spake to you, that when the hour of them shall come, ye have mind, (or so that when their time shall come, ye shall remember), that I said (this) to you. I said not to you these things from the beginning, for I was with you.

⁵ And now I go to him that sent me, and no man of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? (And now I go to him who sent me, and none of you asketh me, Where goest thou?)

⁶ but for I have spoken to you these things, heaviness or sorrow hath full-filled your heart(s). (but because I have spoken these things to you, now sorrow hath filled your hearts full.)

⁷ But I say to you (the) truth, it speedeth to you, that I go, (or But I tell you the truth, it is more expedient for you, that I go away); for if I go not forth, the Comforter shall not come to you; but if I go forth, I shall send him to you. But I say to you truth, it speedeth to you, that I go; soothly if I shall not go away, the comforter shall not come to you; forsooth if I shall go away, I shall send him to you.

⁸ And when he cometh, he shall reprove the world of sin, and of rightwiseness, and of doom, (And when he cometh, he shall prove the world wrong about sin, and about righteousness, and about judgement.)

⁹ Of sin (or About sin), for they have not believed in me;

¹⁰ and of rightwiseness (or and about righteousness), for I go to the Father, and now ye shall not see me;

¹¹ but of doom, for the prince of this world is now deemed. (and about judgement, for the Prince of this world is now judged.)

¹² Yet I have many things to say to you, but ye may not bear them now (or but ye cannot bear them now).

¹³ But when the Spirit of truth cometh, he shall teach you all truth; for he shall not speak of himself, but whatever things he shall hear, he shall speak; and he shall tell to you those things that be to come.

² Thei schulen make you with outen the synagogis, but the our cometh, that ech man that sleeth you, deme that he doith seruyce to God.

³ And thei schulen do to you these thingis, for thei han not knowun the fadir, nether me.

⁴ But these thingis Y spak to you, that whanne the our `of hem schal come, ye haue mynde, that Y seide to you.

⁵ Y seide not to you these thingis fro the bigynnyng, for Y was with you. And now Y go to hym that sente me, and no man of you axith me, Whidur `thou goist?

⁶ but for Y haue spokun to you these thingis, heuynesse hath fulfillid youre herte.

⁷ But Y seie to you treuthe, it spedith to you, that Y go; for if Y go not forth, the coumfortour schal not come to you; but if Y go forth, Y schal sende hym to you.

⁸ And whanne he cometh, he schal repreue the world of synne, and of riytwisnesse, and of doom.

⁹ Of synne, for thei han not bileued in me;

¹⁰ and of riytwisnesse, for Y go to the fadir, and now ye schulen not se me;

¹¹ but of doom, for the prince of this world is now demed.

¹² Yit Y haue many thingis for to seie to you, but ye moun not bere hem now.

¹³ But whanne thilke spirit of treuthe cometh, he schal teche you al trewthe; for he schal not speke of hym silf, but what euer thinges he schal here, he schal speke; and he schal telle to you tho thingis that ben to come.

¹⁴ He schal clarifie me, for of myne he schal take, and schal telle to you.

¹⁵ Alle thingis `whiche euer the fadir hath, ben myne; therfor Y seide to you, for of myne he schal take, and schal telle to you.

¹⁶ A litil, and thanne ye schulen not se me; and eftsoone a litil, and ye schulen se me, for Y go to the fadir.

¹⁷ Therfor summe of hise disciplis seiden togidere, What is this thing that he seith to vs, A litil, and ye schulen not se me; and eftsoone a litil, and ye schulen se me, for Y go to the fadir?

¹⁸ Therfor thei seiden, What is this that he seith to vs, A litil? we witen not what he spekith.

¹⁹ And Jhesus knew, that thei wolden axe hym, and he seide to hem, Of this thing ye seken among you, for Y seide, A litil, and ye schulen not se me; and eftsoone a litil, and ye schulen se me.

²⁰ Treuli, treuli, Y seie to you, that ye schulen mourne and wepe, but the world schal haue ioye; and ye schulen be soreuful, but youre sorewe schal turne in to ioye.

²¹ A womman whanne sche berith child, hath heuynesse, for hir tyme is comun; but whanne sche hath borun a sone, now sche thenkith not on the peyne, for ioye, for a man is borun in to the world.

²² And therfor ye han now sorew, but eftsoone Y schal se you, and youre herte schal haue ioie, and no man schal take fro you youre ioie.

²³ And in that day ye schulen not axe me ony thing; treuli, treuli, `Y seie to you, if ye axen the fadir ony thing in my name, he schal yyue to you.

²⁴ `Til now ye axiden no thing in my name; `axe ye, `and ye schulen take, that youre ioie be ful.

²⁵ Y haue spokun to you these thingis in prouerbis; the our cometh, whanne now Y schal not speke to you in prouerbis, but opynli of my fadir Y schal telle to you.

²⁶ In that dai ye schulen axe in my name; and Y seie not to you, that Y schal preye the fadir of you;

²⁷ for the fadir hym silf loueth you, for ye han loued me, and han bileued, that Y wente out fro God.

²⁸ Y wente out fro the fadir, and Y cam in to the world; eftsoone Y leeue the world, and Y go to the fadir.

²⁹ Hise disciplis seiden to hym, Lo! now thou spekist opynli, and thou seist no prouerbe.

¹ 'These things I have spoken to you, that ye may not be stumbled,

² out of the synagogues they will put you; but an hour doth come, that every one who hath killed you, may think to offer service unto God;

³ and these things they will do to you, because they did not know the Father, nor me.

⁴ 'But these things I have spoken to you, that when the hour may come, ye may remember them, that I said them to you, and these things to you from the beginning I did not say, because I was with you;

⁵ and now I go away to Him who sent me, and none of you doth ask me, Whither dost thou go?

⁶ but because these things I have said to you, the sorrow hath filled your heart.

⁷ 'But I tell you the truth; it is better for you that I go away, for if I may not go away, the Comforter will not come unto you, and if I go on, I will send Him unto you;

⁸ and having come, He will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment;

⁹ concerning sin indeed, because they do not believe in me;

¹⁰ and concerning righteousness, because unto my Father I go away, and no more do ye behold me;

¹¹ and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world hath been judged.

¹² 'I have yet many things to say to you, but ye are not able to bear them now;

¹³ and when He may come — the Spirit of truth — He will guide you to all the truth, for He will not speak from Himself, but as many things as He will hear He will speak, and the coming things He will tell you;

¹⁴ He will glorify me, because of mine He will take, and will tell to you.

¹⁵ 'All things, as many as the Father hath, are mine; because of this I said, That of mine He will take, and will tell to you;

¹⁶ a little while, and ye do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go away unto the Father.'

¹⁷ Therefore said some of his disciples one to another, 'What is this that he saith to us, A little while, and ye do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me, and, Because I go away unto the Father?'

¹⁸ they said then, 'What is this he saith — the little while? we have not known what he saith.'

¹⁹ Jesus, therefore, knew that they were wishing to ask him, and he said to them, 'Concerning this do ye seek one with another, because I said, A little while, and you do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me?

²⁰ verily, verily, I say to you, that ye shall weep and lament, and the world will rejoice; and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow joy will become.

²¹ 'The woman, when she may bear, hath sorrow, because her hour did come, and when she may bear the child, no more doth she remember the anguish, because of the joy that a man was born to the world.

²⁵ 'These things in similitudes I have spoken to you, but there cometh an hour when no more in similitudes will I speak to you, but freely of the Father, will tell you.

²⁶ 'In that day, in my name ye will make request, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father for you,

²⁷ for the Father himself doth love you, because me ye have loved, and ye have believed that I from God came forth;

²⁸ I came forth from the Father, and have come to the world; again I leave the world, and go on unto the Father.'

²⁹ His disciples say to him, 'Lo, now freely thou dost speak, and no similitude speakest thou;
