John 14:5-21 in English

⁵ Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; how know we the way?

⁶ Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no one cometh unto the Father, but by me.

⁷ If ye had known me, ye would have known my Father also: from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

⁸ Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

⁹ Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and dost thou not know me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; how sayest thou, Show us the Father?

¹⁰ Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I say unto you I speak not from myself: but the Father abiding in me doeth his works.

¹¹ Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.

¹² Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto the Father.

¹³ And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

¹⁴ If ye shall ask anything in my name, that will I do.

¹⁵ If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments.

¹⁶ And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may be with you for ever,

¹⁷ even the Spirit of truth: whom the world cannot receive; for it beholdeth him not, neither knoweth him: ye know him; for he abideth with you, and shall be in you.

¹⁸ I will not leave you desolate: I come unto you.

¹⁹ Yet a little while, and the world beholdeth me no more; but ye behold me: because I live, ye shall live also.

²⁰ In that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

²¹ He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself unto him.

⁵ Thomas asked Him, “Lord, we don’t know where You are going, so how can we know the way?”

⁶ Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

⁷ If you had known me, you would have known my Father too. From now on you know Him and have seen Him.”

⁸ Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that would be enough for us.”

⁹ Jesus answered, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you haven’t known me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father, so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

¹⁰ Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I speak to you aren’t my own, but from the Father who lives in me. He does the works.

¹¹ Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father in me, or else believe me for the sake of the works themselves.

¹² “Most assuredly, I tell you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do, and even greater works than these, because I am going to my Father.

¹³ I will do whatever you ask in my name, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

¹⁴ If you ask anything in my name, I will do it.

¹⁵ If you sincerely love me, you will keep my commandments.

¹⁶ I will then ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor, that He may be with you forever —

¹⁷ the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You know Him, though, because He lives with you and will be in you.

¹⁸ I won’t leave you orphans. I will come to you.

¹⁹ After a little while the world won’t see me, but you will see me. Because I live, you will also live.

²⁰ In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.

²¹ Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, sincerely loves me. Whoever sincerely loves me will be sincerely loved by my Father, and I’ll sincerely love them and reveal myself to them.”

⁵ Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. So how can we know the road?”

⁶ Jesus said to him, “I am the road MET to where my Father is. I am the one who reveals MET the truth about God and the one who gives eternal life to people. I am the only one who can enable people to come to my Father. There is no other way.

⁷ If you really knew who I was, you would have known my Father also. From now on, you know him, and it is as though you have seen him.”

⁸ Philip said to him, “Lord, show us your Father and that will be enough for us!”

⁹ Jesus said to him, “Philip, I have been with you for a long time. So ◄surely you should know who I really am!/why have you not come to know who I really am?► RHQ Those who have seen me, it is as though they have seen my Father. So ◄why do you say ‘Show us your Father’?/you should not say ‘Show us your Father’!► RHQ

¹⁰ Do you not RHQ believe that I have a close relationship with my Father, and that my Father has a close relationship with me? The messages that I tell you do not come from me. They come from my Father, who has a close relationship with me. He is enabling me to teach these things, and to perform the miracles that he wants me to perform.

¹¹ Believe that I have a close relationship with my Father and that my Father has a close relationship with me. If you do not believe that just because of what I say, believe it because of the miracles themselves that I have done.

¹² Listen to this carefully: You who trust in me will do the kinds of miracles that I have done. Because of what I will do for you (OR, Because I will send God's Spirit to you) after I go to my Father, you will be able to do miracles that will be greater than the ones I have done.

¹³ And whatever you, using my authority, ask me to do, I will do it, in order that I can show you how great my Father is.

¹⁴ Anything that you ask my Father to do, anything that you ask with my authority MTY, I will do.”

¹⁵ “If you love me, you will do what I have commanded you.

¹⁶ Then I myself will request my Father, and he will send you someone else who will ◄encourage/be like a legal counsel for► you.

¹⁷ I am talking about the Spirit, who will teach you God's truth. He will be with you forever. Those who are opposed to God MTY cannot receive him, because they cannot understand what he does, and they cannot know who he is. But you know who he is, because he is with you and he will be inside you.

¹⁸ When I leave you, I will not let you be alone/helpless MET. When I send the Spirit, it will be like I am coming back to you (OR, When I rise from the dead, I will come back to you.)

¹⁹ Soon those who do not belong to God MTY will not see me anymore. But when the Spirit comes to you, it will be as though you will be seeing me again (OR, But after I become alive again, you will see me again.) Because I will be alive again, you also will have eternal life.

²⁰ At that time you will know that I have a close relationship with my Father, and you will have a close relationship with me, and I will have a close relationship with you.

²¹ Those who have accepted my commands and obey them are the people who love me. My Father will love those who love me. I also will love them, and I will fully reveal to them what I am like.”

⁵ Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going. How can we know the way?”

⁵ Thomas said, Lord, we have no knowledge of where you are going; how may we have knowledge of the way?

⁶ Jesus said to him, I am the true and living way: no one comes to the Father but by me.

⁷ If you had knowledge of me, you would have knowledge of my Father: you have knowledge of him now and have seen him.

⁸ Philip said to him, Lord, let us see the Father, and we have need of nothing more.

⁹ Jesus said to him, Philip, have I been with you all this time, and still you have no knowledge of me? He who has seen me has seen the Father. Why do you say, Let us see the Father?

¹⁰ Have you not faith that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words which I say to you, I say not from myself: but the Father who is in me all the time does his works.

¹¹ Have faith that I am in the Father and that the Father is in me: at least, have faith in me because of what I do.

¹² Truly I say to you, He who puts his faith in me will do the very works which I do, and he will do greater things than these, because I am going to my Father.

¹³ And whatever request you make in my name, that I will do, so that the Father may have glory in the Son.

¹⁴ If you make any request to me in my name, I will do it.

¹⁵ If you have love for me, you will keep my laws.

¹⁶ And I will make prayer to the Father and he will give you another Helper to be with you for ever,

¹⁷ Even the Spirit of true knowledge. That Spirit the world is not able to take to its heart because it sees him not and has no knowledge of him: but you have knowledge of him, because he is ever with you and will be in you.

¹⁸ I will not let you be without a friend: I am coming to you.

¹⁹ A little time longer, and the world will see me no more; but you will see me; and you will be living because I am living.

²⁰ At that time it will be clear to you that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I in you.

²¹ He who has my laws and keeps them, he it is who has love for me: and he who has love for me will be loved by my Father, and I will have love for him and will let myself be seen clearly by him.

¹⁰ Don't you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own; rather it is the Father who dwells in me who does the works.

¹¹ Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or else, believe me because of the works themselves.

¹² “Most assuredly I say to you, the one believing into me, he too will do the works that I do; in fact he will do greater works than these, because I am going to my Father.

¹³ Further, whatever you (pl) may ask in my name, that I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

¹⁴ If you ask anything in my name, I will do it!

¹⁵ If you love me, keep my commandments.

¹⁶ Also, I will ask the Father and He will give you another Enabler, so that He may stay with you throughout the age

¹⁷ —the Spirit of the Truth, whom the world is unable to receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you do know Him, because He is staying with you and will be in you.

¹⁸ “I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you shortly.

¹⁹ In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Because I live you also will live.

²⁰ In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.

²¹ The one who has my commandments and keeps them, he is the one who loves me. Now the one who loves me will be loved by my Father; and I will love him, and reveal myself to him.”

⁵ Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don't know where you're going. How can we know the way?”

⁶ Jesus replied, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

⁷ If you had known me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and you have seen him.”

⁸ Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we'll be convinced.”

⁹ Jesus replied, “Have I been with you such a long time, Philip, and yet you still don't know me? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

¹⁰ Don't you believe that I live in the Father and the Father lives in me? The words I speak are not mine; it's the Father living in me who is doing his work.

¹¹ Believe me when I tell you that I live in the Father, and the Father lives in me, or at least believe because of the evidence provided by all that I've done.

¹² I tell you the truth, anyone who trusts in me will do the same things I am doing. In fact they will do even greater things because I am going to the Father.

¹³ I'll do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified through the Son.

¹⁴ Whatever you ask for in my name, I will do it.

¹⁵ If you love me, you will keep my commands.

¹⁶ I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Comforter,

¹⁷ the Spirit of truth, who will always be with you. The world cannot accept him because it isn't looking for him and does not know him. But you know him because he lives with you and will be in you.

¹⁸ I will not abandon you like orphans: I will come back to you.

¹⁹ Soon the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you will live too.

²⁰ On that day you will know that I live in the Father, you live in me, and I live in you.

²¹ Those who keep my commands are the ones who love me, those who love me will be loved by my Father. I will love them too, and will reveal myself to them.”

⁵ Thomas sayd vnto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest: how can we then know ye way?

⁶ Iesus sayd vnto him, I am that Way, and that Trueth, and that Life. No man commeth vnto the Father, but by me.

⁷ If ye had knowen mee, ye should haue knowen my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and haue seene him.

⁸ Philippe sayd vnto him, Lord, shewe vs thy Father, and it sufficeth vs.

⁹ Iesus sayd vnto him, I haue bene so long time with you, and hast thou not knowen mee, Philippe? he that hath seene me, hath seene my Father: how then sayest thou, Shewe vs thy Father?

¹⁰ Beleeuest thou not, that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? The wordes that I speake vnto you, I speake not of my selfe: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the workes.

¹¹ Beleeue me, that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me: at the least, beleeue me for the very workes sake.

¹² Verely, verely I say vnto you, he that beleeueth in me, the workes that I doe, hee shall doe also, and greater then these shall he doe: for I goe vnto my Father.

¹³ And whatsoeuer ye aske in my Name, that will I doe, that the Father may be glorified in the Sonne.

¹⁴ If ye shall aske any thing in my Name, I will doe it.

¹⁵ If ye loue me, keepe my comandements,

¹⁶ And I wil pray the Father, and he shall giue you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for euer,

¹⁷ Euen the Spirit of trueth, whome the world can not receiue, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye knowe him: for he dwelleth with you, and shalbe in you.

¹⁸ I will not leaue you fatherles: but I will come to you.

¹⁹ Yet a litle while, and the world shall see me no more, but ye shall see me: because I liue, ye shall liue also.

²⁰ At that day shall ye knowe that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.

⁵ One of them was what's-his-name, Thomas, and he didn't know what Jesus was talking about. He said to Jesus, “Hey boss, where are you going? We don't know about that place, and we don't know the road to that place. How can we follow you to that place?”

⁶ Jesus said to them, “I myself will take people one by one by the hand to the Father. I myself will teach them the true word about the Father. I myself will make them really alive forever. My words are true: no person will go to the Father without me. We two will go to the Father together.”

⁵ “We do not know where you are going, Master,” said Thomas; “so how can we know the way?”

⁹ “Have I been all this time amongst you,” said Jesus, “and yet you, Philip, have not recognised me? The person who has seen me has seen the Father, how can you say, then, ‘Show us the Father’?

¹⁰ Don't you believe that I am in union with the Father, and the Father with me? In giving you my teaching I am not speaking on my own authority; but the Father himself, always in union with me, does his own work.

¹¹ Believe me,” he said to them all, “when I say that I am in union with the Father and the Father with me, or else believe me because of the work itself.

¹² In truth I tell you, the person who believes in me will themselves do the work that I am doing; and they will do greater work still, because I am going to the Father.

¹³ Whatever you ask, in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be honoured in the Son.

¹⁴ If you ask anything, in my name, I will do it.

¹⁵ If you love me, you will lay my commands to heart,

¹⁶ and I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper, to be with you always — the Spirit of truth.

¹⁷ The world cannot receive this Spirit, because it does not see him or recognise him, but you recognise him, because he is always with you, and is within you.

¹⁸ I will not leave you bereaved; I will come to you.

¹⁹ In a little while the world will see me no more, but you will still see me; because I am living, you will be living also.

²⁰ At that time you will recognise that I am in union with the Father, and you with me, and I with you.

One who has agapao ·total devotion love· for me will receive agapao ·total devotion love· from 'Avi ·my Father·, and I will have agapao ·totally devoted love· for him, and will reveal myself to him.”

¹⁶ And I shall pray the Father, and he shall give to you another Comforter, the Spirit of truth, to dwell with you without end;

¹⁷ which Spirit the world may not take, for it seeth him not, neither knoweth him. But ye shall know him, for he shall dwell with you, and he shall be in you.

¹⁸ I shall not leave you fatherless, I shall come to you.

¹⁹ Yet a little, and the world seeth not now me or the world seeth not me now; but ye shall see me, for I live, and ye shall live.

²⁰ In that day ye shall know, that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

²¹ He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me, shall be loved of my Father, and I shall love him, and I shall show to him myself.

⁵ Thomas saith to him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest, and how may we know the way? (Thomas said to him, Lord, we do not know where thou goest, so how can we know the way?)

⁶ Jesus saith to him, I am (the) way, (the) truth, and (the) life; no man cometh to the Father, but by me.

⁷ If ye had known me, soothly ye had known also my Father; and afterward ye shall know him, and ye have seen him.

⁸ Philip saith to him, Lord, show to us the Father, and it sufficeth to us.

⁹ Jesus saith to him, So long (a) time I am with you, and have ye not known me? Philip, he that seeth me, seeth also the Father. How sayest thou, show to us the Father?

¹⁰ Believest thou not, that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you, I speak not of myself; but the Father himself that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

¹¹ Believe ye not, that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? Else believe ye for those works.

¹² Truly, truly, I say to you, (or Truly, I tell you the truth), if a man believeth in me, also he shall do the works that I do; and he shall do greater works than these, for I go to the Father. Truly, truly, I say to you, he that believeth in me, and he shall do the works that I do; and he shall do more works than these, for I go to the father.

¹³ And whatever thing ye ask the Father in my name, I shall do this thing, (so) that the Father be glorified in the Son.

¹⁴ If ye ask anything in my name, I shall do it.

¹⁵ If ye love me, keep ye my commandments (or obey my commandments).

⁵ Thomas seith to hym, Lord, we witen not whidur thou goist, and hou moun we wite the weie?

⁶ Jhesus seith to hym, Y am weie, treuthe, and lijf; no man cometh to the fadir, but bi me.

⁷ If ye hadden knowe me, sotheli ye hadden knowe also my fadir; and aftirward ye schulen knowe hym, and ye han seyn hym.

⁸ Filip seith to hym, Lord, schewe to vs the fadir, and it suffisith to vs.

⁹ Jhesus seith to hym, So long tyme Y am with you, and `han ye not knowun me? Filip, he that seeth me, seeth also the fadir. Hou seist thou, schewe to vs the fadir?

¹⁰ Bileuest thou not, that Y am in the fadir, and the fadir is in me? The wordis that Y speke to you, Y speke not of my silf; but the fadir hym silf dwellynge in me, doith the werkis.

¹¹ Bileue ye not, that Y am in the fadir, and the fadir is in me?

¹² Ellis bileue ye for thilke werkis. Treuli, treuli, Y seie to you, if a man bileueth in me, also he schal do the werkis that Y do; and he schal do grettere werkis than these, for Y go to the fadir.

¹³ And what euere thing ye axen the fadir in my name, Y schal do this thing, that the fadir be glorified in the sone.

¹⁴ If ye axen ony thing in my name, Y schal do it.

¹⁵ If ye louen me, kepe ye my comaundementis.

¹⁶ And Y schal preye the fadir, and he schal yyue to you another coumfortour,

¹⁷ the spirit of treuthe, to dwelle with you with outen ende; which spirit the world may not take, for it seeth hym not, nether knowith hym. But ye schulen knowe hym, for he schal dwelle with you, and he schal be in you.

¹⁸ Y schal not leeue you fadirles, Y schal come to you.

¹⁹ Yit a litil, and the world seeth not now me; but ye schulen se me, for Y lyue, and ye schulen lyue.

²⁰ In that dai ye schulen knowe, that Y am in my fadir, and ye in me, and Y in you.

²¹ He that hath my comaundementis, and kepith hem, he it is that loueth me; and he that loueth me, schal be loued of my fadir, and Y schal loue hym, and Y schal schewe to hym my silf.

⁵ Thomas saith to him, 'Sir, we have not known whither thou goest away, and how are we able to know the way?'

⁶ Jesus saith to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life, no one doth come unto the Father, if not through me;

⁷ if ye had known me, my Father also ye would have known, and from this time ye have known Him, and have seen Him.'

⁸ Philip saith to him, 'Sir, shew to us the Father, and it is enough for us;'

⁹ Jesus saith to him, 'So long time am I with you, and thou hast not known me, Philip? he who hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how dost thou say, Shew to us the Father?

¹⁰ Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? the sayings that I speak to you, from myself I speak not, and the Father who is abiding in me, Himself doth the works;

¹¹ believe me, that I am in the Father, and the Father in me; and if not, because of the works themselves, believe me.

¹² 'Verily, verily, I say to you, he who is believing in me, the works that I do — that one also shall do, and greater than these he shall do, because I go on to my Father;

¹³ and whatever ye may ask in my name, I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son;

¹⁴ if ye ask anything in my name I will do it.

¹⁵ 'If ye love me, my commands keep,

¹⁶ and I will ask the Father, and another Comforter He will give to you, that he may remain with you — to the age;

¹⁷ the Spirit of truth, whom the world is not able to receive, because it doth not behold him, nor know him, and ye know him, because he doth remain with you, and shall be in you.

¹⁸ 'I will not leave you bereaved, I come unto you;

¹⁹ yet a little, and the world doth no more behold me, and ye behold me, because I live, and ye shall live;

²⁰ in that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you;

²¹ he who is having my commands, and is keeping them, that one it is who is loving me, and he who is loving me shall be loved by my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.'
