John 12:16-33 in English

¹⁶ These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.

¹⁷ The multitude therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb, and raised him from the dead, bare witness.

¹⁸ For this cause also the multitude went and met him, for that they heard that he had done this sign.

¹⁹ The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Behold how ye prevail nothing; lo, the world is gone after him.

²⁰ Now there were certain Greeks among those that went up to worship at the feast:

²¹ these therefore came to Philip, who was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.

²² Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: Andrew cometh, and Philip, and they tell Jesus.

²³ And Jesus answereth them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.

²⁴ Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a grain of wheat fall into the earth and die, it abideth by itself alone; but if it die, it beareth much fruit.

²⁵ He that loveth his life loseth it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

²⁶ If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will the Father honor.

²⁷ Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour. But for this cause came I unto this hour.

²⁸ Father, glorify thy name. There came therefore a voice out of heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.

²⁹ The multitude therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it had thundered: others said, An angel hath spoken to him.

³⁰ Jesus answered and said, This voice hath not come for my sake, but for your sakes.

³¹ Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

³² And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto myself.

³³ But this he said, signifying by what manner of death he should die.

¹⁶ His disciples didn’t understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him.

¹⁷ So the crowd that had been with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to testify.

¹⁸ The crowd also met Him because they heard that He had done this sign.

¹⁹ Then the Pharisees said among themselves, “You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the whole world has gone after Him!”

²⁰ Now there were certain Greeks among those who came up to worship at the feast.

²¹ Then they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and told him, “Sir, we would like to see Jesus.”

²² Philip came and told Andrew, then Andrew and Philip came and told Jesus.

²³ Jesus answered them, saying, “The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

²⁴ Most assuredly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone, but if it dies, it produces many grains.

²⁵ Anyone who loves their life will lose it, and anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

²⁶ If anyone serves me, let them follow me; and where I am, there my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, my Father will honor them.

²⁷ “Now my soul has become troubled; and what will I say? ‘Father, save me from this time’? No, for this purpose I came to this time.

²⁸ Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from Heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”

²⁹ Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.”

³⁰ Jesus answered, “This voice hasn’t come for my sake, but for your sakes.

³¹ Now judgment is upon this world. Now the ruler of this world will be cast out.

³² And I, if I am lifted up from the Earth, will draw everyone to myself.”

³³ He was saying this to indicate the kind of death He was about to die.

²¹ The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.

²² Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.

²³ And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.

²⁴ Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

¹⁶ At first we disciples did not understand those things. But after Jesus had returned to heaven, we realized that those things had been written {that a prophet had written those things} about him, and that by doing those things for him the people had fulfilled what the prophet prophesied.

¹⁷ The crowd that was with him continued to tell other people that he called Lazarus to come out of the tomb, and that Lazarus had then become alive again.

¹⁸ Because of that, many people, because they heard others say that he had performed this miracle, went to meet him.

¹⁹ So the Pharisees said to each other, “It is obvious that we are making no progress in trying to stop him! It looks like HYP everyone MTY is becoming his disciple!”

²⁰ Among those who went up to Jerusalem to worship God during the Passover celebration were some Greeks.

²¹ They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida town in Galilee province. They wanted him to do something for them. They said, “Sir, we would like to talk with Jesus.”

²² So after Philip went and told that to Andrew, they both went and told Jesus.

²³ Then, to show them that he must die in order to give eternal life to non-Jews like those Greeks, Jesus replied to them, “It is time for God to honor me, the one who came from heaven. That will happen when I die.

²⁴ Listen to this carefully: My life is like a seed MET. If someone does not plant a kernel of grain in the ground, it does not change. It remains only one seed. But if it changes after it is planted in the ground, it will grow and produce many seeds.

²⁵ Anyone who strongly wants to keep on living here on earth will surely lose his life forever. But anyone who is willing to die HYP for my sake will surely gain eternal life.

²⁶ If any of these Greeks or anyone else wants to serve me, they must become my disciples. Then, after they die, they will be where I am, in heaven. My Father will honor all those who serve me.

²⁷ Now I am deeply disturbed. ◄I do not know what to say./What shall I say?► RHQ Should I say, ‘ My Father, save me from this time when I will suffer and die!’? No, I should not say that, because the reason I came ◄ into this world/from heaven► was that I would suffer MTY now.

²⁸ My Father, show how great you are!” John 12:28b-36a Then God spoke EUP from heaven, saying, “I have already shown how great I am, and I will do it again!”

²⁹ The crowd that was there heard it but they did not understand the words. Some said it was thunder. Others said an angel had spoken to him.

³⁰ Jesus replied to them, “The voice that you heard speaking was God's voice, but it was not for my benefit. It was for your benefit!

³¹ Now is the time for God to judge the people in MTY the world. Now is the time when I will destroy the power of Satan, the one who rules this world.

³² But as for me, when I am lifted {when men lift me} up from the ground on a cross, I will make a way for gathering everyone to myself.”

³³ He said this to show us the way in which he was going to die.

¹⁶ (These things were not clear to his disciples at first: but when Jesus had been lifted up into his glory, then it came to their minds that these things in the Writings were about him and that they had been done to him.)

¹⁷ Now the people who were with him when his voice came to Lazarus in the place of the dead, and gave him life again, had been talking about it.

¹⁸ And that was the reason the people went out to him, because it had come to their ears that he had done this sign.

¹⁹ Then the Pharisees said one to another, You see, you are unable to do anything: the world has gone after him.

²⁰ Now there were some Greeks among the people who had come up to give worship at the feast:

²¹ They came to Philip, who was of Beth-saida in Galilee, and made a request, saying, Sir, we have a desire to see Jesus.

²² Philip went and gave word of it to Andrew; and Andrew went with Philip to Jesus.

²³ And Jesus said to them in answer, The hour of the glory of the Son of man has come.

²⁴ Truly I say to you, If a seed of grain does not go into the earth and come to an end, it is still a seed and no more; but through its death it gives much fruit.

²⁵ He who is in love with life will have it taken from him; and he who has no care for his life in this world will keep it for ever and ever.

²⁶ If any man is my servant, let him come after me; and where I am, there will my servant be. If any man becomes my servant, my Father will give him honour.

²⁷ Now is my soul troubled; and what am I to say? Father, keep me from this hour. No: for this purpose have I come to this hour.

²⁸ Father, give glory to your name. Then there came a voice out of heaven, saying, I have given it glory, and I will give it glory again.

²⁹ Hearing the sound, a number of people who were there said that it was thunder: others said, An angel was talking to him.

³⁰ Jesus said in answer, This voice came not for me but for you.

³¹ Now is this world to be judged: now will the ruler of this world be sent out.

³² And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will make all men come to me.

³³ (This he said, pointing to the sort of death he would have.)

¹⁶ Now his disciples knew not these things at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things to him.

¹⁷ The crowd therefore that was with him bore witness because he had called Lazarus out of the tomb, and raised him from among the dead.

¹⁸ Therefore also the crowd met him because they had heard that he had done this sign.

²⁰ And there were certain Greeks among those who came up that they might worship in the feast;

²¹ these therefore came to Philip, who was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and they asked him saying, Sir, we desire to see Jesus.

²² Philip comes and tells Andrew, and again Andrew comes and Philip, and they tell Jesus.

²³ But Jesus answered them saying, The hour is come that the Son of man should be glorified.

²⁴ Amen, amen I say to you, unless the grain of wheat falling into the ground die,

²⁵ Itself remaineth alone. But if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world, keepeth it unto life eternal.

²⁶ If any man minister to me, let him follow me; and where I am, there also shall my minister be. If any man minister to me, him will my Father honour.

²³ But Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified.

³³ This He said, signifying by what kind of death He was about to die.

¹⁷ So the crowd that had been with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to testify.

¹⁸ That is also why the crowd met Him, because they heard that He had performed this sign.

¹⁹ So the Pharisees said among themselves: “You can see that you are not making any difference! Just look, the world has gone off after Him!”

²⁰ Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast.

²¹ So these men approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested of him saying, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.”

²² Philip goes and tells Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.

²³ But Jesus answered them saying: “The hour has come for the Son of the Man to be glorified.

²⁴ Most assuredly I say to you, if a grain of wheat, having fallen into the ground, does not die, it remains alone; but if it dies it bears a lot of fruit.

²⁵ The one ‘loving’ his life will waste it, and the one ‘hating’ his life, in this world, will preserve it into eternal life.

²⁶ If anyone would serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, my servant will be too. Further, if anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

²⁷ “Now my soul is distressed, and what should I say—‘Father, rescue me from this hour’? But this is why I came to this hour—

²⁸ ‘Father, glorify your name!’ ” Then a Voice came out of Heaven, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again!”

²⁹ So the crowd that was standing by and listening said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.”

³⁰ Jesus answered and said: “It was not for my sake that this Voice came, but for your sakes.

³¹ Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be thrown out.

³² While I, if I be lifted up from the earth, I will draw all people to myself.”

³³ (Now He said this to indicate by what kind of death He was about to die.)

¹⁶ At the time, Jesus' disciples did not understand what these things meant. It was only later when he was glorified that they realized what had happened had been prophesied and applied to him.

¹⁷ Many in the crowd had seen Jesus call Lazarus from the tomb and raise him from the dead and were telling the story.

¹⁸ That was the reason so many people went to meet Jesus—because they had heard about this miracle.

¹⁹ The Pharisees said to one other, “Look, we're getting nowhere. Everyone's running after him.”

²⁰ Now some Greeks had come to the festival to worship.

²¹ They came to Philip of Bethsaida in Galilee, and said, “Sir, we'd like to see Jesus.”

²² Philip went and told Andrew. Then they both went to Jesus and told him.

²³ Jesus replied, “The time has come for the Son of man to be glorified.

²⁴ I tell you the truth: unless a grain of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains just one grain. But if it dies, it produces many more grains of wheat.

²⁵ If you love your own life you will lose it, but if you don't love your own life in this world you will keep your life forever.

²⁶ If you want to serve me you need to follow me. My servants will be where I am, and my Father will honor anyone who serves for me.

²⁷ Now I am troubled. What should I say? ‘Father, save me from this coming time of suffering?’ No, for this is why I came—to go through this time of suffering.

²⁸ Father, show the glory of your character.” A voice came from heaven, saying, “I have shown its glory, and I will show it again.”

²⁹ The crowd that was standing there heard it. Some said it thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.

³⁰ Jesus told them, “This voice spoke not for my sake, but for yours.

³¹ Now is the judgment of this world; now the prince of this world will be thrown out.

³² But when I am lifted up from the earth I will attract everyone to me.”

³³ (He said this to point out the kind of death he was going to die.)

¹⁸ And therefore the people came, and met with him, for they heard that he had done this sign.

¹⁹ Therefore the Pharisees said to themselves, Ye see, that we profit nothing; lo! all the world hath gone after him.

²⁰ And there were some heathen men, of them that had come up to worship in the feast day.

²¹ And these came to Philip, that was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and prayed him, and said, Sire, we will see Jesus or we would see Jesus.

²² Philip cometh, and saith to Andrew; and again Andrew and Philip said to Jesus.

²³ And Jesus answered to them, and said, The hour cometh, that man’s Son be clarified.

²⁴ Truly, truly, I say to you, but a corn of wheat fall into the earth, and be dead, it dwelleth alone; but if it be dead, it bringeth forth much fruit.

²⁵ He that loveth his life, shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world, keepeth it into everlasting life.

²⁶ If any man serve me, pursue he me; and where I am, there my minister or my servant shall be. If any man serve me, my Father shall worship him.

²⁷ Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour; but therefore or but for that thing I came into this hour;

²⁸ Father, clarify thy name. And a voice came from heaven, and said, And I have clarified, and again I shall clarify.

²⁹ Therefore the people that stood, and heard, said, that thunder was made; other men said, an angel spake to him.

³⁰ Jesus answered, and said, This voice came not for me, but for you.

³¹ Now is the doom of the world, now the prince of this world shall be cast out.

³² And if I shall be enhanced from the earth, I shall draw all things to myself.

³³ And he said this thing, signifying by what death he was to die.

¹⁶ His disciples knew not (at) first these things, but when Jesus was glorified, then they had mind, that these things were written of him, and these things they did to him. (His disciples at first did not understand the meaning of these things, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered, that these things were written about him, and that the people had done these things for him.)

¹⁷ Therefore the people bare witnessing, that was with him, when he called Lazarus from the grave, and raised him from death or and raised him from (the) dead. (And so the people, who were with him, when he called Lazarus out of the tomb, and raised him from the dead, testified about that.)

²⁰ And there were some heathen men, of them that had come up to worship in the feast day. (And there were some Gentiles, among those who had come to worship on the Feast Day or at the Festival.)

²¹ And these came to Philip, that was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and prayed him, and said, Sire, we will see Jesus, or Sire, we would (like to) see Jesus. (And they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and beseeched him, and said, Sir, we want to see Jesus.)

²² Philip cometh, and saith to Andrew; and again Andrew and Philip said to Jesus.

²³ And Jesus answered to them, and said, The hour cometh, that man’s Son be clarified, (or The time hath come, for man’s Son to be glorified).

²⁴ Truly, truly, I say to you, no but a corn of wheat fall into the earth, and be dead, (or Truly, I tell you the truth, unless a kernel, or a grain, of wheat fall into the earth, and it die), it dwelleth alone; but if it be dead, it bringeth forth much fruit.

²⁵ He that loveth his life, shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world, keepeth it into everlasting life (or keepeth it safe for eternal life).

²⁶ If any man serve me, (pur)sue he me (or follow me); and where I am, there my minister or my servant shall be. If any man serve me, my Father shall worship him (or my Father shall honour him).

²⁷ Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour; but therefore I came into this hour or but for that thing I came into this hour;

²⁸ Father, clarify thy name. And a voice came from heaven, and said, And I have clarified (it), and again I shall clarify (it). (Father, glorify thy name. And a voice came from heaven, and said, I have glorified it, and I shall glorify it again.)

²⁹ Therefore the people that stood (there), and heard, said, that thunder was made; other men said, an angel spake to him.

³⁰ Jesus answered, and said, This voice came not for me, but for you.

³¹ Now is the doom of the world, now the prince of this world shall be cast out. (Now is the Judgement of this world, now the Prince of this world shall be thrown out.)

³² And if I shall be enhanced from the earth, I shall draw all things to myself. (And if I shall be raised or lifted up from the earth, then I shall draw everyone to me.)

³³ And he said this thing, signifying by what death he was to die.

¹⁶ Hise disciplis knewen not first these thingis, but whanne Jhesus was glorified, thanne thei hadden mynde, for these thingis weren writun of hym, and these thingis thei diden to hym.

¹⁷ Therfor the puple bar witnessyng, that was with hym, whanne he clepide Lazarus fro the graue, and reiside hym fro deth.

¹⁸ And therfor the puple cam, and mette with hym, for thei herden that he hadde don this signe.

¹⁹ Therfor the Farisees seiden to hem silf, Ye seen, that we profiten no thing; lo! al the world wente aftir hym.

²⁰ And there weren summe hethene men, of hem that hadden come vp to worschipe in the feeste dai.

²¹ And these camen to Filip, that was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and preieden hym, and seiden, Sire, we wolen se Jhesu.

²² Filip cometh, and seith to Andrew; eft Andrew and Filip seiden to Jhesu.

²³ And Jhesus answerde `to hem, and seide, The our cometh, that mannus sone be clarified.

²⁴ Treuli, treuli, Y seie to you, but a corn of whete falle in to the erthe, and be deed, it dwellith aloone;

²⁵ but if it be deed, it bryngith myche fruyt. He that loueth his lijf, schal leese it; and he that hatith his lijf in this world, kepith it in to euerlastynge lijf.

²⁶ If ony man serue me, sue he me; and where Y am, there my mynystre schal be. If ony man serue me, my fadir schal worschipe hym.

²⁷ Now my soule is troublid, and what schal Y seie? Fadir, saue me fro this our; but therfor Y cam in to this our;

²⁸ fadir, clarifie thi name. And a vois cam fro heuene, and seide, And Y haue clarified, and eft Y schal clarifie.

³⁰ Jhesus answerde, and seide, This vois cam not for me, but for you.

³³ And he seide this thing, signifiynge bi what deth he `was to die.

¹⁶ And these things his disciples did not know at the first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were having been written about him, and these things they did to him.

¹⁷ The multitude, therefore, who are with him, were testifying that he called Lazarus out of the tomb, and did raise him out of the dead;

¹⁸ because of this also did the multitude meet him, because they heard of his having done this sign,

¹⁹ the Pharisees, therefore, said among themselves, 'Ye see that ye do not gain anything, lo, the world did go after him.'

²⁰ And there were certain Greeks out of those coming up that they may worship in the feast,

²¹ these then came near to Philip, who is from Bethsaida of Galilee, and were asking him, saying, 'Sir, we wish to see Jesus;'

²² Philip cometh and telleth Andrew, and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.

²³ And Jesus responded to them, saying, 'The hour hath come that the Son of Man may be glorified;

²⁴ verily, verily, I say to you, if the grain of the wheat, having fallen to the earth, may not die, itself remaineth alone; and if it may die, it doth bear much fruit;

²⁵ he who is loving his life shall lose it, and he who is hating his life in this world — to life age-during shall keep it;

²⁶ if any one may minister to me, let him follow me, and where I am, there also my ministrant shall be; and if any one may minister to me — honour him will the Father.

²⁷ 'Now hath my soul been troubled, and what? shall I say — Father, save me from this hour? — but because of this I came to this hour;

²⁸ Father, glorify Thy name.' There came, therefore, a voice out of the heaven, 'I both glorified, and again I will glorify it;'

²⁹ the multitude, therefore, having stood and heard, were saying that there hath been thunder; others said, 'A messenger hath spoken to him.'

³⁰ Jesus answered and said, 'Not because of me hath this voice come, but because of you;

³¹ now is a judgment of this world, now shall the ruler of this world be cast forth;

³² and I, if I may be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto myself.'

³³ And this he said signifying by what death he was about to die;
