⁶ When therefore he heard that he was sick, he abode at that time two days in the place where he was.

⁷ Then after this he saith to the disciples, Let us go into Judæa again.

⁸ The disciples say unto him, Rabbi, the Jews were but now seeking to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

⁹ Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

¹⁰ But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.

¹¹ These things spake he: and after this he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus is fallen asleep; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

¹² The disciples therefore said unto him, Lord, if he is fallen asleep, he will recover.

¹³ Now Jesus had spoken of his death: but they thought that he spake of taking rest in sleep.

¹⁴ Then Jesus therefore said unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

¹⁵ And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

¹⁶ Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said unto his fellow-disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

¹⁷ So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.

¹⁸ Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off;

¹⁹ and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.

²⁰ Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary still sat in the house.

²¹ Martha therefore said unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

²² And even now I know that, whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee.

²³ Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

²⁴ Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

²⁵ Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth on me, though he die, yet shall he live;

²⁶ and whosoever liveth and believeth on me shall never die. Believest thou this?

²⁷ She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, even he that cometh into the world.

²⁸ And when she had said this, she went away, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Teacher is here, and calleth thee.

²⁹ And she, when she heard it, arose quickly, and went unto him.

³⁰ (Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met him.)

³¹ The Jews then who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was going unto the tomb to weep there.

³² Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, and saw him, fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

³³ When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

³⁴ and said, Where have ye laid him? They say unto him, Lord, come and see.

³⁵ Jesus wept.

³⁶ The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him!

³⁷ But some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of him that was blind, have caused that this man also should not die?

³⁸ Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.

³⁹ Jesus saith, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time the body decayeth; for he hath been dead four days.

⁴⁰ Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou believedst, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

⁴¹ So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou heardest me.

⁴² And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the multitude that standeth around I said it, that they may believe that thou didst send me.

⁴³ And when he had thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

⁴⁴ He that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

⁴⁵ Many therefore of the Jews, who came to Mary and beheld that which he did, believed on him.

⁴⁶ But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many signs.

⁴⁸ If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.

⁴⁹ But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

⁶ Yet, when He heard that Lazarus was sick, Jesus stayed where He was for two more days.

⁷ After this, He said to the disciples, “Let’s go back to Judea.”

⁸ The disciples said to Him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just recently trying to stone You! Are You really going back there?”

⁹ Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks by day doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

¹⁰ But anyone who walks by night stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.”

¹¹ After He had said this, He told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him up.”

¹² The disciples therefore said to Him, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will recover.”

¹³ Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was talking about literal sleep.

¹⁴ So Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead,

¹⁵ and I am glad for your sakes that I wasn’t there, so that you may believe — but let’s go to him.”

¹⁶ Therefore Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go, too, that we may die with Him.”

¹⁷ When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.

¹⁸ Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away,

¹⁹ and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

²⁰ When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed home.

²¹ Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.

²² Even now I know that God will give you whatever You ask of Him.”

²³ Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.”

²⁴ Martha replied, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”

²⁵ Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me will live even if they die,

²⁶ and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

²⁷ “Yes, Lord,” she answered, “I have believed that You are the Christ, God’s Son, who was to come into the world.”

²⁸ When she had said this, she went back and called Mary, her sister, saying secretly, “The Teacher is here, and is asking for you.”

²⁹ When she heard this, she arose quickly, and went to Him.

³⁰ Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha met Him.

³¹ The Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go out. They followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”

³² When Mary came to where Jesus was, she saw Him, and fell at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.”

³³ When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled.

³⁴ He asked, “Where have you laid him?” They replied, “Lord, come and see.”

³⁵ Jesus wept.

³⁶ So the Jews were saying, “See how He loved him!”

³⁷ But some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of the blind man, have kept this man from dying?”

³⁸ Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a boulder was placed against the entrance.

³⁹ Jesus said, “Take away the boulder.” Martha, the dead man’s sister, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, because he has been dead four days.”

⁴⁰ Jesus told her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you would believe you would see God’s glory?”

⁴¹ Then they took the boulder away from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard me.

⁴² I know that You always hear me, but because of the people who are standing here I said this, that they may believe that You sent me.”

⁴³ Now when He had said these things, He called loudly, “Lazarus, come out!”

⁴⁴ He who had died came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus told them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

⁴⁵ Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen the things Jesus did, believed in Him.

⁴⁶ But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus did.

⁴⁷ Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, “What are we doing? For this Man performs many signs.

⁴⁸ If we let Him go on like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

⁴⁹ Then a certain one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, told them, “You don’t know anything,

¹¹ These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

¹² Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

¹³ Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

¹⁴ Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

³¹ The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.

³² Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

³³ When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

³⁴ And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

³⁵ Jesus wept.

⁴¹ Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

⁴² And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

⁴³ And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

⁷ But Jesus wanted to see Lazarus. So he said to us disciples, “Let's go back to Judea.”

⁸ We said, “Teacher, just a short while ago the Jewish leaders SYN wanted to kill you by throwing stones at you. So ◄ we think that you should not go back there again!/ are you sure that you want to go back there again?► RHQ”

⁹ To show us that nothing bad could happen to him until the time that God had chosen MET, Jesus replied, “There are RHQ twelve hours in the daytime, which is enough time to do what God wants us to do. People who walk in the daytime will not stumble over things they cannot see, because they see things by the light from the sun.

¹⁰ It is when people walk in the nighttime that they stumble over things, because they have no light.”

¹¹ After he said that, he told us, “Our friend Lazarus has gone to sleep. But I will go there so that I can wake him up.”

¹² So we said to him, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will get well. So you do not need to risk your life by going there.”

¹³ Jesus was speaking figuratively about Lazarus' death, but we thought that he was talking about really being asleep.

¹⁴ So then he told us plainly, “Lazarus is dead.

¹⁵ But for your sake I am glad that I was not there when he died, because I want you to believe more firmly that I ◄ am the Messiah/came from God►. So now, instead of staying here, let's go to him.”

¹⁶ Then Thomas, who was {whom they} called ❛The Twin❜, said to the rest of us disciples, “Let's all go, so that we may die with Jesus when his enemies kill him.”

¹⁷ When we arrived close to Bethany, someone told Jesus that Lazarus had died and had been buried and his body had been in the tomb for four days.

¹⁸ Bethany is less than ◄two miles/three kilometers► from Jerusalem.

¹⁹ Many Jews had come from Jerusalem to console Martha and Mary over the death of their younger brother.

²⁰ When Martha heard someone say that Jesus was coming, she went along the road to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house.

²¹ When Martha got to where Jesus was, she said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died because you would have healed him!

²² But I know that even now God will do for you whatever you ask concerning my brother.”

²³ Jesus said to her, “Your brother will become alive again!”

²⁴ Martha said to him, “I know that he will become alive again when all people become alive again on the Judgment day.”

²⁵ Jesus said to her, “I am the one who enables people to become alive again and who causes people to live eternally. Those who believe in me, even if they die, will live again.

²⁶ Furthermore, all those who believe in me while they are alive, their souls will not die forever. Do you believe that?”

²⁷ She said to him, “Yes, Lord! I believe that you are the Messiah, ◄the Son of God/the man who is also God►. You are the one God promised to send into the world!”

²⁸ After she said that, she returned to the house and took her younger sister, Mary, aside and said to her, “The Teacher is close to our village, and he wants to talk to you.”

²⁹ When Mary heard that, she got up quickly and went to him.

³⁰ Jesus had not yet entered the village; he was still at the place where Martha met him.

³¹ The Jews who were in the house with Mary, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go outside. So they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb where they had buried Lazarus, in order to cry there.

³² When Mary got to where Jesus was and saw him, she prostrated herself at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my younger brother would not have died!”

³³ When Jesus saw her crying, and saw that the Jews who had come with her were also crying, he was very angry that Satan had caused Lazarus to die (OR, very troubled) and disturbed in his spirit.

³⁴ He said, “Where have you buried ◄him/his body►?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.”

³⁵ Jesus began to cry.

³⁶ Then some of the Jews said, “Look how much he loved Lazarus!”

³⁷ But some others said, “He enabled a blind man to see. So ◄he should have been able to heal this man so that he did not die!/why did he not heal this man so that he did not die?► RHQ”

³⁸ Within himself Jesus was again very angry about Lazarus dying (OR, very troubled). He came to the tomb. It was a cave. The entrance had been covered with a large stone.

³⁹ Jesus said, “Take away the stone!” Martha, who, as I mentioned before, was an older sister of the man who had died, said, “Lord, his body has been in the tomb for four days, so now there will be a bad smell!”

⁴⁰ Jesus said to her, “I told RHQ you that if you believed in ◄ me/what I can do►, you would see how great God is! Have you forgotten that?”

⁴¹ So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up toward heaven and said, “My Father, I thank you that you heard me when I prayed about this earlier.

⁴² I know that you always hear me when I pray. But instead of just praying silently, I said that for the sake of the people who are standing here. I want them to believe that you sent me.”

⁴³ After he said that, he shouted, “Lazarus, come out!”

⁴⁴ The man who had been dead came out! The strips of cloth were still wrapped around his hands and feet, and a cloth was still around his face, but he came out! Jesus said to them, “Take off the cloths so that he can walk easily!” So they did that.

⁴⁵ As a result, many of the Jews who had come to see Mary and who had seen what Jesus did, believed that he ◄ was the Messiah/had come from God►.

⁴⁶ But some of the others went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered all the members of the Jewish Council together. They started saying to each other, “What are we going to do about Jesus? He is performing many miracles!

⁴⁸ If we allow him to keep doing this, everyone will believe ◄in him/that he is the Messiah►, and they will make him their king. Then the Roman army will come and destroy our Temple and our whole nation of Israel!”

⁴⁹ One of the Jewish Council members was Caiaphas. He was the Jewish high priest that year. Hinting that they should get rid of Jesus, he said to them, “You talk as though you do not know anything HYP!

²⁶ Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

³² Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.”

³³ When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit and was troubled,

³⁴ and said, “Where have you laid him?” They told him, “Lord, come and see.”

³⁵ Jesus wept.

³⁷ Some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?”

³⁸ Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.

³⁹ Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”

⁴⁰ Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?”

⁴¹ So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you listened to me.

⁴² I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude standing around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.”

⁴³ When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”

⁴⁴ He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.”

⁴⁵ Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did believed in him.

⁴⁶ But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs.

⁴⁸ If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

⁴⁹ But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all,

⁶ When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was.

⁷ Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let’s go into Judea again.”

⁸ The disciples asked him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you. Are you going there again?”

⁹ Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

¹⁰ But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.”

¹¹ He said these things, and after that, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.”

¹² The disciples therefore said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”

¹³ Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.

¹⁴ So Jesus said to them plainly then, “Lazarus is dead.

¹⁵ I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him.”

¹⁶ Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s also go, that we may die with him.”

¹⁷ So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.

¹⁸ Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away.

¹⁹ Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.

²⁰ Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.

²¹ Therefore Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.

²² Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.”

²³ Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

²⁴ Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

⁷ Then after that time he said to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

⁸ The disciples said to him, Master, the Jews were attempting only the other day to have you stoned, and are you going back there again?

⁹ Then Jesus said in answer, Are there not twelve hours in the day? A man may go about in the day without falling, because he sees the light of this world.

¹⁰ But if a man goes about in the night, he may have a fall because the light is not in him.

¹¹ These things said he: and after that he said to them, Lazarus our friend is at rest; but I go so that I may make him come out of his sleep.

¹² Then his disciples said to him, Lord, if he is resting he will get well.

¹³ Jesus, however, was talking of his death: but they had the idea that he was talking about taking rest in sleep.

¹⁴ Then Jesus said to them clearly, Lazarus is dead.

¹⁵ And because of you I am glad I was not there, so that you may have faith; but let us go to him.

¹⁶ Then Thomas, who was named Didymus, said to the other disciples, Let us go so that we may be with him in death.

¹⁷ Now when Jesus came, he made the discovery that Lazarus had been put into the earth four days before.

¹⁸ Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about two miles away;

¹⁹ And a number of Jews had come to Martha and Mary to give them comfort about their brother.

²⁰ When Martha had the news that Jesus was on the way, she went out to him, but Mary did not go from the house.

²¹ Then Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.

²² But I am certain that, even now, whatever request you make to God, God will give it to you.

²³ Jesus said to her, Your brother will come to life again.

²⁴ Martha said to him, I am certain that he will come to life again when all come back from the dead at the last day.

²⁵ Jesus said to her, I am myself that day and that life; he who has faith in me will have life even if he is dead;

²⁶ And no one who is living and has faith in me will ever see death. Is this your faith?

²⁷ She said to him, Yes, Lord: my faith is that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.

²⁸ And having said this, she went away and said secretly to her sister Mary, The Master is here and has sent for you.

²⁹ And Mary, hearing this, got up quickly and went to him.

³⁰ Now Jesus had not at this time come into the town, but was still in the place where Martha had seen him.

³¹ Then the Jews who were with her in the house, comforting her, when they saw Mary get up quickly and go out, went after her in the belief that she was going to the place of the dead and would be weeping there.

³² When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she went down at his feet, saying, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.

³³ And when Jesus saw her weeping, and saw the Jews weeping who came with her, his spirit was moved and he was troubled,

³⁴ And said, Where have you put him? They said, Come and see, Lord.

³⁵ And Jesus himself was weeping.

³⁶ So the Jews said, See how dear he was to him!

³⁷ But some of them said, This man, who made open the eyes of the blind man, was he not able to keep his friend from death?

³⁸ So Jesus, deeply troubled in heart, came to the place of the dead. It was a hole in the rock, and a stone was over the opening.

³⁹ Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said, Lord, by this time the body will be smelling, for he has been dead four days.

⁴⁰ Jesus said to her, Did I not say to you that if you had faith you would see the glory of God?

⁴¹ So they took away the stone. And Jesus, looking up to heaven, said, Father, I give praise to you for hearing me.

⁴² I was certain that your ears are at all times open to me, but I said it because of these who are here, so that they may see that you sent me.

⁴³ Then he said in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out!

⁴⁴ And he who was dead came out, with linen bands folded tightly about his hands and feet, and a cloth about his face. Jesus said to them, Make him free and let him go.

⁴⁵ Then a number of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did had belief in him.

⁴⁶ But some of them went to the Pharisees with the news of what Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ Then the high priests and the Pharisees had a meeting and said, What are we doing? This man is doing a number of signs.

⁴⁸ If we let him go on in this way, everybody will have belief in him and the Romans will come and take away our place and our nation.

⁴⁹ But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, You have no knowledge of anything;

⁶ When therefore he heard, He is sick, he remained two days then in the place where he was.

⁷ Then after this he says to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

⁸ The disciples say to him, Rabbi, even but now the Jews sought to stone thee, and goest thou thither again?

⁹ Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walk in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world;

¹⁰ but if any one walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.

¹¹ These things said he; and after this he says to them, Lazarus, our friend, is fallen asleep, but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.

⁴¹ They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifted up his eyes on high and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me;

⁴² but I knew that thou always hearest me; but on account of the crowd who stand around I have said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

⁴³ And having said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

⁴⁴ And the dead came forth, bound feet and hands with graveclothes, and his face was bound round with a handkerchief. Jesus says to them, Loose him and let him go.

⁴⁵ Many therefore of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what he had done, believed on him;

⁴⁶ but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ The chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man does many signs.

¹⁷ Therefore when He had come, Jesus found that he had already been in the tomb four days.

¹⁸ Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles away.

¹⁹ And many of the Jews had come to the women around Martha and Mary, so that they might console them concerning their brother.

²⁰ Then Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, met Him, but Mary was sitting in the house.

²¹ Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.

²² But even now I know that whatever You may ask of God, God will give You.”

²³ Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

²⁴ Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”

²⁵ Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He that believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.

²⁶ And everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

²⁷ She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”

²⁸ And when she had said these things, she went out and secretly called Mary her sister, saying, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.”

²⁹ As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came to Him.

³⁰ Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met Him.

³¹ Then the Jews who were with her in the house and consoling her, when they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb, so that she may weep there.”

³² Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, seeing Him, she fell down at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”

³³ Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled.

³⁴ And He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.”

³⁵ Jesus wept.

³⁶ Therefore the Jews were saying, “Look how He loved him!”

³⁷ But some of them said, “Could not this Man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have done something to keep this man from dying?”

³⁸ Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it.

³⁹ Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the one having died, said to Him, “Lord, already there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”

⁴⁰ Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?”

⁴¹ Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.

⁴² And I knew that You always hear Me, but because of the people standing around I said this, so that they may believe that You sent Me.”

⁴³ And having said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!”

⁴⁴ And the one having died came out, bound hands and feet with grave clothes, and his face was wrapped in a handkerchief. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.”

⁴⁵ Therefore many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and seeing the things which Jesus had done, believed in Him.

⁴⁶ But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, “What are we doing? For this Man works many signs.

⁴⁸ If we leave Him alone in this way, all will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and will take away both our place and nation.”

⁴⁹ But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You don't know anything,

⁶ So, when He heard that he was sick He stayed where He was two more days!

⁷ Then after this He says to the disciples, “Let us go into Judea again.”

⁸ The disciples say to Him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now trying to stone you, and you are going back there?”

⁹ Jesus answered: “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks during the day he doesn't stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

¹⁰ But if anyone walks in the night he does stumble, because the light is not in him.”

¹¹ Having said these things He says to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going in order to awaken him.”

¹² His disciples said to Him, “Lord, if he is sleeping he will get well.”

¹³ But Jesus had spoken of his death, while they thought He was talking about natural sleep.

¹⁴ So then Jesus said to them plainly: “Lazarus died.

¹⁵ And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”

¹⁶ Then Thomas (called Twin) said to his fellow disciples, “Let's us go too, so that we may die with Him.”

¹⁷ So when Jesus had come, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days.

²⁷ She says to Him, “Yes, Lord, I have come to believe that You are the Messiah, the Son of God, the One coming into the world.”

²⁸ Having said these things she went and called her sister Mary, saying privately, “The Teacher is here and is calling you!”

²⁹ Upon hearing it she gets up quickly and goes to Him.

³⁰ (Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was in the place where Martha met Him.

³¹ Then the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, when they saw Mary get up quickly and go out, they followed her saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”)

³² Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, upon seeing Him she fell at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here my brother would not have died!”

³³ So when Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled.

³⁴ And He said, “Where have you put him?” They say to Him, “Lord, come and see.”

³⁵ Jesus wept.

³⁶ So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”

³⁷ But some of them said, “Couldn't this man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have also kept this one from dying?”

³⁸ Then, groaning within Himself again, Jesus arrived at the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.

³⁹ Jesus says, “Remove the stone!” Martha, the sister of the deceased, says to Him, “Lord, he already stinks; it's been four days!”

⁴⁰ Jesus says to her, “Did I not say to you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?”

⁴¹ Then they took away the stone from where the deceased was lying. Jesus raised His eyes and said: “Father, I thank You that You heard me.

⁴² I know that You always hear me, but I spoke for the sake of the crowd standing around, so that they may believe that You sent me.”

⁴³ Upon saying these things He shouted with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”

⁴⁴ And out the deceased came! Bound hand and foot with bandages, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus says to them, “Loose him and let him go.”

⁴⁵ So many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed into Him.

⁴⁶ But some of them went off to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ Then the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a council and said: “What can we do? Because this man performs many miraculous signs;

⁴⁸ if we let him go on like this everybody will believe into him; and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation!”

⁴⁹ But one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them: “You know nothing at all!

⁶ and had heard that Lazarus was sick, he remained where he was for two more days.

⁷ Then he told the disciples, “Let's return to Judea.”

⁸ The disciples replied, “Rabbi, just a few days ago the Jews were trying to stone you. Do you really want to go back there now?”

⁹ “Aren't there twelve hours in a day?” Jesus replied.

¹⁰ “If you walk during the day you don't stumble because you can see where you're going by the light of this world. But if you walk during the night you stumble because you have no light.”

¹¹ After telling them this, he said, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I'm going to go there and wake him up!”

¹² The disciples said, “Lord, if he's sleeping then he'll get better.”

¹³ Jesus had been referring to the death of Lazarus, but the disciples thought he meant actual sleep.

¹⁴ So Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead.

¹⁵ For your sake I'm glad I wasn't there, because now you will be able to trust in me. Let's go and see him.”

¹⁶ Thomas, the Twin, said to his fellow-disciples, “Let's go too so we can die with him.”

¹⁷ When he arrived, Jesus learned that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days.

¹⁸ Bethany was just two miles from Jerusalem,

¹⁹ and many Jews had come to console Mary and Martha at the loss of their brother.

²⁰ When Martha found out that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.

²¹ Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you'd been here, my brother wouldn't have died.

²² But I'm certain that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”

²³ Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.”

²⁴ “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day,” Martha answered.

²⁵ Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who trust in me will live, even though they die.

²⁶ All who live in me and trust in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

²⁷ “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one expected to come to this world.”

²⁸ When she had said this, she went and told her sister Mary in private, “The Teacher's here, and asking to see you.”

²⁹ As soon as she heard, Mary quickly got up and went to see him.

³⁰ Jesus hadn't arrived in the village yet. He was still at the place where Martha had met him.

³¹ The Jews who had been comforting Mary in the home saw how she'd got up quickly and left. So they followed her, thinking she was going to the tomb to weep there.

³² When Mary arrived at the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you'd been here, my brother wouldn't have died.”

³³ When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying as well, he was very troubled and upset.

³⁴ “Where have you laid him?” he asked. They replied, “Lord, come and see.”

³⁵ Then Jesus cried too.

³⁶ “See how much he loved him,” the Jews said.

³⁷ But some of them said, “If he could open the eyes of a blind man, couldn't he have kept Lazarus from dying?”

³⁸ Very troubled, Jesus went to the tomb. It was a cave with a large stone placed at the entrance.

³⁹ “Remove the stone,” Jesus told them. But Martha, the dead man's sister, said, “Lord, by now there will be a terrible smell, for he's been dead for four days.”

⁴⁰ “Didn't I tell you that if you trusted me you would see God's glory?” Jesus replied.

⁴¹ So they removed the stone. Jesus looked heavenwards, and said, “Father, thank you for listening to me.

⁴² I know you always listen to me. I said this because of the crowd standing here so that they will believe that you sent me.”

⁴³ After saying this, Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!”

⁴⁴ The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of linen, and with a cloth around his face. “Unbind him and set him free,” Jesus told them.

⁴⁵ Consequently many of the Jews who had come to comfort Mary and who saw what Jesus did put their trust in him.

⁴⁶ But others went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the ruling council. “What shall we do?” they asked. “This man is doing many miracles.

⁴⁸ If we allow him to continue, everybody will believe in him, and then the Romans will destroy both the Temple and our status as a nation.”

⁴⁹ “You don't understand anything!” said Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.

⁶ And after he had heard that he was sicke, yet abode hee two dayes still in the same place where he was.

⁷ Then after that, said he to his disciples, Let vs goe into Iudea againe.

⁸ The disciples saide vnto him, Master, the Iewes lately sought to stone thee, and doest thou goe thither againe?

⁹ Iesus answered, Are there not twelue houres in the day? If a man walke in the day, hee stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

¹⁰ But if a man walke in the night, hee stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

¹¹ These things spake he, and after, he said vnto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth: but I goe to wake him vp.

¹² Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleepe, he shalbe safe.

¹³ Howbeit, Iesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of the naturall sleepe.

¹⁴ Then saide Iesus vnto them plainely, Lazarus is dead.

¹⁵ And I am glad for your sakes, that I was not there, that ye may beleeue: but let vs go vnto him.

¹⁶ Then saide Thomas (which is called Didymus) vnto his felow disciples, Let vs also goe, that we may die with him.

¹⁷ Then came Iesus, and found that he had lien in the graue foure dayes alreadie.

¹⁸ (Nowe Bethania was neere vnto Hierusalem, about fifteene furlongs off.)

¹⁹ And many of ye Iewes were come to Martha and Marie to comfort them for their brother.

²⁰ Then Martha, when shee heard that Iesus was comming, went to meete him: but Mary sate still in the house.

²¹ Then said Martha vnto Iesus, Lord, if thou hadst bene here, my brother had not bene dead.

²² But now I know also, that whatsoeuer thou askest of God, God will giue it thee.

²³ Iesus said vnto her, Thy brother shall rise againe.

²⁴ Martha said vnto him, I know that he shall rise againe in the resurrection at the last day.

²⁵ Iesus saide vnto her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that beleeueth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he liue.

²⁶ And whosoeuer liueth, and beleeueth in me, shall neuer die: Beleeuest thou this?

²⁷ She said vnto him, Yea, Lord, I beleeue that thou art that Christ that Sonne of God, which should come into the world.

²⁸ And when she had so saide, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.

²⁹ And when she heard it, shee arose quickly, and came vnto him.

³⁰ For Iesus was not yet come into the towne, but was in the place where Martha met him.

³¹ The Iewes then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they sawe Marie, that she rose vp hastily, and went out, folowed her, saying, She goeth vnto the graue, to weepe there.

³² Then when Mary was come where Iesus was, and sawe him, she fell downe at his feete, saying vnto him, Lord, if thou haddest bene here, my brother had not bene dead.

³³ When Iesus therefore saw her weepe, and the Iewes also weepe which came with her, hee groned in the spirit, and was troubled in himselfe,

³⁴ And saide, Where haue ye layde him? They said vnto him, Lord, come and see.

³⁵ And Iesus wept.

³⁶ Then saide the Iewes, Beholde, how he loued him.

³⁷ And some of them saide, Coulde not he, which opened the eyes of the blinde, haue made also, that this man should not haue died?

³⁸ Iesus therefore againe groned in himselfe, and came to the graue. And it was a caue, and a stone was layde vpon it.

³⁹ Iesus saide, Take ye away the stone. Martha the sister of him that was dead, said vnto him, Lord, he stinketh alreadie: for he hath bene dead foure dayes.

⁴⁰ Iesus saide vnto her, Saide I not vnto thee, that if thou diddest beleeue, thou shouldest see the glorie of God?

⁴¹ Then they tooke away the stone from the place where the dead was layde. And Iesus lift vp his eyes, and saide, Father, I thanke thee, because thou hast heard me.

⁴² I knowe that thou hearest me alwayes, but because of the people that stand by, I said it, that they may beleeue, that thou hast sent me.

⁴³ As hee had spoken these things, hee cried with a loude voyce, Lazarus, come foorth.

⁴⁴ Then he that was dead, came forth, bound hande and foote with bandes, and his face was bound with a napkin. Iesus said vnto them, Loose him, and let him goe.

⁴⁵ Then many of the Iewes, which came to Mary, and had seene the thinges, which Iesus did, beleeued in him.

⁴⁶ But some of them went their way to the Pharises, and told them what things Iesus had done.

⁴⁷ Then gathered the hie Priests, and the Pharises a councill, and said, What shall we doe? For this man doeth many miracles.

⁴⁸ If we let him thus alone, all men will beleeue in him, and the Romanes will come and take away both our place, and the nation.

⁴⁹ Then one of them named Caiaphas, which was the hie Priest that same yere, said vnto them, Ye perceiue nothing at all,

⁶ When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

⁸ His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

³⁴ and said, Where have ye laid him? They say to him, Lord, come and see.

⁴⁰ Jesus saith to her, Did I not tell thee, that if thou wouldst believe, thou shouldst see the glory of God?

⁴¹ They therefore took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father! I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

⁴² Yet I knew that thou hearest me always; but for the sake of the multitude standing around I said it, that they might believe that thou didst send me.

⁴³ And having thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth!

⁴⁴ He that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith to them, Loose him, and let him go.

⁴⁸ If we thus let him alone, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away both our place and nation.

⁴⁹ And a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high-priest that year, said to them, Ye know nothing at all;

⁶ Yet, when he heard of the illness of Lazarus, he still stayed two days in the place where he was.

⁷ Then, after that, he said to his disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.”

⁸ “Rabbi,” they replied, “the authorities there were but just now seeking to stone you; and are you going there again?”

⁹ “Are not there twelve hours in the day?” answered Jesus. “If someone walks about in the daytime, they don't stumble, because they can see the light of the sun;

¹⁰ but, if they walk about at night, they stumble, because they have not the light.”

¹¹ And, when he had said this, he added, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going so that I may wake him.”

¹² “If he has fallen asleep, Master, he will get well,” said the disciples.

¹³ But Jesus meant that he was dead; they, however, supposed that he was speaking of natural sleep.

¹⁴ Then he said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead;

¹⁵ and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may learn to believe in me. But let us go to him.”

¹⁶ At this, Thomas, who was called ‘The Twin,’ said to his fellow disciples, “Let us go too, so that we may die with him.”

¹⁷ When Jesus reached the place, he found that Lazarus had been four days in the tomb already.

¹⁸ Bethany being only about two miles from Jerusalem,

¹⁹ a number of the people had come there to comfort Martha and Mary because of brother's death.

²⁰ When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat quietly at home.

²¹ “Master,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

²² Even now, I know that God will grant you whatever you ask him.”

²³ “Your brother will rise to life,” said Jesus.

²⁴ “I know that he will,” replied Martha, “in the resurrection at the Last day.”

²⁵ “I am the resurrection and the life,” said Jesus. “He who believes in me will live, though he die;

²⁶ and he who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

²⁷ “Yes Master,” she answered; “I have learnt to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”

²⁸ After saying this, Martha went and called her sister Mary, and whispered, “The teacher is here, and is asking for you.”

²⁹ As soon as Mary heard that, she got up quickly, and went to meet him.

³⁰ Jesus had not then come into the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.

³¹ So the people, who were in the house with Mary, comforting her, when they saw her get up quickly and go out, followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.

³² When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she threw herself at his feet. “Master,” she exclaimed, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died!”

³³ When Jesus saw her weeping, and the people who had come with her weeping also, he groaned deeply, and was greatly distressed.

³⁴ “Where have you buried him?” he asked. “Come and see, Master,” they answered.

³⁵ Jesus burst into tears.

³⁶ “How he must have loved him!” the people exclaimed;

³⁷ but some of them said, “Could not this man, who gave sight to the blind man, have also prevented Lazarus from dying?”

³⁸ Again groaning inwardly, Jesus came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against the mouth of it.

³⁹ “Move the stone away,” said Jesus. “Master,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time the smell must be offensive, for this is the fourth day since his death.”

⁴⁰ “Didn't I tell you,” replied Jesus, “that, if you would believe in me, you should see the glory of God?”

⁴¹ So they moved the stone away; and Jesus, with uplifted eyes, said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard my prayer;

⁴² I know that you always hear me; but I say this for the sake of the people standing near, so that they may believe that you has sent me as your messenger.”

⁴³ Then, after saying this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus! Come out!”

⁴⁴ The dead man came out, wrapped hand and foot in a winding-sheet; his face, too, had been wrapped in a cloth. “Set him free,” said Jesus, “and let him go.”

⁴⁵ In consequence of this, many of the people, who had come to visit Mary and had seen what Jesus did, learnt to believe in him.

⁴⁶ Some of them, however, went to the Pharisees, and told them what he had done.

⁴⁷ The chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the High Council, and said, “What are we to do, now that this man is giving so many signs?

⁴⁸ If we allow him to continue as we are doing, everyone will believe in him; and the Romans will come and will take from us both our city and our Nationality.”

²² Even now I know that, whatever you ask of God, God will give you.”

²⁸ And assone as she had so sayde she went her waye and called Marie her sister secretly sayinge: The master is come and calleth for the

⁴⁸ Yf we let him scape thus all men will beleve on him and the Romaynes shall come and take awaye oure countre and the people.

⁴⁹ And one of them named Cayphas which was the hieprest that same yeare sayde vnto them: Ye perceave nothinge at all

⁸ The disciples asked him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you. Are you going there again?”

¹⁰ But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.”

⁷ And after these things he said to his disciples, Go we again into Judea.

³² But when Mary was come where Jesus was, she seeing him felled down to his feet, and said to him, Lord, if thou haddest been here, my brother had not be dead.

³³ Therefore when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping that were with her, he made noise in spirit, and troubled himself,

³⁴ and said, Where have ye laid him? They said to him, Lord, come, and see.

³⁵ And Jesus wept.

³⁷ And some of them said, Whether this man that opened the eyes of the born-blind man, might not make that this should not die?

³⁸ Therefore Jesus again making noise in himself, came to the grave. And there was a den, and a stone was laid thereon.

³⁹ And Jesus saith, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him, Lord, he stinketh now, for he hath lain four days or soothly he is of four days dead.

⁴⁰ Jesus saith to her, Have I not said to thee, that if thou believest, thou shalt see the glory of God?

⁴¹ Therefore they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I do thankings to thee, for thou hast heard me;

⁴² and I wist, that thou evermore hearest me, but for the people that standeth about, I said, that they believe, that thou hast sent me.

⁴³ When he had said these things, he cried with a great voice, Lazarus, come forth, or Lazarus, come thou out.

⁴⁴ And anon he that was dead, came out, bound the hands and feet with bonds, and his face bound with a sudarium, or sweating cloth. And Jesus saith to them, Unbind ye him, and suffer ye him to go forth.

⁴⁵ Therefore many of the Jews that came to Mary and Martha, and saw what things Jesus did, believed in him.

⁴⁶ But some of them went to the Pharisees, and said to them, what things Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ Therefore the bishops, and the Pharisees gathered a council against Jesus, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles or signs.

⁴⁸ If we leave him thus, all men shall believe in him; and Romans shall come, and shall take our place, and our folk.

⁴⁹ But one of them, Caiaphas by name, when he was bishop of that year, said to them, Ye know nothing,

⁶ Therefore when Jesus heard, that he was sick, then he dwelled in the same place (for) two days.

⁷ And after these things he said to his disciples, Go we again into Judea.

⁸ The disciples say to him, Master or Rabbi, now the Jews sought to stone thee, and again goest thou thither? (The disciples said to him, Teacher, not long ago the Jews sought to stone thee there, and now thou goest there again?)

⁹ Jesus answered, Whether there be not twelve hours of the day? (or Be there not twelve hours in the day?) If any man wander in the day or Whoever walketh in the day, he hurteth not (himself), for he seeth the light of this world.

¹⁰ But if he wander in the night (or But if he walk in the night), he stumbleth, for (the) light is not in (or with) him.

¹¹ He said these things, and after these things he saith to them, Lazarus, our friend, sleepeth, but I go to raise him from sleep.

¹² Therefore his disciples said, Lord, if he sleepeth, he shall be safe. (And so his disciples said, Lord, if he sleepeth, then he shall be secure or he shall be whole again.)

¹³ But Jesus had said of his death; but they guessed, that he said of the sleeping of sleep.

¹⁴ Then therefore Jesus said to them openly, Lazarus is dead;

¹⁵ and I have joy for you, that ye believe, for I was not there; but go we to him. (and I am happy for you, that your faith will increase, because I was not there; let us go to him.)

¹⁶ Therefore Thomas, that is said Didymus, said to (his) even-disciples, Go we also, that we die with him. (And Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, Let us also go, so that we can die with him.)

¹⁷ And so Jesus came, and found him having then four days in the grave.

¹⁸ And Bethany was beside Jerusalem, as it were fifteen furlongs.

¹⁹ And many of the Jews came to Mary and Martha, to comfort them of their brother (or to comfort them over their brother’s death).

²⁰ Therefore as Martha heard, that Jesus came, she ran to him; but Mary sat at home.

²¹ Therefore Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if thou haddest been here, my brother had not be dead, (or Lord, if thou haddest been here, my brother would not have died).

²² But now I know, that whatever things thou shalt ask of God, God shall give to thee.

²³ Jesus saith to her, Thy brother shall rise again.

²⁴ Martha saith to him, I know, that he shall rise again in the again-rising in the last day. (Martha said to him, I know, that he shall rise again at the resurrection on the Last Day.)

²⁵ Jesus saith to her, I am again-rising and life (or I am the resurrection and the life); he that believeth in me, yea, though he be dead, he shall live;

²⁶ and each that liveth or and all that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die into without end. Believest thou this thing?

²⁷ She saith to him, Yea, Lord, I have believed, that thou art Christ, the Son of the living God, that hast come into this world. (She said to him, Yes, Lord, I do believe, that thou art the Messiah, the Son of the living God, who hath come into this world.)

²⁸ And when she had said this thing, she went, and called Mary, her sister, in silence, and said, The Master is come, and calleth thee. (And after she had said this, she went back home, and called aside her sister Mary, and said, The Teacher hath come, and calleth for thee.)

²⁹ She, as she heard, arose anon (or got up at once), and came to him.

³⁰ And Jesus came not yet into the castle (or And Jesus was not yet in the village), but he was yet in that place, where Martha had come to meet him.

³¹ Therefore the Jews that were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose swiftly, and went out, they (pur)sued her (or they followed her), and said, For she goeth to the grave, to weep there.

³² But when Mary was come (to) where Jesus was, she seeing him felled down to his feet, and said to him, Lord, if thou haddest been here, my brother had not be dead, (or Lord, if thou haddest been here, my brother would not have died).

³³ Therefore when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping that were with her, he made noise in (his) spirit (or he sighed loudly), and (he was) troubled himself,

³⁴ and said, Where have ye laid him? They said to him, Lord, come, and see.

³⁵ And Jesus wept.

³⁶ Therefore the Jews said, Lo! how he loved him.

³⁷ And some of them said, Whether this man that opened the eyes of the born-blind man, might not make that this (man) should not die?

³⁸ Therefore Jesus again making noise in himself, came to the grave. And there was a den, and a stone was laid thereon. (And so Jesus again sighing loudly, came to the tomb. And it was a cave, and a stone was laid against the entrance to it.)

³⁹ And Jesus saith, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him, Lord, he stinketh now, for he hath lain (there) four days or soothly he is of four days dead.

⁴⁰ Jesus saith to her, Have I not said to thee, that if thou believest, thou shalt see the glory of God?

⁴¹ Therefore they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I do thankings to thee, (or Father, I give thanks to thee), for thou hast heard me;

⁴² and I knew, that thou (for)evermore hearest me, (or and I know, that thou always hearest me), but for the people that standeth about, I said (this), (so) that they believe, that thou hast sent me.

⁴³ When he had said these things, he cried with a great voice, Lazarus, come forth, or Lazarus, come thou out.

⁴⁴ And anon he that was dead, came out, bound the hands and feet with bonds, and his face bound with a sudarium, or (a) sweating cloth, (or a napkin). And Jesus saith to them, Unbind ye him, and suffer ye him to go forth. (And at once he who was dead, came out, and his hands and his feet were bound with bonds, and his face was bound with a cloth. And Jesus said to them, Unbind him, and allow him to go forth.)

⁴⁵ Therefore many of the Jews that came to Mary and Martha, and saw what things Jesus did, believed in him.

⁴⁶ But some of them went to the Pharisees, and said to them, what things Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ Therefore the bishops (or And so the high priests), and the Pharisees gathered a council against Jesus, and said, What do we (do)? for this man doeth many miracles or many signs.

⁴⁸ If we leave him thus, all men shall believe in him; and (then the) Romans shall come, and shall take (away) our place, and our folk. (If we leave him alone, everyone shall believe in him; and then the Romans shall come, and shall destroy our Temple, and our nation.)

⁴⁹ But one of them, Caiaphas by name, when he was bishop of that year (or who was the High Priest that year), said to them, Ye know nothing,

⁶ Therfor whanne Jhesus herde, that he was sijk, thanne he dwellide in the same place twei daies.

⁷ And after these thingis he seide to hise disciplis, Go we eft in to Judee.

⁸ The disciplis seien to hym, Maister, now the Jewis souyten for to stoone thee, and eft goist thou thidir?

⁹ Jhesus answerde, Whether ther ben not twelue ouris of the dai? If ony man wandre in the dai, he hirtith not, for he seeth the liyt of this world.

¹⁰ But if he wandre in the niyt, he stomblith, for liyt is not in him.

¹¹ He seith these thingis, and aftir these thingis he seith to hem, Lazarus, oure freend, slepith, but Y go to reise hym fro sleep.

¹² Therfor hise disciplis seiden, Lord, if he slepith, he schal be saaf.

¹³ But Jhesus hadde seid of his deth; but thei gessiden, that he seide of slepyng of sleep.

¹⁴ Thanne therfor Jhesus seide to hem opynli, Lazarus is deed;

¹⁵ and Y haue ioye for you, that ye bileue, for Y was not there; but go we to hym.

¹⁶ Therfor Thomas, that is seid Didymus, seide to euen disciplis, Go we also, that we dien with hym.

¹⁷ And so Jhesus cam, and foond hym hauynge thanne foure daies in the graue.

¹⁸ And Bethany was bisidis Jerusalem, as it were fiftene furlongis.

¹⁹ And many of the Jewis camen to Mary and Martha, to coumforte hem of her brothir.

²⁰ Therfor as Martha herde, that Jhesu cam, sche ran to hym; but Mary sat at home.

²¹ Therfor Martha seide to Jhesu, Lord, if thou haddist be here, my brother hadde not be deed.

²² But now Y woot, that what euere thingis thou schalt axe of God, God schal yyue to thee.

²³ Jhesus seith to hir, Thi brother schal rise ayen.

²⁴ Martha seith to hym, Y woot, that he schal rise ayen in the ayen risyng in the laste dai.

²⁵ Jhesus seith to hir, Y am ayen risyng and lijf; he that bileueth in me, yhe, thouy he be deed,

²⁶ he schal lyue; and ech that lyueth, and bileueth in me, schal not die with outen ende. Bileuest thou this thing?

²⁷ Sche seith to hym, Yhe, Lord, Y haue bileued, that thou art Crist, the sone of the lyuynge God, that hast come in to this world.

²⁸ And whanne sche hadde seid this thing, sche wente, and clepide Marie, hir sistir, in silence, and seide, The maister cometh, and clepith thee.

²⁹ Sche, as sche herd, aroos anoon, and cam to hym.

³⁰ And Jhesus cam not yit `in to the castel, but he was yit in that place, where Martha hadde comun ayens hym.

³¹ Therfor the Jewis that weren with hir in the hous, and coumfortiden hir, whanne thei sayn Marie, that sche roos swithe, and wente out, thei sueden hir, and seiden, For sche goith to the graue, to wepe there.

³² But whanne Marie was comun where Jhesus was, sche seynge hym felde doun to his feet, and seide to hym, Lord, if thou haddist be here, my brother hadde not be deed.

³³ And therfor whanne Jhesu saiy hir wepyng, and the Jewis wepynge that weren with hir, he `made noise in spirit, and troblide hym silf,

³⁴ and seide, Where han ye leid hym? Thei seien to hym, Lord, come, and se.

³⁵ And Jhesus wepte.

³⁶ Therfor the Jewis seiden, Lo! hou he louede hym.

³⁷ And summe of hem seiden, Whethir this man that openyde the iyen of the borun blynde man, myyte not make that this schulde not die?

³⁸ Therfor Jhesus eft makynge noise in hym silf, cam to the graue. And there was a denne, and a stoon was leid theronne.

³⁹ And Jhesus seith, Take ye awey the stoon. Martha, the sistir of hym that was deed, seith to hym, Lord, he stynkith now, for he hath leye foure daies.

⁴⁰ Jhesus seith to hir, Haue Y not seid to thee, that if thou bileuest, thou schalt se the glorie of God?

⁴¹ Therfor thei token awei the stoon. And Jhesus lifte vp hise iyen, and seide, Fadir, Y do thankyngis to thee, for thou hast herd me; and Y wiste,

⁴² that thou euermore herist me, but for the puple that stondith aboute, Y seide, that thei bileue, that thou hast sent me.

⁴³ Whanne he hadde seid these thingis, he criede with a greet vois, Lazarus, come thou forth.

⁴⁴ And anoon he that was deed, cam out, boundun the hondis and feet with boondis, and his face boundun with a sudarie. And Jhesus seith to hem, Vnbynde ye hym, and suffre ye hym to go forth.

⁴⁵ Therfor many of the Jewis that camen to Marie and Martha, and seyn what thingis Jhesus dide, bileueden in hym.

⁴⁶ But summe of hem wente to the Farisees, and seiden to hem, what thingis Jhesus `hadde don.

⁴⁷ Therfor the bischopis and the Farisees gadriden a counsel ayens Jhesu, and seiden, What do we? for this man doith many myraclis.

⁴⁸ If we leeue hym thus, alle men schulen bileue in hym; and Romayns schulen come, and schulen take our place and oure folk.

⁴⁹ But oon of hem, Cayfas bi name, whanne he was bischop of that yeer, seide to hem,

⁶ when, therefore, he heard that he is ailing, then indeed he remained in the place in which he was two days,

⁷ then after this, he saith to the disciples, 'We may go to Judea again;'

⁸ the disciples say to him, 'Rabbi, now were the Jews seeking to stone thee, and again thou dost go thither!'

⁹ Jesus answered, 'Are there not twelve hours in the day? if any one may walk in the day, he doth not stumble, because the light of this world he doth see;

¹⁰ and if any one may walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.'

¹¹ These things he said, and after this he saith to them, 'Lazarus our friend hath fallen asleep, but I go on that I may awake him;'

¹² therefore said his disciples, 'Sir, if he hath fallen asleep, he will be saved;'

¹³ but Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that about the repose of sleep he speaketh.

¹⁴ Then, therefore, Jesus said to them freely, 'Lazarus hath died;

¹⁵ and I rejoice, for your sake, (that ye may believe,) that I was not there; but we may go to him;'

¹⁶ therefore said Thomas, who is called Didymus, to the fellow-disciples, 'We may go — we also, that we may die with him,'

¹⁷ Jesus, therefore, having come, found him having been four days already in the tomb.

¹⁸ And Bethany was nigh to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off,

¹⁹ and many of the Jews had come unto Martha and Mary, that they might comfort them concerning their brother;

²⁰ Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus doth come, met him, and Mary kept sitting in the house.

²¹ Martha, therefore, said unto Jesus, 'Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;

²² but even now, I have known that whatever thou mayest ask of God, God will give to thee;'

²³ Jesus saith to her, 'Thy brother shall rise again.'

²⁴ Martha saith to him, 'I have known that he will rise again, in the rising again in the last day;'

²⁵ Jesus said to her, 'I am the rising again, and the life; he who is believing in me, even if he may die, shall live;

²⁶ and every one who is living and believing in me shall not die — to the age;

²⁷ believest thou this?' she saith to him, 'Yes, sir, I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming to the world.'

²⁸ And these things having said, she went away, and called Mary her sister privately, saying, 'The Teacher is present, and doth call thee;'

²⁹ she, when she heard, riseth up quickly, and doth come to him;

³⁰ and Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was in the place where Martha met him;

³¹ the Jews, therefore, who were with her in the house, and were comforting her, having seen Mary that she rose up quickly and went forth, followed her, saying — 'She doth go away to the tomb, that she may weep there.'

³² Mary, therefore, when she came where Jesus was, having seen him, fell at his feet, saying to him, 'Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;'

³³ Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, did groan in the spirit, and troubled himself, and he said,

³⁴ 'Where have ye laid him?' they say to him, 'Sir, come and see;'

³⁵ Jesus wept.

³⁶ The Jews, therefore, said, 'Lo, how he was loving him!'

³⁷ and certain of them said, 'Was not this one, who did open the eyes of the blind man, able to cause that also this one might not have died?'

³⁸ Jesus, therefore, again groaning in himself, cometh to the tomb, and it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it,

³⁹ Jesus saith, 'Take ye away the stone;' the sister of him who hath died — Martha — saith to him, 'Sir, already he stinketh, for he is four days dead;'

⁴⁰ Jesus saith to her, 'Said I not to thee, that if thou mayest believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?'

⁴¹ They took away, therefore, the stone where the dead was laid, and Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, 'Father, I thank Thee, that Thou didst hear me;

⁴² and I knew that Thou always dost hear me, but, because of the multitude that is standing by, I said it, that they may believe that Thou didst send me.'

⁴³ And these things saying, with a loud voice he cried out, 'Lazarus, come forth;'

⁴⁴ and he who died came forth, being bound feet and hands with grave-clothes, and his visage with a napkin was bound about; Jesus saith to them, 'Loose him, and suffer to go.'

⁴⁵ Many, therefore, of the Jews who came unto Mary, and beheld what Jesus did, believed in him;

⁴⁶ but certain of them went away unto the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus did;

⁴⁷ the chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered together a sanhedrim, and said, 'What may we do? because this man doth many signs?

⁴⁸ if we may let him alone thus, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and will take away both our place and nation.'

⁴⁹ and a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being chief priest of that year, said to them, 'Ye have not known anything,
