John 10:18-40 in English

¹⁸ No one taketh it away from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment received I from my Father.

¹⁹ There arose a division again among the Jews because of these words.

²⁰ And many of them said, He hath a demon, and is mad; why hear ye him?

²¹ Others said, These are not the sayings of one possessed with a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?

²² And it was the feast of the dedication at Jerusalem:

²³ it was winter; and Jesus was walking in the temple in Solomon’s porch.

²⁴ The Jews therefore came round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou hold us in suspense? If thou art the Christ, tell us plainly.

²⁵ Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believe not: the works that I do in my Father’s name, these bear witness of me.

²⁶ But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep.

²⁷ My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

²⁸ and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, and no one shall snatch them out of my hand.

²⁹ My Father, who hath given them unto me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.

³⁰ I and the Father are one.

³¹ The Jews took up stones again to stone him.

³² Jesus answered them, Many good works have I showed you from the Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?

³³ The Jews answered him, For a good work we stone thee not, but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.

³⁴ Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?

³⁵ If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came (and the scripture cannot be broken),

³⁶ say ye of him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?

³⁷ If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.

³⁸ But if I do them, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.

³⁹ They sought again to take him: and he went forth out of their hand.

⁴⁰ And he went away again beyond the Jordan into the place where John was at the first baptizing; and there he abode.

¹⁸ No one takes it away from me, but I lay it down of my own free will. I have the authority to lay it down, and I have the authority to take it up again. I received this commandment from my Father.”

¹⁹ The Jews were divided again, because of these words.

²⁰ Many of them were saying, “He has a demon and is insane. Why do you listen to Him?”

²¹ Others were saying, “These aren’t the sayings of a demon-possessed person. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

²² At that time the Feast of Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter,

²³ and Jesus was walking in the temple, in Solomon’s porch.

²⁴ Then the Jews gathered around Him, and asked Him, “How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

²⁵ Jesus answered, “I told you, but you don’t believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify about me,

²⁶ but you don’t believe, because you aren’t of my sheep.

²⁷ My sheep listen to my voice. I know them, and they follow me.

²⁸ I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one is able to snatch them out of my hand.

²⁹ My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of my Father’s hand.

³⁰ I and my Father are one.”

³¹ Therefore the Jews took up stones again to stone Him.

³² Jesus answered, “I showed you many good works from the Father. For which of them are you stoning me?”

³³ The Jews answered Him, “We aren’t stoning you for a good work, but for blasphemy, because You, being a man, claim to be God.”

³⁴ Jesus answered, “Isn’t it written in your Law, ‘I said, “You are gods”’?

³⁵ If he, who God’s word came to, called them gods, (and the Scripture can’t be broken),

³⁶ do you say of Him who the Father set apart and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?

³⁷ If I don’t do my Father’s works, then don’t believe me.

³⁸ But if I do them, even if you don’t believe me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I am in the Father.”

³⁹ Therefore they were trying again to seize Him, and He escaped from their grasp.

⁴⁰ Jesus went away again across the Jordan to the place where John was first baptizing, and He was staying there.

¹⁸ No one is causing me to die. Instead, I have chosen to sacrifice myself. I have authority to sacrifice myself and I have authority to become alive again. That is what my Father has commanded me to do.”

¹⁹ After hearing these words that Jesus said, the Jews were divided again.

²⁰ Many of them said, “A demon is controlling him and has caused him to become crazy. ◄It is useless to listen to him!/Why should we listen to him?► RHQ”

²¹ But others said, “What he is saying is not something a man whom a demon is controlling would say. ◄No demon could enable a blind man to see like he did!/ How could a demon enable a blind man to see like he did?► RHQ”

²² Then it was time for the celebration to remember when our ancestors rededicated the Temple in Jerusalem. It was in winter.

²³ Jesus was in the Temple courtyard, walking in the place that people called King Solomon's porch.

²⁴ The Jewish leaders SYN gathered around him and said, “How long will you keep us from knowing for sure if you are the Messiah? If you are the Messiah, tell us clearly!”

²⁵ Jesus answered them, “I have told you that I am the Messiah, but you do not believe me! You should know who I am because of the miracles I do with my Father's authority MTY.

²⁶ But instead, you do not believe in me because you do not belong to me. You are like MET sheep who belong to a different shepherd.

²⁷ Just like sheep heed the voice of their true shepherd MET, my people pay attention to what I say. I know them, and they have become my disciples.

²⁸ I will give them eternal life. No one will separate them from me, not ever. No one shall ever pull them away from belonging to me.

²⁹ Those that my Father has given to me are more precious than anything else (OR, My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than anything that opposes them). So no one can pull them away from belonging to him MTY.

³⁰ My father and I are equal.”

³¹ The Jewish leaders SYN again picked up stones to throw at Jesus and kill him because they were angry at his saying that he was equal with God.

³² But Jesus said to them, “You have seen me perform many miracles that my Father told me to do. You should realize from seeing them that I am equal with God. So, because of which of these miracles IRO are you wanting to kill me by throwing stones at me?”

³³ The Jewish leaders SYN replied, “We are wanting to throw stones at you not because you performed a great miracle. Instead, we are wanting to do it because you are dishonoring God. You are just a man, but you are saying that you are God!”

³⁴ Jesus replied to them, “In the Scriptures it is written {◄ someone/the Psalmist► has written} RHQ what God said to the rulers whom he had appointed, ‘I have said that you are like gods.’

³⁵ God said that to those leaders when he appointed them. No one objected to that. And nothing that is in Scripture can be set aside {no one can set aside anything that is in Scripture}.

³⁶ But I am the one my Father set apart to completely belong to him. He sent me here into this world. So ◄why are you angry with me for saying that I am equal with God when I say that I am the man who is also God?/you should not be angry with me for saying that I am equal with God when I say that I am the person who is both God and man!► RHQ

³⁷ If I were not doing the miracles that my Father told me to do, I would not expect you to believe in me.

³⁸ But because I perform these miracles, believe what these miracles show about me, even though you do not believe what I say. If you do that, then you will know and understand that my Father has a close relationship with me, and I have a close relationship with my Father.”

³⁹ After they heard that, they tried to seize him again, but he got away from them.

⁴⁰ Then Jesus went, along with us, back across to the east side of the Jordan River. We went to the place where John was previously baptizing people. He/We stayed there for a few weeks.

²⁰ And a number of them said, He has an evil spirit and is out of his mind; why do you give ear to him?

²¹ Others said, These are not the words of one who has an evil spirit. Is it possible for an evil spirit to make blind people see?

²² Then came the feast of the opening of the Temple in Jerusalem: it was winter;

²³ And Jesus was walking in the Temple, in Solomon's covered way.

²⁴ Then the Jews came round him, saying, how long are you going to keep us in doubt? If you are the Christ, say so clearly.

²⁵ Jesus said in answer, I have said it and you have no belief: the works which I do in my Father's name, these give witness about me.

²⁶ But you have no belief because you are not of my sheep.

²⁷ My sheep give ear to my voice, and I have knowledge of them, and they come after me:

²⁸ And I give them eternal life; they will never come to destruction, and no one will ever take them out of my hand.

²⁹ That which my Father has given to me has more value than all; and no one is able to take anything out of the Father's hand.

³⁰ I and my Father are one.

³¹ Then the Jews took up stones again to send at him.

³² Jesus said to them in answer, I have let you see a number of good works from the Father; for which of those works are you stoning me?

³³ This was their answer: We are not stoning you for a good work but for evil words; because being a man you make yourself God.

³⁴ In answer, Jesus said, Is there not a saying in your law, I said, You are gods?

³⁵ If he said they were gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Writings may not be broken),

³⁶ Do you say of him whom the Father made holy and sent into the world, Your words are evil; because I said, I am God's Son?

³⁷ If I am not doing the works of my Father, do not have belief in me;

³⁸ But if I am doing them, then have belief in the works even if you have no belief in me; so that you may see clearly and be certain that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.

³⁹ Then again they made an attempt to take him; but he got away from them.

⁴⁰ And he went again to the other side of the Jordan, to the place where John first gave baptism; and he was there for a time.

²⁰ but many of them said, He has a demon and raves; why do ye hear him?

²¹ Others said, These sayings are not those of one that is possessed by a demon. Can a demon open blind people's eyes?

²² Now the feast of the dedication was celebrating at Jerusalem, and it was winter.

²³ And Jesus walked in the temple in the porch of Solomon.

²⁴ The Jews therefore surrounded him, and said to him, Until when dost thou hold our soul in suspense? If thou art the Christ, say so to us openly.

²⁵ Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye do not believe. The works which I do in my Father's name, these bear witness concerning me:

²⁶ but ye do not believe, for ye are not of my sheep, as I told you.

²⁷ My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me;

²⁸ and I give them life eternal; and they shall never perish, and no one shall seize them out of my hand.

³⁵ If He called those gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),

³⁶ do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?

³⁷ If I am not doing the works of My Father, do not believe Me;

³⁸ but if I am doing them, even if you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.”

³⁹ Therefore they were seeking again to seize Him, but He escaped from their hand.

⁴⁰ And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was first baptizing, and He stayed there.

¹⁸ No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This command I have received from my Father.”

¹⁹ Therefore there was another division among the Jews because of these words.

²⁰ Many of them were saying: “He has a demon and is raving mad. Why do you listen to him?”

²¹ Others were saying: “These are not the sayings of someone who is demonized. A demon cannot open blind people's eyes, can it?”

²² Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem; and it was winter.

²³ And Jesus was walking about in the temple, in Solomon's porch.

²⁴ Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him: “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

²⁵ Jesus answered them: “I did tell you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name—these testify concerning me.

²⁶ But you do not believe because you are not among my sheep, just like I told you.

²⁷ My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

²⁸ And I give them eternal life, and they will never ever be wasted; and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

²⁹ My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch out of my Father's hand.

³⁰ I and the Father are one.”

³¹ Therefore the Jews picked up stones again to stone Him.

³² Jesus answered them: “Many good works I have shown you from my Father. For which one of them are you stoning me?”

³³ The Jews answered Him saying, “It is not for a good work that we are stoning you, but for blasphemy; precisely because you, being a man, make yourself God!”

³⁴ Jesus answered them: “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, you are gods’?

¹⁹ The Jews were again divided in their opinion about Jesus over these words.

²⁰ Many of them said, “He's demon-possessed! He's mad! Why are you listening to him?”

²¹ Others said, “These aren't the words of someone who's demon-possessed. Besides, a demon can't open eyes that are blind.”

²² It was winter, and the time of the Festival of Dedication in Jerusalem.

²³ Jesus was walking in the Temple through Solomon's porch. The Jews surrounded him, asking,

²⁴ “How long are you going to keep us hanging in suspense? If you are the Messiah then tell us plainly!”

²⁵ Jesus replied, “I already told you but you refuse to believe it. The miracles I do in my Father's name prove who I am.

²⁶ You don't believe me because you are not my sheep.

²⁷ My sheep recognize my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

²⁸ I give them eternal life; they shall never be lost, and no one can snatch them from me.

²⁹ My Father who gave them to me is greater than anyone else; no one can snatch them from him.

³⁰ I and the Father are one.”

³¹ Once again the Jews picked up stones to stone him.

³³ The Jews replied, “We're not stoning you for a good deed, but for blasphemy because you are just a man but you're claiming to be God.”

³⁴ Jesus answered them, “Isn't it written in your law, ‘I said, you are gods’?

³⁶ So why are you saying the one whom the Father set apart and sent into the world is blaspheming because I said ‘I am the Son of God’?

³⁷ If I'm not doing what my Father does, then don't believe me.

³⁸ But if that is what I'm doing, even though you don't believe me, you should believe because of the evidence of what I've done. That way you can know and understand that the Father is in me, and I am in the Father.”

³⁹ Once again they tried to arrest him, but he escaped from them.

⁴⁰ He went back across the Jordan River to the place where John had begun baptizing, and he stayed there.

¹⁸ No man taketh it from me, but I lay it downe of my selfe: I haue power to lay it downe, and haue power to take it againe: this commandement haue I receiued of my Father.

²⁵ “I have told you so,” replied Jesus, “and you do not believe me. The work that I am doing in my Father's name bears testimony to me.

²⁶ But you do not believe me, because you are not of my flock.

²⁷ My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me;

²⁸ and I give them eternal life, and they will not be lost; nor will anyone snatch them out of my hands.

³² and seeing this, Jesus said, “I have done before your eyes many good actions, inspired by the Father; for which of them would you stone me?”

³³ “It is not for any good action that we would stone you,” they answered, “but for blasphemy; and because you, who are only a man, make yourself out to be God.”

³⁴ “Are there not,” replied Jesus, “these words in your Law — ‘I said, You are gods’?

³⁵ If those to whom God's word were addressed were said to be ‘gods’ — and scripture cannot be set aside —

³⁶ do you say of one whom the Father has consecrated and sent as his messenger to the world ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said ‘I am God's Son’?

³⁷ If I am not doing the work that my Father is doing, do not believe me;

³⁸ if I am doing it, even though you do not believe me, believe what that work shows; so that you may understand, and understand more and more clearly, that the Father is in union with me, and I with the Father.”

²⁴ The Jews Praisers therefore came around him and said to him, “How long will you hold us in suspense? If you are the Messiah Anointed one, tell us plainly.”

²⁵ Yeshua Salvation answered them, “I told you, and you don’t believe. The works that I do in 'Avi ·my Father·’s name, these testify about me.

¹⁹ And ther was a dissencion agayne amonge the Iewes for these sayinges

²⁰ and many of them sayd. He hath the devyll and is mad: why heare ye him?

²¹ Other sayde these are not the wordes of him that hath the devyll. Can the devyll open the eyes of the blynde?

²⁹ My father which gave the me is greatter then all and no man is able to take them out of my fathers honde.

³⁰ And I and my father are one.

³¹ Then the Iewes agayne toke up stones to stone him with all.

³² Iesus answered them: many good workes have I shewed you from my father: for which of them will ye stone me?

³³ The Iewes answered him sayinge. For thy good workes sake we stone ye not: but for thy blasphemy and because that thou beinge a man makest thy selfe God.

³⁴ Iesus answered them: Is it not written in youre lawe: I saye ye are goddes?

³⁸ But if I do though ye beleve not me yet beleve the workes that ye maye knowe and beleve that the father is in me and I in him.

³⁹ Agayne they went aboute to take him: but he escaped out of their hondes

²⁵ Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you don’t believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name, these testify about me.

²⁶ But you don’t believe, because you are not of my sheep, as I told you.

²⁷ My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

²⁸ I give eternal life to them. They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

²⁹ My Father who has given them to me is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of my Father’s hand.

³⁰ I and the Father are one.”

³¹ Therefore the Jews took up stones again to stone him.

³² Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from my Father. For which of those works do you stone me?”

³³ The Jews answered him, “We don’t stone you for a good work, but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God.”

³⁴ Jesus answered them, “Isn’t it written in your law, ‘I said, you are gods?’

³⁵ If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture can’t be broken),

³⁶ do you say of him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You blaspheme,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God?’

³⁷ If I don’t do the works of my Father, don’t believe me.

³⁸ But if I do them, though you don’t believe me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”

³⁹ They sought again to seize him, and he went out of their hand.

⁴⁰ He went away again beyond the Jordan into the place where John was baptising at first, and he stayed there.

¹⁸ No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received from my Father.

¹⁹ There was a division therefore again among the Jews for these sayings.

²⁰ And many of them said, He hath a demon, and is insane; why hear ye him?

²¹ Others said, These are not the words of him that hath a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?

²² And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.

²³ And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch.

²⁴ Then came the Jews around him, and said to him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou art the Christ, tell us plainly.

²⁵ Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I did in my Father's name, they testify concerning me.

²⁶ But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said to you.

²⁴ The Judeans therefore came around him and said to him, “How long will you hold us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”

²¹ Othere men seiden, These wordis ben not of a man that hath a feend. Whether the deuel may opene the iyen of blynde men?

²² But the feestis of halewyng of the temple weren maad in Jerusalem, and it was wyntir.

²³ And Jhesus walkide in the temple, in the porche of Salomon.

²⁴ Therfor the Jewis camen aboute hym, and seiden to hym, Hou long takist thou awei oure soule? if thou art Crist, seie thou to vs opynli.

²⁵ Jhesus answerde to hem, Y speke to you, and ye bileuen not; the werkis that Y do in the name of my fadir, beren witnessyng of me.

²⁶ But ye bileuen not, for ye ben not of my scheep.

²⁷ My scheep heren my vois, and Y knowe hem, and thei suen me.

²⁸ And Y yyue to hem euerelastynge lijf, and thei schulen not perische with outen ende, and noon schal rauysche hem fro myn hoond.

²⁹ That thing that my fadir yaf to me, is more than alle thingis; and no man may rauysche fro my fadris hoond.

³⁶ thilke that the fadir hath halewid, and hath sent in to the world, ye seien, That `thou blasfemest, for Y seide, Y am Goddis sone?

³⁷ Yf Y do not the werkis of my fadir, nyle ye bileue to me;

³⁸ but if Y do, thouy ye wolen not bileue to me, bileue ye to the werkis; that ye knowe and bileue, that the fadir is in me, and Y in the fadir.

³⁹ Therfor thei souyten to take hym, and he wente out of her hondis.

⁴⁰ And he wente eftsoone ouer Jordan, in to that place where Joon was firste baptisynge, and he dwelte there.

²⁷ according as I said to you: My sheep my voice do hear, and I know them, and they follow me,

²⁸ and life age-during I give to them, and they shall not perish — to the age, and no one shall pluck them out of my hand;

²⁹ my Father, who hath given to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to pluck out of the hand of my Father;

³⁰ I and the Father are one.'

³¹ Therefore, again, did the Jews take up stones that they may stone him;

³² Jesus answered them, 'Many good works did I shew you from my Father; because of which work of them do ye stone me?'

³³ The Jews answered him, saying, 'For a good work we do not stone thee, but for evil speaking, and because thou, being a man, dost make thyself God.'

³⁴ Jesus answered them, 'Is it not having been written in your law: I said, ye are gods?

³⁵ if them he did call gods unto whom the word of God came, (and the Writing is not able to be broken,)

³⁶ of him whom the Father did sanctify, and send to the world, do ye say — Thou speakest evil, because I said, Son of God I am?

³⁷ if I do not the works of my Father, do not believe me;

³⁸ and if I do, even if me ye may not believe, the works believe, that ye may know and may believe that in me is the Father, and I in Him.'

³⁹ Therefore were they seeking again to seize him, and he went forth out of their hand,
