John 10:1-16 in English

¹ Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

² But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

³ To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.

⁴ When he hath put forth all his own, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.

⁵ And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.

⁶ This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.

⁷ Jesus therefore said unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.

⁸ All that came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.

⁹ I am the door; by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and go out, and shall find pasture.

¹⁰ The thief cometh not, but that he may steal, and kill, and destroy: I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.

¹¹ I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd layeth down his life for the sheep.

¹² He that is a hireling, and not a shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, beholdeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth, and the wolf snatcheth them, and scattereth them:

¹³ he fleeth because he is a hireling, and careth not for the sheep.

¹⁴ I am the good shepherd; and I know mine own, and mine own know me,

¹⁵ even as the Father knoweth me, and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.

¹⁶ And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and they shall become one flock, one shepherd.

¹ “Most assuredly, I tell you, whoever doesn’t enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs in some other way, is a thief and a robber.

² The one who enters by the gate is the sheep’s shepherd.

³ The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

⁴ When he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice.

⁵ There is no way that they will follow a stranger, but will run away from the stranger, because they don’t know the voice of strangers.”

⁶ Jesus used this illustration, but the Pharisees didn’t understand what He was telling them.

⁷ Then Jesus told them again, “Most assuredly, I tell you, I am the sheep’s door.

⁸ All who ever came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn’t listen to them.

⁹ I am the door. Anyone who enters by me will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.

¹⁰ The thief comes only to steal, and kill, and destroy. I came that they might have life, and that they might have it in all its fullness.

¹¹ I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.

¹² The hired hand, who isn’t the shepherd and doesn’t own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away. So, the wolf snatches them and scatters them.

¹³ The hired hand is concerned about the wages, and not the sheep, so the hired hand runs away.

¹⁴ I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me,

¹⁵ just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. I lay down my life for the sheep.

¹⁶ I have other sheep that don’t belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So, there will be one flock, with one shepherd.

¹³ The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.

¹⁴ I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.

¹⁵ As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.

¹⁶ And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

¹ Jesus continued by saying to us, “Listen carefully to what I say. Anyone who does not enter the sheep pen through the gate, if he climbs in some other way, he is a thief or a bandit.

² The man who enters the pen through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.

³ The man who watches the gate at night opens the gate for him. The sheep recognize the shepherd's voice. He summons his own sheep by calling out the names he has given them. Then he leads them outside the pen.

⁴ After he has brought out all his own sheep, he goes in front of them. His sheep follow him because they recognize and pay attention to his voice.

⁵ But they will never follow a stranger. Instead, they will run away from him, because they do not recognize a stranger's voice.”

⁶ Jesus said that MET to illustrate the difference between himself and the Pharisees, who were deceiving the people. But they did not understand what he was telling them.

⁷ So Jesus spoke to them again. He said, “Listen carefully to what I am saying. I am like MET a gate for the sheep to enter the sheepfold, because I am the one who allows people to enter God's presence.

⁸ All of your religious leaders who have come previously without my authority are like MET thieves and bandits because they act violently and dishonestly for their own benefit. But just like sheep do not obey strangers, God's people do not pay attention to them.

⁹ I am like a gate. Those will be saved { God will save all those} who come to God by trusting in me. Just like sheep go in and out through the gate safely to find pasture MET, I will provide for them and protect them.

¹⁰ Thieves come to a sheep pen only to steal or kill or destroy sheep MET. Similarly, your religious leaders injure God's people spiritually. But I have come in order that people may have eternal/spiritual life, and that they may have abundantly all they need to sustain them spiritually.

¹¹ I am like a good shepherd. A good shepherd is willing to die to save the sheep MET. Similarly, I am ready to sacrifice myself to save those who belong to me.

¹² A worker whom someone has hired to look after the sheep is not like the shepherd or the one who owns the sheep. So when he sees a wolf coming, he leaves the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock of sheep and seizes one sheep and causes the others to scatter.

¹³ The worker runs away because he is only a man whom someone has hired. He is not really concerned about what happens to the sheep MET. Similarly, your religious teachers do not really care what happens to you.

¹⁴ I am like a good shepherd. Just like a good shepherd knows his sheep MET, I know those who belong to me, and they know me

¹⁵ in the same way as my Father knows me and I know my Father. Furthermore, I am ready to sacrifice myself for those who belong to me.

¹⁶ And I have other people who are not Jews who will some day belong to me. They will be like MET sheep from another sheep pen. I must bring them to God/myself also. They will pay attention to what I say, and eventually all those who belong to me will be like one flock, and I will be like MET their one shepherd.

¹ Truly I say to you, He who does not go through the door into the place where the sheep are kept, but gets in by some other way, is a thief and an outlaw.

² He who goes in by the door is the keeper of the sheep.

³ The porter lets him in; and the sheep give ear to his voice; he says over the names of the sheep, and takes them out.

⁴ When he has got them all out, he goes before them, and the sheep go after him, for they have knowledge of his voice.

⁵ They will not go after another who is not their keeper, but will go from him in flight, because his voice is strange to them.

⁶ In this Jesus was teaching them in the form of a story: but what he said was not clear to them.

⁷ So Jesus said again, Truly I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.

⁸ All who came before me are thieves and outlaws: but the sheep did not give ear to them.

⁹ I am the door: if any man goes in through me he will have salvation, and will go in and go out, and will get food.

¹⁰ The thief comes only to take the sheep and to put them to death: he comes for their destruction: I have come so that they may have life and have it in greater measure.

¹¹ I am the good keeper of sheep: the good keeper gives his life for the sheep.

¹² He who is a servant, and not the keeper or the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming and goes in flight, away from the sheep; and the wolf comes down on them and sends them in all directions:

¹³ Because he is a servant he has no interest in the sheep.

¹⁴ I am the good keeper; I have knowledge of my sheep, and they have knowledge of me,

¹⁵ Even as the Father has knowledge of me and I of the Father; and I am giving my life for the sheep.

¹⁶ And I have other sheep which are not of this field: I will be their guide in the same way, and they will give ear to my voice, so there will be one flock and one keeper.

¹ Verily, verily, I say to you, He that enters not in by the door to the fold of the sheep, but mounts up elsewhere, he is a thief and a robber;

² but he that enters in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

³ To him the porter opens; and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name, and leads them out.

¹² But the hired man, not being the shepherd and not owning the sheep, sees the wolf coming and abandons the sheep, and runs away; and the wolf snatches the sheep and scatters them.

¹³ Now the hired man runs away because he is a hired man and it does not matter to him about the sheep.

¹⁴ “I am the good shepherd, and I know my own sheep, and I am known by them.

¹⁵ Just as the Father knows me, I also know the Father, and I lay down my life on behalf of the sheep.

¹⁶ I also have other sheep, that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice; and there will be one flock, one shepherd.

¹ “I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn't come in through the gate of the sheepfold but climbs in some other way is a thief and a robber.

² The one who comes in through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.

³ The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep respond to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name, and leads them out.

⁴ After bringing them out, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they recognize his voice.

⁵ They won't follow strangers. In fact they run away from a stranger because they don't recognize the voice of strangers.”

⁶ When Jesus gave this illustration those who were listening to him didn't understand what he meant.

⁷ So Jesus explained again, “I tell you the truth: I am the gate of the sheepfold.

⁸ All those who came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn't listen to them.

⁹ I am the gate. Anyone who comes in through me will be healed. They will be able to come and go, and find the food they need.

¹⁰ The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. I've come to bring you life, life full to overflowing.

¹¹ I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

¹² The man paid to look after the sheep is not the shepherd and he runs away when he sees the wolf coming. He abandons the sheep because they're not his, and the wolf attacks and scatters the flock

¹³ for the man is only working for pay and doesn't care about the sheep.

¹⁴ I am the good shepherd. I know who are mine, and they know me,

¹⁵ just as the Father knows me and I know him. I lay down my life for the sheep.

¹⁶ I have other sheep that are not in this sheepfold. I must bring them too. They will listen to my voice and there will be one flock with one shepherd.

² But he that goeth in by the doore, is the shepheard of the sheepe.

⁴ And when hee hath sent foorth his owne sheepe, he goeth before them, and the sheepe follow him: for they know his voyce.

⁵ And they will not follow a stranger, but they flee from him: for they know not the voyce of strangers.

⁶ This parable spake Iesus vnto them: but they vnderstoode not what things they were which he spake vnto them.

⁷ Then sayd Iesus vnto them againe, Verely, verely I say vnto you, I am that doore of the sheepe.

⁸ All, that euer came before me, are theeues and robbers: but the sheepe did not heare them.

⁹ I am that doore: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saued, and shall go in, and go out, and finde pasture.

¹⁰ The theefe commeth not, but for to steale, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might haue life, and haue it in abundance.

¹¹ I am that good shepheard: that good shepheard giueth his life for his sheepe.

¹² But an hireling, and hee which is not the shepheard, neither the sheepe are his owne, seeth the wolfe comming, and hee leaueth the sheepe, and fleeth, and the wolfe catcheth them, and scattreth the sheepe.

¹³ So the hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheepe.

¹⁴ I am that good shepheard, and knowe mine, and am knowen of mine.

¹⁵ As the Father knoweth me, so know I the Father: and I lay downe my life for my sheepe.

¹⁶ Other sheepe I haue also, which are not of this folde: them also must I bring, and they shall heare my voyce: and there shalbe one sheepefolde, and one shepheard.

¹ Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

² and he who is entering through the door is shepherd of the sheep;

³ to this one the doorkeeper doth open, and the sheep hear his voice, and his own sheep he doth call by name, and doth lead them forth;

⁴ and when his own sheep he may put forth, before them he goeth on, and the sheep follow him, because they have known his voice;

⁵ and a stranger they will not follow, but will flee from him, because they have not known the voice of strangers.'

⁶ This similitude spake Jesus to them, and they knew not what the things were that he was speaking to them;

⁷ Jesus said therefore again to them, 'Verily, verily, I say to you — I am the door of the sheep;

⁸ all, as many as came before me, are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them;

⁹ I am the door, through me if any one may come in, he shall be saved, and he shall come in, and go out, and find pasture.

¹⁰ 'The thief doth not come, except that he may steal, and kill, and destroy; I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.

¹¹ 'I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd his life layeth down for the sheep;

¹² and the hireling, and not being a shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, doth behold the wolf coming, and doth leave the sheep, and doth flee; and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep;

¹³ and the hireling doth flee because he is an hireling, and is not caring for the sheep.

¹⁴ 'I am the good shepherd, and I know my sheep, and am known by mine,

¹⁵ according as the Father doth know me, and I know the Father, and my life I lay down for the sheep,

¹⁶ and other sheep I have that are not of this fold, these also it behoveth me to bring, and my voice they will hear, and there shall become one flock — one shepherd.
