Ecclesiastes 1:17-18 in English

¹⁷ And I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also was a striving after wind.

¹⁸ For in much wisdom is much grief; and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

¹⁷ And my heart knew much—wisdom, and knowledge, parables and understanding: I perceived that this also is waywardness of spirit.

¹⁸ For in the abundance of wisdom is abundance of knowledge; and he that increases knowledge will increase sorrow.

¹⁷ And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

¹⁷ So I determined to learn more about being wise and to learn about knowing about many things, and also to learn about doing things that are very foolish DOU. But I found out that trying to understand those things was also useless, like chasing the wind.

¹⁸ The wiser I became, the more disappointed I became. The more things I knew about, the sadder I became.

¹⁷ And my heart knew much—wisdom, and knowledge, parables and understanding: I perceived that this also is waywardness of spirit.

¹⁸ For in the abundance of wisdom is abundance of knowledge; and he that increases knowledge will increase sorrow.

¹⁸ Because In much wisdom there is much indignation: and he that addeth knowledge, addeth also labour.

¹⁷ So I decided to use my mind to learn everything about wisdom, and madness and foolishness as well. But I found out that this is as hard as trying to catch hold of the wind.

¹⁸ For with great wisdom comes great frustration. The greater the knowledge, the greater the pain.

¹⁷ And I gaue mine heart to knowe wisdome and knowledge, madnes and foolishnes: I knew also that this is a vexation of the spirit.

¹⁸ For in the multitude of wisedome is much griefe: and he that increaseth knowledge, increaseth sorowe.

And I learned that all these things were also empty and futile, like chasing the wind;)

¹⁸ for in much wisdom is much indignation, and he that increaseth knowing, increaseth also travail. (for the greater one’s wisdom, the greater one’s anger,or one’s vexation, and he who increaseth his knowledge, also increaseth his own troubles.)

¹⁷ And I give my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I have known that even this is vexation of spirit;

¹⁸ for, in abundance of wisdom is abundance of sadness, and he who addeth knowledge addeth pain.'
