Acts 4:1-17 in American Standard Version (1901)

1 And as they spake unto the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,
2 being sore troubled because they taught the people, and proclaimed in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
3 And they laid hands on them, and put them in ward unto the morrow: for it was now eventide.
4 But many of them that heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.
5 And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem;
6 and Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest.
7 And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, By what power, or in what name, have ye done this?
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders,
9 if we this day are examined concerning a good deed done to an impotent man, by what means this man is made whole;
10 be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even in him doth this man stand here before you whole.
11 He is the stone which was set at nought of you the builders, which was made the head of the corner.
12 And in none other is there salvation: for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, wherein we must be saved.
13 Now when they beheld the boldness of Peter and John, and had perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.
14 And seeing the man that was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.
15 But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,
16 saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been wrought through them, is manifest to all that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it.
17 But that it spread no further among the people, let us threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name.

Acts 4:1-17 in Translation for Translators

1 Meanwhile, in the temple courtyard, there were some priests, the officer who was in charge of the temple police, and also some SYN Sadducee sect members. These men came to Peter and John while the two of them were speaking to the people.
2 These men were very angry, because the two apostles were teaching the people about Jesus. What they were telling the people was that because ◄ God caused Jesus to become alive again/God raised Jesus from the dead►, God would cause other people who had died to become alive again.
3 So those officials seized Peter and John. Then they put them in jail. They had to wait until the next day to question Peter and John, because it was already evening and it was contrary to their Jewish law to question people at night.
4 However, many people who had heard the message from Peter believed in Jesus. (OR, But many people had already believed in Jesus, because they had heard the message from Peter.) So the number of men who believed in Jesus increased to about five thousand.
5 The next day the supreme priest summoned the other chief priests, the teachers of the Jewish laws, and the other members of the Jewish Council, and they gathered together in one place in Jerusalem.
6 Annas, the former supreme priest, Caiaphas who was the new supreme priest, two other former supreme priests whose names were John and Alexander, and other men who were related to the supreme priest were there.
7 They commanded guards to bring Peter and John into the courtroom MTY and have them stand in front of them. Then one of the leaders questioned the two of them, saying, “Who do you two claim gave you the power to heal this man? And who authorized MTY you to do this DOU?”
8 So as the Holy Spirit completely controlled Peter, he said to them, “You fellow Israelites who rule us and all of you other elders, listen!
9 Today you are questioning us concerning our doing something good for a man who was crippled, and you asked us how he was healed.
10 So we(exc) want you and all of our other fellow Israelites to know this: It is because Jesus the Messiah MTY from Nazareth healed this man that he is able to stand here. God considers that it was you who nailed Jesus to a cross, but God caused him to become alive again.
11 In the Psalms this was written about the Messiah: He is like MET the stone that was rejected by the builders {that the builders rejected}. But that stone became the most important stone in the building that they were building. Jesus is that stone, and you are those builders who threw away the stone that was the most important one.
12 So he alone can save us MTY. God has sent only one person MTY into the world who can save us from the guilt of our sins, and that person is Jesus!”
13 The Jewish leaders realized that Peter and John ◄were not afraid of them/spoke boldly►. They also learned that the two men were ordinary people who had not studied in schools. So the leaders were amazed, and they realized that these men had associated with Jesus.
14 They also saw the man who had been healed standing there with the two of them, so they were not able to say anything to oppose Peter and John.
15 So the Jewish leaders commanded guards to take Peter, John, and the man outside of the room where those leaders were meeting. After they did so, the leaders talked with each other about Peter and John.
16 Being frustrated, one after another, they said, “◄There is really nothing that we can do to punish these two men!/How can we (inc) do anything to punish these two men?► RHQ Almost everyone HYP who is living in Jerusalem knows that they have done an amazing miracle, so we cannot tell people that it did not happen!
17 However, we must not allow other people to hear about this miracle. So we must tell these men that we will punish them if they continue to tell other people about this MTY man who they say gave them the power to do it.”

Acts 4:1-17 in Bible in Basic English

1 And while they were talking to the people, the priests and the captain of the Temple and the Sadducees came up to them,
2 Being greatly troubled because they were teaching the people and preaching Jesus as an example of the coming back from the dead.
3 And they took them and put them in prison till the morning, for it was now evening.
4 But a number of those who gave hearing to the word had faith; and they were now about five thousand.
5 And on the day after, the rulers and those in authority and the scribes came together in Jerusalem;
6 And Annas, the high priest, was there, and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all the relations of the high priest.
7 Then sending for Peter and John, they said, By what power and in whose name have you done this?
8 Then Peter, being full of the Holy Spirit, said to them, O you rulers of the people and men of authority,
9 If we are questioned today about a good work done to a man who was ill, as to how he has been made well,
10 Take note, all of you, and all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you put to death on the cross, whom God gave back from the dead, even through him is this man now before you completely well.
11 He is the stone which you builders had no use for, but which has been made the chief stone of the building.
12 And in no other is there salvation: for there is no other name under heaven, given among men, through which we may have salvation.
13 Now when they saw that Peter and John were without fear, though they were men of no education or learning, they were greatly surprised; and they took note of them that they had been with Jesus.
14 And, seeing that the man who had been made well was there with them, they were not able to say anything against it.
15 But when they had given them orders to go out of the Sanhedrin, they had a discussion among themselves,
16 Saying, What are we to do with these men? for certainly it is clear to all who are living in Jerusalem that a most important sign has been done by them, and it is not possible to say that it is not so.
17 But so that it may not go farther among the people, let us put them in fear of punishment if they say anything in future in this name.

Acts 4:1-17 in Darby Translation

1 And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,
2 being distressed on account of their teaching the people and preaching by Jesus the resurrection from among the dead;
3 and they laid hands on them, and put them in ward till the morrow; for it was already evening.
4 But many of those who had heard the word believed; and the number of the men had become about five thousand.
5 And it came to pass on the morrow that their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together at Jerusalem,
6 and Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the high priestly family;
7 and having placed them in the midst they inquired, In what power or in what name have ye done this?
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people and elders of Israel,
9 if we this day are called upon to answer as to the good deed done to the infirm man, how he has been healed,
10 be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazaraean, whom ye have crucified, whom God has raised from among the dead, by him this man stands here before you sound in body.
11 He is the stone which has been set at nought by you the builders, which is become the corner stone.
12 And salvation is in none other, for neither is there another name under heaven which is given among men by which we must be saved.
13 But seeing the boldness of Peter and John, and perceiving that they were unlettered and uninstructed men, they wondered; and they recognised them that they were with Jesus.
14 And beholding the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to reply;
15 but having commanded them to go out of the council they conferred with one another,
16 saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed an evident sign has come to pass through their means is manifest to all that inhabit Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.
17 But that it be not further spread among the people, let us threaten them severely no longer to speak to any man in this name.

Acts 4:1-17 in Douay-Rheims 1899

1 And as they were speaking to the people, the priests, and the officer of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them,
2 Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead:
3 And they laid hands upon them, and put them in hold till the next day; for it was now evening.
4 But many of them who had heard the word, believed; and the number of the men was made five thousand.
5 And it came to pass on the morrow, that their princes, and ancients, and scribes, were gathered together in Jerusalem;
6 And Annas the high priest, and Caiphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest.
7 And setting them in the midst, they asked: By what power, or by what name, have you done this?
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said to them: Ye princes of the people, and ancients, hear:
9 If we this day are examined concerning the good deed done to the infirm man, by what means he hath been made whole:
10 Be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God hath raised from the dead, even by him this man standeth here before you whole.
11 This is the stone which was rejected by you the builders, which is become the head of the corner.
12 Neither is there salvation in any other. For there is no other name under heaven given to men, whereby we must be saved.
13 Now seeing the constancy of Peter and of John, understanding that they were illiterate and ignorant men, they wondered; and they knew them that they had been with Jesus.
14 Seeing the man also who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.
15 But they commanded them to go aside out of the council; and they conferred among themselves,
16 Saying: What shall we do to these men? for indeed a known miracle hath been done by them, to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem: it is manifest, and we cannot deny it.
17 But that it may be no farther spread among the people, let us threaten them that they speak no more in this name to any man.

1 Now while they were speaking to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon them,
2 being greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.
3 And they laid hands on them, and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening.
4 However, many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.

7 And they brought them forward and began to inquire, “By what power or by what name have you done this?”
8 Then Peter, having been filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel:
9 If we today are being judged for a good work to a weak man, by what means he has been made well,
10 let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by this name this man stands here before you whole.
11 This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you, the builders, which became the chief cornerstone.’
12 Nor is there salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven which has been given among men by which we must be saved.”
13 Now when they observed the boldness of Peter and John, and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.
14 But seeing the man that had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say against them.
15 And they commanded them to go away outside the council, and began to confer among themselves,
16 saying, “What shall we do to these men? For indeed, that a known sign has come to pass by them is evident to all those who are dwelling in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.

Acts 4:1-17 in The New Testament with Commentary

1 Now as they were speaking to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came at them,
2 being upset because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
3 And they laid hands on them and put them in custody until the next day, because it was already evening.
4 (However, many of those who heard the message believed; the number of the men came to be about five thousand.)
5 So the next day an assembly of their rulers, both elders and scribes, occurred in Jerusalem,
6 along with Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, John and Alexander, and as many as were of high-priestly descent.
7 And having placed them in the middle of the assembly they started questioning: “By what power, or by what name did you do this?”
8 Then Peter, full of Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel:
9 If we are being examined today about a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well,
10 be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Natsorean, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole.
11 This is ‘the stone which was despised by you, the builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’
12 Also, the salvation does not exist in anyone else, because there is no other name under heaven, given among men, by which we must be saved.”
13 Now upon observing the boldness of Peter and John and perceiving that they were uneducated and unskilled men, they marveled; and they recognized that they had been with Jesus.
14 Further, seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.
15 So ordering them to go out from the council they began to confer among themselves,
16 saying: “What can we do to these men? Because, indeed, that a notable miracle has been done through them is evident to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.
17 But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us severely threaten them to no longer speak to anyone in this name.”

Acts 4:1-17 in Free Bible Version

1 While they were talking to the people, the priests, the captain of the Temple guard, and the Sadducees came up to them.
2 They were angry that they were teaching the people, telling them that through Jesus there is resurrection from the dead.
3 They arrested them and placed them under guard until the following day since it was already evening.
4 But many who had heard the message believed it, and the total number of believers grew to about five thousand.
5 The next day, the rulers, elders, and religious leaders met together in Jerusalem.
6 They included the high priest Annas, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and others of the high priest's family.
7 They brought Peter and John before them and asked, “By what power or by whose authority have you done this?”
8 Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, answered them. “Rulers of the people, and elders:
9 Are we being interrogated regarding a good deed done to a man who couldn't help himself, and how he came to be healed?
10 If so, all of you should know, and all the people of Israel, that it was in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the one you killed on a cross and whom God raised from the dead—it's because of him that this man stands before you completely healed.
11 ‘He is the stone you builders rejected, but he has been made the chief cornerstone.’
12 There is no salvation in anyone else; there is no other name under heaven given to humanity that can possibly save us.”
13 When they saw Peter and John's confidence, and realized they were uneducated, ordinary men, they were very surprised. They also recognized them as Jesus' companions.
14 Since they could see the man who had been healed standing right there with them, they had nothing to say in response to what had happened.
15 So they instructed them to wait outside the council while they discussed the matter among themselves.
16 “What should we do with these men?” they asked. “We can't deny a significant miracle has happened through them. Everybody living here in Jerusalem knows about it.
17 But to prevent it spreading among the people any further, we should threaten them never to speak to anybody in this name again.”

Acts 4:1-17 in George Noyes Bible

1 And while they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,
2 being indignant that they taught the people, and proclaimed in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
3 And they laid hands upon them, and put them in prison until the next day; for it was now evening.
4 Many however of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men became five thousand.
5 And it came to pass on the next day, that their rulers and elders and scribes,
6 and Annas the high-priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high-priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.
7 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, did ye do this?
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people, and elders of Israel!
9 If we are this day examined in respect to a good deed done to a cripple, by what means he hath been restored,
10 be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead,—by him doth this man stand here before you sound.
11 This is the stone which was set at nought by you the builders, which is become a cornerstone.
12 And there is salvation in no other; for there is not another name under heaven, that hath been given among men, by which we must be saved.
13 And when they beheld the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and common men, they wondered; and they recognized them as having been with Jesus.
14 And seeing the man that had been cured standing with them, they could say nothing in reply.
15 But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,
16 saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a remarkable sign hath been wrought by them is manifest to all that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it.

1 While Peter and John were still speaking to the people, the chief priest, with the officer in charge at the Temple and the Sadducees, came up to them,
2 much annoyed because they were teaching the people, and because, through Jesus, they were preaching the resurrection from the dead.
3 They arrested the apostles and, as it was already evening, had them placed in custody until the next day.
4 Many, however, of those who had heard the apostles' message became believers in Christ, the number of the men alone amounting to about five thousand.
5 The next day, a meeting of the leaders of the people, the elders, and the teachers of the Law was held in Jerusalem.
6 There were present Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and all who were of High-Priestly rank.
7 They had Peter and John brought before them, and questioned them. “By what power,” they asked, “Or in whose name have men like you done this thing?”
8 Then, Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said, “Leaders of the people and elders,
9 since we are on our trial today for a kind act done to a helpless man, and are asked in what way the man here before you has been cured,
10 let me tell you all and all the people of Israel, that it is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified and whom God raised from the dead — it is, I say, by his name that this man stands here before you lame no longer.
11 Jesus is ‘the stone which, scorned by you the builders, has yet become the corner stone.’
12 And salvation is in him alone; for there is no other name in the whole world, given to people, to which we must look for our salvation.”
13 When the Council saw how boldly Peter and John spoke, and found that they were uneducated men of humble station, they were surprised, and realised that they had been companions of Jesus.
14 But, when they looked at the man who had been healed, standing there with them, they had nothing to say.
15 So they ordered them out of court, and then began consulting together.

Acts 4:1-17 in Plain English Version

1 Peter and John were still talking to the people, then some Jewish boss men got up and came to them. Those bosses were the men that look after the Jewish ceremonies, and the boss of the soldiers that looked after God’s ceremony house, and some men called Sadducees. They all came to Peter and John.
2 They heard Peter and John teaching the people and saying that God will make people alive, just like he made Jesus alive. And those boss men were really angry.
3 So they grabbed Peter and John. Those boss men wanted to take them to court, but it was already late in the afternoon, so the soldiers locked up Peter and John in jail to wait until the next day.
4 But already a lot of the people listened to Peter and John, and they believed everything those 2 men said, and they started to follow Jesus. More and more people started to follow Jesus until there were about 5,000 men following him at that time.
5 The next day all the Jewish leaders met together for a court in the city called Jerusalem. They were the Jewish bosses, and the leaders of the Jewish ceremonies, and the men that taught about Jewish law.
6 The big boss of all the Jewish ceremonies, called Annas, was there. Some of his family were there, the men called Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and some other men too.
7 That boss mob got Peter and John to stand there in the middle of them, and they said, “This man couldn’t walk. He was crippled. What power did you use to make this man better? And who told you to do that?”
8 The Holy Spirit was in Peter and told him what to say. He said, “Listen, all you leaders and bosses.
9 You are asking us now about the good thing we did for this crippled man. You are asking us about the way we made him better.
10 We used the power of Jesus Christ to make this man better. We want you, and all our Israel countrymen, to know about Jesus, the man from Nazareth. You nailed him to a cross and killed him, but God made him alive again.
11 You know, a long time ago one of God’s men told a picture story about you boss mob, and about Jesus. He wrote this in God’s book, ‘You boss builders reckoned that a stone was rubbish, so you threw it away. But now that stone is the most important one of all.’
12 You see, Jesus is the only one that can save people. God didn’t send anyone else to save us. Jesus is the only one in the world that has power to save people.”
13 The leaders knew that Peter and John were ordinary men that never went to bible school, but they were not frightened to talk back to those bosses. So those leaders were shocked. Then they remembered that Peter and John were friends of Jesus, and often listened to him.
14 And those leaders saw the man that used to be crippled. He stood right there next to Peter and John. So those leaders couldn’t say anything bad about Peter and John.
15 So they told Peter and John to go out of the meeting, and then they talked to each other.
16 They said, “It’s hard for us to punish those 2 men. Everyone in Jerusalem knows they did that powerful thing, they made that crippled man better. We can’t say that it isn’t true.
17 But we have to stop people talking about it. So we will tell those 2 men not to talk to anyone about Jesus again, and if they do we will make trouble for those 2 men.”

3 And they laid hands on them, and putted them into ward or into keeping into the morrow; for it was then eventide.
4 But many of them that had heard the word, believed; and the number of men was made five thousands or five thousand.
5 And amorrow it was done or Forsooth in the morrow it was done, that the princes of them, and elder men and scribes were gathered in Jerusalem;
6 and Annas, prince of priests, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and how many ever were of the kind or of the kindred of priests.
7 And they set them in the middle, and asked, In what virtue, either in what name, have ye done this thing?
8 Then Peter filled with the Holy Ghost, said to them, Ye princes of the people, and ye elder men, hear ye.
9 If we today be deemed in the good deed of a sick man, in whom or in which this man is made safe,
10 be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from death, in this or in him this man standeth whole before you.
11 This is the stone, which was reproved of you building, which is made into the head of the corner;
12 and health is not in any other. For neither other name under heaven is given to men, in which it behooveth us to be made safe.
13 And they saw the steadfastness of Peter and of John, and when it was found that they were men unlettered or without letters, and lay men, they wondered, and they knew them that they were with Jesus.
14 And they saw the man that was healed, standing with them, and they might nothing gainsay.
15 But they commanded them to go forth without the council. And they spake together,
16 and said, What shall we do to these men? for the sign is made known by them to all men, that dwell at Jerusalem; it is open, and we may not deny.
17 But that it be no more published into the people, menace we to them, that they speak no more in this name to any man.

4 But many of them that had heard the word, believed; and the number of men was made five thousands or and the number of them is made five thousand.
5 And amorrow it was done or Forsooth in the morrow it was done, that the princes of them, and elder men and scribes were gathered in Jerusalem; (And the next morning it was done, that their high priests, and elders, and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem;)
6 and Annas, (the) prince of priests, (or and Annas, the former High Priest), and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and how many ever were of the kind or of the kindred of priests.
7 And they set them in the middle, and asked, In what virtue, either in what name, have ye done this thing? (And they set them in their midst, and asked, By what power, or in what name, have ye done this thing?)
8 Then Peter filled with the Holy Ghost, said to them, Ye princes of the people, and ye elder men, hear ye. (Then Peter filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Ye high priests of the people, and ye elders, listen.)
9 If we today be deemed in the good deed of a sick man, in whom or in which this man is made safe, (If today we be judged for this good deed for a sick man, by which this man is saved,)
10 be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from death or whom God raised from (the) dead, in this (man) or in him, this man standeth whole before you.
11 This is the stone, which was reproved of (or rejected by) you (when) building, which is made into the head of the corner;
12 and health is not in any other. For neither (any) other name under heaven is given to men, in which it behooveth us to be made safe. (and salvation, or deliverance, is not by any other. For no other name under heaven is given to men, by which it behooveth us to be saved.)
13 And they saw the steadfastness of Peter and of John, and when it was found that they were men unlettered or without letters, and lay men, they wondered, and they knew them that they were with Jesus.
14 And they saw the man that was healed, standing with them, and they might nothing gainsay (them), (or and they could not say anything against them).
15 But they commanded them to go forth without the council (or And they ordered them to go outside the Council chamber). And they spake together,
16 and said, What shall we do to these men? for the sign (or this miracle) is made known by them to all men, that dwell at Jerusalem; it is open, and we be not able to deny (it), or and we may not deny (it).
17 But that it be no more published into the people, menace we to them (or let us threaten them), (so) that they speak no more in this name to any man.

Acts 4:1-17 in Young's Literal Translation

1 And as they are speaking unto the people, there came to them the priests, and the magistrate of the temple, and the Sadducees —
2 being grieved because of their teaching the people, and preaching in Jesus the rising again out of the dead —
3 and they laid hands upon them, and did put them in custody unto the morrow, for it was evening already;
4 and many of those hearing the word did believe, and the number of the men became, as it were, five thousand.
5 And it came to pass upon the morrow, there were gathered together of them the rulers, and elders, and scribes, to Jerusalem,
6 and Annas the chief priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the chief priest,
7 and having set them in the midst, they were inquiring, 'In what power, or in what name did ye do this?'
8 Then Peter, having been filled with the Holy Spirit, said unto them: 'Rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,
9 if we to-day are examined concerning the good deed to the ailing man, by whom he hath been saved,
10 be it known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye did crucify, whom God did raise out of the dead, in him hath this one stood by before you whole.
11 'This is the stone that was set at nought by you — the builders, that became head of a corner;
12 and there is not salvation in any other, for there is no other name under the heaven that hath been given among men, in which it behoveth us to be saved.'
13 And beholding the openness of Peter and John, and having perceived that they are men unlettered and plebeian, they were wondering — they were taking knowledge also of them that with Jesus they had been —
14 and seeing the man standing with them who hath been healed, they had nothing to say against it,
15 and having commanded them to go away out of the sanhedrim, they took counsel with one another,
16 saying, 'What shall we do to these men? because that, indeed, a notable sign hath been done through them, to all those dwelling in Jerusalem is manifest, and we are not able to deny it;
17 but that it may spread no further toward the people, let us strictly threaten them no more to speak in this name to any man.'
