Acts 28:13-30 in English

¹³ And from thence we made a circuit, and arrived at Rhegium: and after one day a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli;

¹⁴ where we found brethren, and were entreated to tarry with them seven days: and so we came to Rome.

¹⁵ And from thence the brethren, when they heard of us, came to meet us as far as The Market of Appius and The Three Taverns; whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.

¹⁶ And when we entered into Rome, Paul was suffered to abide by himself with the soldier that guarded him.

¹⁷ And it came to pass, that after three days he called together those that were the chief of the Jews: and when they were come together, he said unto them, I, brethren, though I had done nothing against the people, or the customs of our fathers, yet was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans:

¹⁸ who, when they had examined me, desired to set me at liberty, because there was no cause of death in me.

¹⁹ But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Cæsar; not that I had aught whereof to accuse my nation.

²⁰ For this cause therefore did I entreat you to see and to speak with me: for because of the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

²¹ And they said unto him, We neither received letters from Judæa concerning thee, nor did any of the brethren come hither and report or speak any harm of thee.

²² But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against.

²³ And when they had appointed him a day, they came to him into his lodging in great number; to whom he expounded the matter, testifying the kingdom of God, and persuading them concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses and from the prophets, from morning till evening.

²⁴ And some believed the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved.

²⁵ And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Spirit through Isaiah the prophet unto your fathers,

²⁶ saying, Go thou unto this people, and say, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall in no wise understand; And seeing ye shall see, and shall in no wise perceive:

²⁷ For this people’s heart is waxed gross, And their ears are dull of hearing, And their eyes they have closed; Lest haply they should perceive with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, And should turn again, And I should heal them.

²⁸ Be it known therefore unto you, that this salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles: they will also hear.

³⁰ And he abode two whole years in his own hired dwelling, and received all that went in unto him,

¹³ And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium: and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli:

¹⁴ Where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome.

¹⁵ And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.

¹⁶ And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.

¹⁷ And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.

¹⁸ Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me.

¹⁹ But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Cæsar; not that I had ought to accuse my nation of.

²⁰ For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

²¹ And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judæa concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee.

²² But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.

²³ And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.

²⁴ And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.

²⁵ And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,

²⁶ Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:

²⁷ For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

²⁸ Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.

²⁹ And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.

³⁰ And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him,

¹³ Then we traveled on by ship and arrived at Rhegium port in Italy. The next day, the wind was blowing from behind us, so we sailed along fast. The day after that, we reached Puteoli town, where we left the ship.

¹⁴ In Puteoli we met some believers who invited us to stay with them for a week. After visiting them, we left there and started to travel by land to Rome.

¹⁵ A group of believers who lived in Rome had heard that we (exc) were coming. So they came out from Rome to meet us. Some of them met us at the town called ❛The Market on Appian Road❜, and others met us at the town called ❛The Three Inns❜. When Paul saw those believers, he thanked God and was encouraged.

¹⁶ After we (exc) arrived in Rome, Paul was permitted { a Roman official who was responsible for guarding Paul permitted Paul} to live in a house by himself. But there was always a soldier there to guard him.

¹⁷ After Paul had been there three days, he sent a message to the Jewish leaders to come and talk with him. So they came, and Paul said to them, “My fellow Jews, although I have not opposed our people nor spoken against the customs of our ancestors, our leaders in Jerusalem seized MTY me. But before they could kill me, a Roman commander rescued me and later sent me to Caesarea for Roman authorities/officials to put me on trial.

¹⁸ The Roman authorities/officials questioned me and wanted to release me, because I had not done any bad thing for which I should be executed {they should kill me}.

¹⁹ But when the Jewish leaders SYN there opposed what the Roman authorities wanted to do, I had to formally request that the Emperor judge me here in Rome. But my reason for doing that was not that I wanted to accuse our leaders about anything.

²⁰ So I have requested you to come here so that I can tell you why I am a prisoner. It is because I believe in MTY our Messiah, the one God long ago promised to send to us (inc) Jews.”

²¹ Then the Jewish leaders said, “We (exc) have not received any letters from our fellow Jews in Judea about you. Also, none of our fellow Jews who have arrived here from Judea has said anything bad about you.

²² But we (exc) want to hear what you (sg) think about this Christian sect/group, because we know that in many places HYP bad things are being said {people are saying bad things} about it.”

²³ So they talked with Paul and decided that they would come back on another day to hear him. When that day arrived, those Jews came back to the place where Paul was staying, and they brought more Jews with them. Paul talked to them from morning until evening. He talked to them about how God wants to rule people's lives MET. He tried to convince them that Jesus is the Messiah by reminding them what Moses and the other prophets had written MTY.

²⁴ Some of those Jews believed that what was said by Paul {what Paul said} about Jesus was true, but others did not believe that it was true.

²⁵ So they began to argue with one another. Paul realized that some of them did not want to listen to him, so when they were about to leave, he said, “The Holy Spirit said something to your/our(incl) ancestors. He spoke these words to Isaiah the prophet, and what he said is also true about you:

²⁶ Go to your fellow Israelites and tell them, ‘You repeatedly listen to the message of God, but you never understand what God is saying. You repeatedly look at and see the things that God is doing, but you never understand what they mean.

²⁷ God also said to the prophet, These people do not understand, because they have become stubborn. They have ears, but they do not understand what they hear, and they have closed their eyes because they do not want to see. If they wanted to obey what I say to them, they might understand what they see me doing and what they hear me saying. Then they might turn from their sinful behavior and I would save them.’

²⁸ That is what God said to the prophet Isaiah about our ancestors. But you Jews today do not want to believe God's message. Therefore, I am telling you that God has sent to the non-Jews this message about how he saves people, and they will listen and accept it!”

³⁰ For two whole years Paul stayed there in a house that he rented. Many people came to see him, and he received them all gladly and talked with them.

¹⁷ After three days Paul called together those who were the leaders of the Jews. When they had come together, he said to them, “I, brothers, though I had done nothing against the people or the customs of our fathers, still was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans,

¹⁸ who, when they had examined me, desired to set me free, because there was no cause of death in me.

¹⁹ But when the Jews spoke against it, I was constrained to appeal to Caesar, not that I had anything about which to accuse my nation.

³⁰ Paul stayed two whole years in his own rented house and received all who were coming to him,

¹³ And from there, going about in a curve, we came to Rhegium: and after one day a south wind came up and on the day after we came to Puteoli:

¹⁴ Where we came across some of the brothers, who kept us with them for seven days; and so we came to Rome.

¹⁵ And the brothers, when they had news of us, came out from town as far as Appii Forum and the Three Taverns to have a meeting with us: and Paul, seeing them, gave praise to God and took heart.

¹⁶ And when we came into Rome, they let Paul have a house for himself and the armed man who kept watch over him.

¹⁷ Then after three days he sent for the chief men of the Jews: and when they had come together, he said to them, My brothers, though I had done nothing against the people or the ways of our fathers, I was given, a prisoner from Jerusalem, into the hands of the Romans.

¹⁸ Who, when they had put questions to me, were ready to let me go free, because there was no cause of death in me.

¹⁹ But when the Jews made protest against it, I had to put my cause into Caesar's hands; not because I have anything to say against my nation.

²⁰ But for this reason I sent for you, to see and have talk with you: for because of the hope of Israel I am in these chains.

²¹ And they said to him, We have not had letters from Judaea about you, and no one of the brothers has come to us here to give an account or say any evil about you.

²² But we have a desire to give hearing to your opinion: for as to this form of religion, we have knowledge that in all places it is attacked.

²³ And when a day had been fixed, they came to his house in great numbers; and he gave them teaching, giving witness to the kingdom of God, and having discussions with them about Jesus, from the law of Moses and from the prophets, from morning till evening.

²⁴ And some were in agreement with what he said, but some had doubts.

²⁵ And they went away, for there was a division among them after Paul had said this one thing: Well did the Holy Spirit say by the prophet Isaiah to your fathers,

²⁶ Go to this people and say, Though you give ear, you will not get knowledge; and seeing, you will see, but the sense will not be clear to you:

²⁷ For the heart of this people has become fat and their ears are slow in hearing and their eyes are shut; for fear that they might see with their eyes and give hearing with their ears and become wise in their hearts and be turned again to me, so that I might make them well.

²⁸ Be certain, then, that the salvation of God is sent to the Gentiles, and they will give hearing.

³⁰ And for the space of two years, Paul was living in the house of which he had the use, and had talk with all those who went in to see him,

¹³ Whence, going in a circuitous course, we arrived at Rhegium; and after one day, the wind having changed to south, on the second day we came to Puteoli,

¹⁴ where, having found brethren, we were begged to stay with them seven days. And thus we went to Rome.

¹⁵ And thence the brethren, having heard about us, came to meet us as far as Appii Forum and Tres Tabernae, whom when Paul saw, he thanked God and took courage.

¹⁶ And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered up the prisoners to the praetorian prefect, but Paul was allowed to remain by himself with the soldier who kept him.

¹⁷ And it came to pass after three days, that he called together those who were the chief of the Jews; and when they had come together he said to them, Brethren, I having done nothing against the people or the customs of our forefathers, have been delivered a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans,

¹⁸ who having examined me were minded to let me go, because there was nothing worthy of death in me.

¹⁹ But the Jews speaking against it, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, not as having anything to accuse my nation of.

²⁰ For this cause therefore I have called you to me to see and to speak to you; for on account of the hope of Israel I have this chain about me.

²¹ And they said to him, For our part, we have neither received letters from Judaea concerning thee, nor has any one of the brethren who has arrived reported or said anything evil concerning thee.

²² But we beg to hear of thee what thou thinkest, for as concerning this sect it is known to us that it is everywhere spoken against.

²³ And having appointed him a day many came to him to the lodging, to whom he expounded, testifying of the kingdom of God, and persuading them concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses and the prophets, from early morning to evening.

²⁴ And some were persuaded of the things which were said, but some disbelieved.

²⁵ And being disagreed among themselves they left; Paul having spoken one word, Well spoke the Holy Spirit through Esaias the prophet to our fathers,

²⁶ saying, Go to this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear and not understand, and seeing ye shall see and not perceive.

²⁷ For the heart of this people has become fat, and they hear heavily with their ears, and they have closed their eyes; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

²⁸ Be it known to you therefore, that this salvation of God has been sent to the nations; they also will hear it.

²⁹ And he having said this, the Jews went away, having great reasoning among themselves.

³⁰ And he remained two whole years in his own hired lodging, and received all who came to him,

¹⁷ And after the third day, he called together the chief of the Jews. And when they were assembled, he said to them: Men, brethren, I, having done nothing against the people, or the custom of our fathers, was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans;

¹⁸ Who, when they had examined me, would have released me, for that there was no cause of death in me;

¹⁹ But the Jews contradicting it, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar; not that I had any thing to accuse my nation of.

²⁰ For this cause therefore I desired to see you, and to speak to you. Because that for the hope of Israel, I am bound with this chain.

²¹ But they said to him: We neither received letters concerning thee from Judea, neither did any of the brethren that came hither, relate or speak any evil of thee.

²² But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest; for as concerning this sect, we know that it is every where contradicted.

²³ And when they had appointed him a day, there came very many to him unto his lodgings; to whom he expounded, testifying the kingdom of God, and persuading them concerning Jesus, out of the law of Moses and the prophets, from morning until evening.

²⁴ And some believed the things that were said; but some believed not.

²⁵ And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, Paul speaking this one word: Well did the Holy Ghost speak to our fathers by Isaias the prophet,

²⁶ Saying: Go to this people, and say to them: With the ear you shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing you shall see, and shall not perceive.

²⁷ For the heart of this people is grown gross, and with their ears have they heard heavily, and their eyes they have shut; lest perhaps they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

²⁸ Be it known therefore to you, that this salvation of God is sent to the Gentiles, and they will hear it.

²⁹ And when he had said these things, the Jews went out from him, having much reasoning among themselves.

¹³ from where having sailed around we arrived at Rhegium. And after one day arose a south wind, on the second day we came to Puteoli,

¹⁴ where having found brothers, we were urged by them to stay for seven days; and so we came to Rome.

¹⁵ And from there the brothers, when they heard about our circumstances, they came to meet with us as far as Appii Forum and Three Inns, whom when Paul saw, he gave thanks to God and took courage.

¹⁶ Now when we came to Rome, the centurion handed over the prisoners to the captain of the guard; but Paul was allowed to stay by himself with the soldier guarding him.

¹⁷ And it came to pass after three days that Paul called together those who were prominent among the Jews; and when they had come together, he said to them: “Men, brothers, though I have done nothing against the people or the customs of our forefathers, yet I was handed over as a prisoner from Jerusalem, into the hands of the Romans,

¹⁸ who, when they had examined me, were wanting to release me because there was no cause for my case.

¹⁹ But when the Jews spoke in opposition, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, not that I had anything of which to accuse my nation.

²⁰ Therefore for this reason I have requested you, to see and to speak to you, for because of the hope of Israel I am wearing this chain.”

²¹ Then they said to him, “We neither received letters from Judea concerning you, nor have any of the brothers who arrived report or speak anything evil about you.

²² But we request to hear from you the things which you think; for concerning this sect, it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against.”

²³ And having appointed for him a day, many came to him at his house, to whom he was explaining and solemnly testifying to the kingdom of God, and persuading them of the things concerning Jesus from both the Law of Moses and from the Prophets, from morning till evening.

²⁴ And some were persuaded by the things being said, but others refused to believe.

²⁵ And being in disagreement with one another, they went away after Paul had said one word: “The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah the prophet to our fathers,

²⁶ saying, ‘Go to this people and say: “Hearing you will hear, and by no means understand; and seeing you shall see, and by no means perceive;

²⁷ For the hearts of this people has become dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, and their eyes have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and they should hear with their ears, lest they should understand with their heart and turn back, so that I should heal them.” ’

²⁸ “Therefore let it be known to you that the salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will hear it!”

²⁹ And when he had said these things, the Jews went away, having a great dispute among themselves.

³⁰ Then Paul remained two full years in his own rented house, and he was receiving all those who were coming to him,

¹³ from there we tacked back and forth and arrived at Rhegium. After one day a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli,

¹⁴ where we found brothers who urged us to stay there seven days—that was how we went toward Rome.

¹⁵ And the brothers there, when they heard about our circumstances, came out to meet us as far as Appii Forum and Three Inns. When Paul saw them he thanked God and took courage.

¹⁶ Now when we entered Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the commander; but Paul was allowed to live by himself, with the soldier who guarded him.

¹⁷ It happened that after three days Paul called together the leaders of the Jews; and when they had assembled he said to them: “Men, brothers, though I had done nothing against ‘the people’ or the ancestral customs, still I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans,

¹⁸ who, when they had examined me, were intending to release me, because I was not guilty of any crime deserving death.

¹⁹ But when the Jews spoke against it, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar; not that I had anything about which to accuse my nation.

²⁰ For this reason therefore I asked to see you and speak with you; it is because of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain.”

²¹ So they said to him: “We have neither received letters from Judea concerning you, nor have any of the brothers who came reported or spoken any evil about you.

²² But we desire to hear from you what you think; because as for this sect, we know that it is spoken against everywhere.”

²³ So arranging a day with him, even more people came to him at his lodging, to whom he kept expounding from morning until evening: solemnly testifying about the Kingdom of God and trying to convince them concerning Jesus, from both the Law of Moses and the Prophets.

²⁴ Well some were persuaded by what had been said, and some kept refusing to believe.

²⁵ So being in disagreement among themselves they started to leave, after Paul had said this one word: “The Holy Spirit spoke correctly to our fathers through Isaiah the prophet,

²⁶ saying: ‘Go to this people and say, “You will keep on hearing, but never understand; you will keep on seeing, but never perceive”;

²⁷ because the heart of this people has become sluggish, and their ears are hard of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; in order that they not see with their eyes, nor hear with their ears, nor understand with their heart, nor turn back, so I could heal them.’

²⁸ Therefore let it be known to you that the salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will listen!”

²⁹ And when he had said these things the Jews went their way, having a great dispute among themselves.

³⁰ Paul stayed two whole years in his own rented house, and received all who came to see him,

¹³ From there we sailed on to Rhegium. The following day a south wind blew, and on the second day we arrived at the port of Puteoli,

¹⁴ where we discovered some believers. They asked us to stay with them for a week. So we came to Rome.

¹⁵ When some of the believers from Rome heard we had arrived they came to meet us at the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns. When Paul saw them, he was thankful to God and much encouraged.

¹⁶ When we entered Rome, Paul was permitted to stay under house arrest with a soldier to guard him.

¹⁷ Three days later Paul invited the Jewish leaders there to come to see him. When they were all together he told them, “Brothers, even though I had not done anything wrong against the people or the customs of our forefathers, I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Roman authorities.

¹⁸ After they had interrogated me they wanted to release me because I had done nothing that warranted execution.

¹⁹ But the Jewish leaders opposed this, so I was forced to appeal to Caesar—not that I had any accusations against my own people.

²⁰ That's why I asked to see you, and talk to you, because it is on account of the hope of Israel that I am chained up like this.”

²¹ “We have not received any letters from Judea about you, and none of our people have come here with reports against you or to speak badly of you,” they told him.

²² “But we do want to hear from you what you believe—especially regarding this sect, which we know is condemned everywhere.”

²³ They made an appointment to meet with him. On that day many people came to where he was staying. From morning till night Paul was explaining to them, telling them about the kingdom of God. He tried to convince them about Jesus using the writings of the law of Moses and the prophets.

²⁴ Some accepted what Paul said, but some refused to believe.

²⁵ They couldn't agree among themselves, and they left after Paul told them this: “The Holy Spirit said it well through Isaiah the prophet to your forefathers,

²⁶ ‘Go to these people and tell them: Even though you hear, you won't ever understand, and even though you see, you won't ever comprehend.

²⁷ For the minds of these people have become calloused and hard, their ears cannot hear, their eyes are shut, in case they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and understand with their minds, and might come back to me and I would heal them.’

²⁸ Consequently you should know that this salvation that comes from God has been sent to the foreigners and they will listen.”

³⁰ For two full years Paul stayed there in the house he rented, welcoming everyone who came to see him.

¹³ And from thence we set a compasse, and came to Rhegium: and after one day, the South wind blewe, and we came the seconde day to Putioli:

¹⁴ Where we found brethren, and were desired to tary with them seuen dayes, and so we went toward Rome.

¹⁵ And from thence, when the brethren heard of vs, they came to meete vs at the Market of Appius, and at the Three tauernes, whom when Paul sawe, he thanked God, and waxed bolde.

¹⁶ So when we came to Rome, the Centurion deliuered the prisoners to the generall Captaine: but Paul was suffered to dwell by him selfe with a souldier that kept him.

¹⁷ And the third day after, Paul called the chiefe of the Iewes together: and when they were come, he said vnto them, Men and brethren, though I haue committed nothing against the people, or Lawes of the fathers, yet was I deliuered prisoner from Hierusalem into the handes of the Romanes.

¹⁸ Who when they had examined me, would haue let me goe, because there was no cause of death in me.

¹⁹ But when the Iewes spake contrary, I was constrained to appeale vnto Cesar, not because I had ought to accuse my nation of.

¹⁹ But when the Jews spoke against it, I was constrained to appeal to Caesar; not that I had any charge to bring against my nation.

²⁰ For this reason therefore I have called for you, to see you and speak to you; for it is on account of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain.

²³ And when they had appointed him a day, many came to him at his lodging; to whom he expounded, and earnestly testified, the kingdom of God, endeavoring to persuade them concerning Jesus both from the Law of Moses, and from the Prophets, from morning till evening.

²⁴ And some believed the things spoken, and some believed not.

²⁵ So, disagreeing with one another, they took their departure, after Paul had spoken one word: Well did the Holy Spirit speak through Isaiah the prophet to your fathers,

²⁶ saying, “Go to this people, and say, 'Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see and not perceive.

²⁷ For the heart of this people hath become gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart and turn from their ways, and I should heal them.'”

¹⁵ The followers there had heard about us, and came out as far as the Market of Appius and the Three Taverns to meet us. At sight of them Paul thanked God and was much cheered.

¹⁶ On our reaching Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, except for the soldier who was in charge of him.

¹⁷ Three days after our arrival, Paul invited the leading Jews to meet him; and, when they came, he said, “Brothers, although I had done nothing hostile to the interests of our nation or to our ancestral customs, yet I was sent from Jerusalem as a prisoner, and handed over to the Romans.

¹⁸ The Romans, when they had examined me, were ready to release me, because there was nothing in my conduct deserving death.

¹⁹ But, as the Jewish leaders opposed my release, I was compelled to appeal to the Emperor — not, indeed, that I had any charge to make against my own nation.

²⁰ This, then, is my reason for urging you to come to see me and talk with me; because it is for the sake of the hope of Israel that I am here in chains.”

²⁵ So, as they disagreed amongst themselves, they began to disperse, Paul adding only — “True, indeed, was the declaration made by the Holy Spirit, through the prophet Isaiah to your ancestors —

²⁶ Go to this nation and say: You will hear with your ears without ever understanding, and, though you have eyes, you will see without ever perceiving.

¹³ Then we kept going and we came to a town called Rhegium, in Italy country. The next day the wind was blowing from behind us and pushing us fast, and the day after that we came to the town called Puteoli. Then we got off there and left that ship.

¹⁴ We met some Christians in Puteoli, and they asked us to stay with them, so we stayed there for a week. Then we left Puteoli and started to go along the road to Rome.

¹⁵ Some Christians that lived in Rome heard that we were coming, so they came out from Rome to meet us half way. Some of them met us at the place called Appius, and others met us at the place called the 3 Pubs. Paul saw them and he felt really good and happy, and he thanked God for them.

¹⁶ Then we all came to Rome. The Roman boss that was in charge of the prisoners there let Paul live in a house by himself, but he always had a soldier there to guard him.

¹⁷ After Paul was in Rome for 3 days, he sent a message to the Jewish leaders to come and talk with him. So they came, and Paul said to them, “My brothers, I didn’t do anything bad to our people, and I didn’t say anything bad about our Jewish culture. But our leaders in Jerusalem grabbed me, and they started to kill me. Then the boss of the Roman soldiers came and got me, and made me his prisoner.

¹⁸ The Roman bosses asked me questions in their court, and they listened to what I said to answer them, and they reckoned that I didn’t do anything bad. So they wanted to let me go.

¹⁹ But the Jewish leaders didn’t agree, so I had to ask those bosses to send me to Rome, for the big boss called Caesar to judge me. But I don’t want to make any trouble for my own Jewish people, about anything.

²⁰ So I asked you to come here now. I want to meet you and tell you my story. You see, I believe in the man that we are all waiting for. He is the one that God promised to send to us Israel people. But our leaders of Israel didn’t agree with me, and that is why I’m a prisoner now, tied up with this chain.”

²¹ Then the Jewish leaders said, “We didn’t get any letters about you from our Jewish friends in Judea country. And some people came here from Judea, but none of them said anything bad about you.

²² But we know that people in a lot of places don’t agree with the Christians, so we want to hear what you have to say.”

²³ Then they talked together and agreed to come back on another day to hear Paul. When that day came a lot of Jews came to Paul’s house. He started talking with them in the morning, and he kept going until the sun went down. He told them about the way God wants to bring people into his family, and he showed them that God’s book says that Jesus is the man that God sent to save people. He talked to them about the words in God’s book that Moses wrote, and the words that God’s other men wrote. He showed them that they all told that message about Jesus.

²⁴ Some of them believed Paul’s words, but others didn’t believe him.

²⁵ So they started to argue with each other, and then they got up to go home. Then Paul told those that didn’t believe his message, “The Holy Spirit said a true word to your grand-fathers of long ago. He got his man, called Isaiah, to write it in God’s book. He wrote,

²⁶ ‘Go to these Jewish people and say, “You keep hearing God’s words with your ears, but you don’t understand them properly. It’s like your ears are going deaf. You keep looking with your eyes and you see God doing things, but you don’t understand it all. It’s like you closed your eyes. Your problem is that you don’t want to know God’s message. If you do understand God’s message properly you will turn around and come back to him, and then God will not say you are guilty for the bad things you did. But you mob don’t want to come back to God.” ’ That’s what Isaiah wrote.”

²⁸ Paul kept talking to them, he said, “You Jews have to understand this. God sent his message to you, but you didn’t listen to it. So he is sending that message to the people that are not Jews, and they will listen to it, and believe it.”

³⁰ For the next 2 years Paul was a prisoner in Rome, but he wasn’t in jail. They let him stay in the house that he rented. A lot of people came to him, and he was happy to see them and talk with them.

¹³ And from thence we set a compasse and came to Regium. And after one daye the south wynde blewe and we came the next daye to Putiolus:

¹⁴ where we founde brethren and were desyred to tary with them seven dayes and so came to Rome.

¹⁵ And from thence when the brethren hearde of vs they came agaynst vs to Apiphorum and to the thre taverns. When Paul sawe the he thanked God and wexed bolde.

¹⁶ And when he came to Rome the vnder captayne delyvered the presoners to the chefe captayne of the host: but Paul was suffered to dwell by him selfe with one soudier that kept him.

¹⁷ And it fortuned after thre dayes that Paul called the chefe of the Iewes together. And when they were come he sayde vnto the: Men and brethren though I have committed nothinge agaynst the people or lawes of oure fathers: yet was I delyvered presoner from Ierusalem in to the hondes of the Romayns.

¹⁸ Which when they had examined me wolde have let me goo because they founde no cause of deeth in me.

¹⁹ But when the Iewes cryed contrary I was constrayned to appeale vnto Cesar: not because I had ought to accuse my people of.

²⁰ For this cause have I called for you even to se you and to speake with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bounde with this chayne.

²¹ And they sayde vnto him: We nether receaved letters out of Iewry pertayninge vnto the nether came eny of the brethren that shewed or spake eny harme of the.

²² But we will heare of the what thou thynkest. For we have hearde of this secte that every wheare it is spoken agaynst.

²³ And when they had apoynted him a daye ther came many vnto him into his lodgynge. To whom he expounded and testifyed the kyngdome of God and preached vnto the of Iesu: both out of the lawe of Moses and also out of the prophetes even from mornynge to nyght.

²⁴ And some beleved the thinges which were spoken and some beleved not.

²⁵ When they agreed not amonge the selves they departed after that Paul had spoken one worde. Well spake the holy goost by Esay the prophet vnto oure fathers

²⁶ sayinge: Goo vnto this people and saye: with youre eares shall ye heare and shall not vnderstonde: and with youre eyes shall ye se and shall not perceave.

²⁷ For the hert of this people is wexed grosse and their eares were thycke of hearynge and their eyes have they closed: lest they shuld se with their eyes and heare with their eares and vnderstonde with their hertes and shuld be converted and I shulde heale them.

²⁸ Be it knowen therfore vnto you that this salvacion of God is sent to the gentyls and they shall heare it.

¹⁹ But when the Jews spoke against their desire, I was forced to appeal to Caesar, although it is not as if I were bringing any accusation against my nation.

²⁰ Because of my appeal, then, I have asked to see you and to speak with you. It is because of the certain hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain.”

²¹ Then they said to him, “We neither received letters from Judea about you, nor did any of the brothers come and report or say anything bad about you.

²² But we want to hear from you what you think about this sect, because it is known by us that it is spoken against everywhere.”

²³ When they had set a day for him, more people came to him at his dwelling place. He presented the matter to them, and testified about the kingdom of God. He tried to persuade them about Jesus, both from the law of Moses and from the prophets, from morning until evening.

²⁴ Some were convinced about the things which were said, while others did not believe.

²⁵ When they did not agree with one another, they left after Paul had spoken this one word, “The Holy Spirit spoke well through Isaiah the prophet to your fathers.

²⁶ He said, 'Go to this people and say, “By hearing you will hear, but not understand; and seeing you will see, but will not perceive.

²⁷ For the heart of this people has become dull, and with their ears they hardly hear, and they have shut their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart and turn again, and I would heal them.”'

²⁸ Therefore, you should know that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will listen.”

³⁰ Paul lived for two whole years in his own rented house, and he welcomed all who came to him.

¹⁴ where we found brothers, and were entreated to stay with them for seven days. So we came to Rome.

¹⁵ From there the brothers, when they heard of us, came to meet us as far as The Market of Appius and The Three Taverns. When Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage.

¹⁶ When we entered into Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard, but Paul was allowed to stay by himself with the soldier who guarded him.

¹⁷ After three days Paul called together those who were the leaders of the Jews. When they had come together, he said to them, “I, brothers, though I had done nothing against the people or the customs of our fathers, still was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans,

¹⁸ who, when they had examined me, desired to set me free, because there was no cause of death in me.

¹⁹ But when the Jews spoke against it, I was constrained to appeal to Caesar, not that I had anything about which to accuse my nation.

²⁰ For this cause therefore I asked to see you and to speak with you. For because of the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.”

¹⁷ And it came to pass, that after three days, Paul called together the chief of the Jews. And when they were assembled, he said to them, Men, brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.

¹⁸ Who when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me.

¹⁹ But when the Jews spoke against it , I was constrained to appeal to Cesar; not that I had aught to accuse my nation of.

²⁰ For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you , and to speak with you : because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

¹⁹ But for the Jews gainsaid, I was constrained to appeal to the emperor or to Caesar; not as having anything to accuse my people.

²⁰ Therefore for this cause I prayed to see you, and speak to you; for for the hope of Israel I am gird about with this chain.

²⁴ And some believed to these things that were said of Paul, some believed not.

²⁵ And when they were not consent-ing together, they departed. And Paul said one word, For the Holy Ghost spake well by Isaiah, the prophet, to our fathers,

²⁶ and said, Go thou to this people, and say to them, With ear ye shall hear, and ye shall not understand; and ye seeing shall see, and ye shall not behold.

²⁷ For the heart of this people is greatly fatted, and with ears they heard heavily, and they closed together their eyes, lest peradventure they see with eyes, and with ears hear, and by heart understand, and be converted, and I heal them.

²⁸ Therefore be it known to you, that this health of God, is sent to heathen men, and they shall hear.

²⁹ And when he had said these things, Jews went out from him, and had much question, or musing, or seeking, among themselves.

³⁰ And he dwelled full two years in his hired place; and he received all that entered to him,

¹³ From thence we sailed about, and came to Rhegium; and after one day, while the south blew, in the second day we came to Puteoli.

¹⁴ Where when we found (some) brethren, we were prayed to dwell there with them seven days (or we were beseeched to stay there with them for seven days). And so we (finally) came to Rome.

¹⁵ And from thence, when brethren had heard, they came to us to the chapping of Appii, and to the Three Taverns. And when Paul had seen them, he did thankings to God, and took trust. (And from there, when the brothers had heard, they came to meet us at the market, or at the city square, of Appii, and to the Three Taverns. And when Paul had seen them, he gave thanks to God, and took trust.)

¹⁶ And when we came to Rome, it was suffered to Paul to dwell by himself, with a knight keeping him. (And when we came to Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with a soldier guarding him.)

¹⁷ And after the third day, he called together the worthiest of the Jews. And when they came, he said to them, Brethren, I did nothing against the people either custom(s) of (our) fathers, and I was bound at Jerusalem, and was betaken into the hands of (the) Romans. (And after three days, he called together the leaders of the Jews. And when they came, he said to them, Brothers, I did nothing against our people, or against our fathers’ customs, but I was taken captive in Jerusalem, and was delivered into the hands of the Romans.)

¹⁸ And when they had asked of me, (they) would have delivered me, for that no cause (worthy) of death was in me. (And after they had questioned me, they would have released me, because no case, or crime, worthy of death was found against me.)

¹⁹ But for the Jews gainsaid (me), I was constrained to appeal to the emperor or to Caesar, (or But because the Jews spoke against me, I was compelled to appeal to the Emperor); not as having anything to accuse my people (of).

²⁰ Therefore for this cause I prayed to see you, and speak to you, (or And so for this reason I asked to see you, and to speak to you); for for the hope of Israel I am gird about with this chain.

²¹ And they said to him, Neither we have received letters of thee from Judea, neither any of (the) brethren coming showed, either spake, any evil thing of thee. (And they said to him, We have not received any letters about thee from Judea, nor have any of the brothers coming here shown, or spoken, anything bad about thee.)

²² But we pray to hear of thee, what things thou feelest; for of this sect it is known to us, that everywhere men gainsaith it. (But we would like to listen to thee, whatever thou would like to say; for this sect is known to us, and everywhere people speak against it.)

²⁴ And some believed to these things that were said of Paul, some believed not. (And some believed these things that were said by Paul, and some did not believe them.)

¹⁶ And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered up the prisoners to the captain of the barrack, but Paul was suffered to remain by himself, with the soldier guarding him.

¹⁷ And it came to pass after three days, Paul called together those who are the principal men of the Jews, and they having come together, he said unto them: 'Men, brethren, I — having done nothing contrary to the people, or to the customs of the fathers — a prisoner from Jerusalem, was delivered up to the hands of the Romans;

¹⁸ who, having examined me, were wishing to release me, because of their being no cause of death in me,

¹⁹ and the Jews having spoken against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar — not as having anything to accuse my nation of;

²⁰ for this cause, therefore, I called for you to see and to speak with you, for because of the hope of Israel with this chain I am bound.'

²¹ And they said unto him, 'We did neither receive letters concerning thee from Judea, nor did any one who came of the brethren declare or speak any evil concerning thee,

²² and we think it good from thee to hear what thou dost think, for, indeed, concerning this sect it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against;'

²³ and having appointed him a day, they came, more of them unto him, to the lodging, to whom he was expounding, testifying fully the reign of God, persuading them also of the things concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses, and the prophets, from morning till evening,

²⁴ and, some, indeed, were believing the things spoken, and some were not believing.

²⁵ And not being agreed with one another, they were going away, Paul having spoken one word — 'Well did the Holy Spirit speak through Isaiah the prophet unto our fathers,

²⁶ saying, Go on unto this people and say, With hearing ye shall hear, and ye shall not understand, and seeing ye shall see, and ye shall not perceive,

²⁷ for made gross was the heart of this people, and with the ears they heard heavily, and their eyes they did close, lest they may see with the eyes, and with the heart may understand, and be turned back, and I may heal them.

²⁸ 'Be it known, therefore, to you, that to the nations was sent the salvation of God, these also will hear it;'

²⁹ and he having said these things, the Jews went away, having much disputation among themselves;

³⁰ and Paul remained an entire two years in his own hired house, and was receiving all those coming in unto him,
