Acts 22:3-14 in English

³ I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city, at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as ye all are this day:

⁴ and I persecuted this Way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

⁵ As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and journeyed to Damascus to bring them also that were there unto Jerusalem in bonds to be punished.

⁶ And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and drew nigh unto Damascus, about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.

⁷ And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

⁸ And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.

⁹ And they that were with me beheld indeed the light, but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.

¹⁰ And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.

¹¹ And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me I came into Damascus.

¹² And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the Jews that dwelt there,

¹³ came unto me, and standing by me said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And in that very hour I looked up on him.

¹⁴ And he said, The God of our fathers hath appointed thee to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.

³ I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.

⁴ And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

⁵ As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.

⁶ And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.

⁷ And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

⁸ And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.

⁹ And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.

¹⁰ And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.

¹¹ And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.

¹² And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,

¹³ Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.

¹⁴ And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.

¹⁰ And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.

¹¹ And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.

¹² And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the Jews that dwelt there,

¹³ came unto me, and standing by me said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And in that very hour I looked up on him.

¹⁴ And he said, The God of our fathers hath appointed thee to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.

³ “I am a Jew, as are all of you. I was born in Tarsus city, in Cilicia province, but I grew up here in Jerusalem. When I was young, for many years I studied the laws that Moses gave to our ancestors. I was taught by the famous teacher Gamaliel MTY { The famous teacher Gamaliel taught MTY me}. I have carefully obeyed those laws, because I have wanted to obey God. I am sure that many of you also carefully obey those laws.

⁴ That is why I previously persecuted those who believe the message that people call the Way that Jesus taught. I continually looked for ways to kill them. Whenever I found men or women who believed that message, I commanded that they should be seized and thrown { people to seize them and throw them} into jail.

⁵ The suprrme priest knows this, and so do the other respected men who belong to our Jewish Council. They gave me letters to take to their fellow Jews in Damascus city. By means of those letters, they authorized me to go to there and find people who believed in Jesus. They had written in the letters that I was to bring those people as prisoners to Jerusalem, so that they would be punished here { the leaders here could punish them}. So I went on my way to Damascus.

⁶ About noon, my companions and I were getting near Damascus. Suddenly a bright light from the sky flashed all around me.

⁷ The light was so bright that I fell to the ground. Then I heard the voice of someone speaking to me from up in the sky. The one who was speaking to me said, ‘Saul! Saul! Why do you (sg) do things to harm me?’

⁸ I answered, ‘Who are you?’ He replied, ‘I am Jesus from Nazareth. I am the one whom you (sg) are harming by doing things to harm my followers.’

⁹ The men who were traveling with me saw the very bright light, and they heard a voice, but they did not understand what the voice said to me.

¹⁰ Then I asked, ‘Lord, what do you want me to do?’ The Lord told me, ‘Get up and go into Damascus! A man there will tell you (sg) all that I have planned for you to do.’

¹¹ After that, I could not see, because the very bright light had caused me to become blind. So my companions took me by the hand and led me until we(exc) arrived in Damascus.

¹² A couple of days later, a man whose name was Ananias came to see me. He was a man who greatly respected God and carefully obeyed our Jewish laws. All the Jews living in Damascus said good things about him.

¹³ He came and stood beside me and said to me, ‘Brother Saul, see again!’ Instantly I could see! I saw Ananias standing there beside me.

¹⁴ Then he said: ‘The God whom we(inc) worship and whom our ancestors worshipped has chosen you and will show you what he wants you to do. He has allowed you to see the righteous one, the Messiah, and you have heard him speaking to you.

³ “I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict tradition of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as you all are today.

⁴ I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women,

⁵ as also the high priest and all the council of the elders testify, from whom also I received letters to the brothers, and traveled to Damascus to bring them also who were there to Jerusalem in bonds to be punished.

⁶ “As I made my journey and came close to Damascus, about noon suddenly a great light shone around me from the sky.

⁷ I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’

⁸ I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute.’

⁹ “Those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they didn’t understand the voice of him who spoke to me.

¹⁰ I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ The Lord said to me, ‘Arise, and go into Damascus. There you will be told about all things which are appointed for you to do.’

¹¹ When I couldn’t see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.

¹² “One Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the Jews who lived in Damascus,

¹³ came to me, and standing by me said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ In that very hour I looked up at him.

¹⁴ He said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.

³ “I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict tradition of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as you all are today.

⁴ I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women,

⁵ as also the high priest and all the council of the elders testify, from whom also I received letters to the brothers, and traveled to Damascus to bring them also who were there to Jerusalem in bonds to be punished.

⁶ “As I made my journey and came close to Damascus, about noon suddenly a great light shone around me from the sky.

⁷ I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’

⁸ I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute.’

⁹ “Those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they didn’t understand the voice of him who spoke to me.

¹⁰ I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ The Lord said to me, ‘Arise, and go into Damascus. There you will be told about all things which are appointed for you to do.’

¹¹ When I couldn’t see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.

¹² “One Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the Jews who lived in Damascus,

¹³ came to me, and standing by me said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ In that very hour I looked up at him.

¹⁴ He said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.

³ “I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict tradition of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as you all are today.

⁵ as also the high priest and all the council of the elders testify, from whom also I received letters to the brothers, and travelled to Damascus to bring them also who were there to Jerusalem in bonds to be punished.

⁶ “As I made my journey and came close to Damascus, about noon suddenly a great light shone around me from the sky.

⁷ I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’

⁸ I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute.’

⁹ “Those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they didn’t understand the voice of him who spoke to me.

¹⁰ I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ The Lord said to me, ‘Arise, and go into Damascus. There you will be told about all things which are appointed for you to do.’

¹¹ When I couldn’t see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.

¹² “One Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the Jews who lived in Damascus,

¹³ came to me, and standing by me said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ In that very hour I looked up at him.

¹⁴ He said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.

³ I am a Jew of Tarsus in Cilicia by birth, but I had my education in this town at the feet of Gamaliel, being trained in the keeping of every detail of the law of our fathers; given up to the cause of God with all my heart, as you are today.

⁴ And I made attacks on this Way, even to death, taking men and women and putting them in prison.

⁵ Of which the high priest will be a witness, and all the rulers, from whom I had letters to the brothers; and I went into Damascus, to take those who were there as prisoners to Jerusalem for punishment.

⁶ And it came about that while I was on my journey, coming near to Damascus, about the middle of the day, suddenly I saw a great light from heaven shining round me.

⁷ And when I went down on the earth, a voice came to my ears saying to me, Saul, Saul, why are you attacking me so cruelly?

⁸ And I, answering, said, Who are you; Lord? And he said to me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are attacking.

⁹ And those who were with me saw the light, but the voice of him who was talking to me came not to their ears.

¹⁰ And I said, What have I to do, Lord? And the Lord said to me, Get up, and go into Damascus; and it will be made clear to you what you have to do.

¹¹ And because I was unable to see because of the glory of that light, those who were with me took me by the hand, and so I came to Damascus.

¹² And one Ananias, a God-fearing man, who kept the law, and of whom all the Jews in that place had a high opinion,

¹³ Came to my side and said, Brother Saul, let your eyes be open. And in that very hour I was able to see him.

¹⁴ And he said, You have been marked out by the God of our fathers to have knowledge of his purpose, and to see the Upright One and to give ear to the words of his mouth.

³ I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city, at the feet of Gamaliel, educated according to the exactness of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, as ye are all this day;

⁴ who have persecuted this way unto death, binding and delivering up to prisons both men and women;

⁵ as also the high priest bears me witness, and all the elderhood: from whom also, having received letters to the brethren, I went to Damascus to bring those also who were there, bound, to Jerusalem, to be punished.

⁶ And it came to pass, as I was journeying and drawing near to Damascus, that, about mid-day, there suddenly shone out of heaven a great light round about me.

⁷ And I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

⁸ And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said to me, I am Jesus the Nazaraean, whom thou persecutest.

⁹ But they that were with me beheld the light, and were filled with fear, but heard not the voice of him that was speaking to me.

¹⁰ And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said to me, Rise up, and go to Damascus, and there it shall be told thee of all things which it is appointed thee to do.

¹¹ And as I could not see, through the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came to Damascus.

¹² And a certain Ananias, a pious man according to the law, borne witness to by all the Jews who dwelt there,

¹³ coming to me and standing by me, said to me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And I, in the same hour, received my sight and saw him.

¹⁴ And he said, The God of our fathers has chosen thee beforehand to know his will, and to see the just one, and to hear a voice out of his mouth;

³ And he saith: I am a Jew, born at Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city, at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the truth of the law of the fathers, zealous for the law, as also all you are this day:

⁴ Who persecuted this way unto death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

⁵ As the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the ancients: from whom also receiving letters to the brethren, I went to Damascus, that I might bring them bound from thence to Jerusalem to be punished.

⁶ And it came to pass, as I was going, and drawing nigh to Damascus at midday, that suddenly from heaven there shone round about me a great light:

⁷ And falling on the ground, I heard a voice saying to me: Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

⁸ And I answered: Who art thou, Lord? And he said to me: I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.

⁹ And they that were with me, saw indeed the light, but they heard not the voice of him that spoke with me.

¹⁰ And I said: What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said to me: Arise, and go to Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things that thou must do.

¹¹ And whereas I did not see for the brightness of that light, being led by the hand by my companions, I came to Damascus.

¹² And one Ananias, a man according to the law, having testimony of all the Jews who dwelt there,

¹³ Coming to me, and standing by me, said to me: Brother Saul, look up. And I the same hour looked upon him.

¹⁴ But he said: The God of our fathers hath preordained thee that thou shouldst know his will, and see the Just One, and shouldst hear the voice from his mouth.

³ “I am indeed a Jew, having been born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but having been brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, having been educated according to the exactness of the law of our forefathers, being zealous for God just as you all are today.

⁴ I, who persecuted this Way to the death, binding and handing over to prisons both men and women,

⁵ as also the high priest testifies of me, along with the council of the elders, from whom I also received letters to the brothers, and went to Damascus in order to bring those who were there, having been bound, to Jerusalem, that they might be punished.

⁶ “Now it happened, as I was going and approaching Damascus, about midday, suddenly from heaven a great light shone about me.

⁷ And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’

⁸ So I answered, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said to me, ‘I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom you are persecuting.’

⁹ “And those who were with me observed the light and became terrified, but they did not hear the voice of the One speaking to me.

¹⁰ So I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ And the Lord said to me, ‘Arise and go into Damascus, and it will be told to you about all the things which it has been appointed for you to do.’

¹¹ And since I could not see because of the brightness of that light, being led by the hand by those who were with me, I came into Damascus.

¹² “And Ananias, a certain devout man according to the law, being testified of by all the Jews dwelling in Damascus,

¹³ came to me and he stood and said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight.’ And I, in that very hour, looked up at him.

¹⁴ And he said, ‘The God of our fathers has chosen you to know His will, and to see the Righteous One, and hear the voice from His mouth.

³ “I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, educated strictly according to the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, just as you all are today.

⁴ I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women,

⁵ as also the high priest and all the council of elders can bear me witness. I even obtained letters from them to the brothers in Damascus, to bring those also who were there bound to Jerusalem to be punished.

⁶ Now it happened, as I was going and approaching Damascus, about noon, suddenly a strong light from heaven shone around me.

⁷ I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’

⁸ So I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ He said to me, ‘I am Jesus the Natsorean, whom you are persecuting.’

⁹ Those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they did not understand the voice of the One speaking to me.

¹⁰ So I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ And the Lord said to me, ‘Get up and go into Damascus, and there you will be told about all that has been appointed to you to do.’

¹¹ And since I could not see, because of the brightness of that light, I entered Damascus being led by the hand of those who were with me.

¹² Then a certain Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well spoken of by all the Jews who lived in Damascus,

¹³ came to me, and standing by me said, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ And at that very moment I looked up at him.

¹⁴ Then he said: ‘The God of our fathers has chosen you to know His will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear words from His mouth.

³ “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia,” he began. “However, I was brought up here in this city, and sat at the feet of Gamaliel. I was taught to strictly observe the law of our fathers. I was zealous for God, just like all of you here today,

⁴ and I persecuted the people of this Way—having them put to death, and imprisoning both men and women.

⁵ As the high priest and the council of the elders can also verify, I received from them letters of authorization addressed to the Jewish brothers in Damascus, and went there to arrest these people and bring them as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished.

⁶ At around noon, while I was on my way and approaching Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven shone all around me.

⁷ I fell to the ground, and I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’

⁸ ‘Who are you, Lord?’ I answered. ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, the one you are persecuting,’ he told me.

⁹ Those who were traveling with me did see the light, but they didn't hear the voice that spoke to me.

¹⁰ ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ I asked. The Lord told me, ‘Get up and go into Damascus, and there you'll be told everything that's arranged for you to do.’

¹¹ Since I couldn't see because of the brightness of the light, those who were with me led me by the hand into Damascus.

¹² There a man called Ananias came to see me. He was a religious man who observed the law, and was highly respected by the Jews who lived in the town.

¹³ He stood in front of me and said, ‘Brother Saul, receive back your sight.’ At that very moment I could see again, and I looked at him.

¹⁴ He told me, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, to see the one who is truly good and right, and to listen to what he has to say to you.

³ I am verely a man, which am a Iew, borne in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought vp in this citie at the feete of Gamaliel, and instructed according to the perfect maner of the Lawe of the Fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.

⁴ And I persecuted this way vnto the death, binding and deliuering into prison both men and women.

⁵ As also ye chiefe Priest doeth beare me witnes, and al the company of the Elders: of whom also I receiued letters vnto the brethren, and went to Damascus to bring them which were there, bound vnto Hierusalem, that they might be punished.

⁶ And so it was, as I iourneyed and was come neere vnto Damascus about noone, that suddenly there shone from heauen a great light round about me.

⁷ So I fell vnto the earth, and heard a voyce, saying vnto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou mee?

⁸ Then I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said to me, I am Iesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.

⁹ Moreouer they that were with me, sawe in deede a light and were afraide: but they heard not the voyce of him that spake vnto me.

¹⁰ Then I sayd, What shall I doe, Lord? And the Lord sayde vnto me, Arise, and goe into Damascus: and there it shall be tolde thee of all things, which are appointed for thee to doe.

¹¹ So when I could not see for the glory of that light, I was led by the hand of them that were with me, and came into Damascus.

¹² And one Ananias a godly man, as perteining to the Lawe, hauing good report of all the Iewes which dwelt there,

¹³ Came vnto me, and stoode, and sayd vnto me, Brother Saul, receiue thy sight: and that same houre I looked vpon him.

¹⁴ And he sayd, The God of our fathers hath appointed thee, that thou shouldest knowe his wil, and shouldest see that Iust one, and shouldest heare the voyce of his mouth.

⁵ as also the high-priest beareth me witness, and all the elderhood; from whom I received letters to the brethren, and was on my way to Damascus to bring those also that were there, bound, to Jerusalem, that they might be punished.

⁶ But it came to pass, as I was on my way, and approaching Damascus, that about noon there suddenly shone around me a great light from heaven;

⁷ and I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why dost thou persecute me?

⁸ And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said to me, I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom thou persecutest.

⁹ And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but the voice of him that spoke to me they did not hear.

¹⁰ And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said to me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there thou wilt be told of all which it hath been appointed thee to do.

¹¹ And as I could not see by reason of the brightness of that light, I was led by the hand of those that were with me, and came into Damascus.

¹² But one Ananias, a devout man according to the Law, well spoken of by all the Jews who dwelt there,

¹³ came to me, and standing over me said, Brother Saul, receive sight. And I immediately looked up upon him.

¹⁴ And he said, The God of our fathers chose thee to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth;

³ “I am a Jew, from Tarsus in Cilicia, but I was brought up in this city under the teaching of Gamaliel, and educated in accordance with the strict system of our ancestral Law. I was as zealous in God's service as any of you who are here today.

⁴ In my persecution of this Way I did not stop even at the taking of life. I put in chains, and imprisoned, men and women alike —

⁵ And to that the high priest himself and all the council of elders can testify. For I had letters of introduction from them to our fellow Jews at Damascus, and I was on my way to that place, to bring those whom I might find there prisoners to Jerusalem for punishment.

⁶ While I was still on my way, just as I was getting close to Damascus, about midday, suddenly there flashed from the heavens a great light all around me.

⁷ I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’

⁸ ‘Who are you, Lord?’ I replied. Then the voice said ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth whom you are persecuting.’

⁹ The men with me saw the light, but did not hear the speaker's voice.

¹⁰ Then I said ‘What am I to do, Lord?’ ‘Get up and go into Damascus,’ The Lord said to me, ‘and there you will be told all that you have been appointed to do.’

¹¹ In consequence of that dazzling light I could not see, but my companions held me by the hand, until I reached Damascus.

¹² There a man named Ananias, a strict observer of our Law, well spoken of by all the Jewish inhabitants, came to see me.

¹³ Standing close to me, he said ‘Saul, my brother, recover your sight.’ And then and there I recovered my sight and looked up at him.

¹⁴ Then he said ‘The God of our ancestors has appointed you to learn his will, and to see the righteous one, and to hear words from his lips;

³ “I am a Jew, just like you. I was born in Tarsus, in Cilicia country, but I grew up here in Jerusalem. I was a young man here, and I learned all our laws. You know that really good teacher called Gamaliel? Well, he taught me all the laws that Moses gave to our grand-fathers. And I wanted to always do everything God says, so I never broke any of those laws. I’m sure that all you mob properly follow those laws too.

⁴ And I used to hurt anyone that followed Jesus, the people called the Jesus Way mob. Whenever I found them I grabbed them and put them in jail. I did that to men and to women too. I wanted to kill those people.

⁵ The big boss of our Jewish ceremonies knows this, and so do the other men that belong to our Jewish council. They gave me letters to take to our Jewish brothers in Damascus. Those letters said I could grab the Christians there, and tie them up, and bring them to Jerusalem, and our leaders here will punish them. So I got some other men to join me and we were going along the road to Damascus.

⁶ We were getting close to Damascus, about the middle of the day, then suddenly a bright light from the sky shone all around me.

⁷ The light was so bright that I fell down to the ground. Then I heard the voice of somebody talking to me from the sky. He said, ‘Saul. Saul. Why are you making trouble for me and hurting me?’

⁸ I asked him, ‘Who are you, boss?’ He said, ‘I am Jesus, from Nazareth. You are making trouble for me and hurting me.’

⁹ The men that were with me saw that very bright light, and they heard that voice, but they didn’t understand anything the voice said to me.

¹⁰ Then I said, ‘What do you want me to do, boss?’ That boss said, ‘Get up and go into Damascus. A man there will tell you everything that I want you to do.’

¹¹ That light was so bright it made me blind. I could not see, so the men with me held my hand and took me into Damascus.

¹² A man called Ananias lived in that town. He respected God, and he properly followed our Jewish laws. All the Jews living in Damascus said he was a good man.

¹³ He came to me and stood beside me, and he said to me, ‘My friend Saul, you can see again now.’ Then I could see again. I looked up and saw him standing there beside me.

¹⁴ Then he said, ‘The God that we respect, and the one our grand-fathers respected, he picked you, and he will show you everything he wants you to do. You will see that properly good man, and you will hear him talking to you.

³ I am verely aman which am a Iewe borne in Tharsus a cite in Cicill: neverthelesse yet brought vp in this cite at the fete of Gamaliel and informed diligently in the lawe of the fathers and was fervent mynded to Godwarde as ye all are this same daye

⁴ and I persecuted this waye vnto the deeth byndynge and delyveringe into preson bothe men and wemen

⁵ as the chefe prest doth beare me witnes and all the elders: of whom also I receaved letters vnto the brethren and wet to Damasco to bringe them which were there bounde vnto Ierusalem for to be punysshed.

⁶ And it fortuned as I made my iorney and was come nye vnto Damasco aboute none that sodenly ther shone from heaven a greate lyght rounde aboute me

⁷ and I fell vnto the erth and hearde a voyce sayinge vnto me: Saul Saul why persecutest thou me?

⁸ And I answered: what arte thou Lorde? And he sayd vnto me: I am Iesus of Nazareth whom thou persecutest.

⁹ And they that were with me sawe verely a lyght and were a frayde: but they hearde not the voyce of him that spake with me.

¹⁰ And I sayde: what shall I do Lorde? And the Lorde sayde vnto me: Aryse and goo into Damasco and there it shalbe tolde the of all thinges which are apoynted for the to do.

¹¹ And when I sawe nothynge for the brightnes of that light I was ledde by the honde of them that were with me and came into Damasco.

¹² And one Ananias a perfect man and as pertayninge to the lawe havinge good reporte of all the Iewes which there dwelt

¹³ came vnto me and stode and sayd vnto me: Brother Saul loke vp. And that same houre I receaved my sight and sawe him.

¹⁴ And he sayde the God of oure fathers hath ordeyned the before that thou shuldest knowe his will and shuldest se that which is rightfull and shuldest heare the voyce of his mouth:

³ “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but educated in this city at the feet of Gamaliel. I was instructed according to the strict ways of the law of our fathers. I am zealous for God, just as all of you are today.

⁴ I persecuted this Way to the death, binding up and delivering them to prison both men and women,

⁵ as the high priest and all the elders can bear witness. I received letters from them for the brothers in Damascus, and went there to bring them back in bonds to Jerusalem in order for them to be punished.

⁶ It happened that when I was traveling and nearing Damascus, about noon suddenly a great light from heaven began to shine around me.

⁷ I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?'

⁸ I answered, 'Who are you, Lord?' He said to me, 'I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.'

⁹ Those who were with me saw the light, but they did not understand the voice of him who spoke to me.

¹⁰ I said, 'What should I do, Lord?' The Lord said to me, 'Arise and go into Damascus; there you will be told everything that you must do.'

¹¹ I could not see because of that light's brightness, and being led by the hands of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.

¹² There I met a man named Ananias, a devout man according to the law and well spoken of by all the Jews who lived there.

¹³ He came to me, stood by me, and said, 'Brother Saul, receive your sight.' In that very hour I saw him.

⁵ as also the high priest and all the council of the elders testify, from whom also I received letters to the brothers, and traveled to Damascus to bring them also who were there to Jerusalem in bonds to be punished.

⁶ “As I made my journey and came close to Damascus, about noon suddenly a great light shone around me from the sky.

⁷ I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’

⁸ I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute.’

⁹ “Those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they didn’t understand the voice of him who spoke to me.

⁴ And I persecuted this way even to death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

⁵ As also the high priest doth bear me testimony, and all the estate of the elders; from whom also I received letters to the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them who were there bound to Jerusalem, to be punished.

⁶ And it came to pass, that as I was passing on my journey, and had come nigh to Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light around me.

⁷ And I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

⁸ And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said to me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.

⁹ And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spoke to me.

¹⁰ And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said to me, Arise, and go into Damascus, and there it shall be told thee concerning all things which are appointed for thee to do.

¹¹ And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.

¹³ Came to me, and stood, and said to me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.

¹⁴ And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldst know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldst hear the voice of his mouth.

³ “I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict tradition of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as you all are today.

⁵ as the prince of priests yieldeth witnessing to me, and all the greatest of birth or the more in birth. Of whom also I took epistles to brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring from thence men bound into Jerusalem, that they should be pained.

⁶ And it was done, while I went, and nighed to Damascus, at midday suddenly from heaven a great plenty of light or a copious light shone about me.

⁷ And I felled down to the earth, and heard a voice from heaven, saying to me, Saul, Saul, what persecutest or pursuest thou me? It is hard to or for thee, to kick against the prick.

⁸ And I answered, Who art thou Lord? And he said to me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest or pursuest.

⁹ And they that were with me saw but the light, but they heard not the voice of him, that spake with me.

¹⁰ And I said, Lord, what shall I do? And the Lord said to me, Rise thou, and go to Damascus; and there it shall be said to thee, of all things which it behooveth thee to do.

¹¹ And when I saw not, for the clarity of that light, I was led by the hand of fellows, and I came to Damascus.

¹² And a man, Ananias, that by the law had witnessing of all Jews dwelling in Damascus,

¹³ came to me, and stood nigh, and said to me, Saul, brother, behold. And I in the same hour beheld into him.

¹⁴ And he said, God of our fathers hath before-ordained thee, that thou shouldest know the will of him, and shouldest see the rightful man, that is, just Christ, and hear the voice of his mouth.

³ I am a man a Jew, born at Tarsus of Cilicia, nourished and in this city beside the feet of Gamaliel or nourished forsooth in this city beside the feet of Gamaliel, taught by the truth of (our) fathers’ law, a lover or a follower of the law (or an ardent follower of the Law), as also ye all be today.

⁴ And I pursued this way till to the death, binding together and betaking into holds men and women, (And I persecuted the followers of this way unto the death, taking them captive, and delivering them to prison, yea, both men and women,)

⁵ as the prince of priests yieldeth witnessing to me, and all the greatest of birth or and all the more in birth. Of whom also I took epistles to (the) brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring from thence men bound into Jerusalem, that they should be pained. (as the High Priest, and all the greatest of birth, or the elders, have testified about me. And from whom I took letters to the brothers, and went to Damascus, to bring back to Jerusalem from there men in bondage, so that they could be punished.)

⁶ And it was done, while I went, and nighed to Damascus (or and approached to Damascus), at midday suddenly from heaven a great plenty of light or a copious light shone about me.

⁷ And I felled down to the earth, and heard a voice from heaven, saying to me, Saul, Saul, what pursuest thou me? It is hard to thee, to kick against the prick, +or It is hard for thee, to kick against the prick. (And I fell down to the ground, and heard a voice from heaven, saying to me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? It is hard for thee, to kick against the prod.)

⁸ And I answered, Who art thou Lord? And he said to me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou pursuest, (or I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest).

⁹ And they that were with me saw but the light, but they heard not the voice of him, that spake with me, (or but they did not hear the voice of him, who spoke with me).

¹⁰ And I said, Lord, what shall I do? And the Lord said to me, Rise thou, and go to Damascus; and there it shall be said to thee, of all (the) things which it behooveth thee to do.

¹¹ And when I saw not, for the clarity of that light, I was led by the hand of fellows, and I came to Damascus. (And when I saw not, because of the brightness of that light, I was led by the hands of my fellows, and I came to Damascus.)

¹² And a man, Ananias, that by the law had (the) witnessing of all (the) Jews dwelling in Damascus, (And a man, Ananias, who lived by the Law, and received good testimony from all the Jews living in Damascus,)

¹³ came to me, and stood nigh, and said to me, Saul, brother, behold. And I in the same hour beheld into him (or And at that very moment I saw him).

¹⁴ And he said, (The) God of our fathers hath before-ordained thee, that thou shouldest know the will of him, and shouldest see the rightful man, that is, (the) just Christ, and hear the voice of his mouth.

³ 'I, indeed, am a man, a Jew, having been born in Tarsus of Cilicia, and brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, having been taught according to the exactitude of a law of the fathers, being zealous of God, as all ye are to-day.

⁴ 'And this way I persecuted unto death, binding and delivering up to prisons both men and women,

⁵ as also the chief priest doth testify to me, and all the eldership; from whom also having received letters unto the brethren, to Damascus, I was going on, to bring also those there bound to Jerusalem that they might be punished,

⁶ and it came to pass, in my going on and coming nigh to Damascus, about noon, suddenly out of the heaven there shone a great light round about me,

⁷ I fell also to the ground, and I heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why me dost thou persecute?

⁸ 'And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? and he said unto me, I am Jesus the Nazarene whom thou dost persecute —

⁹ and they who are with me the light did see, and became afraid, and the voice they heard not of him who is speaking to me —

¹⁰ and I said, What shall I do, Lord? and the Lord said unto me, Having risen, go on to Damascus, and there it shall be told thee concerning all things that have been appointed for thee to do.

¹¹ 'And when I did not see from the glory of that light, being led by the hand by those who are with me, I came to Damascus,

¹² and a certain one, Ananias, a pious man according to the law, being testified to by all the Jews dwelling there,

¹³ having come unto me and stood by me, said to me, Saul, brother, look up; and I the same hour did look up to him;

¹⁴ and he said, The God of our fathers did choose thee beforehand to know His will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice out of his mouth,
