¹ The former treatise I made, O Theophilus, concerning all that Jesus began both to do and to teach,

² until the day in which he was received up, after that he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit unto the apostles whom he had chosen:

³ to whom he also showed himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing unto them by the space of forty days, and speaking the things concerning the kingdom of God:

⁴ and, being assembled together with them, he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, said he, ye heard from me:

⁵ for John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days hence.

⁶ They therefore, when they were come together, asked him, saying, Lord, dost thou at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?

¹ Dear Theophilus, In my first book that I wrote for you, I wrote about many of the things that Jesus did and taught

² until the day on which he was taken { God took him} up to heaven. Before he went to heaven, saying what the Holy Spirit told him, he told the apostles whom he had chosen the things that he wanted them to know.

³ After he had suffered and died on the cross, he became alive again. As he appeared to them often during the next forty days, the apostles saw him many times. He proved to them in many ways that he was alive again. He talked with them about how God would rule MET the lives of people who accepted him as their king.

⁴ One time while he was with them, he told them, “Do not leave Jerusalem yet. Instead, wait here until my Father sends his Spirit MTY to you, as he promised to do. You have heard me speak to you about that.

⁵ John baptized people in water because they said that they wanted to change their lives, but after a few days LIT God will put the Holy Spirit within you(pl) to truly change your lives.”

⁶ One day when the apostles met together with Jesus, they asked him, “Lord, will you (sg) now become the King MET over us Israelite people like King David, who ruled long ago?” (OR, “Lord, will you (sg) now defeat the Romans and restore the kingdom to us Israelite people?”)

³ And to whom he gave clear and certain signs that he was living, after his death; for he was seen by them for forty days, and gave them teaching about the kingdom of God:

⁴ And when they were all together, with him, he gave them orders not to go away from Jerusalem, but to keep there, waiting till the word of the Father was put into effect, of which, he said, I have given you knowledge:

⁵ For the baptism of John was with water, but you will have baptism with the Holy Spirit, after a little time.

⁶ So, when they were together, they said to him, Lord, will you at this time give back the kingdom to Israel?

⁶ They therefore who were come together, asked him, saying: Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

⁴ And being together He directed them not to go away from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, “which you heard from me;

⁵ John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

⁶ Well then, being together they asked Him saying, “Lord, are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel at this time?”

¹ Dear Theophilus, in my previous book I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning

² until the day he was taken up to heaven. This was after he'd given instructions through the Holy Spirit to his chosen apostles.

³ Over the course of forty days after the death he suffered, he showed himself to them, proving that he was alive with convincing evidence. He appeared to them, and told them about the kingdom of God.

⁴ While he was still with them he instructed them, “Do not leave Jerusalem. Wait to receive what the Father promised, just as you heard it from me.

⁵ It's true that John baptized with water, but in just a few days' time you will be baptized by the Holy Spirit.”

⁶ So when the disciples met with Jesus, they asked him, “Lord, is this the time when you will re-establish Israel's kingdom?”

² Vntill the day that hee was taken vp, after that hee through the holy Ghost, had giuen commandements vnto the Apostles, whome hee had chosen:

³ To whome also he presented himselfe aliue after that he had suffered, by many infallible tokens, being seene of them by the space of fourtie daies, and speaking of those thinges which appertaine to the kingdome of God.

⁴ And when he had gathered them together, he commanded them, that they should not depart from Hierusalem, but to waite for the promise of the Father, which sayde hee, yee haue heard of me.

⁵ For Iohn in deede baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the holy Ghost within these fewe daies.

⁶ When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore the kingdome to Israel?

¹ Dear Theophilus I wrote to you before about all the things Jesus did and the things he taught to people.

² He kept doing these things until God took him up to heaven. But before God took Jesus up to heaven the Holy Spirit helped Jesus tell his close followers the things they had to do.

³ It is like this, Jesus died, and then he came alive again, and his followers saw him a lot of times in the next 40 days. Jesus showed them that he really was alive, so they are really sure that this is true. He talked to them too, and told them a lot of things about God’s family.

⁴ At one time Jesus was eating some food with his followers and he said to them, “Don’t leave this city called Jerusalem yet. I already told you that my Father promised to give you the Holy Spirit. Well, wait here until God does that.

⁵ Do you remember John the Baptiser? He baptised people with water, but God will baptise you with the Holy Spirit very soon.”

⁶ After that some of the close followers of Jesus met together with him. (At that time the Roman government people were the bosses over the Israel people.) The followers asked Jesus, “Sir, are you going to fight the Romans at this time and beat them, and give us back our own country, Israel, with our own boss?”

⁴ and gaddered them togeder and commaunded the that they shuld not departe from Ierusalem: but to wayte for the promys of the father whereof ye have herde of me.

⁵ For Iohn baptised with water: but ye shalbe baptised with the holy goost and that with in this feawe dayes.

⁶ When they were come togeder they axed of him sayinge: Lorde wilt thou at this tyme restore agayne the kyngdome to Israel?

⁶ They, therefore, indeed, having come together, were questioning him, saying, 'Lord, dost thou at this time restore the reign to Israel?'
