Acts 16:36-38 in English

³⁶ And the jailor reported the words to Paul, saying, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore come forth, and go in peace.

³⁷ But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men that are Romans, and have cast us into prison; and do they now cast us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and bring us out.

³⁸ And the serjeants reported these words unto the magistrates: and they feared when they heard that they were Romans;

³⁶ And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace.

³⁷ But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out.

³⁸ And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans.

³⁶ And the jailor reported the words to Paul, saying, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore come forth, and go in peace.

³⁷ But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men that are Romans, and have cast us into prison; and do they now cast us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and bring us out.

³⁸ And the serjeants reported these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans;

³⁶ After the officers went and told that to the jailer, he went and told Paul, “The Roman authorities have sent a message (sg) saying that I should release you (sg) and Silas from prison. So you two can leave the jail now. Now you can go peacefully!”

³⁷ But Paul said to the police officers, “The authorities commanded men to beat us in front of a crowd before those authorities had learned if we (exc) had done anything wrong! Then they ordered men to shove us into jail! But that was not legal, because we (exc) are Roman citizens! And now they want RHQ to send us away secretly! We will not accept that! Those Roman officials must come themselves and tell us that they are sorry, and take us out of jail.”

³⁸ So the police officers went and told the city authorities what Paul had said. When those authorities heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were afraid that someone would report to more important officials what they had done, and as a result they would be punished { those officials would punish them}.

³⁶ The jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go; now therefore come out and go in peace.”

³⁷ But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us publicly without a trial, men who are Romans, and have cast us into prison! Do they now release us secretly? No, most certainly, but let them come themselves and bring us out!”

³⁸ The sergeants reported these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans,

³⁶ The jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go; now therefore come out and go in peace.”

³⁷ But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us publicly without a trial, men who are Romans, and have cast us into prison! Do they now release us secretly? No, most certainly, but let them come themselves and bring us out!”

³⁸ The sergeants reported these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans,

³⁶ The jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go; now therefore come out and go in peace.”

³⁷ But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us publicly without a trial, men who are Romans, and have cast us into prison! Do they now release us secretly? No, most certainly, but let them come themselves and bring us out!”

³⁶ And the keeper said to Paul, The authorities have given orders to let you go: come out now, and go in peace.

³⁷ But Paul said to them, They have given us who are Romans a public whipping without judging us, and have put us in prison. Will they now send us out secretly? no, truly, let them come themselves and take us out.

³⁸ And the police gave an account of these words to the authorities, and they were full of fear on hearing that they were Romans;

³⁶ And the jailor reported these words to Paul: The praetors have sent that ye may be let go. Now therefore go out and depart in peace.

³⁷ But Paul said to them, Having beaten us publicly uncondemned, us who are Romans, they have cast us into prison, and now they thrust us out secretly? no, indeed, but let them come themselves and bring us out.

³⁸ And the lictors reported these words to the praetors. And they were afraid when they heard they were Romans.

³⁶ And the keeper of the prison told these words to Paul: The magistrates have sent to let you go; now therefore depart, and go in peace.

³⁷ But Paul said to them: They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men that are Romans, and have cast us into prison: and now do they thrust us out privately? Not so; but let them come,

³⁸ And let us out themselves. And the serjeants told these words to the magistrates. And they were afraid, hearing that they were Romans.

³⁶ And the prison keeper told these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent so that you may be released. Now therefore depart, and go in peace.”

³⁷ But Paul said to them, “They beat us publicly, although we were uncondemned Romans, and they cast us into prison, and now do they cast us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and lead us out.”

³⁸ And the officers related to the magistrates these words, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans.

³⁶ So the jailer reported these words to Paul, “The magistrates have sent to release you; so now you can leave and go in peace.”

³⁷ But Paul said to them: “After severely beating us in public, although we were uncondemned Romans, they threw us into prison, and now do they toss us out on the sly? No way! Rather, let them come themselves and escort us out!”

³⁸ So the officers reported these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans;

³⁶ The jailer told Paul, “The magistrates have sent word to release you. So you can leave, and go in peace.”

³⁷ But Paul told them, “They publicly beat us without a trial—and yet we're Roman citizens! Then they threw us in prison. Now they want to quietly let us go? No, they should come themselves and release us!”

³⁸ The officials went back and reported this to the magistrates. When they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens they were really worried,

³⁶ Then the keeper of the prison tolde these woordes vnto Paul, saying, The gouerness haue sent to loose you: nowe therefore get you hence, and goe in peace.

³⁷ Then sayde Paul vnto them, After that they haue beaten vs openly vncodemned, which are Romanes, they haue cast vs into prison, and nowe would they put vs out priuily? nay verely: but let them come and bring vs out.

³⁸ And the sergeants tolde these woordes vnto the gouernours, who feared whe they heard that they were Romanes.

³⁶ And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace.

³⁶ The jailer told Paul of his instructions. “The Magistrates have sent an order for your discharge,” he said, “so you had better leave the place at once and go quietly away.”

³⁷ But Paul's answer to them was, “They have flogged us in public without trial, though we are Roman citizens, and they have put us in prison, and now they are for sending us out secretly! No, indeed! Let them come and take us out themselves.”

³⁸ The police reported his words to the Magistrates, who, on hearing that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, were alarmed,

³⁶ The jailer told Paul of his instructions. “The Magistrates have sent an order for your discharge,” he said, “so you had better leave the place at once and go quietly away.”

³⁷ But Paul's answer to them was, “They have flogged us in public without trial, though we are Roman citizens, and they have put us in prison, and now they are for sending us out secretly! No, indeed! Let them come and take us out themselves.”

³⁸ The police reported his words to the Magistrates, who, on hearing that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, were alarmed,

³⁶ So the jail boss told Paul, “The town bosses have sent a message telling me to let you and Silas go free. So you can go quietly out of the jail now.”

³⁷ But Paul said to them, “No. Yesterday those bosses didn’t take us to court to find out if we did anything wrong, or not. They just told men to hit us in front of the crowd. Then they put us in jail. But, you see, we are Jews, but we are Romans too. Our names are in the books in the Roman offices. So those bosses broke the Roman law yesterday. And now they want to send us away while nobody is looking. No way. Those Roman bosses have to get up and come to us and tell us that they are sorry, and take us out of this jail.”

³⁸ So the policemen went and told Paul’s words to the town bosses. As soon as those bosses heard that Paul and Silas were not just Jews, but they were Romans too, they got frightened. Those bosses knew they broke the Roman law.

³⁶ The keper of the preson tolde this sayinge to Paul the officiers have sent worde to lowse you. Now therfore get you hence and goo in peace.

³⁷ Then sayde Paul vnto them: they have beaten vs openly vncomdempned for all that we are Romayns and have cast vs into preson: and now wolde they sende vs awaye prevely? Naye not so but let them come the selves and set vs out.

³⁸ When the ministres tolde these wordes vnto the officers they feared when they hearde that they were Romayns

³⁶ The jailer reported the words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent word to me to let you go. Now therefore come out, and go in peace.”

³⁷ But Paul said to them, “They have publicly beaten us without a trial, even through we are Romans citizens—and they threw us into prison. Do they now want to send us away secretly? No! Let them come themselves and lead us out.”

³⁸ The guards reported these words to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Romans, they were afraid.

³⁶ The jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go; now therefore come out and go in peace.”

³⁷ But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us publicly without a trial, men who are Romans, and have cast us into prison! Do they now release us secretly? No, most certainly, but let them come themselves and bring us out!”

³⁶ And the keeper of the prison told these words to Paul, That the magistrates have sent, that ye be delivered; now therefore go ye out, and go ye in peace.

³⁷ And Paul said to them, They sent us men of Rome into prison, that were beaten openly and uncondemned, and now privily they bring us out; not so, but come they themselves, and deliver us out.

³⁸ And the constables told these words to the magistrates; and they dreaded, for they heard that they were Romans.

³⁶ And the keeper of the prison told these words to Paul, That the magistrates have sent, that ye be delivered; now therefore go ye out, and go ye in peace. (And the warden of the prison said to Paul, The magistrates have sent word, that ye should be released; and so now go out, and go thy way in peace.)

³⁷ And Paul said to them, They sent us men of Rome into prison, that were beaten openly and uncondemned, and now privily they bring us out; not so (fast), but come they themselves, and deliver us out, (or no! let them come here themselves, and release us).

³⁸ And the constables told these words to the magistrates; and they dreaded, for they heard that they were Romans, (or and they had great fear, when they learned that they were Romans).

³⁶ and the jailor told these words unto Paul — 'The magistrates have sent, that ye may be let go; now, therefore, having gone forth go on in peace;'

³⁷ and Paul said to them, 'Having beaten us publicly uncondemned — men, Romans being — they did cast us to prison, and now privately do they cast us forth! why no! but having come themselves, let them bring us forth.'

³⁸ And the rod-bearers told to the magistrates these sayings, and they were afraid, having heard that they are Romans,
