¹⁰ And when he had seen the vision, straightway we sought to go forth into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel unto them.

¹¹ Setting sail therefore from Troas, we made a straight course to Samothrace, and the day following to Neapolis;

¹² and from thence to Philippi, which is a city of Macedonia, the first of the district, a Roman colony: and we were in this city tarrying certain days.

¹³ And on the sabbath day we went forth without the gate by a river side, where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down, and spake unto the women that were come together.

¹⁴ And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, one that worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened to give heed unto the things which were spoken by Paul.

¹⁵ And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

¹⁶ And it came to pass, as we were going to the place of prayer, that a certain maid having a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much gain by soothsaying.

¹⁷ The same following after Paul and us cried out, saying, These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim unto you the way of salvation.

¹⁸ And this she did for many days. But Paul, being sore troubled, turned and said to the spirit, I charge thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And it came out that very hour.

¹⁹ But when her masters saw that the hope of their gain was gone, they laid hold on Paul and Silas, and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers,

²⁰ and when they had brought them unto the magistrates, they said, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,

²¹ and set forth customs which it is not lawful for us to receive, or to observe, being Romans.

²² And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent their garments off them, and commanded to beat them with rods.

²³ And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:

²⁴ who, having received such a charge, cast them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

²⁵ But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns unto God, and the prisoners were listening to them;

²⁶ and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison-house were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened; and every one’s bands were loosed.

²⁷ And the jailor, being roused out of sleep and seeing the prison doors open, drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.

²⁸ But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.

²⁹ And he called for lights and sprang in, and, trembling for fear, fell down before Paul and Silas,

³⁰ and brought them out and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

³¹ And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be saved, thou and thy house.

¹⁰ And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.

¹¹ Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis;

¹² And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days.

¹³ And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.

¹⁴ And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.

¹⁵ And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

¹⁶ And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:

¹⁷ The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.

¹⁸ And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

¹⁹ And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers,

²⁰ And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,

²¹ And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.

²² And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them.

²³ And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:

²⁴ Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

²⁵ And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

²⁶ And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.

²⁷ And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.

²⁸ But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.

²⁹ Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,

³⁰ And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

³¹ And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

¹⁰ The next morning we (exc) immediately got ready to go to Macedonia, because we believed that God had called us to go and preach the good message to the people there.

¹¹ So we (exc) got on a ship in Troas and sailed across the sea to Samothrace Island. We spent the night there, and the next day we sailed again across the sea and arrived at Neapolis port/town.

¹² Then we left Neapolis and went by land to Philippi. It was a very important city in Macedonia province, where many Roman citizens lived. We stayed in Philippi several days.

¹³ On the first ◄Sabbath/Jewish day of rest► after we(exc) arrived, we went outside the city gate down to the river. We had heard someone say that Jewish people gathered to pray there. When we arrived there, we saw some women who had gathered to pray. So we sat down and began to tell them the message about Jesus.

¹⁴ A woman whose name was Lydia was one of those who were listening to Paul. She was a non-Jewish woman, from Thyatira city, who bought and sold expensive purple cloth. She had accepted what the Jews believe about God. The Lord God caused her to pay attention to the message that Paul preached, and she believed it. The members of her household also heard the good message and believed in Jesus MTY.

¹⁵ After Paul and Silas baptized Lydia and the others who lived in her house MTY {After Lydia and the others who lived in her house were baptized}, she invited us to go and stay in her home. She said, “You (pl) know that I now believe in the Lord Jesus, so please come and stay in my house.” She persuaded us to do that, so we(exc) stayed there.

¹⁶ Another day, while we (exc) were going to the place where people regularly gathered to pray, we met a young woman who was a slave. An evil spirit was enabling her to be a ventriloquist and to tell people what would happen to them. People paid a lot of money to the men who were her owners, in return for her telling them things that she said would happen to them.

¹⁷ This young woman followed Paul and the rest of us. She continually shouted, “These men serve the God who is the greatest of all gods! They are telling you how ◄ God can save you so that he will not punish you/to be saved►”

¹⁸ She continued to do that for many days. Finally Paul became irritated. So he turned toward the young woman and rebuked the evil spirit that was in her. He said, “By the authority MTY of Jesus Christ, I command you (sg) to come out of this young woman!” Right away the evil spirit left her.

¹⁹ And then her owners realized that she could no longer earn money for them because she could no longer predict what would happen to people, so they were angry. They grabbed Paul and Silas and forcefully took them to the public square, to the place where the government authorities and a lot of other people were gathered.

²⁰ The owners of the young woman brought Paul and Silas to the city officials and told them, “These men are Jews, and they are greatly troubling the people in MTY our city.

²¹ They are teaching that we (inc) should follow customs that our laws do not allow us Romans to consider to be correct or to obey!”

²² Many of the crowd joined those who were accusing Paul and Silas, and started beating them. Then the Roman authorities commanded soldiers to tear the shirts off Paul and Silas and to beat them with rods/sticks.

²³ So the soldiers beat Paul and Silas vigorously with rods. After that, they took them and shoved them into the prison. They told the jailer that he should lock them up securely.

²⁴ Because the officials had commanded him to do that, the jailer shoved Paul and Silas into the cell that was farthest inside. There, he made them sit down on the floor/ground and stretch out their legs. Then he fastened their ankles in grooves between two large wooden beams, so that Paul and Silas could not move their legs.

²⁵ About midnight, Paul and Silas were praying aloud and praising God by singing hymns. The other prisoners were listening attentively to them.

²⁶ Suddenly there was a very strong earthquake. It shook the entire jail SYN and its foundation SYN. The earthquake caused all the doors of the jail to open suddenly, and caused all the chains that fastened the prisoners to fall off.

²⁷ The jailer woke up and saw that the doors of the jail were open. He thought that the prisoners had escaped. So he pulled out his sword in order to kill himself, because he knew that the officials would kill him if the prisoners escaped.

²⁸ Paul saw the jailer and shouted to him, “Do not harm yourself! We (exc) prisoners are all here!”

²⁹ The jailer shouted to someone to bring torches/lanterns, and after they brought them, he rushed into the jail and knelt down in front of Paul and Silas. He was very afraid, so much so that he was trembling/shaking.

³⁰ Then he brought Paul and Silas out of the jail and asked: “Sirs, what do I need to do to be saved from being punished for my sins?”

³¹ They answered, “Trust in what the Lord Jesus has done for you, and you will be saved { God will save you}, and the others who live in MTY your house will also be saved if they believe in Jesus.”

¹¹ So, from Troas we went straight by ship to Samothrace and the day after to Neapolis;

¹² And from there to Philippi, which is the most important town of Macedonia and a Roman colony: and we were there for some days.

¹³ And on the Sabbath we went outside the town, by the river, where we had an idea that there would be a place of prayer; and, being seated, we had talk with the women who had come together.

¹⁴ And a certain woman named Lydia, a trader in purple cloth of the town of Thyatira, and a God-fearing woman, gave ear to us: whose heart the Lord made open to give attention to the things which Paul was saying.

¹⁵ And when she and her family had had baptism, she made a request to us, saying, If it seems to you that I am true to the Lord, come into my house and be my guests. And she made us come.

¹⁶ And when we were going to the place of prayer, we came across a girl with a spirit which gave knowledge of the future, whose masters made great profit from her power.

¹⁷ She came after Paul and us, crying out and saying, These men are the servants of the Most High God, who are giving you news of the way of salvation.

¹⁸ And this she did on a number of days. But Paul was greatly troubled and, turning, said to the spirit, I give you orders in the name of Jesus Christ, to come out of her. And it came out that very hour.

¹⁹ But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they took Paul and Silas, pulling them into the market-place before the rulers;

²⁰ And when they had taken them before the authorities, they said, These men, who are Jews, are greatly troubling our town;

²¹ Teaching rules of living which it is not right for us to have or to keep, being Romans.

²² And the people made an attack on them all together: and the authorities took their clothing off them, and gave orders for them to be whipped.

²³ And when they had given them a great number of blows, they put them in prison, giving orders to the keeper of the prison to keep them safely:

²⁴ And he, having such orders, put them into the inner prison with chains on their feet.

²⁵ But about the middle of the night, Paul and Silas were making prayers and songs to God in the hearing of the prisoners;

²⁶ And suddenly there was an earth-shock, so that the base of the prison was moved: and all the doors came open, and everyone's chains came off.

²⁷ And the keeper, coming out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, took his sword and was about to put himself to death, fearing that the prisoners had got away.

²⁸ But Paul said in a loud voice, Do yourself no damage, for we are all here.

²⁹ And he sent for lights and came rushing in and, shaking with fear, went down on his face before Paul and Silas,

³⁰ And took them out and said, Sirs, what have I to do to get salvation?

³¹ And they said, Have faith in the Lord Jesus, and you and your family will have salvation.

¹⁰ And when he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go forth to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to announce to them the glad tidings.

¹¹ Having sailed therefore away from Troas, we went in a straight course to Samothracia, and on the morrow to Neapolis,

¹² and thence to Philippi, which is the first city of that part of Macedonia, a colony. And we were staying in that city certain days.

¹³ And on the sabbath day we went outside the gate by the river, where it was the custom for prayer to be, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had assembled.

¹⁴ And a certain woman, by name Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, who worshipped God, heard; whose heart the Lord opened to attend to the things spoken by Paul.

¹⁵ And when she had been baptised and her house, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and abide there. And she constrained us.

¹⁶ And it came to pass as we were going to prayer that a certain female slave, having a spirit of Python, met us, who brought much profit to her masters by prophesying.

¹⁷ She, having followed Paul and us, cried saying, These men are bondmen of the Most High God, who announce to you the way of salvation.

¹⁸ And this she did many days. And Paul, being distressed, turned, and said to the spirit, I enjoin thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And it came out the same hour.

¹⁹ And her masters, seeing that the hope of their gains was gone, having seized Paul and Silas, dragged them into the market before the magistrates;

²⁰ and having brought them up to the praetors, said, These men utterly trouble our city, being Jews,

²¹ and announce customs which it is not lawful for us to receive nor practise, being Romans.

²² And the crowd rose up too against them; and the praetors, having torn off their clothes, commanded to scourge them.

²³ And having laid many stripes upon them they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely;

²⁴ who, having received such a charge, cast them into the inner prison, and secured their feet to the stocks.

²⁵ And at midnight Paul and Silas, in praying, were praising God with singing, and the prisoners listened to them.

²⁶ And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison shook, and all the doors were immediately opened, and the bonds of all loosed.

²⁷ And the jailor being awakened out of his sleep, and seeing the doors of the prison opened, having drawn a sword was going to kill himself, thinking the prisoners had fled.

²⁸ But Paul called out with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm, for we are all here.

²⁹ And having asked for lights, he rushed in, and, trembling, fell down before Paul and Silas.

³⁰ And leading them out said, Sirs, what must I do that I may be saved?

³¹ And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus and thou shalt be saved, thou and thy house.

¹⁰ And as soon as he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go into Macedonia, being assured that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

¹¹ And sailing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the day following to Neapolis;

¹² And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of part of Macedonia, a colony. And we were in this city some days conferring together.

¹³ And upon the sabbath day, we went forth without the gate by a river side, where it seemed that there was prayer; and sitting down, we spoke to the women that were assembled.

¹⁴ And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, one that worshipped God, did hear: whose heart the Lord opened to attend to those things which were said by Paul.

¹⁵ And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying: If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

¹⁶ And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain girl, having a pythonical spirit, met us, who brought to her masters much gain by divining.

¹⁷ This same following Paul and us, cried out, saying: These men are the servants of the most high God, who preach unto you the way of salvation.

¹⁸ And this she did many days. But Paul being grieved, turned, and said to the spirit: I command thee, in the name of Jesus Christ, to go out from her. And he went out the same hour.

¹⁹ But her masters, seeing that the hope of their gain was gone, apprehending Paul and Silas, brought them into the marketplace to the rulers.

²⁰ And presenting them to the magistrates, they said: These men disturb our city, being Jews;

²¹ And preach a fashion which it is not lawful for us to receive nor observe, being Romans.

²² And the people ran together against them; and the magistrates rending off their clothes, commanded them to be beaten with rods.

²³ And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the gaoler to keep them diligently.

²⁴ Who having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

²⁵ And at midnight, Paul and Silas praying, praised God. And they that were in prison, heard them.

²⁶ And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened, and the bands of all were loosed.

²⁷ And the keeper of the prison, awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the doors of the prison open, drawing his sword, would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.

²⁸ But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying: Do thyself no harm, for we all are here.

²⁹ Then calling for a light, he went in, and trembling, fell down at the feet of Paul and Silas.

³⁰ And bringing them out, he said: Masters, what must I do, that I may be saved?

³¹ But they said: Believe in the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

¹¹ We set sail from Troas and made straight for Samothrace. The next day we went on to Neapolis,

¹² and from there to Philippi, the most important town in Macedonia, and also a Roman colony. We stayed in this city for several days.

¹³ On the Sabbath day we went out of the town gates down to the riverside where we thought people would come to pray. We sat down and talked with the women that had gathered there.

¹⁴ One of them was called Lydia, who sold purple cloth from the town of Thyatira. She worshiped God, and she listened to us. The Lord opened her mind to what Paul was saying, and she accepted what he told her.

¹⁵ After she and all her household were baptized, she pleaded with us, “If you really think that I'm truly committed to the Lord, then come and stay at my house.” She kept on insisting until we agreed!

¹⁶ One day when we were going down to the place of prayer we met a slave girl possessed by an evil spirit. She earned her masters a great deal of money by fortune-telling.

¹⁷ This girl followed Paul and the rest of us around, shouting, “These men are the servants of Almighty God. They are telling you how to be saved!”

¹⁸ She went on doing this for several days. This bothered Paul so he turned around and told the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to leave her!” The spirit immediately left her.

¹⁹ But when her masters saw they had lost their means of making money, they grabbed hold of Paul and Silas and dragged them before the authorities at the marketplace.

²⁰ They brought them in front of the magistrates, and accused them: “These Jewish men are causing a great disturbance in our town,” they said.

²¹ “They're advocating things that are illegal for us as Romans to accept or to practice.”

²² The crowd joined together in an attack on them. The magistrates tore off Paul and Silas' clothes, and ordered them beaten with rods.

²³ After giving them a severe beating, they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them locked up.

²⁴ The jailer followed his orders. He threw Paul and Silas into the inner cell and shackled their feet in the stocks.

²⁵ Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing praises to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.

²⁶ Suddenly a tremendous earthquake shook the foundations of the prison. Immediately all the doors flew open and everyone's chains fell off.

²⁷ The jailer woke up and saw the doors of the prison wide open. He drew his sword and was about to kill himself, thinking that the prisoners had escaped.

²⁸ But Paul shouted out, “Don't hurt yourself—we're all still here!”

²⁹ The jailer asked for lights to be brought and rushed in. Shaking with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas.

³⁰ He escorted them out and asked them, “Sirs, what do I have to do so I can be saved?”

³¹ “Trust in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your whole household,” they replied.

¹⁹ But her masters seeing that the hope of their gain was gone, laid hold of Paul and Silas, and dragged them into the market-place to the rulers;

²⁰ and having brought them before the magistrates, said, These men are grievously disturbing our city, being Jews;

¹⁰ I, Luke, joined with Paul and Silas there at Troas. Paul told us what he saw, and then we knew that God wanted us to tell the good news to the people in Macedonia, and we got ready to go there.

¹¹ We got on a ship and went straight to the town called Samothrace, and the next day we came to the town called Neapolis.

¹² We left the ship there and we went by road to the town called Philippi, and we stayed there for a few days. Philippi was the main town in that part of Macedonia, and a lot of Roman people lived there.

¹³ On the next Saturday we went outside the town to a place near the river. We thought we might see some Jewish people meeting there to pray. Some women were there, and we sat down and talked with them.

¹⁴ One woman was from the town called Thyatira, and her name was Lydia. She was a woman that respected God. Her job was to sell purple cloth. She listened carefully to the things Paul talked about, and Jesus helped her to believe in him.

¹⁵ Then we baptised Lydia and her family. After that Lydia asked us to come and stay at her house. She said, “You mob know that I really believe now in Jesus, our leader, so please come and stay at my place.” She kept asking us until we agreed, so we stayed at her place.

¹⁶ Another day we started to go to another place to meet with people and pray to God. There was a young woman on that road that had a bad spirit in her. That spirit showed her things that were going to happen to people. Some men made this young woman work for them with no pay. People used to pay a lot of money to her bosses, then she told those people things that will happen to them.

¹⁷ That young woman saw Paul and the rest of us going on that road, and she followed us, and she kept on shouting, “Hey, these men serve the God that is the greatest of all gods. They can tell you what to do so that God will save you and not punish you.”

¹⁸ She kept doing that for a lot of days. In the end Paul got upset. He turned around to the young woman and said to that bad spirit, “My boss, Jesus Christ, says, ‘Get out of her.’” Then the bad spirit came out of that young woman.

¹⁹ Her bosses saw this happen and they thought, “Oh, no. Now she will not be able to tell anybody what will happen to them, and she will not get us any more money.” And her bosses were angry with Paul and Silas. They grabbed Paul and Silas and dragged them to the Roman judges in the middle of that town.

²⁰ Her bosses said to the judges, “These men are making a lot of trouble for everyone in our town. They are Jews,

²¹ and they are telling people to do things that our Roman law says are wrong.”

²² A lot of other people there joined those bosses and started blaming Paul and Silas. Then the Roman bosses told their soldiers, “Rip the shirts off Paul and Silas and hit them with sticks.”

²³ The soldiers hit Paul and Silas really hard with sticks and then they put them in the jail. They told the boss of that jail, “Make sure Paul and Silas don’t get away.”

²⁴ So the boss of that jail put them in a room that was right in the middle of that jail, and he made them sit down on the ground, then he locked their ankles between 2 big logs so that Paul and Silas couldn’t move their legs.

²⁵ Later, in the middle of the night, Paul and Silas were praying aloud to God and saying that he is really good, and they were singing songs to God. The other prisoners were listening to them.

²⁶ Suddenly there was a very big earthquake. It shook the jail, and even the cement underneath it, and all the doors of the jail swung open, and all the chains fell off the arms and legs of the prisoners.

²⁷ The jail boss woke up and saw that the doors of the jail were open, and he thought, “Those prisoners have all run away. I’m in big trouble.” So he got his big knife to kill himself.

²⁸ Paul saw the jail boss and shouted to him, “Don’t hurt yourself. We are all here.”

²⁹ The jail boss told somebody to bring some lights, then he ran into the jail and got down in front of Paul and Silas, to show them respect. He was very afraid. He was shaking.

³⁰ Then he took Paul and Silas out of the jail and asked, “Sirs, what can I do so that God will save me?”

³¹ They said, “Believe in Jesus, and God will save you. And he will do the same for your family too.”

¹⁰ After he had sene the vision immediatly we prepared to goo into Macedonia certified that the lorde had called vs for to preache the gospell vnto them.

¹¹ Then lowsed we forth from Troada and with a strayght course came to Samothracia and the nexte daye to Neapolim

¹² and from thence to Philippos which is the chefest citie in the partes of Macedonia and a fre cite. We were in that cite abydynge a certayne dayes.

¹³ And on the saboth dayes we went out of the cite besydes a ryver where men were wont to praye and we sate doune and spake vnto the wemen which resorted thyther.

¹⁴ And a certayne woman named Lydia a seller of purple of the cite of Thiatira which worshipped God gave vs audience. Whose hert the Lorde opened that she attended vnto the thinges which Paul spake.

¹⁵ When she was baptised and her housholde she besought vs sayinge: Yf ye thinke that I beleve on the Lorde come into my housse and abyde there. And she constrayned vs.

¹⁶ And it fortuned as we went to prayer a certayn damsell possessed with a sprete that prophesied met vs which brought her master and mastres moche vauntage with prophesyinge.

¹⁷ The same folowed Paul and vs and cryed sayinge: these men are the servauntes of the most hye God which shewe vnto vs the waye of salvacion.

¹⁸ And this dyd she many dayes. But Paul not content, turned about and sayd to the sprete: I commaunde the in the name of Iesu Christ that thou come out of her. And he came out the same houre.

¹⁹ And when her master and mastres sawe that the hope of their gaynes was gone they caught Paul and Sylas and drue the into the market place vnto the rulars

²⁰ and brought them to the officers sayinge: These men trouble oure cite which are Iewes

²¹ and preache ordinaunces which are not laufull for vs to receave nether to observe seinge we are Romayns.

²² And the people ranne on them and the officers rent their clothes and commaunded them to be beaten with roddes.

²³ And when they had beaten them sore they cast them into preson commaundynge the iayler to kepe them surely.

²⁴ Which iayler when he had receaved suche commaundment thrust them into the ynner preson and made their fete fast in the stockes.

²⁵ At mydnyght Paul and Sylas prayed and lauded God. And the presoners hearde them.

²⁶ And sodenly ther was a greate erth quake so that the fonndacion of the preson was shaken and by and by all the dores opened and every mannes bondes were lowsed.

²⁷ When the keper of the preson waked out of his slepe and sawe the preson dores open he drue out his swearde and wolde have kylled him selfe supposynge the presoners had bene fledde.

²⁸ But Paul cryed with a lowde voyce sayinge: Do thy selfe no harme for we are all heare.

²⁹ Then he called for a lyght and sprange in and came tremblynge and fell doune before Paul and Sylas

³⁰ and brought them out and sayde: Syrs what must I do to be saved?

³¹ And they sayde: beleve on the Lorde Iesus and thou shalt be saved and thy housholde.

¹⁴ A certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God, listened to us. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul.

¹⁵ When she and her house were baptized, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come and stay in house.” And she persuaded us.

¹⁶ It came about that, as we were going to the place of prayer, a certain young woman who had a spirit of divination encountered us. She brought her masters much gain by fortunetelling.

¹⁷ This woman followed after Paul and us and shouted, saying, “These men are servants of the Most High God. They proclaim to you the way of salvation.”

¹⁸ She did this for many days. But Paul, being greatly annoyed by her, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out right away.

¹⁹ When her masters saw that their opportunity to make money was now gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the authorities.

²⁰ When they had brought them to the magistrates, they said, “These men are stirring up our city. They are Jews.

²¹ They proclaim customs that are not lawful for Romans to accept or practice.”

²² Then the crowd rose up together against Paul and Silas; the magistrates tore their garments off them and commanded them to be beaten with rods.

²³ When they had laid many blows upon them, they threw them into prison and commanded the jailer to keep them securely.

²⁴ After he got this command, the jailer threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.

²⁵ Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.

²⁶ Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone's chains were unfastened.

²⁷ The jailer was awakened from sleep and saw the open prison doors; he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, because he thought that the prisoners had escaped.

²⁸ But Paul shouted with a loud voice, saying, “Do not harm yourself, because we are all here.”

²⁹ The jailer called for lights and rushed in and, trembling for fear, fell down before Paul and Silas,

³⁰ and brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

¹⁶ And it was done, when we went to prayer, that a damsel or a wench that had a spirit of divination, met us, which gave great winning to her lords in divining.

¹⁷ This pursued Paul and us, and cried, and said, These men be servants of the high God, that tell to you the way of health.

¹⁸ And this she did in many days. And Paul sorrowed, and turned, and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ, that thou go out of her. And he went out in the same hour.

¹⁹ And the lords of her saw, that the hope of their winning went away, and they took Paul and Silas, and led them into the chapping, either doom place, to the princes.

²⁰ And they brought them to the magistrates, and said, These men disturb or distrouble our city, for they be Jews,

²¹ and show a custom, which it is not leaveful to us to receive, neither do, since we be Romans.

²² And the people and magistrates ran against them, and when they had rent to pieces the coats of them, they commanded them to be beaten with rods.

²³ And when they had given to them many wounds, they sent them into prison, and commanded to the keeper, that he should keep them diligently.

²⁴ And when he had taken such a precept, he put them into the inner prison, and restrained the feet of them in a tree.

²⁵ And at midnight Paul and Silas worshipped, and praised God; and they that were in the keeping, heard them.

²⁶ And suddenly a great earth-moving was made, so that the foundaments of the prison were moved. And anon all the doors were opened, and the bonds of all were loosed.

²⁷ And the keeper of the prison was awaked, and saw the gates of the prison opened, and with a sword drawn out he would have slain himself, and guessed that the men that were bound had fled.

²⁸ But Paul cried with a great voice, and said, Do thou none harm or nothing of evil to thyself, for all we be here.

²⁹ And he asked light, and entered, and trembled, and fell down to Paul and to Silas at their feet.

³⁰ And he brought them withoutforth, and said, Lords, what behooveth me to do, that I be made safe?

³¹ And they said, Believe thou in the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be safe, and thine house.

¹⁰ And as he had seen the vision, anon we sought to go forth into Macedonia (or at once we took action to go forth to Macedonia), and were made certain, that God had called us to preach or to evangelize to them.

¹¹ And we went by ship from Troas, and came to Samothracia with straight course, or Soothly we going by boat, or sailing, from Troas, with straight course came to Samothracia; and the day (pur)suing to Neapolis (or and the following day to Neapolis);

¹² and from thence to Philippi, that is the first part of Macedonia, the city colony. And we were in this city some days, and spake together.

¹⁸ And this she did in many days (or And she did this for many days). And Paul sorrowed, and turned, and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ, that thou go out of her. And he went out in the same hour.

¹⁹ And the lords of her saw, that the hope of their winning went away, and they took (hold of) Paul and Silas, and led them into the chapping, either doom place, to the princes. (And her masters saw, that their hope for more profit went away, and they took hold of Paul and Silas, and led (them) to the market, (or to the seat of judgement), that is, the city square, to the city leaders.)

²⁰ And they brought them to the magistrates, and said, These men disturb or distrouble our city, for they be Jews,

²¹ and show a custom, which it is not leaveful to us to receive (or which it is not lawful for us to accept), neither do, since we be Romans.

²² And the people and magistrates ran against them, and when they had rent to pieces the coats of them (or and when they had torn their coats to pieces), they commanded them to be beaten with rods.

²³ And when they had given to them many wounds, they sent them into prison, and commanded to the keeper, that he should keep them diligently. (And after they had given them many wounds, they threw them into prison, and commanded the warden of the prison, that he should guard them carefully.)

²⁴ And when he had taken such a precept, he put them into the inner prison, and restrained the feet of them in a tree (or and restrained their feet in the stocks).

²⁵ And at midnight Paul and Silas worshipped, and praised God; and they that were in the keeping (or and those who were in the prison), heard them.

²⁶ And suddenly a great earth-moving was made, so that the foundaments of the prison were moved. And anon all the doors were opened, and the bonds of all were loosed. (And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so strong that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And at once all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were loosened.)

²⁷ And the keeper of the prison was awaked (or And the warden of the prison was awakened), and saw the gates of the prison opened, and with a sword drawn out he would have slain himself, and guessed that the men that were bound had fled.

²⁸ But Paul cried with a great voice, and said, Do thou none harm to thyself or Do thou nothing of evil to thyself, for all we be here. (But Paul cried with a loud voice, and said, Do not harm thyself, for all of us still be here.)

²⁹ And he asked (for) light, and entered in, and trembled, and fell down to Paul and to Silas at their feet.

³⁰ And he brought them withoutforth, and said, Lords, what behooveth me to do, that I be made safe? (And he brought them outside, and said, Lords, what must I do, so that I can be saved?)

³¹ And they said, Believe thou in the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be safe, and thine house. (And they said, Believe in the Lord Jesus, and thou, and thy family, shall be saved.)

¹⁰ and when he saw the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go forth to Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord hath called us to preach good news to them,

¹¹ having set sail, therefore, from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, on the morrow also to Neapolis,

¹² thence also to Philippi, which is a principal city of the part of Macedonia — a colony. And we were in this city abiding certain days,

¹³ on the sabbath-day also we went forth outside of the city, by a river, where there used to be prayer, and having sat down, we were speaking to the women who came together,

¹⁴ and a certain woman, by name Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, worshipping God, was hearing, whose heart the Lord did open to attend to the things spoken by Paul;

¹⁵ and when she was baptized, and her household, she did call upon us, saying, 'If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, having entered into my house, remain;' and she constrained us.

¹⁶ And it came to pass in our going on to prayer, a certain maid, having a spirit of Python, did meet us, who brought much employment to her masters by soothsaying,

¹⁷ she having followed Paul and us, was crying, saying, 'These men are servants of the Most High God, who declare to us a way of salvation;'

¹⁸ and this she was doing for many days, but Paul having been grieved, and having turned, said to the spirit, 'I command thee, in the name of Jesus Christ, to come forth from her;' and it came forth the same hour.

¹⁹ And her masters having seen that the hope of their employment was gone, having caught Paul and Silas, drew them to the market-place, unto the rulers,

²⁰ and having brought them to the magistrates, they said, 'These men do exceedingly trouble our city, being Jews;

²¹ and they proclaim customs that are not lawful for us to receive nor to do, being Romans.'

²² And the multitude rose up together against them, and the magistrates having torn their garments from them, were commanding to beat them with rods,

²³ many blows also having laid upon them, they cast them to prison, having given charge to the jailor to keep them safely,

²⁴ who such a charge having received, did put them to the inner prison, and their feet made fast in the stocks.

²⁵ And at midnight Paul and Silas praying, were singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were hearing them,

²⁶ and suddenly a great earthquake came, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken, opened also presently were all the doors, and of all — the bands were loosed;

²⁷ and the jailor having come out of sleep, and having seen the doors of the prison open, having drawn a sword, was about to kill himself, supposing the prisoners to be fled,

²⁸ and Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying, 'Thou mayest not do thyself any harm, for we are all here.'

²⁹ And, having asked for a light, he sprang in, and trembling he fell down before Paul and Silas,

³⁰ and having brought them forth, said, 'Sirs, what must I do — that I may be saved?'

³¹ and they said, 'Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved — thou and thy house;'
