¹⁸ Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.

¹⁹ And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the guards, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judæa to Cæsarea, and tarried there.

Then he questioned the soldiers who had been guarding Peter, and asked them, “ How did Peter get away when you were there guarding him?” But they could not explain it. So he commanded them to be led away to be executed { other soldiers to lead them away to execute them}. Afterwards, Herod went from Judea province down to Caesarea, where he stayed for some time.

¹⁸ After the sun came up the soldiers were really upset and worried. They were all saying things like, “Hey, what happened to Peter? Who let him get away?”

¹⁹ Then Herod told them all to look everywhere to find him. But they didn’t find him. So Herod judged those 16 soldiers. He asked them some questions, then he told the other soldiers to kill them. After that Herod left Judea country and went to stay for a while in the town called Caesarea.

¹⁹ and Herod having sought for him, and not having found, having examined the guards, did command them to be led away to punishment, and having gone down from Judea to Caesarea, he was abiding there.
