Acts 11:1-20 in English

¹ Now the apostles and the brethren that were in Judæa heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God.

² And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him,

³ saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.

⁴ But Peter began, and expounded the matter unto them in order, saying,

⁵ I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, a certain vessel descending, as it were a great sheet let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even unto me:

⁶ upon which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw the fourfooted beasts of the earth and wild beasts and creeping things and birds of the heaven.

⁷ And I heard also a voice saying unto me, Rise, Peter; kill and eat.

⁸ But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath ever entered into my mouth.

⁹ But a voice answered the second time out of heaven, What God hath cleansed, make not thou common.

¹⁰ And this was done thrice: and all were drawn up again into heaven.

¹¹ And behold, forthwith three men stood before the house in which we were, having been sent from Cæsarea unto me.

¹² And the Spirit bade me go with them, making no distinction. And these six brethren also accompanied me; and we entered into the man’s house:

¹³ and he told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house, and saying, Send to Joppa, and fetch Simon, whose surname is Peter;

¹⁴ who shall speak unto thee words, whereby thou shalt be saved, thou and all thy house.

¹⁵ And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, even as on us at the beginning.

¹⁶ And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit.

¹⁷ If then God gave unto them the like gift as he did also unto us, when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I, that I could withstand God?

¹⁸ And when they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then to the Gentiles also hath God granted repentance unto life.

¹⁹ They therefore that were scattered abroad upon the tribulation that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phoenicia, and Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to none save only to Jews.

²⁰ But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Greeks also, preaching the Lord Jesus.

¹ And the apostles and brethren that were in Judæa heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.

² And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him,

³ Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.

⁴ But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, saying,

⁵ I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me:

⁶ Upon the which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.

⁷ And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat.

⁸ But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth.

⁹ But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

¹⁰ And this was done three times: and all were drawn up again into heaven.

¹¹ And, behold, immediately there were three men already come unto the house where I was, sent from Cæsarea unto me.

¹² And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house:

¹³ And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter;

¹⁴ Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.

¹⁵ And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.

¹⁶ Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

¹⁷ Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?

¹⁸ When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

¹⁹ Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.

²⁰ And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus.

¹ The apostles and other believers who lived in various towns in Judea province heard people say that some non-Jewish people had believed the message from God about Jesus.

² So when Peter and the six other believers returned from Caesarea to Jerusalem, some Jewish believers criticized Peter, because they thought that Jews should not associate with non-Jews MTY.

³ They said to him, “Not only was it wrong for you(sg) to visit non-Jewish people, you even ate with them!”

⁴ So Peter began to explain exactly what had happened concerning Cornelius.

⁵ He said, “I was praying by myself in Joppa town, and in a trance I saw a vision. I saw that something like a large sheet was being lowered from heaven. It was tied with ropes at its four corners, and it came down to where I was.

⁶ As I was looking intently into it, I saw some tame animals but also animals that our laws forbid us to eat, including wild animals, snakes, and wild birds.

⁷ Then I heard God MTY commanding me, ‘Peter, get up, kill some of these, and cook and eat their meat!’

⁸ But I replied, ‘Lord, you(sg) surely do not really want me to do that, because I have never eaten MTY meat from any animal that our laws say that we (exc) must not eat SYN!’

⁹ God spoke from heaven to me a second time, ‘ I am God, so if I have made something acceptable to eat, do not say that it is not acceptable to eat!’

¹⁰ Then after that happened three times, the sheet with all those animals and birds was pulled up into heaven again.”

¹¹ “At that exact moment, three men who had been {whom Cornelius had} sent from Caesarea arrived at the house where I was staying.

¹² God's Spirit told me that I should be willing to go with them even though they were not Jews. These six Jewish believers from Joppa went with me to Caesarea, and then we (exc) went into that non-Jewish man's house.

¹³ He told us that he had seen an angel standing in his house. The angel told him, ‘Tell some men to go to Joppa and bring back Simon whose other name is Peter.

¹⁴ He will tell you (sg) how you and everyone MTY else in your house will be saved {how God will save you and everyone MTY else in your house}.’

¹⁵ After I started to speak, the Holy Spirit suddenly came down on them, just like he had first MTY come on us during the Pentecost festival.

¹⁶ Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John caused people to be baptized in water, but God will cause the Holy Spirit to enter you and change your lives.’

¹⁷ God gave those non-Jews the same Holy Spirit that he had given to us (inc) after we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ. So, ◄ I could not possibly tell God that he did wrong when he gave them the Holy Spirit!/how could I tell God that he did wrong when he gave them the Holy Spirit?► RHQ He was showing that he had received them!”

¹⁸ After those Jewish believers heard what Peter said, they stopped criticizing him. Instead, they praised God, saying, “Then it is clear to us that God has also accepted the non-Jews so that they will have eternal life, if they turn from their sinful behavior and believe in Jesus!”

¹⁹ After people had killed Stephen, many of the believers left Jerusalem and went to other places, because people were causing them to suffer there in Jerusalem. Some of them went to Phoenicia region, some went to Cyprus Island, and others went to Antioch city in Syria province. In those places they were continually telling people the message about Jesus, but they told only other Jewish people.

²⁰ Some of the believers were men from Cyprus and from Cyrene city in north Africa. They went to Antioch, and although they told other Jews about the Lord Jesus, they also told non-Jewish people there.

⁷ I also heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise, Peter, kill and eat!’

⁸ But I said, ‘Not so, Lord, for nothing unholy or unclean has ever entered into my mouth.’

⁹ But a voice answered me the second time out of heaven, ‘What God has cleansed, don’t you call unclean.’

¹⁰ This was done three times, and all were drawn up again into heaven.

¹ Now the Apostles and the brothers who were in Judaea had news that the word of God had been given to the Gentiles.

² And when Peter came to Jerusalem, those who kept the rule of circumcision had an argument with him,

³ Saying, You went to men without circumcision, and took food with them.

⁴ But Peter gave them an account of it all in order, saying to them,

⁵ I was in the town of Joppa, at prayer: and falling into a deep sleep, I saw in a vision a vessel like a great cloth let down from heaven, and it came down to me:

⁶ And looking on it with attention I saw in it all sorts of beasts and birds.

⁷ And a voice came to my ears saying, Come, Peter; take them for food.

⁸ But I said, No, Lord; for nothing common or unclean has ever come into my mouth.

⁹ But the voice, coming a second time from heaven, said, What God has made clean, do not you make common.

¹⁰ And this was done three times, and they were all taken up again into heaven.

¹¹ And at that minute, three men, sent from Caesarea, came to the house where we were.

¹² And the Spirit gave me orders to go with them, doubting nothing. And these six brothers came with me; and we went into that man's house:

¹³ And he gave us an account of how he had seen the angel in his house, saying, Send to Joppa, and get Simon, named Peter, to come to you;

¹⁴ Who will say words to you through which you and all your family may get salvation.

¹⁵ And, while I was talking to them, the Holy Spirit came on them, as on us at first.

¹⁶ And the words of the Lord came into my mind, how he said, The baptism of John was with water, but you will have baptism with the Holy Spirit.

¹⁷ If then God gave them, when they had faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, the same as he gave to us, who was I to go against God?

¹⁸ And hearing these things they said nothing more, but gave glory to God, saying, Then to the Gentiles as to us has God given a change of heart, so that they may have life.

¹⁹ Then those who had gone away at the time of the trouble about Stephen, went as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus, preaching to the Jews only.

²⁰ But some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, when they came to Antioch, gave the good news about the Lord Jesus to the Greeks.

¹ And the apostles and the brethren who were in Judaea heard that the nations also had received the word of God;

² and when Peter went up to Jerusalem, they of the circumcision contended with him,

³ saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised and hast eaten with them.

⁴ But Peter began and set forth the matter to them in order, saying,

⁵ I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in an ecstasy I saw a vision, a certain vessel descending like a great sheet, let down by four corners out of heaven, and it came even to me:

⁶ on which having fixed mine eyes, I considered, and saw the quadrupeds of the earth, and the wild beasts, and the creeping things, and the fowls of the heaven.

⁷ And I heard also a voice saying to me, Rise up, Peter, slay and eat.

⁸ And I said, In no wise, Lord, for common or unclean has never entered into my mouth.

⁹ And a voice answered the second time out of heaven, What God has cleansed, do not thou make common.

¹⁰ And this took place thrice, and again all was drawn up into heaven;

¹¹ and lo, immediately three men were at the house in which I was, sent to me from Caesarea.

¹² And the Spirit said to me to go with them, nothing doubting. And there went with me these six brethren also, and we entered into the house of the man,

¹⁸ And when they heard these things they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then indeed God has to the nations also granted repentance to life.

¹⁹ They then who had been scattered abroad through the tribulation that took place on the occasion of Stephen, passed through the country to Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one but to Jews alone.

²⁰ But there were certain of them, Cyprians and Cyrenians, who entering into Antioch spoke to the Greeks also, announcing the glad tidings of the Lord Jesus.

¹ And the apostles and brethren, who were in Judea, heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God.

² And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him,

³ Saying: Why didst thou go in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them?

⁴ But Peter began and declared to them the matter in order, saying:

⁵ I was in the city of Joppe praying, and I saw in an ecstasy of mind a vision, a certain vessel descending, as it were a great sheet let down from heaven by four corners, and it came even unto me.

⁶ Into which looking, I considered, and saw fourfooted creatures of the earth, and beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air:

⁷ And I heard also a voice saying to me: Arise, Peter; kill and eat.

⁸ And I said: Not so, Lord; for nothing common or unclean hath ever entered into my mouth.

⁹ And the voice answered again from heaven: What God hath made clean, do not thou call common.

¹⁰ And this was done three times: and all were taken up again into heaven.

¹¹ And behold, immediately there were three men come to the house wherein I was, sent to me from Caesarea.

¹² And the Spirit said to me, that I should go with them, nothing doubting. And these six brethren went with me also: and we entered into the man’s house.

¹³ And he told us how he had seen an angel in his house, standing, and saying to him: Send to Joppe, and call hither Simon, who is surnamed Peter,

¹⁴ Who shall speak to thee words, whereby thou shalt be saved, and all thy house.

¹⁹ Now they who had been dispersed by the persecution that arose on occasion of Stephen, went about as far as Phenice and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to none, but to the Jews only.

²⁰ But some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they were entered into Antioch, spoke also to the Greeks, preaching the Lord Jesus.

⁴ But Peter, beginning to speak, was setting forth to them in order, saying,

⁵ “I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw a vision, a certain vessel coming down like a great sheet, being lowered by the four corners from heaven; and it came as far as me;

⁶ on which, looking intently, I was contemplating, and I saw the four-footed animals of the earth, and the wild beasts, and the reptiles, and the birds of the air.

⁷ And I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Arise, Peter; kill and eat.’

⁸ But I said, ‘By no means, Lord! For nothing common or unclean has ever entered into my mouth.’

⁹ But the voice answered me a second time from heaven, ‘What God has made clean, you must not make common.’

¹⁰ And this was done three times, and again all things were drawn up into heaven.

¹¹ And behold, immediately three men stood before the house in which I was, having been sent from Caesarea to me.

¹² And the Spirit told me to go with them, without wavering. Now these six brothers also went with me, and we entered into the house of the man.

¹³ And he related to us how he had seen the angel in his house, standing and saying to him, ‘Send men to Joppa, and send for Simon whose surname is Peter,

¹⁴ who will speak words to you by which you and all your household shall be saved.’

¹⁵ And when I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, as also on us in the beginning.

¹⁶ And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, ‘John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’

¹⁷ If then God has given to them the same gift as He gave to us, when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to hinder God?”

¹⁸ And hearing these things, they remained silent, and they glorified God, saying, “Then God has also granted even the Gentiles repentance unto life.”

¹⁹ Then those who were scattered because of the tribulation coming about over Stephen, went about as far as Phoenicia, and Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews only.

²⁰ But some of them were men from Cyprus and Cyrene, who, entering into Antioch spoke to the Greek speaking Jews, preaching the good news of the Lord Jesus.

¹ Now the Apostles and the brothers throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.

² When Peter went up to Jerusalem, those of the circumcision party started contending with him,

³ saying, “You went in to uncircumcised men and ate with them!”

⁴ So Peter began by explaining it to them in order, saying:

⁵ “I was in the town of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision: a certain object like a great sheet coming down out of the sky, being lowered by its four corners; and it came to me.

⁶ Upon peering into it I observed and distinguished the quadrupeds of the earth—both the wild animals and the reptiles—and the birds of the sky.

⁷ Then I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Get up, Peter, slaughter and eat!’

⁸ So I said: ‘No way, Lord! Never has anything ‘common’ or unclean entered my mouth!’

⁹ But the voice answered me, a second time, from heaven, ‘Things that God has made clean you must not call ‘common’.’

¹⁰ Well this was done three times, and it was all pulled back up into the sky.

¹¹ At that very moment three men stopped in front of the house where I was, having been sent from Caesarea to me.

¹² The Spirit told me to go with them, doubting nothing. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man's house.

¹³ He then related to us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying to him, ‘Send to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter,

¹⁴ who will speak words to you by which you and all your household will be saved.’

¹⁵ Well as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, just as on us at the beginning.

¹⁶ I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, ‘John indeed baptized with water, but you will be baptized with Holy Spirit.’

¹⁷ So if God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed upon the Lord Jesus, who was I to be able to withstand God?”

¹⁸ Upon hearing these things they acquiesced and started glorifying God, saying, “So then, God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance into life!”

¹⁹ Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that came about in connection with Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews only.

²⁰ But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who upon entering Antioch started speaking to the Greek-speakers, preaching the good news of the Lord Jesus.

¹ The apostles and brothers in Judea heard that foreigners had also accepted the word of God.

² When Peter arrived back in Jerusalem, those who believed circumcision was still essential argued with him.

³ “You went into the homes of uncircumcised men, and ate with them,” they said.

⁴ Peter began to explain to them everything that had happened.

⁵ “While I was in the town of Joppa I was praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. Something that looked like a large sheet was being let down by its four corners from heaven, and it came down to me.

⁶ When I looked inside I saw animals, wild beasts, reptiles, and birds.

⁷ Then I heard a voice that told me, ‘Get up, Peter, kill and eat.’

⁸ But I replied, ‘Absolutely not, Lord! Nothing impure or unclean has ever entered my mouth!’

⁹ The voice from heaven spoke again, and said, ‘Don't you call unclean what God has made clean!’

¹⁰ This happened three times, and then it was all taken back into heaven.

¹¹ At that very moment three men were standing in front of the house where we were staying. They had been sent from Caesarea to see me.

¹² The Spirit told me to go with them, and not to worry about who they were. These six brothers here also went with me, and we went into the man's house.

¹³ He explained to us how an angel had appeared to him in his house, who told him, ‘Send someone to Joppa, and fetch Simon, also called Peter,

¹⁴ who will tell you what you need to hear so you can be saved—you and your whole household.’

¹⁵ When I started speaking, the Holy Spirit fell on them, just as happened to us in the beginning.

¹⁶ Then I remembered what the Lord said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’

¹⁷ Since God gave them the same gift as he gave us when we trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ, what power did I have to oppose God?”

¹⁸ After they had heard this explanation, they didn't argue with him anymore, and praised God, saying, “Now God has granted the opportunity to repent and have eternal life to foreigners as well.”

¹⁹ Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that happened when Stephen was killed, traveled all the way to Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch. They only spread the good news among the Jews.

²⁰ But when some of them who were from Cyprus and Cyrene arrived in Antioch, they shared the good news with the Greeks too, telling them about the Lord Jesus.

¹ Nowe the Apostles and the brethren that were in Iudea, heard, that the Gentiles had also receiued the worde of God.

² And when Peter was come vp to Hierusalem, they of the circumcision contended against him,

³ Saying, Thou wentest in to men vncircumcised, and hast eaten with them.

⁴ Then Peter beganne, and expounded the thing in order to them, saying,

⁸ And I said, God forbid, Lord: for nothing polluted or vncleane hath at any time entred into my mouth.

⁹ But the voyce answered me the seconde time from heauen, The things that God hath purified, pollute thou not.

¹⁰ And this was done three times, and all were taken vp againe into heauen.

¹¹ Then behold, immediatly there were three men already come vnto the house where I was, sent from Cesarea vnto me.

¹² And the Spirit saide vnto me, that I should go with them, without doubting: moreouer these sixe brethren came with me, and we entred into the mans house.

¹³ And he shewed vs, howe he had seene an Angel in his house, which stoode and said to him, Send men to Ioppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter.

¹⁴ He shall speake wordes vnto thee, whereby both thou and all thine house shalbe saued.

¹ The apostles and the followers throughout Judea heard that even the Gentiles had welcomed God's message.

² But, when Peter went up to Jerusalem, those who were converts from Judaism began to attack him,

³ on the ground that he had visited people who were not circumcised, and had taken meals with them.

⁴ So Peter began to relate the facts to them as they had occurred.

¹² The Spirit told me to go with them without hesitation. These six companions also went with me. And, when we came into the man's house,

¹³ he told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house, and how the angel had said to him — ‘Send to Jaffa and fetch the Simon, who is also known as Peter;

¹⁴ for he will tell you truths, which will prove the means of salvation to you and all your household.’

¹⁵ I had but just begun to speak,” continued Peter, “when the Holy Spirit fell on them, exactly as on us at the first;

¹⁶ and I recalled the saying of the Master — ‘John baptised with water, but you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.’

¹⁷ Since then, God had given them the very same gift as he gave us when we became believers in Jesus Christ the Master — who was I that I could thwart God?”

¹⁸ On hearing this statement, they said no more, but broke out into praise of God. “So even to the Gentiles,” they exclaimed, “God has granted the repentance which leads to life!”

¹ The close followers of Jesus and the other Christians in Judea heard about Peter’s visit to Caesarea, and they heard that some people in Caesarea believed God’s word, even though they were not Jews.

² After Peter got back to Jerusalem some of the Jewish Christians growled at him.

³ They said, “You went into the house of people that are not Jews, and you even ate food with them.”

⁴ Then Peter told them all the things that happened.

⁵ He said, “I was in the town called Joppa and I was praying, and I had like a dream, but I was still awake. I saw something like a big sheet with things in it. Somebody was holding on to the 4 corners and they let it come down from heaven to me, on the ground.

⁶ I looked inside it and saw all kinds of animals, and lizards, and snakes, and birds.

⁷ Then I heard a voice say to me, ‘Get up Peter. Kill some of those animals and eat them.’

⁸ But I said, ‘No, boss. I will not. Our law says we can’t eat that kind of animal. They are no good, so I never eat any of them.’

⁹ Then I heard that voice from heaven again. It said, ‘If God says that something is good, don’t say it is no good.’

¹⁰ That happened 3 times, and then that sheet and everything in it went back up into heaven.

¹¹ Just then 3 men came to the house I was staying in. They came from Caesarea.

¹² The Holy Spirit told me, ‘Don’t worry, just go with those men.’ So I went with them, and these 6 other men here, they went with me too. We got there and went into a man’s house.

¹³ That man told us that he saw an angel in his house. The angel said, ‘Simon Peter has a message for you, so send somebody to Joppa to get him. He will tell you the way God can save you, and your family, and everyone else in your house too.’

¹⁵ I started talking to those people and then the Holy Spirit came into them. It was just like the first time that he came into us.

¹⁶ And I remembered that our leader Jesus said, ‘John baptised people with water but God will baptise you with the Holy Spirit.’

¹⁷ You know, we believed in our leader Jesus Christ and God gave us the Holy Spirit. And now those people that are not Jews, believe in Jesus too, and God gave them the Holy Spirit too, just like he gave him to us. So, you see, I couldn’t try to stop God, could I? No way.”

¹⁸ The Jewish Christians heard Peter say that, and they stopped growling at him. They started to thank God and say he is really good. They said, “Now we understand it. God will let anyone come to him, even people that are not Jews, and after they turn away from doing bad and come to him, he will give them new life that never stops. God is so good.”

¹⁹ Before this, at the time when some men killed Stephen, they wanted to kill the rest of the Christians too. So a lot of Christians ran away from Jerusalem, and went a long way, even to other countries. They told people in those places the message about Jesus, but they only told it to their own countrymen, the Jews. Some of those Christians went to Phoenicia country, and some to the island called Cyprus, and some to the town called Antioch.

²⁰ But some of them, men that belonged to Cyprus and the town called Cyrene, they went to Antioch and didn’t just talk only to Jews. They talked to Greek people too, and told them the good news about our leader Jesus.

¹ And the Apostles and the brethren that were thorowout Iewry harde saye that the hethen had also receaved the worde of God.

² And when Peter was come vp to Ierusalem they of the circumcision reasoned wyth him

³ sayinge: Thou wentest in to men vncircumcised and atest with them.

⁴ Then Peter began and expounded the thinge in order to the sayinge:

⁵ I was in the cyte of Ioppa prayinge and in a traunce I sawe a vision a certen vessell descende as it had bene a large lynnyn clothe let doune from hevin by the fower corners and it cam to me.

⁶ Into the which when I had fastened myn eyes I consydered and sawe fowerfoted beastes of the erth and vermen and wormes and foules of the ayer.

⁷ And I herde a voyce sayinge vnto me: aryse Peter sley and eate.

⁸ And I sayd: God forbyd lorde for nothinge comen or vnclene hath at eny tyme entred into my mouth.

⁹ But the voyce answered me agayne from heven count not thou those thinges come which god hath clensed.

¹⁰ And this was done thre tymes. And all were takin vp agayne into heven.

¹¹ And beholde immediatly ther were thre men come vnto the housse where I was sent from Cesarea vnto me.

¹² And the sprete sayde vnto me that I shuld go with them with out doutinge. Morover the sixe brethren accompanyed me: and we entred into the mans housse.

¹³ And he shewed vs how he had sene an angell in his housse which stod and sayde to him: Send men to Ioppa and call for Symon named also Peter:

¹⁴ he shall tell the wordes wherby both thou and all thyne housse shalbe saved.

¹⁵ And as I begane to preach the holy goost fell on them as he dyd on vs at the begynninge.

¹⁶ Then came to my remembraunce the wordes of the Lorde how he sayde: Iohn baptised with water but ye shalbe baptysed with the holy goost.

¹⁷ For as moche then as God gave the lyke gyftes as he dyd vnto vs when we beleved on the Lorde Iesus Christ: what was I that I shuld have with stonde God?

¹⁸ when they hearde this they helde their peace and gloryfied God sayinge: then hath God also to the gentyls graunted repentaunce vnto lyfe.

¹⁹ They which were scattryd abroade thorow the affliccion that arose aboute Steven walked thorow oute tyll they came vnto Phenices and Cypers and Antioche preachynge the worde to no man but vnto the Iewes only.

²⁰ Some of them were men of Cypers and Syrene which when they were come into Antioche spake vnto the Grekes and preched the Lorde Iesus.

⁸ I said, “Not so, Lord; for nothing unholy or unclean has ever entered into my mouth.”

⁹ But the voice answered again from heaven, “What God has declared clean, do not call unclean.”

¹⁰ This happened three times, and then everything was taken back up into heaven again.

¹¹ Behold, right away there were three men standing in front of the house where we were; they had been sent from Caesarea to me.

¹² The Spirit commanded me to go with them, and that I should make no distinction regarding them. These six brothers went with me, and we went into the man's house.

¹³ He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, “Send men to Joppa and bring back Simon who is called Peter.

¹⁴ He will speak to you a message by which you will be saved—you and all your household.”

¹⁵ As I began to speak to them, the Holy Spirit came on them, just as on us in the beginning.

¹⁶ I remembered the words of the Lord, how he said, “John indeed baptized with water; but you shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit.”

⁴ But Peter began, and explained to them in order, saying,

⁵ “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision: a certain container descending, like it was a great sheet let down from heaven by four corners. It came as far as me.

⁶ When I had looked intently at it, I considered, and saw the four-footed animals of the earth, wild animals, creeping things, and birds of the sky.

⁷ I also heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise, Peter, kill and eat!’

⁸ But I said, ‘Not so, Lord, for nothing unholy or unclean has ever entered into my mouth.’

⁹ But a voice answered me the second time out of heaven, ‘What God has cleansed, don’t you call unclean.’

¹⁰ This was done three times, and all were drawn up again into heaven.

¹¹ Behold, immediately three men stood before the house where I was, having been sent from Caesarea to me.

¹² The Spirit told me to go with them without discriminating. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house.

¹³ He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying to him, ‘Send to Joppa and get Simon, who is called Peter,

¹⁴ who will speak to you words by which you will be saved, you and all your house.’

¹⁵ As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, even as on us at the beginning.

¹⁶ I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John indeed baptised in water, but you will be baptised in the Holy Spirit.’

¹⁷ If then God gave to them the same gift as us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I, that I could withstand God?”

¹⁸ When they heard these things, they held their peace and glorified God, saying, “Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life!”

¹⁹ They therefore who were scattered abroad by the oppression that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except to Jews only.

²⁰ But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists, preaching the Lord Jesus.

¹ And the apostles and brethren that were in Judea, heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God.

² And when Peter had come to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him,

³ Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.

⁴ But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order to them, saying,

⁵ I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me:

⁶ Upon which when I had fastened my eyes, I considered, and saw four-footed beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping animals, and fowls of the air.

⁷ And I heard a voice saying to me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat.

⁸ But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth.

⁹ But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

¹⁰ And this was done three times: and all were drawn up again into heaven.

¹¹ And behold, immediately there were three men already come to the house where I was, sent from Cesarea to me.

¹² And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover, these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man's house:

¹³ And he showed us how he had seen an angel in his house, who stood and said to him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter;

¹⁴ Who shall tell thee words, by which thou and all thy house shall be saved.

¹⁵ And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, as on us at the beginning.

¹⁶ Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

¹⁷ Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did to us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, what was I that I could withstand God?

¹⁸ When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance to life.

¹⁹ Now they who were dispersed upon the persecution that arose about Stephen traveled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but to the Jews only.

²⁰ And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus.

¹ Now the emissaries and the brothers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.

³ and said, Why enteredest thou to men that have prepuce, and hast eaten with them?

⁴ And Peter began, and expounded to them by order, and said,

⁵ I was in the city of Joppa, and prayed, and I saw in ravishing of my mind or in excess of my soul a vision, that a vessel came down, as a great sheet with four cords or with four corners, and was sent down from heaven; and it came to me.

⁶ Into which I looking beheld, and saw four-footed beasts of the earth, and beasts, and creeping beasts, and volatiles of heaven or of the air.

⁷ And I heard also a voice that said to me, Peter, rise thou, and slay, and eat.

⁸ But I said, Nay, Lord; for common thing either unclean entered never into my mouth.

⁹ And the voice answered the second time from heaven, That thing that God hath cleansed, say thou not unclean.

¹⁰ And this was done by thrice, and all things were received again into heaven.

¹¹ And lo! three men anon stood in the house, in which I was; and they were sent from Caesarea to me.

¹² And the Spirit said to me, that I should go with them, and doubt nothing. Yea, and these six brethren came with me, and we entered into the house of the man.

¹³ And he told to us, how he saw an angel in his house, standing and saying to him, Send thou into Joppa, and call Simon, that is named Peter,

¹⁴ which shall speak to thee words, in which thou shalt be safe, and all thine house.

¹⁵ And when I had begun to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as into us in the beginning.

¹⁶ And I bethought on the word of the Lord, as he said, For John baptized in water, but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Ghost.

¹⁷ Therefore if God gave to them the same grace, as to us that believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I, that might forbid the Lord, that he give not the Holy Ghost or that he should not give the Holy Ghost to them that believed in the name of Jesus Christ?

¹⁸ When these things were heard, they held peace, and glorified God, and said, Therefore also to heathen men God hath given penance to life.

¹⁹ And they that were scattered of the tribulation that was made under Stephen, walked forth to Phoenicia, and to Cyprus, and to Antioch, and spake the word to no man, but to Jews alone.

²⁰ But some of them were men of Cyprus, and of Cyrene; which when they had entered into Antioch, they spake to the Greeks, and preached the Lord Jesus.

¹ And the apostles, and the brethren that were in Judea, heard that also heathen men received the word of God, and they glorified God. (And the apostles, and the brothers who were in Judea, heard that the Gentiles had also accepted the word of God, and they glorified God.)

² But when Peter came to Jerusalem, they that were of (the) circumcision, disputed against him,

³ and said, Why enteredest thou to men that have prepuce, and hast eaten with them? (and said, Why hast thou gone to those who have foreskin, or who be uncircumcised, and hast eaten with them?)

⁴ And Peter began, and expounded to them by order, and said,

⁵ I was in the city of Joppa, and prayed, and I saw in (the) ravishing of my mind, or in (the) excess of my soul, a vision, that a vessel came down, as a great sheet with four cords or with four corners, and was sent down from heaven; and it came to me.

⁶ Into which I looking beheld, and saw (the) four-footed beasts of the earth, and (other) beasts, and (the) creeping beasts, and (the) volatiles of (the) heaven(s), or of the air, (or and the birds of the air).

⁷ And I heard also a voice that said to me, Peter, rise thou, and slay, and eat.

⁸ But I said, Nay, Lord; for common thing either unclean entered never into my mouth. (But I said, No, Lord; for a common or an unclean thing hath never entered into my mouth.)

⁹ And the voice answered the second time from heaven, That thing that God hath cleansed, say thou not unclean.

¹⁰ And this was done by thrice, and (then) all (the) things were received again into heaven.

¹¹ And lo! three men anon stood in the house, in which I was, (or And behold! three men at once arrived at the house, where I was); and they were sent from Caesarea to me.

¹⁴ which shall speak to thee words, in which thou shalt be safe, and all thine house. (who shall speak to thee the words, by which thou shalt be saved, and all of thine house.)

¹⁵ And when I had begun to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as into us in the beginning. (And when I had begun to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us at the beginning.)

¹⁶ And I bethought on the word of the Lord, as he said, For John baptized in water, but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Ghost (or For John baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit).

¹⁷ Therefore if God gave to them the same grace, as to us that believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I, that might forbid the Lord, that he give not the Holy Ghost or that he should not give the Holy Ghost to them that believed in the name of Jesus Christ? (And so if God gave them the same gift, as to us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I, who would forbid the Lord, yea, that he should not give the Holy Spirit to those who believed in the name of Jesus Christ?)

¹⁸ When these things were heard, they held peace, and glorified God, and said, Therefore also to heathen men God hath given penance to life. (When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, and said, And so God hath given life-giving repentance also to the Gentiles.)

⁷ and I heard a voice saying to me, Having risen, Peter, slay and eat;

⁸ and I said, Not so, Lord; because anything common or unclean hath at no time entered into my mouth;

⁹ and a voice did answer me a second time out of the heaven, What God did cleanse, thou — declare not thou common.

¹⁰ 'And this happened thrice, and again was all drawn up to the heaven,

¹¹ and, lo, immediately, three men stood at the house in which I was, having been sent from Caesarea unto me,

¹² and the Spirit said to me to go with them, nothing doubting, and these six brethren also went with me, and we did enter into the house of the man,

¹³ he declared also to us how he saw the messenger in his house standing, and saying to him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, who is surnamed Peter,

¹⁴ who shall speak sayings by which thou shalt be saved, thou and all thy house.

¹⁵ 'And in my beginning to speak, the Holy Spirit did fall upon them, even as also upon us in the beginning,

¹⁶ and I remembered the saying of the Lord, how he said, John indeed did baptize with water, and ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit;

¹⁷ if then the equal gift God did give to them as also to us, having believed upon the Lord Jesus Christ, I — how was I able to withstand God?'

¹⁸ And they, having heard these things, were silent, and were glorifying God, saying, 'Then, indeed, also to the nations did God give the reformation to life.'

¹⁹ Those, indeed, therefore, having been scattered abroad, from the tribulation that came after Stephen, went through unto Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to none except to Jews only;

²⁰ and there were certain of them men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who having entered into Antioch, were speaking unto the Hellenists, proclaiming good news — the Lord Jesus,
