⁵⁷ But turned back, and dealt treacherously like their fathers: They were turned aside like a deceitful bow.

⁵⁸ For they provoked him to anger with their high places, And moved him to jealousy with their graven images.

⁵⁹ When God heard this, he was wroth, And greatly abhorred Israel;

⁶⁰ So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, The tent which he placed among men;

⁶¹ And delivered his strength into captivity, And his glory into the adversary’s hand.

⁶² He gave his people over also unto the sword, And was wroth with his inheritance.

⁶³ Fire devoured their young men; And their virgins had no marriage-song.

⁶⁴ Their priests fell by the sword; And their widows made no lamentation.

⁶⁵ Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, Like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.

⁶⁶ And he smote his adversaries backward: He put them to a perpetual reproach.

⁶⁸ But chose the tribe of Judah, The mount Zion which he loved.

⁵⁷ Instead, like their ancestors did, they rebelled against God and ◄were not loyal to/did not faithfully obey► him; they were as unreliable as a crooked arrow that does not go straight SIM.

⁵⁸ Because they worshiped carved images of their gods on the tops of hills, they caused God to become angry DOU.

⁵⁹ He saw what they were doing and became very angry, so he rejected the Israeli people.

⁶⁰ He no longer appeared to them at Shiloh in the tent where he had lived among them.

⁶¹ He allowed their enemies to capture the sacred chest, which was the symbol of his power and his glory.

⁶² Because he was angry with his people, he allowed them to be killed MTY by their enemies.

⁶³ Young men were killed in battles, with the result that the young women had no one to marry.

⁶⁴ Many priests were killed by their enemies' swords, and ◄the people did not allow the priests' widows/the priests' widows were not allowed► to mourn.

⁶⁵ Later, it was as though the Lord awoke from sleeping; he was like a strong man who ◄became stimulated/felt that he was strong► by (OR, became sober after) drinking a lot of wine SIM.

⁶⁶ He pushed their enemies back and caused them to be very ashamed for a long time HYP because they had been defeated.

⁶⁷ But he did not set up his tent where the people of the tribe of Ephraim lived; he did not choose their area to do that.

⁶⁸ Instead he chose the area where the tribe of Judah lived; he chose Zion Hill, which he loves.

⁶⁹ He decided to have his temple built there, high up, like his home in heaven; he caused it to be firm, and intended that his temple would last forever, like the earth.

⁷⁰ He chose David, who served him faithfully, and took him from the pastures

⁷¹ where he was taking care of his father's sheep, and appointed him to be the leader MET of the Israeli people, the people who belong to God.

⁵⁷ but turned back, and dealt treacherously like their fathers. They were twisted like a deceitful bow.

⁵⁸ For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their engraved images.

⁵⁹ When God heard this, he was angry, and greatly abhorred Israel,

⁶⁰ so that he abandoned the tent of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men,

⁶¹ and delivered his strength into captivity, his glory into the adversary’s hand.

⁶¹ And he let his strength be taken prisoner, and gave his glory into the hands of his hater.

⁶² He gave his people up to the sword, and was angry with his heritage.

⁶³ Their young men were burned in the fire; and their virgins were not praised in the bride-song.

⁶⁴ Their priests were put to death by the sword, and their widows made no weeping for them.

⁶⁵ Then was the Lord like one awaking from sleep, and like a strong man crying out because of wine.

⁶⁶ His haters were turned back by his blows and shamed for ever.

⁶⁷ And he put the tent of Joseph on one side, and took not the tribe of Ephraim;

⁶⁸ But he took the tribe of Judah for himself, and the mountain of Zion, in which he had pleasure.

⁶⁹ And he made his holy place like the high heaven, like the earth which is fixed by him for ever.

⁷⁰ He took David to be his servant, taking him from the place of the flocks;

⁷¹ From looking after the sheep which were giving milk, he took him to give food to Jacob his people, and to Israel his heritage.

⁶⁵ Then the Lord awoke as one out of sleep, like a mighty man that shouteth aloud by reason of wine;

⁶⁶ And he smote his adversaries in the hinder part, and put them to everlasting reproach.

⁶⁷ And he rejected the tent of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim,

⁶⁸ But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved;

⁶⁹ And he built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth which he hath founded for ever.

⁷⁰ And he chose David his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:

⁷¹ From following the suckling-ewes, he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.

⁵⁷ Just like their forefathers they turned away from God and were unfaithful to him, as twisted as a defective bow.

⁵⁸ They made him angry with their pagan high places of worship; they made him jealous with their idols.

⁵⁹ When God heard their worship he became furious and he totally rejected Israel.

⁶⁰ He abandoned his place at Shiloh, the Tabernacle where he lived among the people.

⁶¹ He surrendered the Ark of his power, allowing it to be captured; handing it over into enemy hands.

⁶² He handed over his people to be slaughtered by the sword; he was furious with his chosen people.

⁶³ Their young men were destroyed by fire; their young women had no wedding songs.

⁶⁴ Their priests were killed by the sword; their widows were unable to mourn.

⁶⁵ Then the Lord woke up as if from sleep, as a warrior sobering up from drinking wine.

⁶⁶ He defeated his enemies, striking them on the back, causing them everlasting shame.

⁶⁷ He rejected the descendants of Joseph, and did not choose the tribe of Ephraim.

⁶⁸ Instead he chose the tribe of Judah, and Mount Zion which he loves.

⁶⁹ There he built his sanctuary, high like the heavens, on earth that he made to last forever.

⁷⁰ He chose his servant David, taking him from the sheep pens,

⁷¹ taking him from caring for the sheep and lambs to be a shepherd to the descendants of Jacob—God's special people, Israel.

⁵⁷ But turned backe and delt falsely like their fathers: they turned like a deceitfull bowe.

⁵⁸ And they prouoked him to anger with their high places, and mooued him to wrath with their grauen images.

⁵⁹ God heard this and was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel,

⁶⁰ So that hee forsooke the habitation of Shilo, euen the Tabernacle where hee dwelt among men,

⁶¹ And deliuered his power into captiuitie, and his beautie into the enemies hand.

⁶² And hee gaue vp his people to the sworde, and was angrie with his inheritance.

⁶³ The fire deuoured their chosen men, and their maides were not praised.

⁶⁴ Their Priestes fell by the sworde, and their widowes lamented not.

⁶⁵ But the Lord awaked as one out of sleepe, and as a strong man that after his wine crieth out,

⁶⁶ And smote his enemies in the hinder parts, and put them to a perpetuall shame.

⁶⁷ Yet he refused the tabernacle of Ioseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:

⁶⁸ But chose the tribe of Iudah, and mount Zion which he loued.

⁶⁹ And he built his Sanctuarie as an high palace, like the earth, which he stablished for euer.

⁷⁰ He chose Dauid also his seruant, and tooke him from the shepefolds.

⁷¹ Euen from behinde the ewes with yong brought he him to feede his people in Iaakob, and his inheritance in Israel.

⁶⁷ Yet was he disgusted with the tent of Joseph, and of the tribe of Ephraim he made not choice;

⁶⁸ But he chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.

⁶⁹ And he built like high mountains his sanctuary, like the earth which he hath founded for ever.

⁷⁰ And he made choice of David his servant, and took him from the sheep-folds:

⁶⁸ But chose the tribe of Judah, The Mount Zion which he loved;

⁶⁹ Where he built, like the heavens, his sanctuary; Like the earth, which he hath established for ever.

⁵⁷ They were unfaithful and acted treacherously like their fathers; they were as undependable as a faulty bow.

⁵⁸ For they made him angry with their high places and provoked him to jealous anger with their idols.

⁵⁹ When God heard this, he was angry and completely rejected Israel.

⁶⁰ He abandoned the sanctuary of Shiloh, the tent where he had lived among people.

⁶¹ He allowed his strength to be captured and gave his glory into the enemy's hand.

⁶² He handed his people over to the sword, and he was angry with his heritage.

⁶³ Fire devoured their young men, and their young women had no wedding songs.

⁶⁴ Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows could not weep.

⁶⁵ Then the Lord awakened as one from sleep, like a warrior who shouts because of wine.

⁶⁶ He drove his adversaries back; he put them to everlasting shame.

⁶⁷ He rejected the tent of Joseph, and he did not chose the tribe of Ephraim.

⁶⁸ He chose the tribe of Judah and Mount Zion that he loved.

⁶⁹ He built his sanctuary like the heavens, like the earth that he has established forever.

⁷⁰ He chose David, his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds.

⁷¹ He took him from following the ewes with their young, and he brought him to be shepherd of Jacob, his people, and of Israel, his heritage.

⁶⁰ And he putted or put away the tabernacle of Shiloh; his tabernacle in which he dwelled among men.

⁶¹ And he betook the virtue of them into captivity; and the fairness of them into the hands of the enemy.

⁶² And he enclosed altogether his people in sword; and he despised his heritage.

⁶³ Fire ate the young men of them; and the virgins of them were not bewailed or bewept.

⁶⁴ The priests of them fell down by sword; and the widows of them were not bewept.

⁶⁵ And the Lord was raised, as sleeping; as mighty greatly filled or drunk of wine.

⁶⁶ And he smote his enemies on the hinder parts; he gave to them ever-lasting shame.

⁶⁷ And he putted or put away the tabernacle of Joseph; and he chose not the lineage of Ephraim.

⁶⁸ But he chose the lineage of Judah; he chose the hill of Zion, which he loved.

⁶⁹ And he as an unicorn builded his holy place; in the land, which he founded into worlds.

⁷⁰ And he chose David his servant, and took him up from the flocks of sheep;

⁷¹ he took him from behind sheep with lambs. To feed Jacob his servant; and Israel his heritage.

⁵⁷ And they turned away themselves, and they kept not covenant; as their fathers, (they) were turned into a shrewd bow. (And they turned themselves away or And they rebelled, and they did not obey the covenant; like their forefathers, they were bent like a crooked bow.)

⁵⁸ They stirred him into ire in their little hills; and they stirred him to indignation in their graven images. (They stirred him to anger with their high places, or their hill shrines; and they stirred him to indignation with their carved images, or their idols.)

⁵⁹ God heard, and forsook; and brought to nought Israel greatly. (God saw and heard all of this; and then he abandoned them, and he brought down Israel into nothing.)

⁶⁰ And he putted away the tabernacle of Shiloh; his tabernacle in which he dwelled among men. (And he deserted his Tabernacle at Shiloh; the Tent in which he lived among his people.)

⁶¹ And he betook the virtue of them into captivity; and the fairness of them into the hands of the enemy. (And he delivered the symbol of his strength, that is, the Ark of the Covenant, into captivity; yea, the symbol of his beauty, or of his glory, into the hands of the enemy.)

⁶² And he closed together his people in sword; and he despised his heritage. (And he altogether ended his people by the sword; and he despised his inheritance.)

⁶³ Fire ate the young men of them; and the virgins of them were not bewailed/were not bewept. (The fire ate up their young men; and their virgins did not bewail them or and their virgins did not weep for them.)

⁶⁴ The priests of them fell down by sword; and the widows of them were not bewept. (Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows did not weep for them.)

⁶⁵ And the Lord was raised, as sleeping; as mighty greatly filled of wine. (Then the Lord was raised up; like one who had been sleeping, like a mighty man excited by wine.)

⁶⁶ And he smote his enemies on the hinder parts; he gave to them everlasting shame. (And he struck his enemies on their backsides; yea, he gave them up to everlasting shame.)

⁶⁷ And he putted away the tabernacle of Joseph; and he chose not the lineage of Ephraim. (And he rejected the house of Joseph; and he chose not the tribe of Ephraim.)

⁶⁸ But he chose the lineage of Judah; he chose the hill of Zion, which he loved. (But he chose the tribe of Judah; and he chose Mount Zion, which he loved.)

⁶⁹ And he as an unicorn builded his holy place; in the land, which he founded into worlds. (And he built his holy place like his home in heaven or And he built his holy place as high as the heavens; and he founded it like the earth, to last forever.)

⁷⁰ And he chose David his servant, and took him up from the flocks of sheep; (And he chose David to be his servant, and took him away from the flocks of sheep;)

⁷¹ he took him from behind sheep with lambs. To feed Jacob his servant; and Israel his heritage. (yea, he brought him out from following behind the sheep with their lambs, to feed his people Jacob; yea, his inheritance Israel.)

⁵⁷ And they turn back, And deal treacherously like their fathers, They have been turned like a deceitful bow,

⁵⁸ And make Him angry with their high places, And with their graven images make Him zealous,

⁵⁹ God hath heard, and sheweth Himself wroth. And kicketh exceedingly against Israel.

⁶⁰ And He leaveth the tabernacle of Shiloh, The tent He had placed among men,

⁶¹ And He giveth His strength to captivity, And His beauty into the hand of an adversary,

⁶² And delivereth up to the sword His people, And with His inheritance shewed Himself angry.

⁶³ His young men hath fire consumed, And His virgins have not been praised.

⁶⁴ His priests by the sword have fallen, And their widows weep not.

⁶⁵ And the Lord waketh as a sleeper, As a mighty one crying aloud from wine.

⁶⁶ And He smiteth His adversaries backward, A reproach age-during He hath put on them,

⁶⁷ And He kicketh against the tent of Joseph, And on the tribe of Ephraim hath not fixed.

⁶⁸ And He chooseth the tribe of Judah, With mount Zion that He loved,

⁶⁹ And buildeth His sanctuary as a high place, Like the earth, He founded it to the age.

⁷⁰ And He fixeth on David His servant, And taketh him from the folds of a flock,

⁷¹ From behind suckling ones He hath brought him in, To rule over Jacob His people, And over Israel His inheritance.
