¹ Maschil of Asaph. O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever? Why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture?

² Remember thy congregation, which thou hast gotten of old, Which thou hast redeemed to be the tribe of thine inheritance; And mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.

³ Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual ruins, All the evil that the enemy hath done in the sanctuary.

⁴ Thine adversaries have roared in the midst of thine assembly; They have set up their ensigns for signs.

⁵ They seemed as men that lifted up Axes upon a thicket of trees.

⁶ And now all the carved work thereof They break down with hatchet and hammers.

⁷ They have set thy sanctuary on fire; They have profaned the dwelling-place of thy name by casting it to the ground.

⁸ They said in their heart, Let us make havoc of them altogether: They have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land.

⁹ We see not our signs: There is no more any prophet; Neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.

⁹ For there is a cup in the hand of the Lord, full of unmingled wine; and he has turned it from side to side, but its dregs have not been wholly poured out; all the sinners of the earth shall drink them.

² Do not forget your people whom you chose long ago, the people whom you freed from being slaves in Egypt and caused to become your tribe. Do not forget Jerusalem, which was ◄your home/where you dwelt► on this earth.

³ Walk along and see where everything has been totally ruined; our enemies have destroyed everything in the sacred temple.

⁴ Your enemies shouted triumphantly in this sacred place; they erected their banners to show they had defeated us.

⁵ They cut down all the engraved objects in the temple like woodsmen cut down trees.

⁶ Then they smashed all the carved wood with their axes and hammers.

⁷ Then they burned your temple to the ground; they caused that place where you were worshiped to be unfit for people to worship in.

⁸ They said to themselves, “We will destroy the Israelis completely,” and they also burned down all the other places where we gathered to worship God.

⁹ All our sacred symbols (OR, miracles) are gone; there are no prophets now/anymore, and no one knows how long this situation will continue.

² Keep in mind your band of worshippers, for whom you gave payment in the days which are past, whom you took for yourself as the people of your heritage; even this mountain of Zion, which has been your resting-place.

³ Go up and see the unending destruction; all the evil which your haters have done in the holy place;

⁴ Sending out their voices like lions among your worshippers; they have put up their signs to be seen.

⁵ They are cutting down, like a man whose blade is lifted up against the thick trees.

⁶ Your doors are broken down with hammers and iron blades.

⁷ They have put on fire your holy place; they have made the place of your name unclean, pulling it down to the earth.

⁸ They have said in their hearts, Let us put an end to them all together; they have given over to the fire all God's places of worship in the land.

⁹ We do not see our signs: there is no longer any prophet, or anyone among us to say how long.

³ Lift up thy steps unto the perpetual desolations: everything in the sanctuary hath the enemy destroyed.

⁴ Thine adversaries roar in the midst of thy place of assembly; they set up their signs for signs.

⁵ A man was known as he could lift up axes in the thicket of trees;

⁶ And now they break down its carved work altogether, with hatchets and hammers.

⁷ They have set on fire thy sanctuary, they have profaned the habitation of thy name to the ground.

⁸ They said in their heart, Let us destroy them together: they have burned up all God's places of assembly in the land.

⁹ We see not our signs; there is no more any prophet, neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.

¹ Unto the end, corrupt not, a psalm of a canticle for Asaph.

² We will praise thee, O God: we will praise, and we will call upon thy name. We will relate thy wondrous works:

³ When I shall take a time, I will judge justices.

⁴ The earth is melted, and all that dwell therein: I have established the pillars thereof.

⁵ I said to the wicked: Do not act wickedly: and to the sinners: Lift not up the horn.

⁶ Lift not up your horn on high: speak not iniquity against God.

⁷ For neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the desert hills:

⁸ For God is the judge. One he putteth down, and another he lifteth up:

⁹ For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup of strong wine full of mixture. And he hath poured it out from this to that: but the dregs thereof are not emptied: all the sinners of the earth shall drink.

¹ A psalm (maskil) of Asaph. God, why have you rejected us? Is it forever? Why does your anger burn so hot against the sheep of your own field?

² Remember the people you made your own long ago, the tribe you redeemed and made your own. Remember too Mount Zion, the place where you live.

³ Come and walk through the complete devastation. The enemy has totally destroyed your Temple.

⁴ The enemy shouted in triumph right where you met with us. There they set up their war banners as signs of their victory.

⁵ They acted like men chopping down a forest with axes.

⁶ With axes and hammers they smashed in the carved wooden panels.

⁷ Then they set fire to your Temple, burning it to the ground. They defiled the place where you live, the place that bears your name.

⁸ They said to themselves, “Let's destroy it all!” So they burned down every place where God was worshiped throughout the land.

⁹ We no longer see any signs. There are no prophets left. And no one among us knows how long this will last.

¹ A Psalme to give instruction, committed to Asaph. O God, why hast thou put vs away for euer? why is thy wrath kindled against the sheepe of thy pasture?

² Thinke vpon thy Congregation, which thou hast possessed of olde, and on the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed, and on this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.

³ Lift vp thy strokes, that thou mayest for euer destroy euery enemie that doeth euill to the Sanctuarie.

⁴ Thine aduersaries roare in the middes of thy Congregation, and set vp their banners for signes.

⁵ He that lifted the axes vpon the thicke trees, was renowmed, as one, that brought a thing to perfection:

⁶ But nowe they breake downe the carued worke thereof with axes and hammers.

⁷ They haue cast thy Sanctuarie into the fire, and rased it to the grounde, and haue defiled the dwelling place of thy Name.

⁸ They saide in their hearts, Let vs destroy them altogether: they haue burnt all the Synagogues of God in the land.

⁹ We see not our signes: there is not one Prophet more, nor any with vs that knoweth howe long.

⁷ They have cast fire into thy sanctuary; They have profaned, and cast to the ground, the dwelling-place of thy name.

⁸ They said in their hearts, “Let us destroy them all together!” They have burned all God's places of assembly in the land.

⁹ We no longer see our signs; There is no prophet among us, Nor any one that knoweth how long this desolation shall endure.

⁵ hacking, like woodsmen who lift axes on thickets of trees,

⁶ smashing with hatchets and hammers all of its carved work together.

⁵ They hacked away with axes as in a thick forest.

⁶ They smashed and broke down all the engravings; they broke them with axes and hammers.

⁷ They set your sanctuary on fire; they desecrated where you live, knocking it to the ground.

⁸ They said in their hearts, “We will destroy them all.” They burned up all of your meeting places in the land.

⁹ We do not see any more signs; there is no prophet any more, and no one among us knows how long this will last.

⁷ They have burned your sanctuary to the ground. They have profaned the dwelling place of your Name.

⁸ They said in their heart, “We will crush them completely.” They have burned up all the places in the land where God was worshiped.

⁹ We see no miraculous signs. There is no longer any prophet, neither is there among us anyone who knows how long.

¹ A contemplation by Asaph. God, why have you rejected us forever? Why does your anger smoulder against the sheep of your pasture?

² Remember your congregation, which you purchased of old, which you have redeemed to be the tribe of your inheritance: Mount Zion, in which you have lived.

³ Lift up your feet to the perpetual ruins, all the evil that the enemy has done in the sanctuary.

⁴ Your adversaries have roared in the middle of your assembly. They have set up their standards as signs.

⁵ They behaved like men wielding axes, cutting through a thicket of trees.

⁶ Now they break all its carved work down with hatchet and hammers.

⁷ They have burnt your sanctuary to the ground. They have profaned the dwelling place of your Name.

² Be thou mindful of thy gathering together; which thou haddest in possession from the beginning. Thou again-boughtest the rod of thine heritage; the hill of Zion, in which thou dwelledest therein.

³ Raise thine hands into the prides of them; how great things the enemy did wickedly in the holy place.

⁴ And they that hated thee; had glory in the midst of thy solemnity. They setted their signs, either banners, to be signs on the highest place, as in the outgoing or going out; and they knew not.

⁵ As in a wood of trees, they hewed down with axes the gates thereof into itself;

⁶ they casted down it with an ax, and a broad falling ax.

⁷ They burnt with fire thy saintuary; they defouled the tabernacle of thy name in earth.

⁸ The kindred of them said together in their heart; Make we all the feast days of God to cease in the earth.

⁹ We have not seen our signs, now there is no prophet; and he shall no more know us.

¹ The learning of Asaph. God, why hast thou put (us) away into the end; thy strong vengeance is wroth on the sheep of thy pasture? (A teaching by Asaph. God, why hast thou deserted us? is it forever? and why is thy anger, yea, thy fury, so strong against the sheep of thy pasture?)

² Be thou mindful of thy gathering together; which thou haddest in possession from the beginning. Thou again-boughtest the rod of thine heritage; the hill of Zion, in which thou dwelledest therein. (Remember thy congregation; whom thou haddest in possession since the old days. Thou redeemedest this tribe for thy inheritance. And remember Mount Zion; where thou dwelledest.)

³ Raise thine hands into the prides of them; how great things the enemy did wickedly in the holy (place). (How greatly wicked were the things that the enemy did in the holy place; raise up thy hands against their pride.)

⁴ And they that hated thee; had glory in the midst of thy solemnity. They setted their signs, either banners, to be signs on the highest (place), as in the out-going; and they knew not. (For they who hated thee, had glory in the midst of thy holy place. They set up their signs, or their banners, there, as signs of victory.)

⁵ As in a wood of trees, they hewed down with axes the gates thereof into itself; (Like in a forest, they hewed down its gates with their axes, as if they were woodsmen;)

⁶ they casted down it with an ax, and a broad falling ax. (they threw them down with their axes, yea, with their broad falling axes.)

⁷ They burnt with fire thy saintuary; they defouled the tabernacle of thy name in earth. (They burned thy sanctuary with fire; they defiled the Temple of thy name, and razed it to the ground.)

⁸ The kindred of them said together in their heart; Make we all the feast days of God to cease in the earth. (They said in their hearts, Let us altogether destroy them; and they burned down all the synagogues of God in the land or and they burned down all the holy places of God in the land.)

⁹ We have not seen our signs, now there is no prophet; and he shall no more know us. (We cannot see our signs, that is, the future, for now there is no prophet here; and none of us know how long this shall last.)

¹ An Instruction of Asaph. Why, O God, hast Thou cast off for ever? Thine anger smoketh against the flock of Thy pasture.

² Remember Thy company. Thou didst purchase of old, Thou didst redeem the rod of Thy inheritance, This mount Zion — Thou didst dwell in it.

³ Lift up Thy steps to the perpetual desolations, Everything the enemy did wickedly in the sanctuary.

⁴ Roared have thine adversaries, In the midst of Thy meeting-places, They have set their ensigns as ensigns.

⁵ He is known as one bringing in on high Against a thicket of wood — axes.

⁶ And now, its carvings together With axe and hatchet they break down,

⁷ They have sent into fire Thy sanctuary, to the earth they polluted the tabernacle of Thy name,

⁸ They said in their hearts, 'Let us oppress them together,' They did burn all the meeting-places of God in the land.

⁹ Our ensigns we have not seen, There is no more a prophet, Nor with us is one knowing how long.
