Psalms 71:1-18 in English

¹ In thee, O Jehovah, do I take refuge: Let me never be put to shame.

² Deliver me in thy righteousness, and rescue me: Bow down thine ear unto me, and save me.

³ Be thou to me a rock of habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: Thou hast given commandment to save me; For thou art my rock and my fortress.

⁴ Rescue me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, Out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.

⁵ For thou art my hope, O Lord Jehovah: Thou art my trust from my youth.

⁶ By thee have I been holden up from the womb; Thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels: My praise shall be continually of thee.

⁷ I am as a wonder unto many; But thou art my strong refuge.

⁸ My mouth shall be filled with thy praise, And with thy honor all the day.

⁹ Cast me not off in the time of old age; Forsake me not when my strength faileth.

¹⁰ For mine enemies speak concerning me; And they that watch for my soul take counsel together,

¹¹ Saying, God hath forsaken him: Pursue and take him; for there is none to deliver.

¹² O God, be not far from me; O my God, make haste to help me.

¹³ Let them be put to shame and consumed that are adversaries to my soul; Let them be covered with reproach and dishonor that seek my hurt.

¹⁴ But I will hope continually, And will praise thee yet more and more.

¹⁵ My mouth shall tell of thy righteousness, And of thy salvation all the day; For I know not the numbers thereof.

¹⁶ I will come with the mighty acts of the Lord Jehovah: I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only.

¹⁷ O God, thou hast taught me from my youth; And hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works.

¹⁸ Yea, even when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not, Until I have declared thy strength unto the next generation, Thy might to every one that is to come.

¹ For Solomon. O God, give thy judgment to the king, and thy righteousness to the king's son;

² that he may judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with judgment.

³ Let the mountains and the hills raise peace to thy people:

⁴ he shall judge the poor of the people in righteousness, and save the children of the needy; and shall bring low the false accuser.

⁵ And he shall continue as long as the sun, and before the moon for ever.

⁶ He shall come down as rain upon a fleece; and as drops falling upon the earth.

⁷ In his days shall righteousness spring up; and abundance of peace till the moon be removed.

⁸ And he shall have dominion from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the earth.

⁹ The Ethiopians shall fall down before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust.

¹⁰ The kings of Tharsis, and the isles, shall bring presents: the kings of the Arabians and Saba shall offer gifts.

¹¹ And all kings shall worship him; all the Gentiles shall serve him.

¹² For he has delivered the poor from the oppressor; and the needy who had no helper.

¹³ He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall deliver the souls of the needy.

¹⁴ He shall redeem their souls from usury and injustice: and their name shall be precious before him.

¹⁵ And he shall live, and there shall be given him of the gold of Arabia: and men shall pray for him continually; and all the day shall they praise him.

¹⁶ There shall be an establishment on the earth on the tops of the mountains: the fruit thereof shall be exalted above Libanus, and they of the city shall flourish as grass of the earth.

¹⁷ Let his name be blessed for ever: his name shall endure longer than the sun: and all the tribes of the earth shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.

¹⁸ Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, who alone does wonders.

¹ Yahweh, I have come to you to ◄get refuge/be protected►; never allow me to become ashamed because of being defeated.

² Because you always do what is right, help me and rescue me; listen to me, and save me!

³ Be like an overhanging rock MET under which I can be safe/protected; be like a strong fortress in which I am safe DOU. You continually command (OR, Continually command) your angels to rescue me.

⁴ God, rescue me from wicked people, from the power of unjust and evil men.

⁵ Yahweh, my Lord, you are the one whom I confidently expect to help me; I have trusted in you since I was young.

⁶ I have depended on you all my life; you have taken care of me IDM since the day that I was born, so I will always praise you.

⁷ The manner in which I have conducted my life has been an example to many people, because they realize that you have been my strong defender.

⁸ I praise you all day long, and I proclaim that you are glorious/wonderful.

⁹ Now, when I have become an old man, do not reject/abandon me; do not abandon me now, when I am not strong anymore.

¹⁰ My enemies say that they want to kill me; they plan together how they can do that.

¹¹ They say about me, “God has abandoned him; so now we can pursue him and seize him, because there is no one who will rescue him.”

¹² God, do not stay far away from me; hurry to help me!

¹³ Cause those who ◄accuse me/say that I have done things that are wrong► to be defeated and destroyed; cause those who want to harm me to be shamed and disgraced.

¹⁴ But as for me, I will continually and confidently expect you to do great things for me, and I will praise you more and more.

¹⁵ I will tell people that you do what is right; all day long I will tell people how you have saved me, although what you have done is more than I can fully understand.

¹⁶ Yahweh, my Lord, I will praise you for your mighty deeds; I will proclaim that only you always act justly.

¹⁷ God, you have taught me many/those things ever since I was young, and I still tell people about your wonderful deeds.

¹⁸ And now, God, when I am old and my hair is gray, do not abandon me. Stay with me while I continue to proclaim to my children and grandchildren HYP that you are very powerful!

³ Be to me a rock of refuge to which I may always go. Give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress.

⁵ For you are my hope, Lord Yahweh, my confidence from my youth.

¹¹ saying, “God has forsaken him. Pursue and take him, for no one will rescue him.”

¹² God, don’t be far from me. My God, hurry to help me.

¹³ Let my accusers be disappointed and consumed. Let them be covered with disgrace and scorn who want to harm me.

¹⁴ But I will always hope, and will add to all of your praise.

¹⁵ My mouth will tell about your righteousness, and of your salvation all day, though I don’t know its full measure.

⁴ O my God, take me out of the hand of the sinner, out of the hand of the evil and cruel man.

⁵ For you are my hope, O Lord God; I have had faith in you from the time when I was young.

⁶ You have been my support from the day of my birth; you took me out of my mother's body; my praise will be ever of you.

⁷ I am a wonder to all; but you are my strong tower.

⁸ My mouth will be full of your praise and glory all the day.

⁹ Do not give me up when I am old; be my help even when my strength is gone.

¹⁰ For my haters are waiting secretly for me; and those who are watching for my soul are banded together in their evil designs,

¹¹ Saying, God has given him up; go after him and take him, for he has no helper.

¹² O God, be not far from me; O my God, come quickly to my help.

¹³ Let those who say evil against my soul be overcome and put to shame; let my haters be made low and have no honour.

¹⁴ But I will go on ever hoping, and increasing in all your praise.

¹⁵ My mouth will make clear your righteousness and your salvation all the day; for they are more than may be measured.

¹⁶ I will give news of the great acts of the Lord God; my words will be of your righteousness, and of yours only.

¹⁷ O God, you have been my teacher from the time when I was young; and I have been talking of your works of wonder even till now.

¹⁸ Now when I am old and grey-headed, O God, give me not up; till I have made clear your strength to this generation, and your power to all those to come.

¹ In thee, Jehovah, do I trust: let me never be ashamed.

² Deliver me in thy righteousness, and rescue me; incline thine ear unto me, and save me.

³ Be to me a rock of habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress.

⁴ My God, rescue me out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.

⁵ For thou art my hope, O Lord Jehovah, my confidence from my youth.

⁹ Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.

¹⁰ For mine enemies speak against me, and they that watch for my soul consult together,

¹¹ Saying, God hath forsaken him; pursue and seize him, for there is none to deliver.

¹² O God, be not far from me; my God, hasten to my help.

¹³ Let them be ashamed, let them be consumed, that are adversaries to my soul; let them be covered with reproach and dishonour that seek my hurt.

¹⁴ But as for me, I will hope continually, and will praise thee yet more and more.

¹⁵ My mouth shall declare thy righteousness, and thy salvation all the day: for I know not the numbers thereof.

¹⁶ I will go in the might of the Lord Jehovah; I will recall thy righteousness, thine alone.

¹⁷ O God, thou hast taught me from my youth, and hitherto have I proclaimed thy marvellous works:

¹⁸ Now also, when I am old and greyheaded, O God, forsake me not, until I have proclaimed thine arm unto this generation, thy might to every one that is to come.

¹ A psalm on Solomon.

² Give to the king thy judgment, O God: and to the king’s son thy justice: To judge thy people with justice, and thy poor with judgment.

³ Let the mountains receive peace for the people: and the hills justice.

⁴ He shall judge the poor of the people, and he shall save the children of the poor: and he shall humble the oppressor.

⁵ And he shall continue with the sun, and before the moon, throughout all generations.

⁶ He shall come down like rain upon the fleece; and as showers falling gently upon the earth.

⁷ In his days shall justice spring up, and abundance of peace, till the moon be taken sway.

⁸ And he shall rule from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.

⁹ Before him the Ethiopians shall fall down: and his enemies shall lick the ground.

¹⁰ The kings of Tharsis and the islands shall offer presents: the kings of the Arabians and of Saba shall bring gifts:

¹¹ And all kings of the earth shall adore him: all nations shall serve him.

¹² For he shall deliver the poor from the mighty: and the needy that had no helper.

¹⁴ He shall redeem their souls from usuries and iniquity: and their names shall be honourable in his sight.

¹⁵ And he shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Arabia, for him they shall always adore: they shall bless him all the day.

¹⁶ And there shall be a firmament on the earth on the tops of mountains, above Libanus shall the fruit thereof be exalted: and they of the city shall flourish like the grass of the earth.

¹⁷ Let his name be blessed for evermore: his name continueth before the sun. And in him shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed: all nations shall magnify him.

¹⁸ Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who alone doth wonderful things.

¹ Lord, you are the one who keeps me safe; please don't disappoint me.

² Save me, rescue me, because you always do what is right.

³ Please listen to me, and save me. Be my rock of protection where I can always go and hide. You gave the command to save me; for you are my rock and fortress.

⁴ My God, rescue me from the power of the wicked, from the clutches of those who are evil and brutal.

⁵ For you, Lord God, are my hope. You are the one I have trusted since I was young.

⁶ I have depended on you since birth; you have taken care of me from my mother's womb. That's why I'm always praising you!

⁷ My life has been like a miracle to many people, for you have been my powerful protector.

⁸ All day long I am full of praise for you, telling how wonderful you are!

⁹ Don't reject me now I'm getting old. When my strength is gone, please don't abandon me.

¹⁰ For my enemies are talking about me; those who want to kill me are plotting together.

¹¹ They say, “God has given up on him. Let's go after him because there's no one to save him.”

¹² God, please don't stay away from me. My God, hurry to help me!

¹³ Defeat my accusers, get rid of them! May those who want to cause me trouble be covered with shame and disgrace!

¹⁴ As for me, I will go on hoping in you, and I will praise you more and more.

¹⁵ I will talk about your goodness and your salvation every day, even though it's more than I can understand.

¹⁶ I will come and explain what the Lord has done. I will remind people that you alone do what is right.

¹⁷ God, you have taught me since I was young, and I still tell others about all the wonderful things you do.

¹⁸ Even though I'm old and gray, please don't abandon me, God. Let me tell the new generation about your power. Let me explain to all who are to come the great things you do.

¹ In thee, O Lord, I trust: let me neuer be ashamed.

² Rescue mee and deliuer me in thy righteousnes: incline thine eare vnto me and saue me.

³ Be thou my strong rocke, whereunto I may alway resort: thou hast giuen commandement to saue me: for thou art my rocke, and my fortresse.

⁴ Deliuer mee, O my God, out of the hande of the wicked: out of the hande of the euill and cruell man.

¹⁵ My mouth shall tell thy rightful-ness or rightwiseness; all day thine health. For I knew not by literature, that is, by man’s teaching, but by God’s revelation,

¹⁶ I shall enter into the powers of the Lord; Lord, I shall bethink on thy rightfulness or rightwiseness alone.

¹⁷ God, thou hast taught me from my youth, and till to now; I shall tell out thy marvels.

¹⁸ And till into eld age /into oldness, and the last age; God, forsake thou not me. Till I tell thine arm, or power, to each generation that shall come.

¹ Lord, I hoped in thee; be I not shamed into without end; (Lord, I put my trust in thee; never let me be put to shame;)

² in thy rightwiseness deliver thou me, and ravish me out. Bow down thine ear to me; and make me safe. (in thy righteousness save thou me, and rescue me. Bow down thy ear to me; and save me.)

³ Be thou to me into God a defender; and into a strengthened place, that thou make me safe. For thou art my steadfastness; and my refuge. (God, be thou my defender; and a place of strength, where I shall be safe. For thou art my steadfastness; and my refuge.)

⁴ My God, deliver thou me from the hand of the sinner; and from the hand of a man doing against the law, and of the wicked man. (My God, rescue thou me from the power of the sinner; and from the power of the law-breakers, and of the wicked.)

⁵ For thou, Lord, art my patience, (or For thou, Lord, art whom I put my trust in); Lord, thou art mine hope from my youth.

⁶ In thee I am confirmed, that is, defended, from the womb; thou art my defender from the womb of my mother. My singing is evermore in thee (or My praises shall be of thee forevermore);

⁷ I am made as a great wonder to many men; and thou art a strong helper. (I am made a great example to many men; but thou art my strong helper.)

⁸ My mouth be filled with praising; that I sing thy glory, all day thy greatness. (My mouth shall be filled with praise; and I shall sing of thy glory, and of thy greatness, all day long.)

⁹ Cast thou not away me in the time of eld (age)/in the time of oldness; when my strength faileth, forsake thou not me. (Cast thou me not away in the time of old age; when my strength faileth, desert thou me not.)

¹⁰ For mine enemies said of me; and they that kept my life made counsel together. (For my enemies spoke against me; those who laid ambush for me took counsel together.)

¹¹ Saying, God hath forsaken him; pursue ye, and take him; for none there is that shall deliver. (And they said, God hath deserted him; pursue ye after him, and take hold of him; for there is no one who will save him.)

¹² God, be thou not made afar from me; my God, behold thou into mine help. (God, be thou not made far away from me; my God, hasten thou to help me.)

¹³ Men that backbite my soul, be shamed, and fail they; and be they covered with reproof and shame, that seek evils to me. (Let those who backbite me be shamed, and fail they; let those who seek evil for me, be covered with reproach and shame.)

¹⁴ But I shall hope evermore; and I shall add to ever over all thy praising. (But I shall have hope in thee forevermore; and I shall praise thee more and more.)

¹⁶ I shall enter into the powers of the Lord; Lord, I shall bethink on thy rightfulness alone. (I shall walk in the Lord’s strength; I shall tell out thy righteousness, thine alone.)

¹⁷ God, thou hast taught me from my youth, and till to now; I shall tell out thy marvels. (God, thou hast taught me from my youth; and I have told out all thy marvellous deeds.)

¹⁸ And till into eld (age)/into oldness, and the last age; God, forsake thou not me. Till I tell thine arm, or power, to each generation that shall come. (And now in my old age, and in the last moments; O God, do not thou desert, or abandon, me. And I shall tell of thy power, or of thy might, to each generation yet to come.)

¹ In Thee, O Jehovah, I have trusted, Let me not be ashamed to the age.

² In Thy righteousness Thou dost deliver me, And dost cause me to escape, Incline unto me Thine ear, and save me.

³ Be to me for a rock — a habitation, To go in continually, Thou hast given command to save me, For my rock and my bulwark art Thou.

⁴ O my God, cause me to escape From the hand of the wicked, From the hand of the perverse and violent.

⁵ For Thou art my hope, O Lord Jehovah, My trust from my youth.

⁶ By Thee I have been supported from the womb, From my mother's bowels Thou dost cut me out, In Thee is my praise continually.

⁷ As a wonder I have been to many, And Thou art my strong refuge.

⁸ Filled is my mouth with Thy praise, All the day with Thy beauty.

⁹ Cast me not off at the time of old age, According to the consumption of my power forsake me not.

¹⁰ For mine enemies have spoken against me, And those watching my soul have taken counsel together,

¹¹ Saying, 'God hath forsaken him, Pursue and catch him, for there is no deliverer.'

¹² O God, be not far from me, O my God, for my help make haste.

¹³ They are ashamed, they are consumed, Who are opposing my soul, They are covered with reproach and blushing, Who are seeking my evil,

¹⁴ And I continually do wait with hope, And have added unto all Thy praise.

¹⁵ My mouth recounteth Thy righteousness, All the day Thy salvation, For I have not known the numbers.

¹⁶ I come in the might of the Lord Jehovah, I mention Thy righteousness — Thine only.

¹⁷ God, Thou hast taught me from my youth, And hitherto I declare Thy wonders.

¹⁸ And also unto old age and grey hairs, O God, forsake me not, Till I declare Thy strength to a generation, To every one that cometh Thy might.
