Psalms 55:7-22 in American Standard Version (1901)

7 Lo, then would I wander far off, I would lodge in the wilderness. Selah
8 I would haste me to a shelter From the stormy wind and tempest.
9 Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongue; For I have seen violence and strife in the city.
10 Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: Iniquity also and mischief are in the midst of it.
11 Wickedness is in the midst thereof: Oppression and guile depart not from its streets.
12 For it was not an enemy that reproached me; Then I could have borne it: Neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; Then I would have hid myself from him:
13 But it was thou, a man mine equal, My companion, and my familiar friend.
14 We took sweet counsel together; We walked in the house of God with the throng.
15 Let death come suddenly upon them, Let them go down alive into Sheol; For wickedness is in their dwelling, in the midst of them.
16 As for me, I will call upon God; And Jehovah will save me.
17 Evening, and morning, and at noonday, will I complain, and moan; And he will hear my voice.
18 He hath redeemed my soul in peace from the battle that was against me; For they were many that strove with me.
19 God will hear, and answer them, Even he that abideth of old, Selah The men who have no changes, And who fear not God.
20 He hath put forth his hands against such as were at peace with him: He hath profaned his covenant.
21 His mouth was smooth as butter, But his heart was war: His words were softer than oil, Yet were they drawn swords.
22 Cast thy burden upon Jehovah, and he will sustain thee: He will never suffer the righteous to be moved.

Psalms 55:7-22 in Brenton Septuagint Translation

7 They will dwell near and hide themselves; they will watch my steps, accordingly as I have waited patiently in my soul.
8 Thou wilt on no account save them; thou wilt bring down the people in wrath.
9 O God, I have declared my life to thee; thou hast set my tears before thee, even according to thy promise.
10 Mine enemies shall be turned back, in the day wherein I shall call upon thee; behold, I know that thou art my God.
11 In God will I praise his word; in the Lord will I praise his saying.
12 I have hoped in God; I will not be afraid of what man shall do to me.
13 The vows of thy praise, O God, which I will pay, are upon me.
14 For thou hast delivered my soul from death, and my feet from sliding, that I should be well-pleasing before God in the land of the living.

Psalms 55:7-22 in Translation for Translators

7 I would fly far away and live in the desert.
8 I would quickly find a shelter from my enemies who are like MET a strong wind and rainstorm.”
9 Lord, confuse my enemies, and cause their plans to fail, because I see them acting violently and causing strife in the city of Jerusalem.
10 During each day and night they march around on top of its walls, committing crimes and causing trouble.
11 They destroy things everywhere. They oppress and defraud people in the ◄marketplaces/public squares►.
12 If it were an enemy who was making fun of me, I could endure it. If it were someone who hates me, who despises me, I could hide from him.
13 But it is someone who is just like me, my companion, someone who was my friend who is doing this to me.
14 We previously had many good talks together; we walked around together in God's temple.
15 I desire/hope that my enemies will die suddenly; while they are still young, cause them to go down to the place where the dead people are. They they think evil things.
16 But I will ask Yahweh, my God, to help me, and he will save me.
17 Each morning and each noontime and each evening I tell him what I am concerned about, and I moan, and he hears my voice.
18 I have very many enemies, but he will rescue me and bring me back safely from the battles that I fight.
19 God is the one who has ruled everything forever, and he will listen to me. He will cause my enemies to be defeated and disgraced, because they do not change their evil behavior and they do not reevere God.
20 My companion, whom I mentioned previously, betrayed his friends and broke the agreement that he made with them.
21 What he said was easy to listen to, like butter is easy to swallow MET, but in his inner being he hated people; his words were soothing like olive oil, but they hurt people like sharp swords do MET.
22 Put your troubles in Yahweh's hands, and he will take care of you; he will never allow righteous people to experience disasters.

Psalms 55:7-22 in Bible in Basic English

7 I would go wandering far away, living in the waste land. (Selah.)
8 I would quickly take cover from the driving storm and from the violent wind.
9 Send destruction on them, O Lord, make a division of tongues among them: for I have seen fighting and violent acts in the town.
10 By day and night they go round the town, on the walls; trouble and sorrow are in the heart of it.
11 Evil is there; cruel rule and deceit are ever in the streets.
12 For it was not my hater who said evil of me; that would have been no grief to me; it was not one outside the number of my friends who made himself strong against me, or I would have kept myself from him in a secret place;
13 But it was you, my equal, my guide, my well-loved friend.
14 We had loving talk together, and went to the house of God in company.
15 Let the hand of death come on them suddenly, and let them go down living into the underworld; because evil is in their houses and in their hearts.
16 As for me, I will make my prayer to God, and he will be my saviour.
17 In the evening and in the morning and in the middle of the day I will make my prayer with sounds of grief; and my voice will come to his ears.
18 He has taken my soul away from the attack which was made against me, and given it peace; for great numbers were against me.
19 God will give thought to me; he who from early times is strong will send pain and trouble on them. (Selah.) Because they are unchanged, they have no fear of God.
20 He has put out his hand against those who were at peace with him; he has not kept his agreement.
21 The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, but they were sharp swords.
22 Put your cares on the Lord, and he will be your support; he will not let the upright man be moved.

Psalms 55:7-22 in Darby Translation

7 Behold, I would flee afar off, I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah;
8 I would hasten my escape from the stormy wind, from the tempest.
9 Swallow them up, Lord; divide their tongue: for I have seen violence and strife in the city.
10 Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof; and iniquity and mischief are in the midst of it.
11 Perversities are in the midst thereof; and oppression and deceit depart not from its streets.
12 For it is not an enemy that hath reproached me — then could I have borne it; neither is it he that hateth me that hath magnified himself against me — then would I have hidden myself from him;
13 But it was thou, a man mine equal, mine intimate, my familiar friend. ...
14 We who held sweet intercourse together. To the house of God we walked amid the throng.
15 Let death seize upon them, let them go down alive into Sheol. For wickedness is in their dwellings, in their midst.
16 As for me, unto God will I call; and Jehovah will save me.
17 Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray and moan aloud; and he will hear my voice.
18 He hath redeemed my soul in peace from the battle against me: for there were many about me.
19 God will hear, and afflict them: he that is seated of old, (Selah) ...because there is no change in them, and they fear not God.
20 He hath put forth his hands against such as are at peace with him; he hath profaned his covenant.
21 Smooth were the milky words of his mouth, but his heart was war; his words were softer than oil, yet are they drawn swords.
22 Cast thy burden upon Jehovah, and he will sustain thee: he will never suffer the righteous to be moved.

Psalms 55:7-22 in Douay-Rheims 1899

7 They will dwell and hide themselves: they will watch my heel. As they have waited for my soul,
8 For nothing shalt thou save them: in thy anger thou shalt break the people in pieces, O God,
9 I have declared to thee my life: thou hast set my tears in thy sight, As also in thy promise.
10 Then shall my enemies be turned back. In what day soever I shall call upon thee, behold I know thou art my God.
11 In God will I praise the word, in the Lord will I praise his speech. In God have I hoped, I will not fear what man can do to me.
12 In me, O God, are vows to thee, which I will pay, praises to thee:
13 Because thou hast delivered my soul from death, my feet from falling: that I may please in the sight of God, in the light of the living.

Psalms 55:7-22 in Free Bible Version

7 I would fly far away to escape, and stay in the wilderness. Selah.
8 I would hurry to a place to hide, out of the wind, safe from the raging storm.
9 Confuse them, Lord! Muddle what they're saying, for I see violence and conflict in the city.
10 They patrol the city walls day and night, and wickedness and trouble are within the city.
11 The ones causing destruction are inside the city; frauds and cheats are always on the streets.
12 The problem is that it's not an enemy who mocks me—I could stand that. It's not someone who hates me who insults me—I could avoid them.
13 No, it's you, a man just like me, my best friend who I know so well!
14 Our friendship was so close. We used to have great talks together as we walked with everyone to the house of God.
15 May death come quickly to them; may they go down into the grave alive, because evil finds its home in them.
16 As for me, I cry out to God, and the Lord will save me.
17 I weep and groan morning, noon, and night, and he listens to me.
18 He rescues me, keeping me safe and sound from my attackers, because there are so many against me.
19 God who has ruled from the beginning will hear me and answer them. Selah. For they refuse to change and don't respect God.
20 As for my best friend, he attacked his friends who had no quarrel with him; he broke the promises he had made to them.
21 What he says is as smooth as butter, but inside he plans war; his words are as soothing as oil, but they cut like sharp swords.
22 Throw your burdens onto the Lord and he will take care of you. He will never allow those who live right to fall.

17 (55:18) At evening and morning and noon will I make my complaint and moan: and he heareth my voice.—
18 (55:19) He delivereth my soul in peace from the battle against me; for in multitudes are they contending with me.
19 (55:20) God will hear, and humble them—yea, he that sitteth enthroned from the oldest time Selah—those who dread no changes, and fear not God.
20 (55:21) He stretcheth out his hands against those at peace with him: he violateth his covenant.
21 (55:22) The creamy words of his mouth are smooth, yet there is war in his heart; his words are softer than oil, yet are they drawn swords.
22 (55:23) Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he will sustain thee: he will never suffer the righteous to be moved.

Psalms 55:7-22 in Updated Brenton English Septuagint

Psalms 55:7-22 in George Noyes Bible

7 Behold, I would wander far away, And take up my abode in a wilderness. Pause.
8 I would hasten away to a shelter From the rushing wind and tempest.
9 Confound, O Lord! divide their counsels! For I behold violence and strife in the city.
10 Day and night do these go about its walls; In the midst of it are iniquity and mischief.
11 Wickedness is in the midst of it; Oppression and fraud depart not from its streets.
12 It was not an enemy that reviled me, Then I could have borne it; Nor one that hated me, who rose up against me; From him I could have hid myself.
13 But it was thou, a man my equal, My friend, and my acquaintance.
14 We held sweet converse together, And walked to the house of God in company.
15 May sudden death seize upon them! May they go down to the underworld alive! For wickedness is in their dwellings, in the midst of them.
16 As for me, I will call upon God, And Jehovah will save me.
17 At evening, at morn, and at noon I mourn and sigh, And he will hear my voice.
18 He will deliver me in peace from my conflict; For many have risen up against me.
19 God will hear me, and bring them down,—He that hath been judge of old. Pause. Because they have no changes, Therefore they fear not God.
20 They lift up their hands against their friend, And break their covenant with him.
21 Their speech was softer than butter, But war was in their heart; Their words were smoother than oil, Yet were they drawn swords.
22 “Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he will sustain thee; He will never suffer the righteous to fall!”

7 I would wander far away, find refuge in the wilderness. Selah
8 I would find myself a shelter from raging wind and tempest.
9 Confuse them, Lord, upset their plans; for I see violence and strife in the city.
10 By day and by night they make their rounds on the city walls, while within is crime and trouble,
11 within is ruin. Her market-place is never free of deceit and tyranny.
12 The taunts were not those of a foe that I could have borne; the disdain was not that of an enemy I could have shunned them:
13 but it was you, my equal, my dear and familiar friend.
14 We used to be so close, together we walked in God's house with the crowd.
15 May death suddenly take them, may they go down to Sheol alive, for evil lives in their homes and their hearts.
16 But I will call on God, the Lord will save me.
17 Evening and morning and noon I lament and moan. He will hear my voice;
18 though I am attacked by many he will rescue me, unharmed from the war.
19 God, who sits on his ancient throne will hear and will humble them, for they never change, they never fear God. Selah
20 My friend turned against me, betrayed his word.
21 His mouth was smoother than butter, but war filled his heart. His words were softer than oil, but sharper than swords.

Psalms 55:7-22 in Wycliffe's Bible with Modern Spelling

7 Lo! I went far away, and fled; and I dwelled in wilderness.
8 I abode him, that made me safe from the littleness, either dread, of spirit; and from tempest.
9 Lord, cast thou down, and part thou the tongues of them; for I saw wickedness and against-saying in the city.
10 By day and night wickedness shall encompass it on the walls thereof; and travail and unrightfulness be in the midst of them.
11 And usury and guile or treachery failed not; from the streets thereof.
12 For if mine enemy had cursed me; soothly I had suffered. And if he, that hated me, had spoken great things on me; in hap I had hid me from him.
13 But thou art a man of one will; my leader, and my known.
14 Which tookest together sweet meats and fellowship with me; we went with consent in the house of God.
15 Death come on them; and go they down quick into hell. For way-wardnesses be in the dwelling places of them; in the midst of them.
16 But I cried to thee, Lord; and the Lord saved me.
17 In the eventide, and the morrow-tide, and in midday, I shall tell, and show; and he shall hear my voice.
18 He shall again-buy my soul in peace from them, that nigh to me; for among many they were with me.
19 God shall hear; and he that is before the worlds shall make them low. For changing is not to them, and they dreaded not God;
20 he holdeth forth his hand in yielding. They defouled his testament,
21 the cheers thereof were parted from ire; and his heart nighed. The words thereof were softer than oil; and they be darts.
22 Cast thy care, or thought, or thy busyness, on the Lord, and he shall fully nourish thee; and he shall not give without end fluttering to a just or rightwise man.

Psalms 55:7-22 in Wycliffe's Bible with Modern Spelling (Enhanced)

7 Lo! I went far away, and fled; and I dwelled in wilderness. (Behold! I would flee far away; and I would live in the wilderness.)
8 I abode him, that made me safe from the littleness, either dread, of spirit; and from tempest. (I would hasten, and make myself safe from the wind, and from the tempest.)
9 Lord, cast thou down, and part thou the tongues of them; for I saw wickedness and against-saying in the city.
10 By day and night wickedness shall (en)compass it on the walls thereof; and travail and unrightfulness be in the midst of them. (Day and night they surround the city, all along its walls; and trouble and unrighteousness be in its midst.)
11 And usury and guile failed not; from the streets thereof. (And greed, and deceit, always be found in its streets.)
12 For if mine enemy had cursed me; soothly I had suffered. And if he, that hated me, had spoken great things on me; in hap I had hid me from him. (For if my enemy had cursed me; truly I would have suffered it. And if he, who hated me, had spoken great things against me; I would have hid myself from him.)
13 But thou art a man of one will (with me); my leader, and my known. (But thou art a man of one mind with me; my leader, and my dear friend.)
14 Which tookest together sweet meats with me; we went with consent in(to) the house of God. (Who shared his good counsel with me; and we went together to the House of God.)
15 Death come on them; and go they down quick into hell, (or May death come upon them; and may they go down alive into Sheol, or the land of the dead). For waywardnesses be in the dwelling places of them; (and) in the midst of them.
16 But I cried to thee, Lord; and the Lord saved me. (But I shall cry to thee, Lord; and the Lord will save me.)
17 In the eventide, and the morrowtide, and in midday (or and at midday), I shall tell, and show (him); and he shall hear my voice.
18 He shall again-buy my soul in peace from them, that nigh to me; for among many they were with me. (And he shall deliver my soul unto peace again, from those who come against me; for there were many against me.)
19 God shall hear; and he that is before the worlds shall make them low. For changing is not to them, and they dreaded not God; (God shall hear; and he who was before the worlds, shall humble them. For changing is not to them, and they do not fear God;)
20 he holdeth forth his hand in yielding. They defouled his testament, (indeed, they put forth their hands, against those who be at peace with them. They have broken their promise, or their covenant,)
21 the cheers thereof were parted from ire; and his heart nighed. The words thereof were softer than oil; and they be darts. (their words were smoother than butter; but battle was in their hearts. Their words were softer than oil; but they were as sharp as darts.)
22 Cast thy care, or thought, (or) thy busyness, on the Lord, and he shall fully nourish thee; and he shall not give into without end fluttering to a just man. (Cast thy burdens upon the Lord, and he shall nourish and protect thee; yea, he shall not allow the righteous to be moved, or shaken.)

Psalms 55:7-22 in Young's Literal Translation

7 Lo, I move far off, I lodge in a wilderness. Selah.
8 I hasten escape for myself, From a rushing wind, from a whirlwind.
9 Swallow up, O Lord, divide their tongue, For I saw violence and strife in a city.
10 By day and by night they go round it, on its walls. Both iniquity and perverseness are in its midst,
11 Mischiefs are in its midst. Fraud and deceit depart not from its street.
12 For an enemy reproacheth me not, or I bear it, He who is hating me Hath not magnified himself against me, Or I hide from him.
13 But thou, a man — as mine equal, My familiar friend, and mine acquaintance.
14 When together we sweeten counsel, Into the house of God we walk in company.
15 Desolations are upon them, They go down to Sheol — alive, For wickedness is in their dwelling, in their midst.
16 I — to God I call, and Jehovah saveth me.
17 Evening, and morning, and noon, I meditate, and make a noise, and He heareth my voice,
18 He hath ransomed in peace my soul From him who is near to me, For with the multitude they were with me.
19 God doth hear and afflict them, And He sitteth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, and fear not God,
20 He hath sent forth his hands against his well-wishers, He hath polluted his covenant.
21 Sweeter than honey hath been his mouth, And his heart is war! Softer have been his words than oil, And they are drawn swords.
22 Cast on Jehovah that which He hath given thee, And He doth sustain thee, He doth not suffer for ever the moving of the righteous.
