Psalms 55:5-9 in English

⁵ Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, And horror hath overwhelmed me.

⁶ And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! Then would I fly away, and be at rest.

⁷ Lo, then would I wander far off, I would lodge in the wilderness. Selah

⁸ I would haste me to a shelter From the stormy wind and tempest.

⁹ Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongue; For I have seen violence and strife in the city.

⁵ In God I will praise my words; all the day have I hoped in God; I will not fear what flesh shall do to me.

⁶ All the day long they have abominated my words; all their devices are against me for evil.

⁷ They will dwell near and hide themselves; they will watch my steps, accordingly as I have waited patiently in my soul.

⁸ Thou wilt on no account save them; thou wilt bring down the people in wrath.

⁹ O God, I have declared my life to thee; thou hast set my tears before thee, even according to thy promise.

⁸ I would quickly find a shelter from my enemies who are like MET a strong wind and rainstorm.”

⁹ Lord, confuse my enemies, and cause their plans to fail, because I see them acting violently and causing strife in the city of Jerusalem.

⁵ All the day long they have abominated my words; all their devices are against me for evil.

⁶ And I said, If only I had wings like a dove! for then I would go in flight from here and be at rest.

⁷ I would go wandering far away, living in the waste land. (Selah.)

⁸ I would quickly take cover from the driving storm and from the violent wind.

⁹ Send destruction on them, O Lord, make a division of tongues among them: for I have seen fighting and violent acts in the town.

⁵ In God I will praise my words, in God I have put my trust: I will not fear what flesh can do against me.

⁶ All the day long they detested my words: all their thoughts were against me unto evil.

⁷ They will dwell and hide themselves: they will watch my heel. As they have waited for my soul,

⁸ For nothing shalt thou save them: in thy anger thou shalt break the people in pieces, O God,

⁹ I have declared to thee my life: thou hast set my tears in thy sight, As also in thy promise.

⁵ I'm in a panic, trembling with fear; feelings of horror wash over me.

⁶ I tell myself, If only God would give me wings like a dove so I could fly away and be at peace!

⁷ I would fly far away to escape, and stay in the wilderness. Selah.

⁸ I would hurry to a place to hide, out of the wind, safe from the raging storm.

⁹ Confuse them, Lord! Muddle what they're saying, for I see violence and conflict in the city.

⁵ Feare and trembling are come vpon mee, and an horrible feare hath couered me.

⁶ And I said, Oh that I had wings like a doue: then would I flie away and rest.

⁷ Beholde, I woulde take my flight farre off, and lodge in the wildernes. Selah.

⁸ Hee would make haste for my deliuerance from the stormie winde and tempest.

⁹ Destroy, O Lord, and deuide their tongues: for I haue seene crueltie and strife in the citie.

⁵ (55-6) Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me.

⁶ (55-7) And I said: 'Oh that I had wings like a dove! then would I fly away, and be at rest.

⁷ (55-8) Lo, then would I wander far off, I would lodge in the wilderness. Selah

⁸ (55:9) I would prepare hastily a refuge for me from the sweeping wind and from storm.

⁹ (55:10) Destroy, O Lord, divide their tongue; for I have seen violence and strife in the city;

⁶ O for the wings of a dove: I would fly away and rest.

⁷ I would wander far away, find refuge in the wilderness. Selah

⁸ I would find myself a shelter from raging wind and tempest.

⁹ Confuse them, Lord, upset their plans; for I see violence and strife in the city.

⁵ fear and trembling attack me, and horror wraps me round.

⁶ And I said, Who shall give to me feathers, as of a culver; and I shall fly, and shall take rest?

⁷ Lo! I went far away, and fled; and I dwelled in wilderness.

⁸ I abode him, that made me safe from the littleness, either dread, of spirit; and from tempest.

⁹ Lord, cast thou down, and part thou the tongues of them; for I saw wickedness and against-saying in the city.

⁵ Dread and trembling came on me (or Fear and trembling came upon me); and darknesses covered me.

⁶ And I said, Who shall give to me feathers, as of a culver; and I shall fly, and shall take rest? (And I said, Who shall give me wings like a dove? and then I can fly away, and get some rest.)

⁷ Lo! I went far away, and fled; and I dwelled in wilderness. (Behold! I would flee far away; and I would live in the wilderness.)

⁸ I abode him, that made me safe from the littleness, either dread, of spirit; and from tempest. (I would hasten, and make myself safe from the wind, and from the tempest.)

⁹ Lord, cast thou down, and part thou the tongues of them; for I saw wickedness and against-saying in the city.

⁵ Fear and trembling come in to me, And horror doth cover me.

⁶ And I say, 'Who doth give to me a pinion as a dove? I fly away and rest,

⁷ Lo, I move far off, I lodge in a wilderness. Selah.

⁸ I hasten escape for myself, From a rushing wind, from a whirlwind.

⁹ Swallow up, O Lord, divide their tongue, For I saw violence and strife in a city.
