¹⁹ That thou hast sore broken us in the place of jackals, And covered us with the shadow of death.

²⁰ If we have forgotten the name of our God, Or spread forth our hands to a strange god;

²¹ Will not God search this out? For he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

²² Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

²³ Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? Arise, cast us not off for ever.

²⁴ Wherefore hidest thou thy face, And forgettest our affliction and our oppression?

¹⁹ But it is as though you have allowed us to be helpless among wild animals, and abandoned us in a deep dark ravine.

²⁰ If we had forgotten to worship MTY our God, or if we had spread out our hands to worship a foreign god,

²¹ you certainly would have known that, because you know even what we secretly think.

²² But it is because we belong to you, that our enemies are constantly killing us. They act toward us as though we were only sheep to be slaughtered.

²³ So, Yahweh, arise! Why are you asleep RHQ? Get up! Do not reject us forever!

²⁴ Why are you not looking at us? Why are you forgetting that we are suffering and being oppressed by our enemies?

²² Truly, because of you we are put to death every day; we are numbered like sheep for destruction.

²³ Why are you sleeping, O Lord? awake! and come to our help, do not give us up for ever.

²⁴ Why is your face covered, and why do you give no thought to our trouble and our cruel fate?

²⁴ Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?

¹⁹ Even so, you crushed us, and made us into a jackal's den. You have covered us with the darkness of death.

²⁰ If we had forgotten the name of our God, or worshiped other gods,

²¹ wouldn't God have been aware of this, because he knows everyone's thoughts?

²² But because of you we are killed all day long; we're considered just sheep to be slaughtered.

²³ Lord, wake up! Why are you sleeping? Get up! Don't turn your back on us forever!

²⁴ Why do you look away from us and take no notice of our suffering and misery?

¹⁹ Albeit thou hast smitten vs downe into the place of dragons, and couered vs with the shadow of death.

²⁰ If wee haue forgotten the Name of our God, and holden vp our hands to a strange god,

²¹ Shall not God searche this out? for hee knoweth the secrets of the heart.

²² Surely for thy sake are we slaine continually, and are counted as sheepe for the slaughter.

²³ Vp, why sleepest thou, O Lord? awake, be not farre off for euer.

²⁴ Wherefore hidest thou thy face? and forgettest our miserie and our affliction?

¹⁹ (44-20) Though Thou hast crushed us into a place of jackals, and covered us with the shadow of death.

²⁰ (44-21) If we had forgotten the name of our God, or spread forth our hands to a strange god;

²¹ (44-22) Would not God search this out? For He knoweth the secrets of the heart.

²² (44-23) Nay, but for Thy sake are we killed all the day; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

²³ (44-24) Awake, why sleepest Thou, O Lord? Arouse Thyself, cast not off for ever.

²⁴ (44-25) Wherefore hidest Thou Thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?

²² (44:23) But for thy sake are we slain all the day; we are counted as flocks destined for slaughter.

²³ (44:24) Awake, wherefore wilt thou sleep, O Lord? arise, abandon us not for ever.

²⁴ (44:25) Wherefore wilt thou hide thy face, wilt thou forget our misery, and our oppression?

¹⁹ Though thou hast crushed us in a land of jackals, And covered us with thick darkness.

²⁰ If we had forgotten the name of our God, Or stretched forth our hands to a strange God,

²¹ Surely God would search it out; For he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

²² But for thy sake we are killed all the day; We are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

²³ Awake! why sleepest thou, O Lord? Arise! cast us not off for ever!

²⁴ Wherefore dost thou hide thy face, And forget our affliction and oppression?

¹⁹ that you thus should have crushed us down, and covered us over with gloom, in the place where the jackals roam.

²⁰ Had we forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a god that was strange,

²¹ would God not have searched this out? For he knows the heart and its secrets.

²² But in your cause it is we are killed all the day, and counted as sheep for the slaughter.

²³ Rouse yourself, why do you sleep Lord? Awake, cast us not off forever.

²⁴ Why do you hide your face, forgetting our stress and our misery?

¹⁹ that you thus should have crushed us down, and covered us over with gloom, in the place where the jackals roam.

²⁰ Had we forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a god that was strange,

²¹ would God not have searched this out? For he knows the heart and its secrets.

²² Indeed, for your sake we are being killed all day long; we are considered to be sheep for the slaughter.

²³ Awake, why do you sleep, Lord? Arise, do not throw us off permanently.

²⁴ Why do you hide your face and forget our affliction and our oppression?

²¹ Whether God shall not seek these things? for he knoweth the hid things of heart.

²² For why we be slain all day for thee; we be deemed as sheep of slaying.

²³ Lord, rise up, why sleepest thou? rise up, and put not us away into the end.

²⁴ Why turnest thou away thy face? thou forgettest our poverty, and our tribulation.

¹⁹ For thou hast made us low in the place of torment; and the shadow of death covered us. (Though thou hast made us low, or hast humbled us, in the place of torment; and hast covered us with the shadow of death.)

²⁰ If we forgat the name of our God; and if we held forth our hands to an alien God. (And if we had forgotten the name of our God; or if we had held forth our hands to a foreign, or another, god;)

²¹ Whether God shall not seek these things? for he knoweth the hid things of heart. (shall not God seek out these things? for he knoweth the hidden things of the heart.)

²² For why we be slain all day for thee; we be deemed as sheep of slaying. (But we be killed all day long for thee; we be judged, or treated, like sheep for the slaughter.)

²³ Lord, rise up, why sleepest thou? rise up, and put not us away into the end, (or rise up, and do not shun us forever).

²⁴ Why turnest thou away thy face? thou forgettest our poverty, and our tribulation. (Why turnest thou away thy face? forgettest thou our poverty, and all our troubles?)

¹⁹ But Thou hast smitten us in a place of dragons, And dost cover us over with death-shade.

²⁰ If we have forgotten the name of our God, And spread our hands to a strange God,

²¹ Doth not God search out this? For He knoweth the secrets of the heart.

²² Surely, for Thy sake we have been slain all the day, Reckoned as sheep of the slaughter.

²³ Stir up — why dost Thou sleep, O Lord? Awake, cast us not off for ever.
