Psalms 44:13-16 in English

¹³ Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbors, A scoffing and a derision to them that are round about us.

¹⁴ Thou makest us a byword among the nations, A shaking of the head among the peoples.

¹⁵ All the day long is my dishonor before me, And the shame of my face hath covered me,

¹⁶ For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth, By reason of the enemy and the avenger.

¹³ And the daughter of Tyre shall adore him with gifts; the rich of the people of the land shall supplicate thy favour.

¹⁴ All her glory is that of the daughter of the king of Esebon, robed as she is in golden fringed garments,

¹⁵ in embroidered clothing: virgins shall be brought to the king after her: her fellows shall be brought to thee.

¹⁶ They shall be brought with gladness and exultation: they shall be led into the king's temple.

¹³ People who live in nations near us make fun of us; they laugh at us and deride/belittle us.

¹⁴ They make jokes using the name of our country, they shake their heads to indicate that they despise us.

¹⁵ All day I feel disgraced; from seeing my face, people know that I am ashamed.

¹⁶ I hear what those who sneer at me and revile me say; I am ashamed in front of my enemies and those who want to harm me.

¹³ You have made us to be looked down on by our neighbours, we are laughed at and shamed by those who are round about us.

¹⁴ Our name is a word of shame among the nations, a sign for the shaking of heads among the peoples.

¹⁵ My downfall is ever before me, and I am covered with the shame of my face;

¹⁶ Because of the voice of him who says sharp and bitter words; because of the hater and him who is the instrument of punishment.

¹³ Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a mockery and a derision for them that are round about us;

¹⁴ Thou makest us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.

¹⁵ All the day my confusion is before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,

¹⁶ Because of the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and the avenger.

¹³ And the daughters of Tyre with gifts, yea, all the rich among the people, shall entreat thy countenance.

¹⁴ All the glory of the king’s daughter is within in golden borders,

¹⁵ Clothed round about with varieties. After her shall virgins be brought to the king: her neighbours shall be brought to thee.

¹⁶ They shall be brought with gladness and rejoicing: they shall be brought into the temple of the king.

¹³ You have made a mockery of us before our neighbors, we are ridiculed and laughed at by those around us.

¹⁴ You have made us a joke to the other nations; they scornfully shake their heads at us.

¹⁵ We are humiliated all day long; we hold our heads in shame,

¹⁶ because of all the insults from the people mocking us, because our vengeful enemies are right in front of us.

¹³ Thou makest vs a reproche to our neighbours, a iest and a laughing stocke to them that are round about vs.

¹⁴ Thou makest vs a prouerbe among the nations, and a nodding of the head among the people.

¹⁵ My confusion is dayly before me, and the shame of my face hath couered me,

¹⁶ For the voyce of the slaunderer and rebuker, for the enemie and auenger.

¹³ (44-14) Thou makest us a taunt to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.

¹⁴ (44-15) Thou makest us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.

¹⁵ (44-16) All the day is my confusion before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,

¹⁶ (44-17) For the voice of him that taunteth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and the revengeful.

¹⁴ (44:15) Thou renderest us a by-word among the nations, a shaking of the head among the people.

¹⁵ (44:16) All the day is my disgrace before me, and the shame of my face covereth me;

¹⁶ (44:17) Because of the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and him that seeketh vengeance.

¹⁶ On account of the voice of the scoffer and the reviler, And on account of the enemy and the avenger.

¹³ You have made us the butt of our neighbours, the derision and scorn of all round us.

¹⁴ O'er the world you have made us a byword, the nations at us shake their heads.

¹⁵ My disgrace is forever before me, my face is covered with shame,

¹⁶ at the words of blasphemer and scoffer, at the sight of the foe and the vengeful.

¹³ You have made us the butt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of all round us.

¹⁴ O'er the world you have made us a byword, the nations at us shake their heads.

¹⁵ My disgrace is forever before me, my face is covered with shame,

¹⁶ at the words of blasphemer and scoffer, at the sight of the foe and the vengeful.

¹³ You make us a reproach to our neighbors, a scoffing and a derision to those who are around us.

¹⁴ You make us an insult among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.

¹⁵ All the day long my dishonor is before me, and the shame of my face has covered me

¹⁶ because of the voice of him who rebukes and insults, because of the enemy and the avenger.

¹³ You make us a reproach to our neighbors, a scoffing and a derision to those who are around us.

¹⁴ You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.

¹³ Thou hast set or put us as a shame to our neighbours; mocking and scorn to them that be in our compass.

¹⁴ Thou hast set or put us into like-ness to heathen men; and wagging of the head among peoples.

¹⁵ All day my shame is against me; and the shame of my face covered me.

¹⁶ From the voice of the despiser, and evil speaker; from the face of the enemy, and the pursuer.

¹³ Thou hast set us (as a) shame to our neighbours; mocking and scorn to them that be in our compass. (Thou hast made us a shame, or a reproach, to our neighbours; a mockery, and scorned by those who be all around us.)

¹⁴ Thou hast set us into likeness to heathen men; and stirring of the head/and wagging of (the) head among peoples. (Thou hast made us into a likeness, or a byword, to the heathen; and they shook their heads over us among the nations.)

¹⁵ All day my shame is against me; and the shame of my face covered me. (All day long my shame is before me; and the shame on my face covered me.)

¹⁶ From the voice of the despiser, and evil speaker; from the face of the enemy, and the pursuer. (From the voice of him who despiseth, and speaketh evil; from before the enemy, and the pursuer.)

¹³ Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, A scorn and a reproach to our surrounders.

¹⁴ Thou makest us a simile among nations, A shaking of the head among peoples.

¹⁵ All the day my confusion is before me, And the shame of my face hath covered me.

¹⁶ Because of the voice of a reproacher and reviler, Because of an enemy and a self-avenger.
