Psalms 40:4-12 in English

⁴ Blessed is the man that maketh Jehovah his trust, And respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

⁵ Many, O Jehovah my God, are the wonderful works which thou hast done, And thy thoughts which are to us-ward: They cannot be set in order unto thee; If I would declare and speak of them, They are more than can be numbered.

⁶ Sacrifice and offering thou hast no delight in; Mine ears hast thou opened: Burnt-offering and sin-offering hast thou not required.

⁷ Then said I, Lo, I am come; In the roll of the book it is written of me:

⁸ I delight to do thy will, O my God; Yea, thy law is within my heart.

⁹ I have proclaimed glad tidings of righteousness in the great assembly; Lo, I will not refrain my lips, O Jehovah, thou knowest.

¹⁰ I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation; I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great assembly.

¹¹ Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O Jehovah; Let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.

¹² For innumerable evils have compassed me about; Mine iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up; They are more than the hairs of my head; And my heart hath failed me.

⁴ May the Lord help him upon the bed of his pain; thou hast made all his bed in his sickness.

⁵ I said, O Lord, have mercy upon me; heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee.

⁶ Mine enemies have spoken evil against me, saying, When shall he die, and his name perish?

⁷ And if he came to see me, his heart spoke vainly; he gathered iniquity to himself; he went forth and spoke in like manner.

⁸ All my enemies whispered against me; against me they devised my hurt.

⁹ They denounced a wicked word against me, saying, Now that he lies, shall he not rise up again?

¹⁰ For even the man of my peace, in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, lifted up his heel against me.

¹¹ But thou, O Lord, have compassion upon me, and raise me up, and I shall requite them.

¹² By this I know that thou hast delighted in me, because mine enemy shall not rejoice over me.

⁴ Yahweh is pleased with those who trust him, those who do not trust in idols or join with those who worship those false gods.

⁵ O Yahweh, my God, you have done many wonderful things! No one can list all the wonderful things that you have planned for us. If I tried to tell others about all those wonderful things, I would not be able to, because there would be too many for me to mention.

⁶ Various kinds of sacrifices and other offerings are not the only things that delight you. You have enabled me to understand that very well IDM. Animals burned on the altar and other offerings are not all that you require for sins to be forgiven.

⁷ So I said to you, “Yahweh, here I am, to do the things that have been written in the scroll that contains your laws, things that you want me to do.”

⁸ O my God, I delight to do what you desire; I keep your laws within my inner being.

⁹ Whenever all your people are gathered, I have told them about how you save us. Yahweh, you know that I have not been afraid to tell that to them.

¹⁰ And I have not kept to myself the news that you always act justly/fairly; when many of your people have gathered together to worship you in the temple, I have told them that you are faithful to us and save us. I have ◄not concealed/openly told people► that you faithfully love us and act loyally toward us.

¹¹ Yahweh, do not stop being merciful to me. Because you faithfully love me PRS and are loyal to me, always protect me.

¹² I have many troubles; so many that I cannot count them. My sins are like a flood that has covered me PRS, MET; they are so many that I cannot find my way. The sins that I have committed are more than the hairs on my head. I am very discouraged.

⁵ O Lord my God, great are the wonders which you have done in your thought for us; it is not possible to put them out in order before you; when I would give an account of them, their number is greater than I may say.

⁶ You had no desire for offerings of beasts or fruits of the earth; ears you made for me: for burned offerings and sin offerings you made no request.

⁷ Then I said, See, I come; it is recorded of me in the roll of the book,

⁸ My delight is to do your pleasure, O my God; truly, your law is in my heart.

⁹ I have given news of righteousness in the great meeting; O Lord, you have knowledge that I have not kept back my words.

¹⁰ Your righteousness has not been folded away in my heart; I have made clear your true word and your salvation; I have not kept secret your mercy or your faith from the great meeting.

¹¹ Take not away your gentle mercies from me, O Lord; let your mercy and your faith keep me safe for ever.

¹² For unnumbered evils are round about me; my sins have overtaken me, so that I am bent down with their weight; they are more than the hairs of my head, my strength is gone because of them.

⁴ Blessed is the man that hath made Jehovah his confidence, and turneth not to the proud, and to such as turn aside to lies.

⁵ Thou, O Jehovah my God, hast multiplied thy marvellous works, and thy thoughts toward us: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee; would I declare and speak them, they are more than can be numbered.

⁶ Sacrifice and oblation thou didst not desire: ears hast thou prepared me. Burnt-offering and sin-offering hast thou not demanded;

⁷ Then said I, Behold, I come, in the volume of the book it is written of me —

⁸ To do thy good pleasure, my God, is my delight, and thy law is within my heart.

⁹ I have published righteousness in the great congregation: behold, I have not withheld my lips, Jehovah, thou knowest.

¹⁰ I have not hidden thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy loving-kindness and thy truth from the great congregation.

¹¹ Withhold not thou, Jehovah, thy tender mercies from me; let thy loving-kindness and thy truth continually preserve me.

¹² For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head: and my heart hath failed me.

⁴ The Lord help him on his bed of sorrow: thou hast turned all his couch in his sickness.

⁵ I said: O Lord, be thou merciful to me: heal my soul, for I have sinned against thee.

⁶ My enemies have spoken evils against me: when shall he die and his name perish?

⁷ And if he came in to see me, he spoke vain things: his heart gathered together iniquity to itself. He went out and spoke to the same purpose.

⁸ All my enemies whispered together against me: they devised evils to me.

⁹ They determined against me an unjust word: shall he that sleepeth rise again no more?

¹⁰ For even the man of peace, in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, hath greatly supplanted me.

¹¹ But thou, O Lord, have mercy on me, and raise me up again: and I will requite them.

¹² By this I know, that thou hast had a good will for me: because my enemy shall not rejoice over me.

⁴ Happy are those who trust in the Lord, who do not look for help from the arrogant or from those who worship idols.

⁵ Lord my God, you have done so many wonderful things for us, and you have so many plans for us. No one compares to you. I want to tell all that you've done—blessings too many to count.

⁶ You don't want sacrifices and offerings. Now you have helped me understand—you're not asking for burnt offerings or sin offerings.

⁷ Then I said, “Look! Here I am! I've come to do what is written about me in the scroll of the Book.

⁸ I am pleased to do your will, my God—your Law guides my mind.”

⁹ I have announced the good news of salvation to the whole congregation. I don't keep quiet, Lord, as you know.

¹⁰ I have not kept the truth of your goodness hidden inside me—I have spoken of your trustworthiness and your salvation. I have not concealed your unfailing love and your faithfulness from the whole congregation.

¹¹ Lord, please don't keep back your mercy from me. May your trustworthy love and faithfulness always be my protection.

¹² For I'm experiencing so many problems—I can't even count them! My sins have piled up so high I can't see over them. They're more than the number of hairs on my head! I feel like giving up!

⁴ Blessed is the man that maketh the Lord his trust, and regardeth not the proude, nor such as turne aside to lyes.

⁵ O Lord my God, thou hast made thy wonderfull workes so many, that none can count in order to thee thy thoughts toward vs: I would declare, and speake of them, but they are moe then I am able to expresse.

⁶ Sacrifice and offering thou didest not desire: (for mine eares hast thou prepared) burnt offring and sinne offering hast thou not required.

⁷ Then said I, Lo, I come: for in the rolle of the booke it is written of me,

⁸ I desired to doe thy good will, O my God: yea, thy Lawe is within mine heart.

⁹ I haue declared thy righteousnesse in the great Congregation: loe, I will not refraine my lippes: O Lord, thou knowest.

¹⁰ I haue not hidde thy righteousnesse within mine heart, but I haue declared thy trueth and thy saluation: I haue not conceiled thy mercy and thy trueth from the great Congregation.

¹¹ Withdrawe not thou thy tender mercie from mee, O Lord: let thy mercie and thy trueth alway preserue me.

¹² For innumerable troubles haue compassed mee: my sinnes haue taken such holde vpon me, that I am not able to looke vp: yea, they are moe in nomber then the heares of mine head: therefore mine heart hath failed me.

⁴ (40-5) Happy is the man that hath made the LORD his trust, and hath not turned unto the arrogant, nor unto such as fall away treacherously.

⁵ (40-6) Many things hast Thou done, O LORD my God, even Thy wonderful works, and Thy thoughts toward us; there is none to be compared unto Thee! If I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be told.

⁶ (40-7) Sacrifice and meal-offering Thou hast no delight in; mine ears hast Thou opened; burnt-offering and sin-offering hast Thou not required.

⁷ (40-8) Then said I: 'Lo, I am come with the roll of a book which is prescribed for me;

⁸ (40-9) I delight to do Thy will, O my God; yea, Thy law is in my inmost parts.'

⁹ (40-10) I have preached righteousness in the great congregation, lo, I did not refrain my lips; O LORD, Thou knowest.

¹⁰ (40-11) I have not hid Thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared Thy faithfulness and Thy salvation; I have not concealed Thy mercy and Thy truth from the great congregation.

¹¹ (40-12) Thou, O LORD, wilt not withhold Thy compassions from me; let Thy mercy and Thy truth continually preserve me.

¹² (40-13) For innumerable evils have compassed me about, mine iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart hath failed me.

⁵ (40:6) Many things hast thou done, O Lord my God; thy wonderful deeds and thy thoughts toward us—there is none to be compared unto thee—will I tell and speak of, though they are too numerous to be counted.

⁶ (40:7) Sacrifice and meat-offering thou desirest not—ears hast thou hollowed out unto me—burnt-offering and sin-offering thou demandest not.

⁷ (40:8) Then said I, Lo, I come: in the roll of the book it is written down for me;

⁸ (40:9) To fulfill thy will, O my God, do I desire; and thy law is within my heart.

⁹ (40:10) I announce thy righteousness in the great assembly: lo, I will not refrain my lips, O Lord, thou well knowest it.

¹⁰ (40:11) Thy righteousness have I never hidden within my heart; thy faithfulness and thy salvation have I spoken of openly: I have not concealed thy kindness and thy truth before the great assembly.

¹¹ (40:12) Do thou, O Lord, not withhold thy mercies from me: let thy kindness and thy truth continually watch over me.

¹² (40:13) For evils without number have compassed me about; my iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see: they are more numerous than the hairs of my head; and my courage hath forsaken me.

⁵ Many, O LORD, my God! are the wonderful works which thou hast done; Many have been thy gracious purposes towards us; None can be compared to thee! Would I declare and rehearse them, they are more than can be numbered.

⁶ In sacrifice and oblation thou hast no pleasure; Mine ears thou hast opened; Burnt-offering and sin-offering thou requirest not.

⁷ Therefore I said, “Lo, I come; In the scroll of the book it is prescribed to me;

⁸ O my God! to do thy will is my delight, And thy law dwelleth in my heart!”

⁹ I have proclaimed thy righteousness in the great assembly; Lo, I have not restrained my lips, O LORD! thou knowest!

¹⁰ I hide not thy justice in my heart; I declare thy faithfulness and thy salvation; I conceal not thy mercy and truth from the great assembly.

¹¹ Withdraw not from me thy tender mercies, O LORD! May thy loving-kindness and thy truth continually preserve me!

¹² For evils without number have encompassed me; My iniquities have overtaken me; I cannot see the end of them; They are more than the hairs of my head, And my heart dieth within me.

⁴ Happy the person who has put in the Lord their trust, not looking to false gods or turning to idols.

⁵ With us you have wrought in rich measure, O Lord our God, your marvels and purposes for us — none may compare with you — were I to declare or to tell them, past counting are they.

⁶ In offerings bloody or bloodless you have no delight, but with open ears you have made me. Burnt-offering and offering for sin are not what you ask.

⁷ Then said I, “Here I am, as the roll of the book has enjoined.

⁸ My delight, O God, is to do your will, and your law is within my heart.”

⁹ Well, O Lord, you know that, with lips unrestrained, your righteousness I told in the great congregation,

¹⁰ not hiding it in my heart. I have told of your steadfast help, from the great congregation I hid not your love and your faithfulness.

¹¹ So do not restrain, Lord, your pity from us. Your love and your faithfulness — ever may they be our shield.

¹² For evils that cannot be numbered have compassed me round. My transgressions have followed me up — I can bear it no more. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart has forsaken me.

¹⁰ I have not hidden your righteousness within my heart. I have declared your faithfulness and your salvation. I have not concealed your cheshed ·loving-kindness· and your truth from the great assembly.

¹¹ Don’t withhold your tender racham ·merciful love· from me, Adonai . Let your cheshed ·loving-kindness· and your truth continually preserve me.

¹² For innumerable evils have surrounded me. My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up. They are more than the hairs of my head. My heart has failed me.

⁴ Blessed is the man who makes Yahweh his trust and does not honor the proud or those who turn away from him to lies.

⁵ Many, Yahweh my God, are the wonderful deeds that you have done, and your thoughts which are about us cannot be numbered; if I declared and spoke of them, they would be more than could be counted.

⁶ You have no delight in sacrifice or offering, but you have opened my ears; you have not required burnt offerings or sin offerings.

⁷ Then said I, “See, I have come; it is written about me in the scroll of the document.

⁸ I delight to do your will, my God; your laws are in my heart.”

⁹ I have proclaimed good news of your righteousness in the great assembly; Yahweh, you know that my lips have not kept back from doing this.

⁶ Thou wouldest or desiredest not sacrifice and offering; but thou madest perfectly ears to me. Thou askedest not burnt sacrifice, and other sacrifice for sin;

⁷ then I said, Lo! I come. In the head of the book it is written of me,

⁸ that I should do thy will; my God, I would also to do it; and thy law in the midst of mine heart.

⁹ I told thy rightfulness or rightwise-ness in a great church; lo! I shall not refrain my lips, Lord, thou knewest.

¹⁰ I hid not thy rightfulness or right-wiseness in mine heart; I said thy truth and thine health. I hid not thy mercy, and thy truth, from a much council.

¹¹ But thou, Lord, make not far thy merciful doings from me; thy mercy and truth evermore take me up.

¹² For why evils, of which is no number, encompassed me; my wicked-nesses have taken me, and I might not, that I should see. Those or They be multiplied above the hairs of mine head; and mine heart forsook me.

⁴ Blessed is the man, of whom the name of the Lord is his hope; and he beheld not into vanities, and into false vengeances. (Happyis the person, for whom the Lord’s name is his hope; and he looketh not to idols, or to false gods.)

(My Lord God, thou hast done many marvellous deeds; and there is no one like thee, for all thy thoughts be for our benefit. I have told about them; yea, I have spoken about them, and they be multiplied far above number.)

⁶ Thou wouldest not sacrifice and offering; but thou madest perfectly ears to me. Thou askedest not burnt sacrifice, and other sacrifice for sin; (Thou desiredest not sacrifices and offerings; but thou hast given me ears to hear thee. Thou askedest not for burnt sacrifices, and other sacrifices for sin;)

⁷ then I said, Lo! I come. In the head of the book it is written of me, (and so I said, Behold! I am here. From the beginning, the Book (of thy Law) was written for me,)

⁸ that I should do thy will; my God, I would/I desired also to do (it); and thy law in the midst of mine heart. (so that I would do thy will; my God, I desire to do it; and thy Law is there in the midst of my heart.)

⁹ I told thy rightfulness in a great church; lo! I shall not refrain my lips, Lord, thou knewest. (I told of thy righteousness in the great congregation; behold! I shall not refrain my lips, Lord, thou knowest that.)

¹⁰ I hid not thy rightfulness in mine heart; I said thy truth and thine health. I hid not thy mercy, and thy truth, from a much council. (I kept not thy righteousness, or thy goodness, hidden in my heart; I spoke about thy faithfulness, and thy salvation, or thy deliverance. I hid not thy love, and thy faithfulness, from the great congregation.)

¹¹ But thou, Lord, make not far thy merciful doings from me; thy mercy and truth evermore take me up. (But thou, Lord, make not thy merciful doings to be far away from me; let thy love, and thy faithfulness, keep me safe forevermore.)

¹² For why evils, of which is no number, (en)compassed me; my wickednesses have taken me, and I might not, that I should (even) see. Those be multiplied above the hairs of mine head; and mine heart forsook me. (For evils, of which there is no number, surrounded me; my wickednesses have taken hold of me, and I can no longer see. Yea, they be multiplied far above the hairs of my head; and my heart hath deserted me.)

⁴ O the happiness of the man Who hath made Jehovah his trust, And hath not turned unto the proud, And those turning aside to lies.

⁵ Much hast Thou done, Jehovah my God; Thy wonders and Thy thoughts toward us, There is none to arrange unto Thee, I declare and speak: They have been more than to be numbered.

⁶ Sacrifice and present Thou hast not desired, Ears Thou hast prepared for me, Burnt and sin-offering Thou hast not asked.

⁷ Then said I, 'Lo, I have come,' In the roll of the book it is written of me,

⁸ To do Thy pleasure, my God, I have delighted, And Thy law is within my heart.

⁹ I have proclaimed tidings of righteousness In the great assembly, lo, my lips I restrain not, O Jehovah, Thou hast known.

¹⁰ Thy righteousness I have not concealed In the midst of my heart, Thy faithfulness and Thy salvation I have told, I have not hidden Thy kindness and Thy truth, To the great assembly.

¹¹ Thou, O Jehovah, restrainest not Thy mercies from me, Thy kindness and Thy truth do continually keep me.

¹² For compassed me have evils innumerable, Overtaken me have mine iniquities, And I have not been able to see; They have been more than the hairs of my head, And my heart hath forsaken me.
