Psalms 38:2-11 in English

² For thine arrows stick fast in me, And thy hand presseth me sore.

³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine indignation; Neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin.

⁴ For mine iniquities are gone over my head: As a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

⁵ My wounds are loathsome and corrupt, Because of my foolishness.

⁶ I am pained and bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.

⁷ For my loins are filled with burning; And there is no soundness in my flesh.

⁸ I am faint and sore bruised: I have groaned by reason of the disquietness of my heart.

⁹ Lord, all my desire is before thee; And my groaning is not hid from thee.

¹⁰ My heart throbbeth, my strength faileth me: As for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me.

¹¹ My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my plague; And my kinsmen stand afar off.

² I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I set a guard on my mouth, while the sinner stood in my presence.

³ I was dumb, and humbled myself, and kept silence from good words; and my grief was renewed.

⁴ My heart grew hot within me, and a fire would kindle in my meditation: I spoke with my tongue,

⁵ O Lord, make me to know mine end, and the number of my days, what it is; that I may know what I lack.

⁶ Behold, thou hast made my days old; and my existence is as nothing before thee: nay, every man living is altogether vanity. Pause.

⁷ Surely man walks in a shadow; nay, he is disquieted in vain: he lays up treasures, and knows not for whom he shall gather them.

⁸ And now what is my expectation? is it not the Lord? and my ground of hope is with thee. Pause.

⁹ Deliver me from all my transgressions: thou hast made me a reproach to the foolish.

¹⁰ I was dumb, and opened not my mouth; for thou art he that made me.

¹¹ Remove thy scourges from me: I have fainted by reason of the strength of thine hand.

³ Because you have been angry with me, I am suffering great pain. Because of my sin, my whole body is diseased.

⁴ All my sins are like a flood that covers my head; they are like a load that is very heavy, with the result that I cannot carry it.

⁵ Because I have done foolish things, I have sores that have become worse, and they stink.

⁶ Sometimes I am bent over, and sometimes I lie prostrate; I am sad/cry all day.

⁷ My body is burning with fever, and I am very ill.

⁸ I am completely exhausted, and I have no strength. I am very distressed, and I groan with pain.

⁹ Yahweh, you know that I desire to be healed; you hear me while I am groaning.

¹⁰ My heat is pounding heavily, and all my strength is gone. I am no longer able to see well.

¹¹ My friends and neighbors stay away from me because of my sores; even my own family stays away from me.

⁶ I am troubled, I am made low; I go weeping all the day.

⁷ For my body is full of burning; all my flesh is unhealthy.

⁸ I am feeble and crushed down; I gave a cry like a lion because of the grief in my heart.

⁹ Lord, all my desire is before you; my sorrow is not kept secret from you.

¹⁰ My heart goes out in pain, my strength is wasting away; as for the light of my eyes, it is gone from me.

¹¹ My lovers and my friends keep away from my disease; my relations keep far away.

² For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand cometh down upon me.

³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine indignation; no peace in my bones, because of my sin.

⁴ For mine iniquities are gone over my head: as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

⁵ My wounds stink, they are corrupt, because of my foolishness.

⁶ I am depressed; I am bowed down beyond measure; I go mourning all the day.

⁷ For my loins are full of burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh.

⁸ I am faint and broken beyond measure; I roar by reason of the agitation of my heart.

⁹ Lord, all my desire is before thee, and my sighing is not hid from thee.

¹⁰ My heart throbbeth, my strength hath left me; and the light of mine eyes, it also is no more with me.

¹¹ My lovers and mine associates stand aloof from my stroke; and my kinsmen stand afar off.

² I said: I will take heed to my ways: that I sin not with my tongue. I have set guard to my mouth, when the sinner stood against me.

³ I was dumb, and was humbled, and kept silence from good things: and my sorrow was renewed.

⁴ My heart grew hot within me: and in my meditation a fire shall flame out.

⁵ I spoke with my tongue: O Lord, make me know my end. And what is the number of my days: that I may know what is wanting to me.

⁶ Behold thou hast made my days measurable: and my substance is as nothing before thee. And indeed all things are vanity: every man living.

⁷ Surely man passeth as an image: yea, and he is disquieted in vain. He storeth up: and he knoweth not for whom he shall gather these things.

⁸ And now what is my hope? is it not the Lord? and my substance is with thee.

⁹ Deliver thou me from all my iniquities: thou hast made me a reproach to the fool.

¹⁰ I was dumb, and I opened not my mouth, because thou hast done it.

¹¹ Remove thy scourges from me. The strength of thy hand hath made me faint in rebukes:

² Your arrows have pierced me deeply, your hand has come down hard on me.

³ Because you're so upset with me, not a single part of my body is healthy; I am completely sick because of my sins.

⁴ I'm drowning in guilt—the burden is too heavy to bear.

⁵ My wounds are infected—they're smelling—all because of my stupidity.

⁶ I am bent over, doubled up in pain. The whole day I walk around crying my eyes out.

⁷ Inside I'm burning up with fever; no part of my body is healthy.

⁸ I'm worn out, totally down. I groan because of the anguish I feel in my heart.

⁹ Lord, you know what I desperately want, you hear every sigh I make.

¹⁰ My heart is racing, leaving me with no strength; my eyesight is failing.

¹¹ My loved ones and my friends don't come near me because they're afraid of what I've got. Even my family keeps me at a distance.

² For thine arrowes haue light vpon me, and thine hand lyeth vpon me.

³ There is nothing sound in my flesh, because of thine anger: neither is there rest in my bones because of my sinne.

⁴ For mine iniquities are gone ouer mine head, and as a weightie burden they are too heauie for me.

⁵ My woundes are putrified, and corrupt because of my foolishnes.

⁶ I am bowed, and crooked very sore: I goe mourning all the day.

⁷ For my reines are full of burning, and there is nothing sound in my flesh.

⁸ I am weakened and sore broken: I roare for the very griefe of mine heart.

⁹ Lord, I powre my whole desire before thee, and my sighing is not hid from thee.

¹⁰ Mine heart panteth: my strength faileth me, and the light of mine eyes, euen they are not mine owne.

¹¹ My louers and my friends stand aside from my plague, and my kinsmen stand a farre off.

² (38-3) For Thine arrows are gone deep into me, and Thy hand is come down upon me.

³ (38-4) There is no soundness in my flesh because of Thine indignation; neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin.

⁴ (38-5) For mine iniquities are gone over my head; as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

⁵ (38-6) My wounds are noisome, they fester, because of my foolishness.

⁶ (38-7) I am bent and bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day.

⁷ (38-8) For my loins are filled with burning; and there is no soundness in my flesh.

⁸ (38-9) I am benumbed and sore crushed; I groan by reason of the moaning of my heart.

⁹ (38-10) Lord, all my desire is before Thee; and my sighing is not hid from Thee.

¹⁰ (38-11) My heart fluttereth, my strength faileth me; as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me.

¹¹ (38-12) My friends and my companions stand aloof from my plague; and my kinsmen stand afar off.

⁶ (38:7) I am bent double; I am bowed down to the utmost; all the day long I go about full of grief.

⁷ (38:8) For my loins are filled with a burning disease, and there is no soundness in my flesh.

⁸ (38:9) I am made faint and crushed to the utmost; I cry aloud because of the groaning of my heart.

⁹ (38:10) Lord, before thee is all my longing; and my sighing is from thee not hidden.

¹⁰ (38:11) My heart is restless, my strength hath left me; and the light of my eyes—that also is no more with me.

¹¹ (38:12) My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my plague; and my kinsmen stand afar off.

¹¹ My friends and acquaintance keep aloof from my woe, And my kinsmen stand afar off:

² for your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand lies heavy upon me.

³ In my flesh is no soundness because of your anger, no health in my bones, because of my sin.

⁴ For that my guilt is gone over my head: it weighs like a burden too heavy for me.

⁵ My wounds stink and fester, for my foolishness I am tormented.

⁶ Bent and bowed am I utterly, all the day going in mourning.

⁷ My loins are filled with burning, and in my flesh is no soundness.

⁸ I am utterly crushed and numb; I cry louder than lion roars.

⁹ Lord, you know all that I long for, my groans are not hidden from you.

⁸ I am tormented, and made low full greatly; I roared for the wailing of mine heart.

⁹ Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my wailing is not hid from thee.

¹⁰ Mine heart is troubled in me, my virtue forsook me; and the light of mine eyes, and it is not with me.

¹¹ My friends and my neighbours nighed; and stood against me. And they that were beside me stood afar;

² For thine arrows be fixed in me; and thou hast made steadfast thine hand on me.

³ None health is in my flesh from the face of thine ire; no peace is to my bones from the face of my sins. (There is no health in my flesh, because of thy anger; there is no peace for my bones, because of my sins.)

⁶ I am made a wretch, and I am bowed down till into the end; all day I entered sorrowful. (I am made a wretch, and I am bent down to the ground; I go about in sorrow all day long.)

⁷ For my loins be filled with scornings; and health is not in my flesh. (For my loins be filled with sickness; and there is no health in my flesh.)

⁸ I am tormented, and made low full greatly, (or I am tormented, and brought down so very low); I roared for the wailing of mine heart.

⁹ Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my wailing is not hid from thee.

¹⁰ Mine heart is troubled in me, my virtue forsook me; and the light of mine eyes, and it is not with me. (My heart is troubled within me, my strength deserted me; and the light in my eyes, it hath also left me.)

¹¹ My friends and my neighbours nighed; and stood (over) against me. And they that were beside me stood afar; (My friends and my neighbours stand far away from me; because of my sickness, or my sores. And even my family members stand far away from me;)

² For Thine arrows have come down on me, And Thou lettest down upon me Thy hand.

³ Soundness is not in my flesh, Because of Thine indignation, Peace is not in my bones because of my sin.

⁴ For mine iniquities have passed over my head, As a heavy burden — too heavy for me.

⁵ Stunk — become corrupt have my wounds, Because of my folly.

⁶ I have been bent down, I have been bowed down — unto excess, All the day I have gone mourning.

⁷ For my flanks have been full of drought, And soundness is not in my flesh.

⁸ I have been feeble and smitten — unto excess, I have roared from disquietude of heart.

⁹ Lord, before Thee is all my desire, And my sighing from Thee hath not been hid.

¹⁰ My heart is panting, my power hath forsaken me, And the light of mine eyes, Even they are not with me.

¹¹ My lovers and my friends over-against my plague stand. And my neighbours afar off have stood.
