Psalms 38:13-18 in English

¹³ But I, as a deaf man, hear not; And I am as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth.

¹⁴ Yea, I am as a man that heareth not, And in whose mouth are no reproofs.

¹⁵ For in thee, O Jehovah, do I hope: Thou wilt answer, O Lord my God.

¹⁶ For I said, Lest they rejoice over me: When my foot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me.

¹⁷ For I am ready to fall, And my sorrow is continually before me.

¹⁸ For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin.

¹³ O Lord, hearken to my prayer and my supplication: attend to my tears: be not silent, for I am a sojourner in the land, and a stranger, as all my fathers were.

¹⁴ Spare me, that I may be refreshed, before I depart, and be no more.

¹³ But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth.

¹⁴ Thus I was as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs.

¹³ Now I act like I'm deaf, and do not listen to what they say. I act like I cannot talk, so I say nothing to reply to them.

¹⁴ I act like a man who does not answer when people talk to him, because he cannot hear anything.

¹⁵ But Yahweh, I trust in you. My Lord God, you will answer me.

¹⁶ I said to you, “Do not cause me to die, with the result that my enemies will rejoice! Do not cause me to stumble, with the result that they will be very happy!”

¹⁷ I say that because I am about to fall down, and I constantly have pain.

¹⁸ I confess the wrong things that I have done; I am very sorry for the sins that I have committed.

¹³ Spare me, that I may be refreshed, before I depart, and be no more.

¹³ But I, as a deaf man, don’t hear. I am as a mute man who doesn’t open his mouth.

¹⁴ So I was like a man whose ears are shut, and in whose mouth there are no sharp words.

¹⁵ In you, O Lord, is my hope: you will give me an answer, O Lord, my God.

¹⁶ I said, Let them not be glad over me; when my foot is moved, let them not be lifted up with pride against me.

¹⁷ My feet are near to falling, and my sorrow is ever before me.

¹⁸ I will make clear my wrongdoing, with sorrow in my heart for my sin.

¹³ But I, as a deaf man, hear not; and am as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth.

¹⁴ Yea, I am as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs.

¹⁵ For in thee, Jehovah, do I hope: thou wilt answer, O Lord my God.

¹⁶ For I said, Let them not rejoice over me! When my foot slipped, they magnified themselves against me.

¹⁷ For I am ready to halt, and my pain is continually before me.

¹⁸ For I will declare mine iniquity, I am grieved for my sin.

¹³ Hear my prayer, O Lord, and my supplication: give ear to my tears. Be not silent: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner as all my fathers were.

¹⁴ O forgive me, that I may be refreshed, before I go hence, and be no more.

¹³ I act as if I'm deaf to what they're saying, and pretend to be dumb so I don't have to speak.

¹⁴ Like a man who can't hear, and who doesn't reply—that's me!

¹⁵ For I'm waiting on you, Lord! You will answer for me, my Lord and my God.

¹⁶ I'm asking you, Lord, please don't let my enemies gloat over me, don't let them be glad when I trip up.

¹⁷ For I'm about ready to collapse—the pain never stops.

¹⁸ I do confess my sins; I am terribly sorry for what I've done.

¹³ But I as a deafe man heard not, and am as a dumme man, which openeth not his mouth.

¹⁴ Thus am I as a man, that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofes.

¹⁵ For on thee, O Lord, do I waite: thou wilt heare me, my Lord, my God.

¹⁶ For I said, Heare me, least they reioyce ouer me: for when my foote slippeth, they extol themselues against me.

¹⁷ Surely I am ready to halte, and my sorow is euer before me.

¹⁸ When I declare my paine, and am sory for my sinne,

¹³ (38-14) But I am as a deaf man, I hear not; and I am as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth.

¹⁴ (38-15) Yea, I am become as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no arguments.

¹⁵ (38-16) For in Thee, O LORD, do I hope; Thou wilt answer, O Lord my God.

¹⁶ (38-17) For I said: 'Lest they rejoice over me; when my foot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me.'

¹⁷ (38-18) For I am ready to halt, and my pain is continually before me.

¹⁸ (38-19) For I do declare mine iniquity; I am full of care because of my sin.

¹³ But I, as a deaf man, heard not; And I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth.

¹⁴ Thus I was as a man that heareth not, And in whose mouth are no reproofs.

¹⁵ For in thee, O Lord, do I hope: Thou wilt hear, O Lord my God.

¹⁶ For I said, Hear me, lest otherwise they should rejoice over me: When my foot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me.

¹³ (38:14) But I, as a deaf man, hear not; and I am as a dumb man that cannot open his mouth.

¹⁴ (38:15) Thus am I as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no words of defence.

¹⁵ (38:16) For in thee, O Lord, do I hope: thou wilt answer, O Lord my God.

¹⁶ (38:17) For I said, Perhaps they might rejoice over me: when my foot slippeth, they might magnify themselves over me.

¹⁷ (38:18) For I am prepared for my downfall, and my pain is continually before me.

¹⁸ (38:19) For I will tell of my iniquity; I will be grieved because of my sin.

¹³ O Lord, hearken to my prayer and my supplication: Attend to my tears: be not silent, For I am a sojourner in the land, And a stranger, as all my fathers were.

¹⁴ Spare me, that I may be refreshed, Before I depart, and be no more.

¹³ But I, like a deaf man, hear not; And, like a dumb man, open not my mouth.

¹⁴ I am like one who heareth nothing, And in whose mouth is no reply.

¹⁵ For in thee, O LORD! do I put my trust; Thou wilt hear, O Lord, my God!

¹⁶ For I have prayed, “Let them not rejoice over me; Let them not exult at the slipping of my feet!”

¹⁷ For I am ready to fall, And my pain doth never leave me;

¹⁸ For I confess my iniquity, And am troubled on account of my sin.

¹³ But I turn a deaf ear and hear not; like the dumb I open not my mouth.

¹⁴ I am like one without hearing, with no arguments in my mouth.

¹⁵ For my hope, O Lord, is in you. You will answer, O Lord my God,

¹⁶ when I utter the hope that those who made scorn of my tottering feet may not rejoice over me.

¹⁷ For I am ready to fall, my pain forsakes me never.

¹⁸ I acknowledge my guilt, I am anxious because of my sin:

¹³ But I turn a deaf ear and hear not; like the dumb I open not my mouth.

¹⁴ I am like one without hearing, with no arguments in my mouth.

¹⁵ For my hope, O Lord, is in you. You will answer, O Lord my God,

¹⁶ when I utter the hope that those who made scorn of my tottering feet may not rejoice over me.

¹⁷ For I am ready to fall, my pain forsakes me never.

¹⁸ I acknowledge my guilt, I am anxious because of my sin:

¹⁵ For in you, Adonai , do I hope. You will answer, Lord my God.

¹⁶ For I said, “Don’t let them gloat over me, or exalt themselves over me when my foot slips.”

¹⁷ For I am ready to fall. My pain is continually before me.

¹⁸ For I will declare my iniquity. I will be sorry for my sin.

¹³ But I, I am like a deaf man and hear nothing; I am like a mute man who says nothing.

¹⁴ I am like a man who does not hear and who has no reply.

¹⁵ Surely I wait for you, Yahweh; you will answer, Lord my God.

¹⁶ I say this so that my enemies will not gloat over me. If my foot slips, they will do terrible things to me.

¹⁷ For I am about to stumble, and I am in constant pain.

¹⁸ I confess my guilt; I am concerned about my sin.

¹³ But I, as a deaf man, don’t hear. I am as a mute man who doesn’t open his mouth.

¹⁴ Yes, I am as a man who doesn’t hear, in whose mouth are no reproofs.

¹⁶ For I said, Hear me, Lest any time mine enemies have joy on me; and the while my feet be moved/and while my feet were moved, they spake great things on me.

¹⁷ For I am ready to beatings; and my sorrow is evermore in my sight.

¹⁸ For I shall tell my wickedness; and I shall think for my sin.

¹³ But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and as a dumb man not opening his mouth. (But I, like a deaf man, did not listen to them; and like a dumb man, I did not open my mouth.)

¹⁴ And I am made as a man not hearing; and not having reprovings in his mouth. (And I am made like a deaf man; yea, one not speaking any rebuke, or reply.)

¹⁵ For, Lord, I hoped in thee, (or For, Lord, I trusted in thee); my Lord God, thou shalt hear me.

¹⁶ For I said, (Hear me), Lest any time mine enemies have joy on me; and the while my feet be moved/and while my feet were moved, they spake great things on me. (For I said, Hear me, lest any time my enemies have joy over me; for when my feet slipped, or stumbled, they spoke many things against me.)

¹⁷ For I am ready to beatings; and my sorrow is evermore in my sight. (For I am about to fall; and my sorrow is before me forevermore.)

¹⁸ For I shall tell my wickedness; and I shall think for my sin. (For I shall tell out my wickedness; and I am afraid, when I think of my sin.)

¹³ And I, as deaf, hear not. And as a dumb one who openeth not his mouth.

¹⁴ Yea, I am as a man who heareth not, And in his mouth are no reproofs.

¹⁵ Because for Thee, O Jehovah, I have waited, Thou dost answer, O Lord my God.

¹⁶ When I said, 'Lest they rejoice over me, In the slipping of my foot against me they magnified themselves.

¹⁷ For I am ready to halt, And my pain is before me continually.

¹⁸ For mine iniquity I declare, I am sorry for my sin.
