Psalms 35:12-15 in English

¹² They reward me evil for good, To the bereaving of my soul.

¹³ But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I afflicted my soul with fasting; And my prayer returned into mine own bosom.

¹⁴ I behaved myself as though it had been my friend or my brother: I bowed down mourning, as one that bewaileth his mother.

¹⁵ But in mine adversity they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together: The abjects gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; They did tear me, and ceased not:

¹² Let not the foot of pride come against me, and let not the hand of sinners move me.

¹³ There have all the workers of iniquity fallen: they are cast out, and shall not be able to stand.

¹² They rewarded me evil for good to the spoiling of my soul.

¹³ But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom.

¹⁴ I behaved myself as though he had been my friend or brother: I bowed down heavily, as one that mourneth for his mother.

¹³ When they were ill, I showed that I was sad. I did not eat any food, and I bowed my head as I prayed for them.

¹⁴ I mourned and bowed my head as I prayed as though it was a friend or my mother for whom I was grieving.

¹⁵ But when I had troubles, they were all happy about it. They gathered around to make fun of me. Strangers struck me, and they would not stop.

¹⁵ But they took pleasure in my trouble, and came together, yes, low persons came together against me without my knowledge; they never came to an end of wounding me.

¹² They reward me evil for good, to the bereavement of my soul.

¹³ But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth; I chastened my soul with fasting, and my prayer returned into mine own bosom:

¹⁴ I behaved myself as though he had been a friend, a brother to me; I bowed down in sadness, as one that mourneth for a mother.

¹⁵ But at my halting they rejoiced, and gathered together: the slanderers gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they did tear me, and ceased not:

¹² Let not the foot of pride come to me, and let not the hand of the sinner move me.

¹³ There the workers of iniquity are fallen, they are cast out, and could not stand.

¹² They pay me back with evil instead of good. I feel like giving up.

¹³ But when they were sick, I put on clothes of sackcloth in sympathy. I denied myself through fasting. May my prayer for them return to bless me too.

¹⁴ I was upset for them, as if they were my own friends or family; I bowed down in grief as if I was mourning my own mother.

¹⁵ But when I was in trouble, they gathered around and laughed at me. Even strangers I don't know attacked me, constantly tearing me apart.

¹² They rewarded me euill for good, to haue spoyled my soule.

¹³ Yet I, when they were sicke, I was clothed with a sacke: I humbled my soule with fasting: and my praier was turned vpon my bosome.

¹⁴ I behaued my selfe as to my friend, or as to my brother: I humbled my selfe, mourning as one that bewaileth his mother.

¹⁵ But in mine aduersitie they reioyced, and gathered them selues together: the abiects assembled themselues against me, and knewe not: they tare me and ceased not,

¹² They repay me evil for good; bereavement is come to my soul.

¹³ But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth, I afflicted my soul with fasting; and my prayer, may it return into mine own bosom.

¹⁴ I went about as though it had been my friend or my brother; I bowed down mournful, as one that mourneth for his mother.

¹⁵ But in my downfall they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together; there gathered themselves together against me abject wretches, whom I knew not; they did tear me, and ceased not:

¹⁴ as if for my friend or my brother. I went about bowed and in mourning, as one who laments his mother.

¹⁵ When I stumbled, they gleefully gathered, strangers gathered around me, and tore at me without ceasing,

¹² Evil for good they requite me, leaving me inwardly comfortless.

¹³ But when they were sick, I put on sackcloth, and chastened myself with fasting. I prayed with head bowed low,

¹⁴ as if for my friend or my brother. I went about bowed and in mourning, as one who laments his mother.

¹⁵ When I stumbled, they gleefully gathered, strangers gathered around me, and tore at me without ceasing,

¹² They reward me evil for good, to the bereaving of my soul.

¹³ But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth. I afflicted my soul with fasting. My prayer teshuvah ·completely returned· into my own bosom.

¹⁴ I behaved myself as though it had been my friend or my brother. I bowed down mourning, as one who mourns his mother.

¹⁵ But in my adversity, they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together. The attackers gathered themselves together against me, and I didn’t know it. They tore at me, and didn’t cease.

¹³ But when they were dis-easeful to me; I was clothed in an hair-shirt. I meeked my soul in fasting; and my prayer shall be turned into my bosom.

¹⁴ I pleased so as our neighbour, as our brother; I was made meek, so as mourning and sorrowful.

¹⁵ And they were glad, and came together against me; torments were gathered on me, and I knew it not. They were scattered, and not compunct;

¹² They yielded to me evils for goods; barrenness to my soul. (They gave me evil for good; making my soul barren.)

¹³ But when they were dis-easeful to me; I was clothed in an hair-shirt. I meeked my soul in fasting; and my prayer shall be turned (again) into my bosom. (But yet when they were sick; I was clothed in a hair-shirt. I humbled myself with fasting; and I prayed to the Lord for them.)

¹⁴ I pleased so as our neighbour, as our brother; I was made meek, so as mourning and sorrowful. (I went around, like he was my neighbour, or my brother; I was humbled, like one mourning and sorrowful for his own mother.)

¹⁵ And they were glad, and came together against me; torments were gathered on me, and I knew it not. They were scattered, and not compunct; (But when I was in torment, they were glad, and came together against me; yea, they were gathered together against me, and I knew not why. They tore me apart, and would not stop;)

¹² They pay me evil for good, bereaving my soul,

¹³ And I — in their sickness my clothing is sackcloth, I have humbled with fastings my soul, And my prayer unto my bosom returneth.

¹⁴ As if a friend, as if my brother, I walked habitually, As a mourner for a mother, Mourning I have bowed down.

¹⁵ And — in my halting they have rejoiced, And have been gathered together, Gathered against me were the smiters, And I have not known, They have rent, and they have not ceased;
